This is our neighborhood DQ and we love it. The staff are friendly and efficient, even when there's a long line of people waiting. Walk-up only, no drive thru. Small parking lot but a lot of people walk from the surrounding neighborhood. Great summertime vibes and good ice cream! Rain or shine, summer or winter, this DQ is always packed. This location is walk-up window only, so waiting outside when the weather isn't great isn't ideal, but it's still worth it in my opinion. They have a huge menu and always have limited-time flavors available. The staff is helpful, friendly, and even if it's super busy, they always get orders out fast. My go-to's are the banana split, a cookie dough blizzard, or a twist in a cone. The parking lot is small, so if it's super busy, we've parked at the Taco Bell next door and just walked over to the Dairy Queen. Not sure if that's allowed, but it works in a pinch! read more

I'm spending the day with my son for Mother's Day and he mentions that he wants to treat me to DQ. He's only 14 might I add but he's the sweetest kid. Anywho, we decide to go to the location in Ferndale since it was the closest to where we were. The location is great. It sits off the main road and is very easy to spot. The parking lot is quite small though. Considering how nice it was outside, we weren't the only ones wanting to grab some ice cream. It took us about 2-4min before we were able to park. We walk up and are able to place our order within 2mins of our arrival. Good stuff, but then of course the waiting begins. It's a pretty long line of people waiting for their orders to come up. After about 10/15min our number is called and we grab our afternoon treat. My son loves his blizzard. He raved about how good it was in comparison to what I had. And I must admit, I should've gotten the same thing. My sundae just wasn't a sundae. It at best was okay. Maybe it's just me but it didn't taste the way it used to..... sidebar, I've lived out of state for the past three years and recently moved back.... So maybe that has something to do with it. However, I give this DQ a 4 star rating because for the amount of ppl that was waiting, it didn't take too long in my opinion to get our food. The parking lot was fairly small and my ice cream wasn't as good as I would've liked but my sons was amazing. Absolutely delicious. I just know to grab a blizzard next time. read more

Employees were nice and service was fine but the end product was just not there. I had a large cotton candy blizzard that might as well have been a vanilla one with cotton candy crunchies sprinkled on top and I also ordered a small brownie blizzard with extra brownie bits but I guess they made a whole extra one on accident instead. I just suggest getting basic things here otherwise just go a few minutes down the road to the other location. read more

I was simply not impressed by this Dairy Queen. Mind you it's been a long time since I've been to one, but this one left me with a ton of questions. When you walk up to the window you are bombarded with a multitude of signs. The specials that they offer are written on them somewhere, but they are hard to discern amongst all the other ones. The staff in no way tells you what they happened to be. The service was fast, but we weren't offered any napkins on one of the hottest days of the year. The ice cream was just what you would expect from Dairy Queen, creamy and delicious. They did have a very nice area with benches, surrounded by lovely plantings. Another perk was the free on-site parking. The price however was absolutely ridiculous. We paid almost $6 for two kids size cones that were dipped. Even though Dairy Queen was a childhood favorite, I think I'll pass this time. read more

They either need to upgrade their registers or lose their rights to be a Dairy Queen. We happily pay their ridiculous prices (3.38 for an extra small blizzard) but when we are given a treat through their email club or new app they don't have the registers to reward us. That is BS. read more

A blink and miss it freestanding shop, this Dairy Queen nevertheless gets more traffic after 9PM than anywhere else on Nine Mile except maybe Providence Hospital. Show up just past dusk in the summer to see Ferndalers rubbing shoulders with Oak Parkians and Pleasant Ridgers, the odd Hazel Parkese and a Royal Oakite. Truly, this is simple and appealing ice cream for the masses. Just a hint: -walk here-. Park if you must at the CVS lot or Ferndale Foods. Delve down a side street to explore the community, but for the love of your bumper and all things shiny, avoid the popping parking lot at all costs. Nitwits rarely bother to check their rearview before pulling out and teenagers stroll between the lines behind your bumper without a care or thought for the red tail lights. The exit onto the side street (Dover, I think) is one-way and making a left can be extra tricky. That said, the community oriented policies are great. Teens whip up Blizzards, banana splits, and whatever else your sweet tooth desires. Soft serve is the name of the game, and toppings are $.39 extra on most items, but diverse. They have more combinations of fruit, topping, and treat than anyone can imagine, and I know some Ferndale teen has a goal to eat his or her way through the whole menu over a summer. I think it's a laudable goal, do it while you have the metabolism. That said, a basic vanilla cone hits the spot on a humid day when you're fighting off bronchitis, as I was this past week. Guh. Daily specials bring some deep discounts. $1.39 cones or get an Arctic Freeze for another $.99 with purchase of a Blizzard, mini-size Blizzards and more keep this light on the wallet. Maybe not your waistline, but hence the walk, burning some calories and meeting people. Nothing is more fun than bringing out the dog because sprinkles + happy kids + wiggly puppers = WIN! This Dairy Queen sets the bar for a tiny spot catering to the community. Gorgeous polished wood adironack chairs allow a spot to sit. Music serenades you all night long. Red mulched beds with barrels of flowers give more cheer and colour than many businesses on the south side of Nine Mile, more's the pity because they could brighten up the area and pull in a lot of traffic. read more

When I moved to Ferndale, I was very worried having a Dairy Queen so close to my house. I envisioned driving there every night for a 1 or 2 blizzards, and resembling a dairy cow. Sure enough, I came here quite frequently in those early days. But, I walked. So, it was somewhere near calorie neutral (I told myself). Anyhow, they make good blizzards, and it is nice knowing that my solution to any bad day is only a short drive/walk away. read more

This was not the "go-to" DQ for my husband and I for a while. We found it was difficult to park, SO close to the street, and generally full of loud music blasting from patrons' cars. After deciding to divorce the Hazel Park DQ, we've returned to the open arms of this one. Despite the parking and proximity to the street - this DQ is far superior. They're fast, friendly, have lots of comfortable seating and play great, old school soul on the speakers. They also have lots of signage to help advertise the blizzard flavors, which are ever-evolving. read more

I gave two stars because I grew up I dairy queen and today was my last day going I am disappointed to say hubby and I stopped there for a treat, I got my usual butterfinger blizzard and hubby got a summer berry cheesecake blizzard that wasn't properly mixed and to top that off he found hair in his bluzzard! For all the years I've been going to dairy queen I never experienced this before nor will I ever again because that was my last time going.....dairy queen please make your employees wear hair nets before this happens again. read more

The Dairy Queen on 9 mile had gone completely downhill. Waited in line for 30 minute sand employee was gabbing outside in the parking lot. No bananas or pineapple for banana split. Then ordered hot fudge sundae and specially asked for whip cream.It had none nor did it have nuts or a top on it . I asked them to finish making it by adding whip cream, nuts and a top so it wouldnt spill. The manager said they would have to charge me.... I said go ahead. They took forever while ice cream melted. why review a dairy queen? one of many that are exactly the same. because the dairy queen is in the perfect location in dowtown ferndale. there is nothing better than taking a walk and having dairy queen as the possible halfway point. i may be a food snob, but i've been in love since childhood with dairy queen vanilla soft serve. nothing beats a large cone with sprinkles. i am never ashamed of ordering the childish topping, even in my thirties. this dairy queen also has daily specials and regularly gives out 75 cent off wooden tokens that i use as a bargaining tool with the bf to get a chance to take another walk to the dairy queen. love, juston read more

I am sad to say that last night was one of the saddest displays of customer service that I've experienced. After patiently waiting for three people to order from Andrea and subsequently receive their order. We continued to wait. A group returned from getting their order filled, asked for bags, dog cones and the funnel cake to be placed in a separate bag. And we still had not event been greeted. While a line steadily grew my friend and I were compleatly ignored and after I ultimately approached the window to ask why we had not been waited on I was met with a blank stare from Andrea who said I thought you already ordered. I replied "if we had why would we still be standing in the order line?" I was met with a blank stare. Still no inquiry into what we may want. I know everyone expectation of service is different but the lack of service all together should be a deal breaker for everyone. If you want or need Ice cream there are a multitude of other options in the area that outshine this Dairy Queen. read more

I have been going to this location for years and have always had good service but when I received my Banana Split blizzard today it was the consistency of a shake. A very small sign in the window states blizzards are not served upside down. Guessing this means that you get what you get. read more

This used to be a great place for ice cream in Ferndale. HOWEVER, after what happened tonight I don't think I'll go back until after all the construction at that area of 9 mile is complete, if at all. This is why.. When my husband drove into the lot it looked full, little did we know the only other exit had been closed off so there is only 1 way in or out-off of 9 mile. Three or four cars pulled in behind us there were no spots to park, we couldn't back up-no room. No one directed traffic and no one was leaving. It was HORRIBLE. We were trapped in the lot where about 14 people were sitting in the chairs some not even eating or done eating. When I went to make our order, the girls working were very nice, but we did hear the owner wouldn't even close the shop for 2 days so that the cement at the exit would be able to dry. My only thought was how THOUGHTLESS AND GREEDY. I can appreciate a business owner wanting to make a great profit, however, he could have easily had an additional employee to monitor traffic going into the parking lot, (to stop them if the parking lot was too crowded for a 10 minutes or so), put a sign up stating no other exit or even shut off the sitting area for a few days until the exit was completed. Instead one of his employees has her car hit (just a fender-bender) and some patrons almost get into a car accident due to other patrons continuing to drive into the lot when there is no room and no one directing them to wait. I am sincerely disappointed that the owner did nothing to avoid this even having someone direct traffic would have shown a little concern for the customers. The owner should be ashamed of themselves for the lack of concern for the customers (you know the people who provide the profit). read more
