Finally got a moment to go on a date and visited Da Marco for the second time. Vibe is very old school fancy. Black and white uniforms, dim lighting, attentive staff that check on you and lots of fluffy bread. I remember the food being better the first time around. The burrata salad was an 8/10. The burrata itself was a bit bland but the dressing, arugula, and tomatoes carried this dish hard. The dressing seemed olive oil based - wasn't the lightest but also not too heavy. I throughly enjoyed the roasted tomatoes. It really made the salad well rounded with sweet but acidic notes that complimented the arugula. The cacio e Pepe ravioli was great. Quite creamy and buttery maybe slightly over salted . 8.5/10 wish it was bigger The pappardelle was addicting. The wide noodles held the meat and sauce together well. It was hearty but not overwhelming. 9/10 The short rib was my favorite meat dish. I loved the sauce but the meat was not very tender. The risotto was cheesy and paired well with the sauce on the short rib but was a little under cooked. The components all together made for a nice dish. 7/10 Did not love the quail but my husband did. I gave my piece to him. I personally found it tough and dry (was well seasoned) but the broccoli rabe it came with was delicious. 5/10 The chocolate cake is a must. The banana ice cream was not as banana or as creamy as I would have liked but the cake was heavenly. Smooth, rich, but light. 10/10 would order again. I did not share the Caramelized banana because it was too good. I honestly didn't notice I ate it all. My bad. Da Marco is one of the very few restaurants left that have that old timey refinement. Men and women actually get dressed up to come here and, as stated before, they do try to provide great service. A bit pricy for what you get but I still had a good time. read more

My foodie friend and I returned for our annual birthday fill of White Truffle Tagliolini, and this time, we brought family! As usual, the staff was so warm and welcoming. Seriously, entering Da Marco always feels like returning to the home of an old friend, which never gets old. On the topic of service, our server was spot-on, expertly attentive without being intrusive, and he paced or courses perfectly. We started with the burrata salad and the always surprising shaved celery salad, which sings with freshness and vibrant flavors. The second course included our pastas: lobster ravioli, pappardelle, and the coveted white truffle Tagliolini which never disappoints. Our third course was the impressive off-menu porterhouse, and it was perfectly seasoned, served with beautifully delicious cannellini beans and sautéed spinach, and we added puréed potatoes, which were buttery and fluffy. Desserts were a triumph: Italian wedding cake, chocolate cake, a stunning pistachio dessert, bread pudding, and Panna cotta. All were delightful. While we do appreciate the cozy atmosphere, perfected by the flickering fire in the fireplace, my one major complaint of this restaurant is that there is just one toilet per restroom. The first time I went to Da Marcos was back when b4-u-eat was still around and I provided a review of their establishment regarding the poor treatment we received by their server and manager. Fast forward 15ish years later (yikes, I'm old) and I decided to visit again for their unforgettable alba white truffle tagliolini. The ambiance is very intimate and the lighting on the tables were just perfect. The mini table lamps were spot on for the intimacy vibe of seeing the food in an appealing lighting before you gobble it up. Appetizers: Octopus 5/5 The dish was explained perfectly by the waiter as "soft inside but lightly crisp on the outside" if you like octopus, try this! Or if u don't like octopus, you'll like it after this dish. Branzino carpaccio with foie gras 3.5/5 the foie gras could've used more salt or balsamic reduction. The acidity of the carpaccio cut the foie gras fat but it did confuse me on how I normally have foie gras, the dish didnt match. There was an overwhelming amount of pine nuts on this dish. Pasta Alba white truffle tagliolini 5/5 It was exactly how I remember it. As soon as the server came out with the truffle, the smell permeated the air. By the end of our dinner, every table was getting this dish. Beautiful presentation, probably 2000 calories in the plate, the taste is unexplainable. I was smelling truffle in my breath the rest of the night. The pasta was al dente, the sauce was saucy buttery and truffley. A must try. I was disappointed we didn't get the ice cream with it afterwards like some tables did. Ravioli cacio e pepe 5/5 This was my favorite dish. I could've stopped eating after this dish. Each ravioli was soft, cooked perfectly, the cheese stuffing was sweet and the sauce balanced the sweetness. The fried guanciale reminded me of breakfast bacon, I didn't think it added much to the dish other than texture. Entree Veal porterhouse with parmesan rissoto 5/5 I was jealous of my husband for getting it. I wanted to trade. The veal was cooked closer to medium as recommended. Perfectly pink. Perfectly seasoned. I'm normally a salt dipper for my steaks but this was Perfectly seasoned and tender. The rissoto was cooked softer and came with paper thin shavings of parmesan that melted in your mouth. Short rib with burrata rissoto 4/5 I would've rated this a 5/5 if they gave me something to cut the richness. The sauce was an elegant barbecue sauce. The rissoto was more al dente and the flavor of the cheese was more on the mild side, balanced with the short rib sauce. I could've used a sweet or sour element to cut the richness. What a fantastic evening! First of all, the ambience in DaMarco's is lovely - soft lighting, warm and cozy, not too loud, comfortable seating. That was just the beginning! All our food was delicious! The three of us started out with the scallop carpaccio which was as beautiful to look at as it was delicious. I was sorry I didn't take a picture of it. For our main courses, one had the pasta special, another the duck two ways, and I had the lamb chops. Everything was perfectly done and wonderful. We shared the tiramisu which was delicious. From the nonstop bread service and high quality EVOO to the show stopping branzino carpaccio with seared foie gras, dining here is a treat. Appetizers like the perfectly cooked scallops in limoncello sauce and the tender octopus are winners. The sweet corn ravioli with hearty chunks of lobster will be seared into your memory. Lamp chops and creamy uni pasta are tasty. Short ribs aren't fall apart in your mouth good but the accompanying side of mozzarella risotto is the perfect al dente bite. For dessert, the caramelized bananas on the chocolate cake add a nice textural element to the moist, rich cake. Truly a 5 star experience Upon arrival, our car was taken by the valet who was readily available. Our table was ready and the staff wasted no time getting cold waters for us. We were served a delicious crostini and warm bread with oil to start. They had specials but we all opted for the main menu. Everything was delicious. Some had dessert which looked and smelled amazing but their pasta serving filled me up. The restaurant is small but well organized. One word for this place: phenomenal. I always have room for pasta. I came in for an anniversary lunch and oh boy, did we spend big bucks. You get complimentary valet in this semi spacious lot, as you enter you're greeted before a hostess, then taken to the dining area which was very formal with white linen table tops, a center piece, and utensils aligned perfectly for your meal. Someone brings you this appetizer that I couldn't explain what it was, but a nice start to a meal. Zucchini toast with some oomf. You are also given bread and butter. We ordered the white truffle pasta as an appetizer. Yes... pasta for an appetizer... We shared, and it was a great size to share! Definitely a pricey app costing at $110. A beautiful presentation and delicious one at that!! They put the fresh white truffle at the table and you are given table side twisted fresh pasta in this delectable sauce and fresh shaved truffle to top it off. I do want to say this was my favorite in comparison to two other truffle pastas I've had. It was light, sauce was perfectly salted and it was so creamy. I wish I could've licked the plate but that would've been embarrassing. Instead use your bread to soak all of that delicious sauce. I got the corn and lobster ravioli, and wow that was special. I loved how the corn brought the dish sweetness, lobster was butter forward and the pasta was fresh and chewy. You can absolutely tell that this pasta was homemade. The sauce brought it all together and it was just so special. I recommend this!! My boyfriend got the pappadelli pasta with wild boar. Sounds interesting and it was. I was scared that the boar would be too tough but it was not!! It had a great scent and it was soft and tender! I liked this one too!! The chocolate cake with bruleed banana and banana ice cream was okay. I definitely would come here just for the entrees. But they were sweet enough to write happy anniversary for us! Very disappointing Lunch meeting for three, at the invitation of a large international law office. One of the day specials was roasted lamb loin in Dijon mustard sauce with a side of risotto. I love lamb in almost any form so I signed for it, but, even though I love rice, I do not care much for risotto, so I asked if I could exchange it for some other side, like a small pasta portion. I was told by the waiter that absolutely not. The chef did not allow for any substitutions. The dish had been conceived to be paired with the risotto. That perhaps, he would have to ask as a special treat, the chef would allow for steamed vegetables to be served as side dish, but under no circumstances I could have a side of pasta. I accepted the risotto, because it could not be worse than a side of blanched vegetables. I was wrong. It was the worst risotto I have ever had, which is a high bar. The risotto had the consistency of very greasy potato puree (that's also what my fellow dinners agreed it looked like) with a strange buttery cheese flavor and oozing something that looked (but didn't taste) like burnt melted butter. And, more strangely, the thing had been completely pureed. There were no rice grains in the mixture. That was a first for me and my fellow dinners, one of which (legal mind) suggested that perhaps my anti risotto rumble had raised the chef's wrath, and he had messed with it to teach me a lesson. I had only one bite and left it aside. Had I been the payer instead of the guset, I would have returned the whole thing. In fairness, the lamb itself was tasty and very well cooked. But the Dijon Mustard Sauce looked, and tasted like Dijon Mustard out of the jar. I was expecting a mustard sauce like you would have in a Filet au Sauce Moutarde de Dijon, with cream (French Style), or with honey (Quebec Style), but this just made the lamb taste like hot dog. Again, I just skipped the sauce. Appetizer has a fairly good arugula and shaved parmesan salad. But, guys, it's just raw arugula and shaved parmesan. Not really a culinary event. Dessert was nocciola ice cream. Not bad, not great, quite industrial texture. Definitely did not feel like a gelato that I could have had at several Houston places Not a great experience, but definitely the worse part was the snobbery about the chef not be willing to consider a substitution to accommodate the palate of a customer. And not a place where I will spend any of my company's fairly generous meals and entertainment budget. read more

All the ingredients were fresh, service was outstanding, and the ambiance was romantic. 5/5 for food but I had to doc 1 star off, I find for the portion, it is pretty expensive. I went to Da Marco for my birthday dinner and it was an A+ experience. Da Marco is an upscale Italian restaurant located in Montrose on Westheimer. It's only open for dinner and it's valet only. My feelings on valet are well-known so you can find parking on side streets close by if it's not your cup of tea either. Da Marco has been a Houston establishment for a long time and it's often on Alison Cook's list of top 100 restaurants. Unless you're a baller, this is a special occasion type of place. The interior is homey and sophisticated, but not overly impressive. It's not spectacular like the interior of Tony's for example. But hey, we're all here for the food. They start you off asking what type of water you'd like. Make sure you say tap unless you want to get charged for an overly expensive and useless bottle of "fancy water". They bring you out a couple of complimentary small bites to start off. I'm not sure exactly what it was but my best guess would be that it was a crostini with prosciutto and arugula with some kind of spread. You also get complimentary bread and olive oil. The specials are presented to you on a chalkboard which was pretty cool. I started off with the sweet corn ravioli with lobster (one of Yelp's most highly recommended dishes!) You get three decent-sized pieces of lobster and six ravioli. I had never had ravioli with sweet corn and the dish was spectacular (5/5). A delicious and creamy sauce, the lobster was cooked just right, just a great pasta dish. For my main course, I had the chianti braised short ribs with burrata risotto (5/5). Another fantastic dish. This is fine dining so the portions aren't huge but they are just enough. Tender meat, the burrata gave the risotto a nice cheesiness to it, and a fine sauce to top it off. Da Marco was nice enough to give us a complimentary panna cotta for dessert with "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate on the plate. Panna cotta is a light Italian dessert which is basically a custard. Service was very good, thank you Da Marco for making my birthday that much more special! read more

I wanted to like this place; It's been on my list FOREVER and I was excited to finally get a chance to go here for my birthday dinner last night. I was expecting the BEST Italian food cause of all the amazing reviews and don't get me wrong, it was good.. it just didn't blow me away. Solid 3.5 stars. Valet parking and we were seated right away - smooth sailing, zero kinks. The restaurant itself was very elegant, a little more sophisticated than "homey" - but also not extremely fancy where you feel uncomfortable. Yes the waiters are dressed in black and white; However, there were people dressed up in suits and then there were folks in a jacket and jeans as well. I don't think they were extremely particular about the dress code - just don't show up too casual and you should be good, meaning jeans and a button-up shirt at least. Service was good - not the best service I'd ever had but nothing to complain about either. I was expecting a bit more from such a nice/expensive place? They present you with the specials of the day on a board, but take the board away to present to the next table before you order... The tables are a bit close together because you can hear the conversation next to you. You can also see and smell the food for the other table as it is being prepared "tableside" - omg that truffle being shaved.. he was so teasing me! =) But at the same time, my face and noise shouldn't be so close to someone elses' meal. The peach bellini was delish - I ended up getting 2 and totally not that bad in terms of pricing (at $8 a glass). Now for the most important part, the food: *Sicilian Scampi with Orange Honey Salad - the scampi was good. Grilled well and tasted like butter. The boyfriend said it was the best scampi/shrimp he's ever had. Big statement. I thought it was good. Two scampi cut in half for the ease of eating at $32; I thought it was overpriced for what it was. The scampi was sweet and cooked well. I wasn't a fan of the arugula salad with the oranges - it was just a bit too bitter. Though the scampi was good, it wasn't the best I've ever had. I've had better scampi that were sweeter and served both grilled and raw elsewhere, where the flavors of the scampi stood out a bit more than they did here because the butter/grill taste overpowered the taste of the scampi. I'm a strong believer in letting your ingredients speak for itself. 4/5 *Burrata di "Puglia", Roasted Cherry Tomatoes - The burrata was fresh and fantastic and so were the sweet roasted cherry tomatoes. Bursting with flavors. I quite liked this dish, especially because it was so refreshing - it tastes exactly like you would expect. 5/5 *Spaghetti with Wild Santa Barbara Sea Urchin, Crab & Chillies - okay so this was THE dish I wanted to try because I haven't seen sea urchin spaghetti anywhere else in Houston and I absolutely loved it when I had it in Positano. I saw photos of it on Yelp and decided then and there I had to make it here to get it. I was so disappointed. The spaghetti was not serve al dente, there was no "bite" to the pasta. It was actually a bit overcooked. The flavors of the sea urchin did not stand out - it was overpowered by the crab and everything else, which made the dish a bit too "fishy". I think I could've done without the crab, I didn't end up eating all the crab pieces and thought it didn't add to the dish at all. There were small pieces of shell in my meal, most likely from the crab. I cut the chilli up a bit to add a kick to the dish, but it was just an "addition" on the side and didn't add to the dish either - the crab and the chilli didn't compliment well. To me it didin't feel like it blended together well in flavors. I'm glad I ordered the primi size because the server told me there was also a larger dinner size - I definitely wouldn't have finished it. It was rich and saucy and a bit too much to want more of. 3/5 *Prime Strip "Tagliata" Market Mushrooms - the steak was tender and buttery but I feel like there was, again, too much sauce because it overpowers the flavors of the meat. The mushrooms may have been the best part of this dish. 3/5 Overall, the service was good. The place was nice. We loved the appetizers more than the main dishes. The mains were just okay.. and not worth the price because the portions are way small for what you pay. I also think if you pay for a nice meal, you want premium quality ingredients and with the best ingredients, you want those main ingredients to stand out in your dish. The steak should've stood out and spoke for itself, just like the sea urchin and the spaghetti should have stood out and been cooked perfectly. Yet it didn't and the sauce overpowered it. $125 for the truffle pasta? I really wanted this but I don't think I'll be back for it because of my experience with the other dishes. If you want to charge $52 for a small pasta dish, the noodles better be cooked to perfection regardless what sauce it is served with. read more

I selected Da Marco as the place to treat the entire family out for a Christmas time dinner. The reservation for 12 Asian people that night looked way out of place here in a predominantly Caucasian(?) crowd. Though dressed in business casual attire, I had a feeling of being under-dressed in such a formal looking place where the servers and waiters are in black suits*. Most of our party arrived at the same time with four people lagging behind. The restaurant chose not to bring out any food, drink or even a menu until EVERYONE is present and seated. This was annoying at the least. So once the last 3 came, seating was quite tight; their solution of mashing several tables together did not fare well. Most of us were touching shoulder to shoulder making eating or drinking difficult. I moved my seat outward and had everyone space out in order to get more comfortable. When I asked the manager to help in this situation; all he said was that there was no more room. Thanks much for the help and accommodation, sir! Even the waiter had issues getting in and out to refill our drinks and deliver food to the table(s). After we finally settled down, the orders I could remember** were: Two bottles of 2009 Jermann Pino Nero Friuli Red Angel wine for the legal aged adult drinkers. Starters: Pizza margherita - tomato sauce, cheese, basil and doughy crust. Alright, sauce a bit bland. Frisee salad with pears - slightly bitter but coupled with pears works out quite well Arugula salad - good, no other comments received on this Main Entrees: Lobster ravioli - "delicious!" says the niece Pappardelle pasta with rabbit - tender meat and tasty however overcooked pasta was reported on one of the three dishes ordered. Calf liver "veneziana" with polenta - I love liver prepared right and his one was on point. the gaminess wasn't apparent with the smooth polenta. My favorite dish. Barramundi - whole fish - the better half thought it was good but nothing special. Gnocchi - sister-in-law didn't feel like it has much flavor and mushy. Roasted Texas quail with braised fava beans. I was not able to get much feedback, only an "it was okay" response. Dessert: Panna Cotta - smooth and silky. Coffee ordered for a few of us at the end of the dinner. Summary: I did not personally taste each and every one of the entrees we ordered but judging by everyone's feedback: the snooty attitude directed towards us the entire time was unwelcoming plus food didn't impress as much as initially anticipated/hyped. For a fourth, maybe a fifth of the price, I could have taken the family to Chinese restaurant and ended up with a happier and satisfied crowd. ______________________________ *I found out later that it I should've worn my suit. Classic, timeless, elegant. Awesome snapper especial served with crab meat ($39). Tasty but not well presented truffle pasta ($75). Servers shredded the truffle as if it was Parmesan. The pasta (looked like spaghetti) was too thin and I was not given the option of risotto. The waiter lacked to communicate options and service was not as expected from Da Marco. Some people will say that this is the best restaurant in Houston, and I can definitely see why! Especially for Valentine's Day dinner, Da Marco exceeded my expectations. My ideal romantic dinner is in a traditional Italian restaurant setting, and this restaurant fit my description perfectly. Our dining experience had an excellent start with some refreshing bubbly prosecco and fresh delicious bread. The olive oil was also exceptionally tasty. First course: the scallops were well cooked and tender, and the dressed greens were a perfect light accompaniment. The tuna carpaccio was also wonderfully-melt-in-your-mouth tasty. Secondi: my lobster ravioli was perfect. The sweet corn stuffing in the ravioli added the perfect balance of sweetness to the rich lobster. Main course: beef filet with foie gras was an amazing concoction in the mouth. This was by far one of the most amazing filets I've ever tasted. Perfectly medium rare and tender as well. I was afraid the port wine sauce would mask the taste of the beef, but it was just right! Dessert: even with all this food, there was somehow enough room for these excellent dessert options. The caramel bread pudding was heavenly, as was the chocolate lava cake. Both of these shared together were the perfect combination of chocolatey and sweetness. A wonderful dining experience overall. My date and I left the restaurant happy as can be. Da Marco is the right way to dine for a romantic experience for sure! read more

Da Marco is a cute spot to dress up and have dinner at in Montrose area, but expect to spend some money on small portions that do not do you justice. I ordered the sweet corn ravioli and had barely any lobster and only 5 small ravioli squares. Maybe that's fine dining, but the corn was overpowering + I finished my meal in 5 mins after waiting for a hour. It was also my gfs and I early bday dinner and so when we ordered the dessert (even though it was comped), we received 2 very small square piece of cake. The cake was really dry. The overall experience was ok, service was a little slow, food was pricey, you can't get full at the place but will spend easily $100+ I won't be visiting again... read more

We had a beautiful dinner for our anniversary and my husbands birthday. Our waiter Steven S helped us from start to finish with selections, and he did not disappoint! For starters I'm not a big wine drinker. I'm more of a martini girl. (They don't serve spirits) But I described the flavors and mouth feel of the type of wines that I like and without hesitation he brought me one of the best wines I've ever had. I was very impressed! Steven knows my taste as he was my go to waiter at another high end Italian restaurant. But that was a couple years ago and he still remembers what I like. When it came time to order the meal I left it to him to help with the choices. He remembered that I like fois gras and made a request of the chef to prepare something special for me off menu. It was amazing! The flavors on that plate were divine!! Fois with berries, figs and a silky reduction that tied it together. Was the best combination of flavors with fois gras. Next my husband and I both had a small pasta dish. You Must try their pasta! Best in town! It's handmade daily, never frozen. The texture is perfect. He had short rib ravioli and I had one of the specials with very tender, melt in your mouth boar meat. Both excellent! For the main course we shared the branzino which was also great. I asked about gnocchi to go with it. I prefer it with a butter or cream sauce, over red, so once again Steven asked the chef to prepare something special. I think they should add it as a side. Oh it was so good! Soft pillows sautéed in a garlic butter sauce. I think it was roasted garlic because it was soft and mild. It was just delicious. I could just eat bread in that sauce and be happy. I do need to mention their bread. It's very good and dangerous if you don't eat a lot. But what really puts it over the top is their own DaMarco olive oil that they have made in Italy. Oh my. Best mild fruity flavor of any olive oil I've had. I actually thought it was infused with something but I couldn't figure it out. I've just never had an oil so good by itself. You can even buy it by the bottle. For dessert Steven suggested the panna cotta. We wanted something a little light after that big meal. And again, delicious! I can't describe the sauce except to say it added a pop of flavor that worked perfect with the mild vanilla of the panna cotta. Was a great dinner! I highly recommend it! But also, Steven always adds to my dining experience. I like to talk and have a good time and he always engages in conversation and is such a nice guy. He's very knowledgeable with the menu and wine and if you tell him things you like he will steer you to the perfect choices. read more

I've been here twice. First time was about 6 years ago, and it was excellent, but I never took the time to write a review. This last time was quite different. We came as a party of 4. Covid still being relatively prevalent, the tables were spread out and the staff seemingly thinned out. Unfortunately, service was subpar. I hate saying that because it's hard being a server during these times. But with the lack of patronage, I would assume they'd be highly attentive, especially since we came earlier than the majority of the crowd. It took a while for anyone to come to our table to take an order. The way they explained the special menu items seemed like they didn't really know them well, the bread was cold and the oil tasteless and without any herbs or fun stuff to dip in. The food was expensive for the amount. The short rib dish was plentiful though. However, nothing truly stood out. They only have Italian wines. We decided on a bottle close to $100, I think maybe it was a brunello, but not sure. It just wasn't good. We had a few desserts and they seemed dry and low on the taste spectrum.
