Once your order is ready your number is called and you pick up your tray of food. There is signage in the restaurant indicating that they are self-serve and that you shouldn't tip. My girlfriend and I ordered beef soup and a seafood pancake. The food was prepared fairly quickly and they called our number to pick up the food from the counter. The seafood pancake was pretty good. Very flavorful but I felt like it was thicker and more doughy than I prefer. I would probably skip this for the next visit. The beef soup was delicious as well. It was just the right temperature and it was salty and savory enough without being overwhelming. We went on a particularly cold day so the hot soup really hit the spot. The pieces of beef in the soup were super tender too. Continuing the self-service theme there was a water dispenser and there was even a dispenser of broth at the pick up counter. I liked that broth even more than the broth in the beef soup. I slurped up several cups of it. I'd certainly come back.

We found the quality to be good, especially for the value of the meal. Loved that it wasn't overloaded with rice, too. I asked if my takeout order was ready and was told it would be "a few more minutes." After waiting approximately 15 minutes, I checked again and was given the same response. During that time, numerous dine-in customers continued to be seated, and several other customers were also waiting for takeout orders. About 10 minutes later, I asked for another update. The employee attempted to explain the timing on my receipt, but I pointed out that the estimated pickup time had already passed and that I was simply looking for an accurate status update. She went to the kitchen to check and returned with the receipt again, at which point it became clear that my order had not even been started. After waiting nearly an hour from the time I placed my order, I asked for it to be canceled and left. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this has happened when I've ordered takeout from this restaurant. I completely understand that restaurants get busy, especially during peak dinner hours, but if the kitchen cannot keep up with both dine-in and online orders, it would be much better to temporarily disable online ordering until the backlog is under control. Other nearby restaurants, such as Okinami, do exactly that to avoid long waits and frustrated customers. The food has always been decent, but it is simply not worth waiting almost an hour for a takeout order--especially when the order hadn't even been started and I was repeatedly told it would only be "a few more minutes." I would much rather be given an honest estimate upfront than continue waiting without any meaningful update. Better communication and better management of online orders would go a long way toward improving the customer experience.

Though not huge, their menu is plant based with an assortment of brunch/lunch items like bowls, salads and interesting sushi, as well as smoothies and other drinks. If you're open to vegan food and uncommon items in a western diet, you'll enjoy it. The pad thai slaw and sushirito were delicious and well made and everything on the menu was inviting. The teas were lovely and I really enjoyed being able to select a blend of herbs for my tea mug. There was some herbal water available, and a selection of desserts on the counter and in the fridge - chocolatey delights like "snickers" bars. We found a corner next to the stage with two armchairs and a coffee table which was the coziest corner to sit and chat. Though it was Friday afternoon at lunch time and there were several other small groups, it never felt crowded and we were able to stay for a few hours enjoying our tea and meal. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, and non-intrusive. You order at the counter and then sit down, and we were not disturbed at all besides our meal being brought to us when it was ready. Parking is limited but at least they have a lot. It's a short walk into the main part of the town. They also occasionally host events. Looking forward to returning!

Having lived in Los Angeles/Orange County for the past 26 years, I'm kind of a snob when it comes…read moreto Vietnamese food, Pho, in particular. I was amazed when I found this little hole-in-the-wall gem in one of my old haunts, Closter. I decided to give it a try. I got two bowls of the beef combo Pho, a single order of the regular beef Pho, the Spicy Ma Mi banh mi sandwich, and a Vietnamese Iced Coffee. These items are the easiest to judge, as most of the Vietnamese restaurants around Bergen County and the surrounding area kind of fail, choosing to cater to the population (skimping on spice, choosing western ingredients over authentic Asian ingredients, etc.). When I picked up my call-in order, the woman at the counter was very nice, though not Vietnamese and neither was the cook (not a problem at all, just an observation). She handed my order and I paid with a nice tip. I made it almost half way home when I got a call from the restaurant, and the same person told me she forgot to hand me the Vietnamese Iced Coffee and apologized. I made a u-turn and drove back to Ma Mi Eatery and picked up my drink. None of this exchange knocks any points against them, in fact, I was happy they called me. When I got home and unpacked everything, it all looked pretty authentic. I started with the combo beef Pho, adding all the toppings, plus the condiments of Hoisin sauce and Sriracha. What was missing was the fresh Thai basil! Then I read the menu and saw that they put the basil IN the soup when they serve it, so when I got home, all the basil was wilted. That's a shame because every single AAA Pho restaurant in Westminster, California serves their Pho with fresh Thai basil so customers can control how much basil they want, and to prevent wilting. That is my only real critique. Otherwise, the Pho was delicious, the broth was flavorful, and the really LOADED the soup with beef. Seriously, a lot of places in Westminster aren't that generous with brisket, but Ma Mi made my day. The Spicy Ma Mi banh mi sandwich was delicious, and loaded with all the appropriate toppings and condiments, though I wish they packed the wet ingredients (pickled carrot and daikon, cilantro, jalapeño) so the bread wouldn't get soggy, which it did, slightly. The bread itself was not the best bread I've had, typically, the bread used in most Vietnamese sandwich shops have a flaky crust and airy soft bread inside. This one a bit coarse on the crust with a heavy crunch. The interior was okay though. All in all, it was a great effort. The next time I revisit my hometown, I'll be sure to stop by Ma Mi Eatery for sure.
