I so miss Da Kitchen being on Oahu so when we arrived in Kahului and were looking for a spot to have lunch, it was a no-brainer to hit Da Kitchen up! It was also a no-brainer to get one of their heart bombs...the deep fried Spam musubi. :) It was Mark H's first time having one of these and it didn't disappoint. I just can't get over how tasty breaded and deep-fried nitrates and starch can be! I got what used to be go-to meal at the Honolulu locale, the Tempura Mahi. It's pricey at $21 but it comes with 3 good-sized pieces of mahi coated in light and crispy tempura batter. This thing easily makes 3 meals for me and I have quite an appetite so that's saying a lot. Mark H got the Garlic shrimp/fried rice special. He said the shrimp was tasty but unfortunately, was disappointed with the dish overall. The proportions are HUGE! Biggest plates I've ever seen. And the food was top notch. 15-20 min wait, and our food came super fast. I got the Polynesian Paralysis Loco Moco. I ate half. The fried mahi mahi was amazing. The Kailua pork was tender and juicy. The friend rice was salty and crispy. I loved it. Best Plate Lunch and Hawaiian food on the island! I was sad to hear that the Kahului location closed, but was very excited to find out they opened at a new location in Kihei. The restaurant has a small dine-in area (~6 tables), and you can also place orders for take out. We had the Mixed Plate and a "Special" Combo of Kalua Pork and Teriyaki Beef. Their Kalua pork is the best I've ever had, hands down, and their Teriyaki Beef is extremely tender and flavorful. Their katsu dishes (chicken and fish) are also excellent. The only disappointing thing was that they no longer have an poke bowl. Their poke was the best on the island and maybe they'll bring it back again someday. The last two times being here, unfortunately I wasn't able to eat here. Now that I am able to, I'm gonna make sure it's worth my while. When you get here, as expected, there's a line. All you need to do is sign in on their tablet and you'll get a text message of your seating status. On this particular day, they were filming for the show Man vs Food, which was pretty dope. HUGE portions!!! Seriously my dish alone could have fed a family of four. My friend and I came around four in the afternoon and there was no wait. Staff was very friendly. To start we had their fried spam Musubi, nothing really to report, was just ok. We were not warned about the size of their portions so we each ordered our own moco. I had the Polynesian loco Moco which came with fish tempura and kalua pork and my friend had the chicken katsu loco Moco that also came with a hamburger patty. There was a ton of hype online about this place, so it was a definite "must try" during a visit to Maui. It's very close to the airport in a shopping plaza with a decent-sized parking lot out front. During our visit both of the bathrooms in the plaza were under construction, and there were "porta potties" with a portable hand washing station out front. When we arrived it was not too busy (around 4pm), but it definitely started filling up when we left. The interior is cool with tons of Hawaiian/surfer decorations with unique flair. The server was good; she was friendly and attentive with good menu recommendations. We tried the deep fried spam musubi. It has a crispy breading on the outside but didn't feel overly fried or greasy. A bit on the bland side, but the accompanying sauce helped a bit. It's quite a bit more expensive (I think double the price) than the regular spam musubi. Then we tried the saimin and beef teriyaki platter. The samin was OK... it had very thick ramen-style noodles instead of the expected thin noodles. The menu said the noodles are handmade in Pa'ia town, though, which is cool. The beef teriyaki was quite good. A huge portion of tender and flavorful meat with plenty of rice and macaroni/potato salad to go with it. For dessert we tried the salted caramel cookie sundae and the blueberry cream pie. The sundae was disappointing. Basically a cookie on top of/mixed into soft-serve ice cream. The pie was quite good. A thin layer of blueberries on top of a creamy, custard-like filling. The crust was unique. It was more like a filo dough rather than a traditional pie crust. This was our first place to eat on our trip out to Maui. We arrived right on time at opening and we were surprised that there were people already waiting outside to get in. The atmosphere of the place is pretty casual with tables, booths, and a big blackboard that listed many of their specials for the day, including their dessert menu. It came with a generous portion of Kalua Pork, rice, and salad (you get a choice of either greens or macaroni salad). The pork itself was tender, not too salty, and had a nice smokey flavor throughout. We noticed that 30 minutes after opening the place was packed with people. Customer Service was alright. They are young, and working there - that was that. C. Food Flavor - as mentioned, the flavor for me, was too salty. I am sad to say we were very disappointed in our food. Wife ordered beef Teri plate and I had the Kalbi noodles. Even tho the Teri beef was sliced very thin it was really chewy. Wife ate about a quarter of it before her jaws got tired, so she gave on the beef and ate the rice and Mac salad. My Kalbi was ok and fortunately not as tough. The Teri sauce for both was overly salty and sweet. Not sure how they did that but disappointing. The first restaurant I visited in Maui turned out to be pretty disappointing overall, with inattentive, disorganized service and less than satisfying food and drinks. A big pet peeve of mine is when someone introduces themselves as your server and then you never see them again. Why bother? That happened at Da Kitchen, we met our server, and then the rest of our meal consisted of hastily (and incorrectly) delivered food from bussers. I say incorrectly because we were served the wrong dish, which might have been caught if our initial server had been attending us. As far as food was concerned, I started off with a "fresh" lemonade, which tasted suspiciously like lemonade from concentrate (I'm looking at you, Minute Maid) with a $5 price tag. Next, we went for the fried spam musubi - a big leap for somebody who has a spam aversion. It turned out to be delicious! I wish I had ordered a banquet of these. The fried crust played nicely against the soft and chewy rice/spam interior, while the sweet/savory teriyaki glaze livened everything quite nicely. This was a complete win and should be the highlight of their menu. Finally, my friend and I both ended up trying the Kalbi beef short ribs. What a mistake. These were something like $22 and were pretty much inedible between how tough the (almost nonexistent) meat was and how bony and fatty the cuts were on the whole. A ridiculous price for a poorly prepared and selected piece of meat. At one point my friend was trying to cut hers and ended up flinging a chunk across the table due to the amount of force she had to exert. At least our meal was exciting! We had a hard time finding Da Kitchen (it's tucked in a corner of a little shopping center) but I'm so glad we did! We had the Fish Sando and the Ahi Poke Bowl, and both were excellent. The Sando had a perfectly light and flaky piece of Mahi covered in cheese and between two airy pieces of bread. The Ahi Poke Bowl was tasty, coming with a number of sauces and a side salad. We finished off the meal with an insanely good piece of Guava cheesecake. And all for under $40. It's hard to find such good food at an affordable price, and Da Kitchen Maui delivers on both counts.
