Red River has precious few restaurants open in the off season and fewer open evenings. Several places were listed as open but actually closed. I tried Dairy Bar after noticing but not trying over several visits and finally gave it a go as something beyond my primary options. Reuban and fries were wonderful and the Italian sandwich was equally good. I ordered 15 minutes before closing but got the impression that dining in would be welcomed as well. Nice option for dinner, I should have gotten a shake as well. read more

How does this place pass a health inspection? Yikes. We went for ice cream and stood at the front counter getting thoroughly grossed out by the minute. We ended up ordering dip cones and leaving. The ice cream tasted like dirt water and none of us ate more than two bites before tossing them. The entire place looks like it hasn't been cleaned in decades. The prep counter was disgusting and the floor was covered in food and filth. The inches of grease on the walls, the hood vent and the roof should have been our sign to run. The food was great! My wife loved the grilled chicken salad so much that we ate it here multiple times during our trip. I had a BLT that was awesome and a double cheeseburger which was pretty good but very messy to eat. We also ordered an amazing coconut milkshake. read more

This burger and ice cream place has a good selection of burgers and sandwiches that come with excellent french fries. They forgot the chipotle aioli on my burger, but we got some as a side (more spice and less mayo would make me happier, but it really improved the burger, which was good to begin with) and it all worked out well. They use Stubborn Soda, which tastes similar to IBC, and makes a good root beer float. Prices for burgers are reasonable considering the cost of ingredients and shipping costs to a small town. There was a nice menu of ice cream treats although we didn't try anything other than the float (yet). Indoor seating is spaced out pretty well, and looked clean. We went for ice cream. Since the place is called "Dairy Bar," I foolishly thought they would be good at ice cream. Apparently all they have is soft-serve, which would be fine, except that they only have two flavors- and today they were out of chocolate. I wanted a dip cone with vanilla-chocolate twist, but when I ordered the cashier told me they only had vanilla. Okay, just vanilla then. My husband ordered a float with their black cherry soda- guess what! They were out of that, too, so he ended up with a Coke float (I feel it's worth mentioning that they use soft-serve in their floats. I'd never seen that before.). The chocolate dip is just okay, and the soft-serve itself is watery and bland. I was extremely underwhelmed by this place. Maybe Dairy Bar's savory dishes are better than their ice cream? Food Review: Bacon Cheese Burger - grilled, well done with melted cheddar cheese, crispy bacon (they aren't stingy with the bacon), pickles, onions, lettuce and tomatoes is really good. It's a small burger but has a big taste. Yummy! French Fries - thick cut fries, fried to a golden crisp, seasoned with a sprinkle of salt and served hot. Delicious! Onion Rings - battered fried onions are just ok. They are a bit soggy and the batter slides off the onion easily. Wings - frozen to fried bite size nuggets, fried and smothered in Buffalo hot sauce. Good place to go for quickish lunch. Shakes are the star of the offerings. Burgers have good flavor but the different versions of burgers we all had ended up looking and tasting the same. For example, the grilled onions on one burger were still crunchy and white, not caramelized at all. Fries were good but hardly any given with your order for the price. read more

The inside of the restaurant is ol' timey biege, almost a working class decor for the working man stepping in with their mud-stained boots, frayed hat brims and large appetites. I ordered the Wild West burger with a butterscotch shake and tater tots. The shake shared more of a vanilla touch, but the consistency was good for a 80s summer day. The burger is essentially a patty melt, heavily butter toasts with nice plump onion rings. Reminds me of why I have fat on me, but it was worth it. Tots were lightly salted, which was a first for me in a long time. The frying consistency perhaps the best part, crumbling away at each bite. Very good burgers but a little on the small side for the price. I had the New Mexican with green Chiles and he had the right amount of heat. I guess the Texan in me hoped for something bigger. I wasn't impressed with the ice cream. I got mine with butterfinger and the butterfinger was definitely where the flavor was at. I would give a lower rating, but the food is actually pretty good. I give them a ZERO for failing to adhere to state requirements regarding face coverings for the employees. There were at least four employees who had their face coverings off and hanging down their faces or necks while they prepared everyone's food, drinks and desserts. They cover back up when they talk to you at the window and hand you their food. So, basically they're touching their masks, faces and handling the food without washing their hands in between. I've seen a lot of businesses have a cup for clean pens and for dirty pins. Everyone uses the same pin here. I give them 5 starts for food though. For fast food, walk-up, quick (when not busy) service, they do have good food and good desserts. read more
