They have adapted the counter- service which is quite popular on Maui and when we arrived for breakfast in the line they announced that they have seats available at the bar so we took it. The bartender was friendly and accommodating. FOOD: We ordered the Light Kine and Big Kahuna Omelette for breakfast and the omelette was infused with a tasty fried rice which was very flavorful. For dinner We ordered I thought were short ribs but they were Kalbi ribs which was prepared delicious and savory We also had the crab cake and greens and poke bowl both fresh and healthy looking. I needed a "Heavy Kine" breakfast this morning before my salon appointment and I was hoping Nalu's didn't have a long line and man was I happy there was no line! I got there maybe around 9:15/20 am. I honestly haven't been in a while because they can have long lines with tourists. Nalu's is a great spot for locals and visitors alike for some ono breakfast selection and also delicious lunch and dinner. Some of my favorites have been the Loco Moco, Corn Flake Crusted French Toast, and the Cubano. Some friends have gotten lighter healthier options like the Açaí or Pitaya Bowl or any of the Fresh Salads. The open air concept with local music and slack key guitar playing in the background is inviting! They also have live performances on several evenings and a happy hour between 3-6 pm that I have yet to try. I went for the Heavy Kine Breakfast which includes two eggs, I got Over Hard, a breakfast meat (get the homemade Portuguese Sausage and pour some Hawaiian Chili Pepper Water on that!), & Sourdough or Multi Grain bread. I love Sourdough and it came with side of Jam. There was a slice of Pineapple and a sprig of Rosemary that made my plate smell so good. I love how they have a condiment station and also 2 Fruit Infused Water containers. One was filled with Oranges, Lime and Lemon and the other with Lemongrass and Pineapple. I hadn't been back to Nalu's in many years, and on our recent trip to Maui it was so good that we ended up going back twice for brunch! Located conveniently in Kihei, there is a lot of parking available. They do not take reservations. You wait in line to order your food and then find a spot to sit after you have ordered and paid. The ambiance is breezy and relaxed, with a cute family of chickens that walk around. FOOD: I was so excited that Nalu's offers a Vegetarian take on a Loco Moco. Their "Nalu's Loco Moco" is made of homemade organic tofu, spinach, turmeric-quinoa patty, over organic Jasmine brown rice, with two eggs any style, vegetable stock-country gravy. The gravy was incredible, and the patty was hearty. The moisture of the gravy and the eggs (I had them poached), made every bite creamy and packed with flavor. It had just the right amount of saltiness. The macaroni salad is my favorite that we had on our trip to Maui (and I think we tried at least 5 different places). We also ordered the Black and Blue Ahi Eggs Benedict-- which was Fresh island yellowfin tuna seared rare in Cajun spices on a toasted English muffin topped with poached eggs, mixed mushrooms, and homemade hollandaise. It came with country potatoes on the side. We both loved this dish- the ahi was fresh and the hollandaise was creamy but not too dense. The spices really brought out the flavor of the ahi, and the eggs added a nice richness. The potatoes were crispy and seasoned well. I believe the bar is walk up, but otherwise you line up and wait to order/pay before you can sit. Trust the system, it works! Great find for Hawaiian food & live music if you're staying in Kihei! The format here is a bit different from other restaurants in that you first need to line up to order and pay for your food & drinks at the host stand. You then are assigned a table and given a number to wait for your food to be brought out to you. There was a line when we arrived for dinner on a Thursday after 7pm, and we waited for about 20-30 minutes to order and get a table. Once seated at a table outside (where the music wasn't as loud), we waited for another 20-30 minutes to receive our food. It hadn't been explained to us that our drinks wouldn't be brought out to us. You have to go get them yourself at the bar. We only found this out when we asked the server who brought our food about our drinks, so our coconut mojito and Maui Brewing Pilsner had been sitting at the bar for a while. The Island Style Ribs with Respect was a great dish. The ribs had really tasty flavor, and the rice and mac salad sides hit the spot. It was enough for the 2 of us to share. We also got a side of volcano fries, which were tasty but could have been hotter. We really enjoyed the live music! The band played mostly Hawaiian music, with a few other songs mixed in. It was loud close to the speakers, and I think it'd be pretty hard to have a conversation if you were sitting there. I'd recommend bringing ear protection just in case. read more

A favorite that drew us back! We came back for happy hour for their amazing happy hour mai tai with the lilikoi foam. They were good as ever. We also decided to try the happy hour appetizers - seared ahi and crab cakes. The crab cakes were pretty good, though a bit on the dry side. The seared ahi was seared perfectly and the sauce was a great compliment. The staff was friendly as ever. We kept checking in on our drinks and the manager ended up checking for us and getting them when she noticed we were waiting. Decided to check out Nalu's after seeing some nice reviews of their Mai tais and entertainment. This place is a gem. Plenty of parking, I personally love ordering right at the beginning and getting our drinks at the bar (most negative reviews on here are about this process, have y'all been to a bar? Most places do this or have you order at the bar area) so don't be distracted by anything less than 4 stars. Our food and drinks were great. Had the volcano fries, lobster roll and burger. All delicious, I was looking forward to the lobster roll the entire trip and it did not disappoint. We came during happy hour so had a couple drinks as well, great deals for a happy hour. The ambiance is nice and relaxed. Space is open with a bar and seating while the local chickens run in and out. Lastly I'll have to mention the entertainment because he made our evening. I always send my hang gliding guests here when they're looking for live music and the best food on maui. I love the poke bowl- it's great that they use brown rice, just a little more healthy than the most restaurants - and I think the fish is fresh caught daily. I've seen local fishermen delivering fish here on a regular basis. Love the live music by local talent too, really sets the Hawaiian tone. We waited for probably 20 minutes before getting to the front of the line and getting a table. Music had taken a break by then and we were hungry!! The service here is great, they are quick and efficient and helpful. We noticed a spot on our table was sticky and they apologized and quickly came to wipe down the whole table. The food came quickly. I ordered the root vegetable quinoa bowl an added chicken and it was very filling! Slightly spicy but satisfying. My husband and I stopped in a few weeks ago for a quick breakfast, and even though I'm late posting this, it was too good not to share. Nalu's is a must-try breakfast/brunch spot on your Maui itinerary. It's also loved by Maui locals!! The line looked intimidating when we got there but to our surprise, it moved fairly quickly and we were seated within 15 minutes--super worth it for the delicious food!! String bean fries 10/10: SO GOOD!! The batter has a bit of furikake on it and they were soo crispy and flakey without being too oily. The sriracha mayo was also addictive and we even took some to-go. Ahi tuna eggs benedict 10/10: Also a hit. The english muffin was deliciously buttery and almost crispy on the top. The ahi was fresh and so soft. Even the potatoes were really well seasoned. We cleaned our plates!! We split these two dishes between two people and it was the perfect portion for us to leave with full happy bellies and head to the beach. All were freshly prepared, the portions were generous and the service excellent. Especially Hunter who was friendly, knowledgeable, cheerful and very helpful. We had a disabled person in our party and Hunter helped her to her feet and held her waker steady for her. He is a true gentleman and if all the staff at Nalu are as kind as Hunter, then this restaurant is well worth visiting. I like the breezy open air layout. I came here five years ago and since it was raining hard at this time around, I opted to come (whale watching cancelled) and even before it opened at 8 AM there was quite a bit of a line already forming and definitely by 8 AM, that line was around the corner. You do order at the counter before getting a number and a trade to sit down at a table of your choice. There is plenty of parking in the parking lot and the restrooms are clean. And it's a lively atmosphere. Five years ago it was bright and sunny and today it's a bit overcast and rainy, but it's still a lively atmosphere. Expect little chickens and roosters to be roaming around the very open café. I was looking for something refreshing like a fruit bowl, which is what I ordered. The folks in front of me recommended the cornflake crested French toast and they ordered two for their party of seven. The salad was also fantastic. As was the lite breakfast- those roasted potatoes were slightly crispy on the outside and well seasoned. Scrambled eggs were generous in portion. We had some for leftovers the next morning and it was still quite wonderful. Self serve infused water was great too. I also checked out Kīhei caffe down the street but I think Nalu's is my favorite breakfast spot. The flavors and freshness is a winning combo. Come before it opens to avoid long line!
