I wasn't planning to go to Bohemian--merely stopped by since I was in the area and hungry. That said, you SHOULD plan to go here. When I walked in and smelled the bakery, I knew i was in for a treat. I just got a plain butter croissant. Best croissant I've ever had. And the interior is bigger and brighter than you might expect, a perfect place to sit for a bit and escape the cold. LOVE LOVE LOVE! Don't hesitate about going here! Everything was great! Some of the better croissants I've had. Perfectly crisp on the outside, perfectly buttery, wonderful flavor from all the flavors I tried! I loved their cakes too, the bette noir (flourless chocolate cake) and an almond cake with raspberry filling. Their chapeaus are croissant dough cut up and put together, sorta like a lil monkey bread with a jammy flavor throughout. The service was lovely too. I moved from Vermont a few months ago and have lived in two places since--one a giant metropolis, the other a mid-sized city. I've tried several almond croissants, and every time I bite into one, I wish I could get my money back because they are NOT as good as Bohemian's. Bohemian's almond croissant lives in my mind rent-free, creeping into my brain every time I order a pastry. Literally, it may have ruined other pastries for me. I'm not kidding. I've literally stopped ordering pastries elsewhere because I know they won't be as good. This may be the best almond croissant in the United States. You MUST go here! This place is mixed bag. Pros and cons: Pros: -- Gluten-free buckwheat hazelnut cake/bread and also gluten-free cornbread. Both are celiac safe (I can tell from experience) and not too sweet. A reasonable price for what they are. -- Excellent espresso Cons: -- Hard to get a seat -- Often long lines -- Limited hours, and closed two days a week. -- Staff sometimes unfriendly or even surly -- You have to ask them to NOT use the same serving device on the GF cakes as they do on gluteny cakes. -- You have to be careful when you make the above request, because if they know you have an allergy, they will try to seriously dissuade you from eating anything there. It is really bizarre. Same conversation every time I go in: I eat your GF cakes regularly, never had a problem, they are delicious, please just use a clean serving device. It's tiresome. read more

Easily the worst coffee and bakery in Montpelier, probably Vermont. The owner/manager is as non-customer service oriented as they come. I've been treated with disdain on more than one occasion and seemingly the employees operate in fear. Equally poor is their very hard pastries and their coffee which is often not hot. This is a busy place and pastries sold out quickly. I would own a shop like this but not a place to hang for a while. The window seats are nice though to people watch. The price is reasonable actually for the town and locals running into local is very common. I tried my croissant and it's not very crispy as I wanted. I would want it freakier. Coffee is very good though. If you want an afternoon pick me up, definitely go for one. Ambiance isn't my vibe but for a quick stop yes. It's a good place for parents with their ikea like decorating. I am not local to Montpelier (or even the East Coast) but this bakery makes me wish I was. I am not exaggerating when I say that their thyme and gruyere danish changed my life. I also had the pleasure of chatting with the owner, learning more about what makes their danishes special, and taking a peek into their kitchen; I was impressed by the baking operation as much as the owner's story. The quality of the coffee was also noteworthy. I can't remember who they source their beans from but it was delicious either way. Such a cute space in such a beautiful town! Popping in for lunch, however, I was disappointed to find very meager savory offerings. That said, their egg salad on focaccia was incredibly tasty and hit the spot. The maple latte was decent. Not the best I've had, but they nailed the requisite toasted marshmallow taste that I love about this singular Vermont cafe specialty. The decor seems a bit sterile. The aesthetic feels Scandinavian inspired with understated tones and minimal accoutrements, and could use some warming elements to make it feel less like a canteen and more like a cozy nest. read more

Maybe the owner isn't local or doesn't really care about being local? The owner (? shoulder length straight brown hair) is incredibly aloof and borderline rude and clearly has customer 'favorites' that she will make an effort to smile and talk to. If you're not one of them...don't plan on getting a smile a nod or good service. It's like you are bothering her to come to her bakery. I'm not local, but I am from VT. The husband (guessing here, but he looks like the head baker and was talking to the wife) seems to be much more pleasant in watching him interact with staff. The staff is pretty friendly but clearly ruled with an iron fist as I watched an interaction between owner and a couple of staff members and they appeared to not really love their job, but liked making coffee and interacting with customers. Pastries are pretty good but ran out of a lot of things early in the morning and not prices listed so you have to ask over and over if you are trying to budget or not spend $7 for a croissant. Coffee is ok, they use real maple syrup in the latte which would be expected for the Capital of the maple state. If you have a chance to go? Skip it and head to Capital Grounds down the street or Birchgrove on Elm Street where the vibe is much more welcoming, the crew is friendly and want you to be there to enjoy your coffee! read more

If you can stomach mediocre coffee and the incredibly rude staff, the pastries are good.

Sometimes it's the best cappuccino in town (this isn't saying much) and sometimes, like today, it's a cup of vaguely coffee flavored hot milk. I'd say it's 50/50 in terms of getting a decent coffee - you just never know. I think I'm at the point where I'm tired of tossing my drinks half the time I go there. I've been looking forward to trying this place, as I'm fan of good pastries and coffee. My first experience here was highly disappointing. The staff was incredibly rude, to the point where I was actually speechless. First, the woman who took my order chastised me for asking if I could have some whole milk in my Americano, and then she interrupted my pregnant wife in an angry manner halfway through her order for no apparent reason. The kicker: I overheard the folks behind the counter complaining in a loud voice about "tourist season" and how they can't wait for it to end. I was born and raised in Central Vermont, and am definitely not a tourist... but many of my friends and loved ones are; they are wonderful people who sometimes bring their hard-earned dollars to spend in VT in the summer. The comment was particularly troubling because my wife is a person-of-color. Assuming she is a tourist (presumably because she doesn't "look" local) is a pretty blatant micro-aggression. No wonder Central Vermont has remained so white over the years. The only thing that felt touristic in this experience to me was the rude and negative energy emanating from this establishment. I'm normally happy to overlook sub-par service in Montpelier as long as folks remain polite and civil (which 99% of them do). This woman was incredibly nasty. This doesn't bode well for our economy in a state that depends on tourism. I hope this place doesn't last with its toxic front-of-house energy. I have to say it: I miss the Coffee Corner. read more

This is as good as the New Vermont gets. Bohemian is a beautiful little bakery serving truly extraordinary pastries (both sweet and savoury) and exceptional espresso drinks (they roast their own beans in-house) situated on a quiet country road (East Hill Road) in a quaint little village (East Calais), and, if that wasn't enough, they offer their idyllic grounds and a nicely appointed room in their house (!) for you to enjoy your delicacies. As noted earlier, their bakery is only open on Sundays, from 10 am to 2 pm, but their excellent wood-fired sourdough bread is available in local co-ops (including Hunger Mountain Co-op in Montpelier and Buffalo Mountain in Hardwick) and at the East Calais General Store on Thursdays, and their phenomenal coffee beans are distributed to co-ops as far away as South Burlington (Healthy Living stocks them) on Saturdays. Highlights include: among the very best croissants in North America (no joke!); absolutely killer, unbelievably buttery kouign amann; wonderful apricot tarts; perfect Danishes; simple but excellent sandwiches; and incredibly light and delicious quiches. read more

This little bakery on an idyllic Vermont country road serves some of the most delicious desserts, sandwiches, and quality artisan coffee. Among my favorites include the croissant, quite possibly the best in VT and the East Coast for that matter, carrot cake and their other cakes. Their prices are quite modest for the quality of food and the atmosphere which could only have come out of a story book. This is what you would picture Vermont to be.
