Hear ye! Hear ye! Calling all ice cream lovers! Come gather 'round and I'll tell you the tale of the famous Vermont creemee. The Dairy Creme is a Vermont staple, especially for those of us living in Central Vermont. Many wait with great trepidation to hear when the Dairy Creme will serve its first creemee of the season; a tell-tale sign that summer has begun. Now, I know what you're saying. What the hell is a creemee? Well, my dear friends, a creemee is what other states and other non-Vermont people (we'll leave the Woodchucks & Flatlanders debate for another time) call soft serve. It really feels so wrong for me to say soft serve having grown up knowing that was the give away that someone was from out of state. Now, we all know that Vermont is known for their maple products. It's a natural progression from maple syrup to a maple creemee, but I recommend going to Bragg Farm or Morse Farm for one of those bad babies. Here at the Dairy Creme, you can still get a maple creemee, but they have soooooooo many other ice cream creations, concoctions, and choices for you to try. And YES! THERE ARE DAIRY-FREE OPTIONS FOR THOSE OF US WHO CANNOT HAVE THE MILK! That being said, I often don't care about my body when ice cream or cheese is involved and you can spot me picking dairy-filled options most of the time. My personal favourites are the M&M creemee cookie with vanilla creemee, a small peanut butter blizzard with oreos or butterfingers, or a small hot fudge sundae with extra whipped cream. Shout out to my whipped cream buddy, Rachel Barich (you can find her here on Yelp & on Instagram @rachsfoodfuel)! And, like all good things, you know that summer has come to its end when the Dairy Creme serves its last creemee & closes up for the winter months ahead. Thus the flow of one season in Vermont into the next continues on its way. If you're in my neck of the woods this or any summer, I highly recommend giving Dairy Creme a try. Ok let me begin with the events that led us to Dairy Creme that day. We were visiting the beautiful state of Vermont under very capricious circumstances to begin with and our journey took us to within 15 minutes of the Canadian border. Being that far north I had to take a detour into Burlington in order to hit up a couple of spots seen on Man vs Food, namely Beansie's Bus ( for award winning Fries and Michigan dogs, Detroit style with chili sauce) and Handy's Lunch ( famous for they're Texas footlongs and again chili sauce and the breakfast challenge featured in the episode. Both establishments have been in business for 80 odd years and were listed as open 7 days a week. I booked our hotel for one night within walking distance of both and we were looking forward to the experience and coming from NYC and figuring in the 6 hour drive and our ages ( mid to late 60s) it would most likely be a bucket list trip to hot dog heaven. Well ... imagine our disappointment when we get to the bus ( parked in the same spot in the northwest corner of the park since 1945 ) and finding out not only were they closed that day but for the next week plus so they could be at the Champlain Valley Fair 20 minutes away!! Weeep Whomp!! No Michigan dogs for you!!! So we say okay we'll just have to settle for Handy's on Monday morning (everyone is open on Monday, right?) WRONG!! Double weeep whomp!! Denied!! We felt like the Griswalds and if there was a carton Moose in front he woulda gotten another punch in the snout!! Okay so now to Yelp to find another place along the way for which yo get our HD fix and attempt to salvage this Sisyphean journey. We find there's another long time establishment serving ice cream and a side hustle of various lunch staples that includes (you guessed it, HOTDOGS!!) https://www.dairycreme.com/story. We pull in and step up to the counter and to our combined amazement they are OPEN FOR BUSINESS!! Glory and Hallelujah! We quickly perused the menu and see the elusive tubular meat treats listed and ask the gracious host beyond the plexiglass sliding service window for two and inquire as to toppings, he says "You can have them any way you want!!" I say do you have Chili? " No sorry, no chili" how about Sauerkraut? " You're striking out here, no 'kraut!" We settle on mustard and onions and he explains the they're more famous for their ice cream and apologizes and I continue to tell him the backstory that led us to his fine place of business and he congenially listens to our tale of wiener woe. We pay at the window an I drop a couple of bucks down the convenient "Tip Tube" on the outside counter that included instructions on how to properly send your folded lengthwise George Washington on it's fun journey!! We follow the signs around the counter to the Food Delivery window and in no time pick up the long awaited goal of this thus far fruitless (meatless?) quest ... the dog rivals Costco in its girth and is simply topped with yellow mustard and chopped onions and totally hit the spot and satisfied our longing even if not footlonging ... we sat on the picnic tables provided on the high banks of the River on a beautiful late summer early afternoon and consumed our tubular treats that had taken on a life of their own ... Now for the famous Cremeee!! After much discussion we both decide on our flavor choices and I choose Maple(it's Vermont it's kind of a law up here) and Black Raspberry twist and my better half opts for Toasted Coconut... I return to the window and proceed with my order only to be informed that the Toasted Coconut machine is down and that we could have a toasted coconut dip instead!! I told him that on any other day and any other circumstances that I might find this hard to bear but it's his lucky day and we have learned the hard lessons and accept our fate. And quite a delicious date it was, dear reader! Served in a classic cake cone the small sized( don't be deceived it was HUGE!) soft serve confection surpassed our jaded NYC expectations and sent us on our merry way with hope in our hearts, a slight brain freeze in our heads and satisfaction in our stomachs!! If you ever find yourself on I89 going south from Burlington to Montpelier please veer off and find Dairy Creme and send a couple of simoleons down the chute and enjoy some truly fine frozen treats. read more

We drove from Stowe to Montpelier so we could go to the Dairy Creme and the Morse Farm Maple Sugar Works. First strike against Dairy Creme is they will only give one taste per person. Second strike was that the creemee was not good. I ordered a kiddie size of maple and butterscotch. The consistency was thin. The flavor was weak. I threw it out. I was beginning to think this creemee thing was a hoax until we tried a creemee at the Morse Farm Sugar Works (review to follow). I'm not sure why our experience wasn't like others. The soft serve I got was average. I saw a sign that said they serve Hood soft serve. It was watery when it melted not like the good stuff. My wife asked for a creamee and hers was the same as mine. Portions are large so there is that. Otherwise we were not impressed. Doesn't help that it's along a busy street and you sit in a parking lot with minimal view of the river. read more

One must make the trek to Vermont for excellent ice cream with any and all of the toppings that you could imagine. Now, had this been frozen custard it would have been a real contender for a truly outstanding dessert spot, but then that is my personal taste. Their creemees are one of the best that Vermont has to offer and extremely satisfying on a hot day. We ordered their maple and vanilla flavored creemees and they tasted rich, creamy, and not too sweet, which I appreciated. Portion sizes are very generous. We enjoyed the view of the Winooski River as we ate our creemees outside the establishment. Good texture for the ice cream, I didn't get much marshmallow sauce, but found it tasty and the total for three ice creams (one for our dogs to share) came to under $9. Very reasonably priced and lots of flavors and toppings to pick from you'll want to come back again to try something new - with or without your waistlines permission. They have a size chart but honestly I think your serving is much more than what they state. My husband's size "small" was the equivalent to a large! Great if you have a big appetite but it'll make you sad if you have to toss the rest from a crazy sugar rush. YUMM. Grew up on cremes and yup, this is the real deal. Granted the choices are greater now but start yourselves on a pure vanilla twist and move on from there. I understand the watered down taste people have been mentioning. It tastes like they mix the ice cream with water instead of milk. It still tastes good enough to eat though and the portions are huge. I know some local person reading this probably wants to shoot me after reading that but seriously, for those "generalists" out there...people who are just visiting from some other part of the country or whatever, "soft serve" is probably a good point of reference. This soft-serve is unlike any other soft-serve we've ever had before. It is incredible. Extraordinarily creamy, and a bazillion flavors to choose from. And like, delicious real flavors--not just flavors from artificial syrups (i.e. the oreo has real chunks of oreo in it!). I always wanted to get an ice cream from Dairy Queen but never had the chance. After finding this place, I don't care what Dairy Queen soft serve tastes like! These are the best creamees! And the way that they form the chocolate ones look just like Dairy Queen's in the commercials! I've never had their food so I can't really comment on it. Their shakes and sundaes are good if you want to take a break from the traditional creamee, but I always get a small with snickers on top. Another cool part about this place is that when you say 'small' it really means 'medium'. If you want to get a real small ice cream then you ask for a 'little peoples'. I love that this place has been around for so long and I hope that it continues that way. I went by the place this past weekend and they're set to open in April. Their season usually lasts until the first couple of weeks of September, as I've heard they pretty much stay open until they run out of materials. read more

I am amazed at the way life in Vermont raises the mundane to high art... especially with food. This place is no exception. Soft serve that the locals call a "creemee" is so much more than airy dairy fluff in a cone... it's insanely creamy! And tastes so much better than it has any right to! Is this really just soft serve ice cream? I'm always bummed that the vanilla and chocolate have to always be in a twist machine together because some of their off-road flavors have weird machine partners... peppermint and black raspberry? Best blizzard EVAH! The soft-serve is really great and my Oreo blizzard was perfectly blended - not what you get sometimes where the toppings are all on top and the bottom is not blended. Coming from Rhode Island, my boyfriend and I hadn't ever heard of "creemee" before, but were interested in trying it out, as we're definitely ice cream fans. I couldn't really tell the difference between it and soft serve, only that maybe it was a little bit more soft. We ordered one chocolate-dipped pumpkin pie cone and a yellow cake batter sundae with hot fudge and caramel. My boyfriend loved his, although it was really messy, and I enjoyed mine (but would ultimately prefer regular ice cream if given a choice). Seems to be the only place in Montpelier to get any kind of soft serve or ice cream dessert, and we were very happy with the quality and price ($7 for two mediums). read more
