I actually like their lemon ice tea because I like how tea has a good amount of lemon taste in it. Everything else came out hot, fresh and of course delicious too. If you like ramen that's a little spicy then mapo tofu ramen is for you. Black garlic ramen smells appetizing, my husband said it was good but I did not have a taste of it because he ate it all. Had a coupon for 15% off for take out or dine in and since it was a bit cold tonight, I thought why not. They have a great combo meal option which I decided to get, a mini tan tan ramen, mini curry, and chicken katsu. The mini is a decent amount of food and filled me up that I could only take one bite of my curry. I think it's supposed to be a meat curry but there were only a few strands of beef in mine. Chicken katsu was standard. We also had the fish katsu which was crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. We called our order in and it was ready within 10 minutes, super fast. The combos here are a great deal - a mini (which is really a reasonable adult portion) ramen or udon, plus 2 sides (we tried the shrimp katzu, gyozas, and fried rice) for $12.95. They're also really fast. So, for a large, affordable, quick fast food-style meal, this place fills the need. But, you get what you pay for and the food is all ok, but nothing fabulous. The best of the sides was definitely the gyozas. We tried the tan tan and black garlic ramen, and neither had much depth. They met their respective namesakes of slightly spiced sesame, and garlic, but the predominant flavor to both was just salt. It is your standard ramen place and I think it's on par with Gomatei. Both are places that are your standard run-of-the-mill ramen which tasted kind of instant. Sorry guys I've eaten at places like Noods, Golden Pork, and Manichi so it's really hard for me to stomach any other kind of ramen at this point. I'm extremely picky, but this is definitely a very good place for huge families since the price is reasonable and they give huge portions. Not my cup of tea though, I drink kombucha. Pretty good place to grab a bite for lunch! Came at around 1pm on the weekend and it was calm, so perfect time to go over here. I ordered the Black Garlic Udon and it was really good - the broth was very flavorful, and the udon was cooked perfectly. We ordered about $63.00 for gyoza, tako yaki, unagi don, mini calamari plate, and mi hijo chicken plate. They all came out pretty fast which was good since we had kids with us. Mmmmmm another good ramen spot ! Was craving soup after all the hearty thanksgiving food we devoured and this was one of the ramen places available on bitesquad. I was also super shocked our bitesquad delivery lady brought it back to us in one piece, usually when we order ramen it's leaking and everything is smashed so it was nice for it to come right away and nothing ruined. Props to that bitesquad lady! Back to the ramens lol, so many choices I had a hard time deciding but went with my usual tonkatsu, but tried their spicy tonkatsu! Also got pork fried rice & gyoza. The spicy tonkatsu was spot on! The spice was a good level spice, could've been spicier for my preference but still great. The fried rice was a little dry but honestly if you dip it in your soup it makes it better and adds the moisture missing hahah. My wife and I used to frequent the neighborhood Daiichi Ramen in Aiea until it closed. The food was always pretty decent so when we were in the mood for ramen when we were in the Kaimuki area we decided to try the new Daiichi Ramen in Kahala. The restaurant is brand new and very clean. The menu is the same as Aiea's but the prices sure went up, I guess that's to be expected. The service was efficient, though not very friendly. My wife ordered the shoyu ramen and gyoza combination while I opted for the pork yakisoba. Our order came out in a timely manner and looked great. My yakisoba was good though a little under seasoned but the gyoza was terrific. My wife complained to me that her broth was weak even after adding shoyu twice, which my wife never does. I tasted her broth and agreed that it was too tasteless. I think you can gauge the quality of a ramen shop by trying a simple shoyu ramen. If the can't do this right it may not be worth coming back. read more

After a disappointing first encounter with their Mabo Ramen... I decided to give them another chance. Only because Goma-tei had a long line and I had to work at night. I ordered a Shoyu Ramen with hopes it would be better than the Mabo Ramen. When the bowl came, the super over done hard boiled egg screamed at me like my friend who's like "Don't take my picture!!!!! The reason for the success is smart management, clean restaurants, but most importantly tasty grinds, big portions, reasonable prices. My go to is the Ramen combo with two sides. This is definitely not your hoity toity boutique ramen spot. But here's what it is. Good food, inexpensive, clean surroundings, lightning fast and attentive service. You know how you order something in a restaurant that you KNOW they had to prepare in advance, like chili or stew or something that you want to have been cooking for hours (or days), and it takes forever to come out, and you're like, "WTH... how long does it take to scoop it into a bowl?" This is NOT that place. I barely had time to unwrap my chopsticks and open my phone to check in on Yelp when my curry rice and gyoza arrived. 30 seconds later, there was my tonkotsu ramen. They claim their broth has been simmering for 12 hours, and it was quite tasty, with a huge portion of noodles. You know how in some restaurants you have to stare at your empty water glass for minutes, or pick it up and tilt your head back and hope the server can see the glass is upside down, or shake the empty ice in the glass really loudly, and hope the server can hear it? Not here. If I took a couple of sips of the lovely lemon flavored water, they were right there with a refill. Once the glass almost made it to half empty but from out of nowhere the server swooped in topped it off. Lest you think all this plentiful food and ambiance and service might be expensive, allow me disabuse you of the notion. A "mini" ramen (which was not very mini), curry rice, and gyoza was $12.45. I want to come back to try the black garlic ramen and the cheesecake, and I just might do it during "happy hour" , because... well... free gyoza! read more

Early errands Hubby and I took keiki #4 to lunch. Restaurant is always clean(been here over ten times already we love it so much). Masks are required and worn by staff. Hand sanitizer is provided at front counter. Contact tracing information slip are required upon seating. No temp checks. Sanitizing between customers is thoroughly done. Social distance and limited capacity are enforced. One restroom in the restaurant, always very clean and toiletries are always full. Free parking in strip mall. Same as Kahala Foodland. There are two marked stalls in front for takeout/phone orders. They'll bring it out to you with a smile. Now for my faves. I'm a Shio and Shoyu Ramen type. Love me some bamboo shoots and char siu. The ramen has a clear flavor to it. It's not over powering but it's tasty. It's piping hot when served and the noodles are perfectly cooked. For three Katsu's: I've tried Chicken Katsu- juicy, not dried and tough , Fish Katsu- delicate and flaky with a crisp outside, Shrimp Katsu- it's very crispy and it's a lighter taste than the later. I like to eat it with my ramen for that texture difference. For the curry- the potatoes and carrots are cooked perfectly, no mush here. My daughter loves the curry-that's been her go to favorite weather on udon or on rice. She loves it. The mandoo is cooked just right not too chewy. My hubby's favorite is the black garlic udon. It's a powerful punch of flavor. He usually gets the combo with the mini curry. My second favorite is the crispy noodle with shrimp and vegetables. The noodles are nice and thin and super crispy. The shrimp and veggies are piping hot in a smooth sauce. This is enough to feed a couple of people. You can even add an extra serving of noodles. I find that the ratio is more shrimp and veggies to noodles so i like to order extra noodles. The veggies still have a crisp to them and the shrimp are plump and juicy. I usually get hot tea and water is served when you are seated. I've done takeout, eaten with just hubby and I and taken the whole family. The staff is very attentive and polite. Daiichi ramen is my go-to spot for a quick, late-ish night comfort meal that's not zippys. They are open until 10, so I usually go in around 9:15, and there's hardly anyone eating in, which I'm a lot more comfortable with. The food comes out pretty quick, less than 10 minutes. My favorite is the combo where you get either a small udon or ramen, and either one or two sides. I got a tan tan ramen (cost a little extra), and the sides of curry rice and chicken katsu. The curry is pretty big, but there's no meat. Gyoza is good too. There's happy hour (2:30-5?) where you can get a free order of gyoza. We also tried the mapo tofu, which was okay. Kind of blown away that this has the same amount of stars as Tenkaippin. I went because Tenkaippin was closed late night and should've known not to waste money on these fast food ramen places. This was similar to my most recent experience at Ramen-Ya. Wait staff weren't as curt as at Ramen-Ya, but didn't talk to you at all outside of necessity. I ordered a Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen, which came out in less than 5 minutes so I already knew it couldn't be good. The bowl smelled like an entire can of menma (bamboo shoots) was just thrown in it, juice and all. The broth was okay, just kind of creamy/salty with little tonkatsu flavor. The egg was boiled through and not even soaked in shoyu. The noodles were undercooked. The pork at best was overcooked and underseasoned. If I'm being honest, it tasted kind of spoiled so I stopped eating the pork and half expected to wake up with food poisoning. The fishcake was fine. Their garnish was this weird thin red stuff that looked almost like really thin red ginger or saffron but had no flavor. The texture of this stuff was like eating hair. I was disappointed, because my last few bites of noodles (which I finished because I was nervous to finish the pork) were full of the hairy-textured garnish. I scarfed it down because I needed to eat dinner and I swear I was in and out of the restaurant within 20 minutes. I kid you not, this is eerily similar to my Ramen-Ya review. It's nice to have a new ramen shop on this side of the island. Daiichi just opened in the new Kuono Marketplace across Kahala Mall. There's a 15% grand opening discount along with their free gyoza happy hour, 2:30-5:00pm. So we had to get there pronto! First of all, I noticed how shiny and new the condiments are. A plus is having the dried garlic bits available. Yum, garlic! So naturally I had to try the black garlic ramen. It was very satisfying. The broth is rich and flavorful and the noodles are not too mushy, not too firm. It comes with kamaboko, half a shoyu egg, menma (love those bamboo shoots), and charsiu. My hubs got the shrimp spicy udon. It was loaded with won bok and broccoli and shrimp. It had a mildly spicy broth. It seemed like a good choice if you feel you need more vegetables in your life. First time eating here ever. They just opened their newest store across from Kahala Mall. Decided to give it try after looking up their menu online. We did a takeout order since we're still not free from covid19. They answered the phone right away and were very friendly and helpful. We ordered a miso ramen combo with chicken katsu and fried rice, a beef curry with rice, a shoyu ramen combo with gyozas, and a side order calamari. Order was ready quickly and everything was in our box correctly. Generous portions. Both ramens were flavorful. The fried rice was really good. You could see what was put into it compare to other restaurants where the ingredients are so tiny and have no taste. The gyoza was really good, I liked them a lot. My husband enjoyed the chicken katsu. The calamari was ok, but it might be because it wasn't crispy fresh like if you eat it at the restaurant. But that's what happens with takeout. I definitely would try it again when dining in. The beef curry was ok, in my opinion it had to much rice. But the beef was tender and the veggies were cooked well. I think next time it's fried rice, ramen, and gyozas for me. Overall, this is a great new restaurant in the Waialae area. We look forward to eating here in the future.
