This might be the best restaurant in the entire city for that matter the island. Our server was Dave, who we later found out in the evening was the owner of the restaurant. All of his recommendations were spot on. He took great pride in every dish we started with a tuna tartar appetizer and calamari, cocktails were on point as well as the wines selections. For dinner, we ordered three different entrées, the New York steak, which was five out of five, the hanger steak, which I would say is 3.5 out of five and the mahi-mahi fish of the day which was a 10 out of five ! The star of the show was truly the dessert. Which was a caramelized Maui gold pineapple served with a frozen pineapple shell filled with coconut ice cream and meringue. All I can say is wow I'm giving a five star review. Cannot wait to go back. With just one dinner left to book, I turned to Yelp and you all delivered with a recommendation for Koast, which I had never heard of - I think they are new since our last visit to the island a couple years ago. Located across the street from the Shops at Wailea, they are situated on the second floor of a smaller shopping complex and have a lot of open air seating. With all the doors open, even the indoor seating has good ventilation. The food was outstanding - every dish was bursting with flavor and contrasting textures. Make sure to listen for the numerous daily specials. My favorite dishes of the night were probably the starters and the desserts. One of the starters was a special - ahi sashimi with shaved hearts of palm, citrus, micro greens, and some sort of spicy oil - so it had elements of salt, sweet, tart, and spicy with softness, crunch, and chew. Even my vegetable, sauce, and garnish hating daughter absolutely loved this dish. The calamari was also a standout - the breading was crispy and had a nice kick to it. We ordered the ahi entree as well, and it was also delicious, as was the cauliflower, which visually wasn't that appealing since it wasn't roasted, but it was absolutely delicious. Dessert options were communicated verbally by our server (they must change frequently). We opted for the ginger molasses cake, which was suffused with ginger flavor and doused in a ginger-infused syrup - like a sticky toffee cake but better. The vanilla bean panna cotta was also delicious - a more delicate dessert - though the strawberries were not the sweetest. Service was great and attentive when we first arrived at 5:30. As the restaurant got busier, it became harder to find our server. We waited for quite a while after we finished our dinner. After two birthday dinners the previous two years at Mama's Fish House, I decided to try somewhere new. When I heard that Chef Chris Cosentino was behind Koast in South Maui, I knew that was where I wanted to spend my last birthday. I did unintentionally get a whole roasted Kona Kampachi for the second year in a row, but his version with green papaya slaw did not disappoint. Although it is pricy, it is enough for 2-3 with no additional food required to leave satisfied. With their own meat and fish locker on display, can't get fresher than this and they are more than happy to explain what's in there for the next day's preparation. If we weren't staying in W Maui, I would be tempted to return to be that one lucky person the next day to have one of the rarer fishes that he claims taste like lobster. I went to Koast for dinner with my wife to celebrate my birthday this month. I heard about it through reddit and people online who liked Lineage recommended it (I too really like Lineage). Koast is definitely more upscale than Lineage and the vibes are really nice, with a beautiful view of the sunset. We got seated outside with a nice view since we had a reservation for 5pm. Our server recommended a lot of different dishes, so we ended up ordering the whole roasted kona kanpachi, ember roasted cabbage, and milk bread. The whole roasted kona kanpachi was the best roasted fish we have ever eaten. It was also a huge portion because it is supposed to serve 2-3 people. We definitely could've fed 3 or even 4 with a couple sides to share, but we did our best to eat this perfectly cooked fish with the side papaya salad and fish sauce (nuoc cham) dressing. The miso roasted cabbage was also a hit, but I think we could've done without the milk bread. After devouring most of our giant entree, we then were convinced by our server again to order the pineapple dessert - the pineapple shell is frozen and filled with Italian meringue, pineapple semifreddo, and passionfruit sauce while the inside fruit is sous-vided, roasted, and carmelized on the side. It was a little bit sweet for me, but my wife really enjoyed it. I think that it could've had more semifreddo because the passionfruit was a bit overpowering, but overall it was a very creative and well-presented dessert. My fiancé and I shared the collard green salad with the pork viniagrette on the side ($18). The salad was just ok in my opinion. Think blackening seasoning with a cast iron sear and finished in the oven to get a good mallard reaction. Well, this place delivers on THAT execution via their special grill. On to the food. At first, I really enjoyed their hanger or dry aged ny steaks. However, on my daily journey to eat well but stay fit, I pivoted to their Chicken fra Diavolo on this trip. Let's just say, it's made my trip (I base travel on food foremost). It is charred to utter perfection, spicy (even for me which says ALOT), and you can request a side of their green chili sauce for an additional burst of Thai flavor. Chris Cosentino of San Francisco is the chef. Bartenders are friendly and Maui has really embraced mezcal in recent years. A few months ago, I made a reservation at Koast, Chef Chris Cosentino's new spot in Wailea, to celebrate my other half's birthday. Having tried most of the restaurants in the area, we were excited to experience something new, and Koast (which just opened late last year) was my top choice. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly and seated in a cozy waiting area. The first thing I noticed were the dry agers along the wall -- a small detail that instantly made me think, "Okay, this place is serious about their craft." The décor was beautiful too; modern yet inviting, with ocean-inspired touches that gave it that perfect "koastal" feel. It almost felt like we were transported somewhere along the Mediterranean. The menu was on the smaller side, but in a good way -- thoughtfully curated and refreshingly different from the usual offerings on Maui. There's an emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients and creative flavor combinations. Seafood lovers will be happy here (fish, octopus, and more), but there are a handful of other proteins too. I went for the Koast Surf & Turf, which changes daily and gives you the best of both worlds (just a heads up -- it's market price). We started with the charred octopus toast, milk bread, and watermelon tomato salad, then shared the Westholme Wagyu NY strip and Koast Surf & Turf (shrimp, scallops, a lobster tail, and steak). My husband had an old fashioned, and I went for the zero-proof tropical mule. The lychee donuts were another favorite; not everyone may love the flavor combo, but we absolutely did. My husband said they reminded him of gulab jamun, which I could see. The service was really great our server and hostess were really nice and treated my party well. Downside was that the food was not up to par. We started off with the milk bread which was nice and soft and the custard and butter than came with it was good. Calamari was good too. The clam fritters barely had any clam and was mostly bread. The pasta for me seemed undercooked. The fried chicken had a unique seasoning that wasn't for me and the crust wasn't that great either. It was paired with a good sweet sauce but together with the chicken and its seasoning was not a good pair in my opinion. I just voted for Koast as Maui's best new restaurant. Here's why... Located in Wailea, the restaurant appears to be upscale yet has a comfortable vibe. The restaurant sits on the 2nd floor and has outdoor seating so that you can dine and watch the sunset. It is beautifully designed. The menu is great. It is seafood forward, offering the freshest of what is available on the island. There are meat and vegetarian options as well. Hubby and I opted for the whole roasted opakapaka, served with a papaya salad and green chile sauce. Presented on a wooden board, the fish was the perfect size for the 2 of us. It was cooked to perfection, with lemongrass and basil perfuming the fish. The green chile sauce added an herbaceous background, and the papaya salad provided a nice crunch and acid to balance the richness of the fish. We ended our meal with the restaurant's signature pineapple dessert. The fruit is removed and the pineapple shell is frozen. It is then filled with coconut sorbet, passion fruit ice cream, and Italian merengue. The pineapple fruit sits atop a caramel sauce and plated alongside its shell. What a delight! The frozen goodies inside the shell were so tasty, and when eaten with a slice of pineapple, it became the perfect bite. It was a great way to end our meal. The best part came afterwards. We were fortunate to be able to meet Chef Chris Consentino, who collaborated with Alicia & David Soboda in opening Koast. Chef Constantino took the time to come by and greet us, and we ended up having a wonderful conversation. He's so personable and genuine, and that truly took our Koast experience over the top. Koast is my favorite restaurant in Maui and was definitely a highlight of my Hawaii trip! They have a very affordable happy hour and the prices are great for the Wailea area. We got the raw of the day and tuna tripe appetizers and the standout dish for me as the grilled whole fish with a Thai style papaya salad! The food was very flavorful and not overly salty, and the ambience was incredible at sunset! There is a lovely view of the golf course and on a clear day you can see the ocean at the bottom of the hill. So apparently they have been open for just over one month. I went with clients three of us had the squid ink pasta, which was a little salty. I ate just over half of mine and the server offered to pack it and then completely forgot to give it to me. I called in to speak to the owner about it, was told she would call me back and she never did. The ambience of the place is very nice and posh. He described each entree followed with their price tag, as if I could not afford to eat here. I made sure to pay attention to see if this was a common practice, and unfortunately it was not. The establishment needs to redirect their focus on training their staff members and emphasis equal treatment of all racial backgrounds. Besides this the food was probably 3 out of 5 in my experience. The strawberry and edamame salad was very light and refreshing. I would definitely recommend it. The steak that I ordered was well seasoned. I ordered my meat medium, but it was a little too cooked in my opinion. I should have asked medium rare, just a suggested for the next guy.
