Best store EVER! It's like Target to me - everytime I go there, I always come out buying something. They have a whole bunch of cute stuff for mostly $1.50. I know it's $0.50 more but it sure beats the dollar store in my books!! I buy all my school supplies there! You could find everything and more. There's this pen I have that alot of my classmates are amazed with. It's one of those 4-in-1 pens that only has ONE clicker (hard to describe)...its like magic. There's also alot of things I use to make cards for people (like the plastic cover cases). They have cool gift bags and boxes. Basically, they have a whole bunch of COOL COOL COOL. If you ever want to order a bulk of something, just ask them and they'll order it for you! read more

Like teenyboppers going stir crazy, a gang of us spent a fun-filled day in Daly City. In between movie and dinner, we skipped, hopped & jumped to check out Daiso, the Japanese dollar fitty store. The store is massive for one of its kind and filled with just-a-step-above cheap gadgetry stuff. I think it helps to go in knowing what you're looking for. Otherwise, you just spend time wandering the aisles and asking yourself, do I need this? for every item you encounter (usually, you can convince yourself by saying IT'S ONLY $1.50!). Things in the store are also arranged in a hodge podge. You have to stand in front of a shelf and look to find something you recognize in order to figure out what the other things around it might be. It doesn't help that the packaging is in Japanese, so non-Japanese readers are outta luck. Still, most to of the stuff was either cutesy, small, or in in bubble gum bright pinks, greens, and blues. This store has some cool stuff here and there for a relatively cheap price. I always thought it was fun to come here and browse around and run into something that I might buy . So, one day I went there with my friend and we had a cart because we were going to look for the garbage cans. We were still browsing around and inside the cart there was only a item in there. As we were about to reach the aisle with the trash cans the manager shows up and gets upset that we were using a cart with only a small item in there and said we don't need the cart and gave us a basket. On top of that she told me to zip up my bag because she was afraid that I was going to steaL from the store. That was really rude and insulting of the manager. 500 different kinds of hangers? check. 200 shapes of sponges from animals to fruit? got it. A million imported items and knick-knacks from Japan with badly (and sometimes funny) "Engrish" translations, with most items priced at $1.50? Welcome to Daiso in Daly City! My sister and I decided to wander into this store to peruse their various sundries. I seriously was not prepared for this adventure. I decided to wander the aisles systematically so I can make sure to view everything at least once and not wander around in circles. I began at the "miscellaneous" section to the left of the entrance, with each of the items provoking an "ohh" and "ahh" reaction. That quickly ended by aisle 10, and by aisle 50 my brain felt fried from information and sensation overload. The cooking aisle tickled my fancy, especially since I've starting baking more often and found cool-shaped, cheap, cookie cutters - like a foot shaped cutter! Two hours later, I found myself in front of an entire wall of hangers, then sponges. It's like a museum: so much cool stuff, but by the end, your brain needs a nap. Imagine going into a Target and not being familiar with any of the brands, not understanding the Japanese packaging, and in some cases still not understanding the "translated" packaging. This can also be the fun part of going on this adventure. It's almost like Target married the Asian dollar store and they had a baby, a really big baby. After my first few visits, I had a theory that you can find almost anything there (within reason of course). I tested this theory on a common item, a standard book light, or just a light you can clip on a book to read in dark places. Result: No booklights, but they have a plethora of miniature flashlights? I was shocked! I will definitely be back in the future to see if they have some random thing I need, but don't want to pay a ton for. I've been back to Daiso a handful of times and I've learned a couple of lessons: - Bring someone that you can have fun with and enjoy looking at the million items and the hundred different kinds of that one item. - If you plan to stay long and you're alone, bring an I-Pod or music player because the combination of absent muzak and the dim florescent lighting can be numbing. - Don't walk around with a cart or basket, unless you're planning on buying 50 things when all you wanted were cookie cutters. - Don't expect the clerk to bag all your finds. The new location is more spacious than the previous store near the 76 gas station. Very clean and bright. The line is usually pretty long but moves very fast. As far as inventory, certainly more stuff but that should be expected since they did move to a larger location. The only issue is parking. Sharing the same lot with Dave and Buster can make finding parking stressful. We usually park on the Target side, then it's just a short walk though the mall, 2 side entrances. read more

there is nothing like the satisfaction of buying and hoarding tons of cheap crap for your house after maxing out three credit cards for the sake of "owning" a certain designer satchel-- everything from tempura blotting paper to pet leashes, random ass bathroom signs, foam floor puzzles with a hardwood faux finish, plastic storage of all shapes and sizes, dishes and soup spoons, donburi sets and kamameshi pots, candy and umbrellas, stationery with "sunney days" (yes, 'sunny' with an 'e') on it... all of a sudden, you need these things. in bulk. to keep from throwing up thinking about how much money you really spent on one crazy expensive bag. randomness is really charming. for some reason, daiso makes you feel like somehow you got your money's worth and that everything's gonna be okay. read more

One thing I miss about living in Daly City is my easy access to Daiso... This store is my little playground... I can usually spend an hour here touching every thing in sight... It is so difficult to walk away and not buy something... i'm the type of person who walks into target intending to buy only 1 item and walks out with a shopping cart full of unintentional (but of course necessary) purchases. hello good buy! so now venturing to serramonte mall with the intention of purchasing only 1 item now means leaving with a trunk load of spur of the moment purchases, thanks to the daiso across the way from target. yes, it's a stand-alone building, but once i enter the parking lot coming from gellert, i'm torn - do i turn left and visit target or turn right and visit daiso? hit up both and it's a win-win sitch. daiso carries everything you never knew you needed and now that you've found it you wonder how you ever existed w/o it. and daiso makes it easy for you to discover these items, considering how neat and organized the store is (compared to other dollar stores). all for $1.50 (unless otherwise marked). think target's $ section expanding into one ginormous store (and not just the cheapie crap either). recent purchases have included stationery, pens, tin pails (for centerpiece arrangements for a baby shower), wrapping paper, gift bags, teapots, cupcake holders, kitchen utensils, stickers, beads, plastic organizing bins...sake bottles, chopsticks & other kitchenware/food items are cheaper than you'd find in china/japantown (!) but what's the deal w/ sake bottles but no matching cups?! we gave sake gift baskets last christmas and i was soooo irritated that i couldn't buy everything here! but really, i'll only knock down .5 star for that so the rating should be 4.5 stars. thank goodness i can put the seats down in my minivan and expand the trunk space THAT much more to carry all my unintentional but oh so necessary purchases. read more

Summary: This is the place to find inexpensive kids party favors, thank you gifts, cooking/serving/food storage paraphenalia, and plastic boxes. Most everything in here costs $1.50, which is good and bad. Some things are not worth $1.50. For example, my red bento box (with cute bunnies printed on it) was $1.50 and the matching elastic band alone was $1.50. Most of the teapots are $1.50, but if you want a tea leaf strainer, it'll cost another $1.50. See? At the cashier register, you have to bag and wrap your own goods but you're given the supplies. Plenty of parking, close to 280 freeway exit. Neighbors with Target Greatland if you have energy to shop some more. Although there is a lot of stuff, I found there was plenty of room in aisles and walkways to maneuver. I think people in wheelchairs would be ok to move around in there. Details: This is the place...to find inexpensive and sometimes unusual kids party favors or small thank you gifts. For example, you'll find kids art supplies, crafts, toys, and play tents. For thank you gifts, there are baskets, picture frames, cute chopsticks and bowls, gardening stuff. There's a nice variety of pretty gift wrap, gift bags and greeting cards - these would cost you double elsewhere. This is the place...to find bargain-priced cooking tools and gadgets, utensils and food storage. There is a large selection and seemingly decent quality. I went looking for lunch boxes. They have a large variety of chopsticks in different lengths, colors and patterns, plus matching chopstick cases. The bento box selection was not varied enough for me, but what was there was uber cute. They also sell a variety of thermal lunch bags and water bottle holders. As others have said before, there is a dazzling array of general plastic food storage containers and specific for any kind of food you have - tofu, sandwiches, rice. Again, you have to be careful about the pricing. You could probably buy a set of 18 food storage plastic thingies cheaper at Target for $10. Other... Do you like knitting? You'll find an assortment of bamboo knitting needles and crochet hooks here. If I had a pet, I could get it a pet bed and toys here. Personal disappointments: Lack of variety in stationery items. If you're fond of Japanese cute notebooks, stationery and envelopes you can find much more variety at Maido. (Edited 8/8/07: Yes, they actually do have a lot of stationery packs, paper, erasers, notebooks. Just not enough kawaii ones for me!!!) Lack of variety in cell phone charms. Surely they can find a ton of these to sell for $1.50? The lunch boxes were marked labelled not dishwasher safe. Whah? Teapots were ugly. Some stuff in the plastics room is on too high shelves, or hanging too high on the walls to reach. My haul: 2 red bento boxes and bands, airtight glass jar with a British flag, cute tomatoes greeting card, gift wrap, plastic anti-splatter plate cover for use in microwave, 2 airtight seal plastic containers, tea leaf strainer, cute animals erasers, cute animal stationery pack, cute animal notes cube. ~$22.00. read more

Wow. I stumbled on this while circling around the streets of Daly City, trying to make sense of the nightmare Hwy 1/ Hwy 280 merge mess. It seems everyone in the world has already reviewed this place but with me being a closet suburbanite I was totally blown away! (We don't have these in Walnut Creek). It looks like a Japanese Target or Dollar Store or actually a Dollar-Fifty Store: shelves of stuff say "Everything on this shelf $1.50" or "Unmarked items are usually $1.50". The quality is better than a Dollar Store and it's more fun because it's full of crazy Japanese inventions. I liked the extensive lunch box section--the biggest selection I've seen anywhere. I was also amazed by the extensive baking supply aisle-- lots of tiny cake pans, tiny tart pans, tiny muffin cups, tiny pie pans, everything so tiny the way Japanese like everything miniaturized. I only wish that with all of the lunch boxes and storage containers that they offerred more glass or enamel and less plastic. read more

I. Love. Daiso. I love all Japanese home goods is what it really comes down to. But seriously, the first time I came into this store, I probably spent 30 minutes in their kitchen section alone. They've got nearly everything( except a musubi maker... very surprising). But they've got like molds to make your rice heart shaped. they've got the fake grass to separate your sushi from your wasabi. They have little to go lunch boxes, and a wall of kitchen doodads you think you absolutely need. The kid section is awesome and full of goofy costumes, masks, toys. I got a slappy hand thing and giant bow tie for my upcoming adventure to Black Rock City. And if you're looking for small to medium size containers, Daiso's got it all. The best thing is that most items are like $1.50. So you can buy a boatload of crap and not break the bank. Then you go to Target, you know one of the 2 RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER, and feel sad because things aren't as cheap as Daiso and you feel like everyone took their kids here on a field trip that day. I just learned there is a Daiso in Japantown. I think I might go there right now just for the sheer fun of it. And then I can also stop into Ichi Ban Kan. wooo read more

Sorry, but I'm gonna deduct 2 stars for selling hazardous items. I was quite shocked to find Daiso is selling cookware and dinnerware known to contain lead (they even have the signs posted to warn customers of this). Fortunately I've never purchased anything there for the purpose of consuming food and will obviously continue that practice. read more

one important comment. it's soooooooooooooooo big. twss... on the real though, i've been to daiso in japan and this place could compare. it's so large that it stands on it's own apart from the target, jc penny and whatever else is in the same mall area. also, once you go inside there are different sections depending on what kind of item you're looking for. i went dorm shopping and bought a variety of things for under 30 dollars. some things i bought: -ceramic plate and bowl -plastic bowl in the shape of a strawberry :) -glass bowl and cup -laundry hanging stuff (clothes pins, etc) -containers for jewelry, pens/paper, etc MOST things are $1.50, some things are more expensive. what made me angry was that some items that are originally sold for 100yen in japan are being sold for $2.00 or $3.00 just to make a profit. i mean i know the yen is strong but really... ? i've seen the same false eyelashes (the items in question) sold at the san francisco daiso for $1.50. read more

I couldn't believe that I had been missing out on this place for the past 4 years that I've been living in San Francisco! Originally I had thought this place just sold makeup (don't ask why). When I needed to buy some toiletries, my roommates suggested coming here. I was a little hesitant because it was not attached to Serramonte mall and was by itself along 280 lol. But again, I WAS WRONG! Daiso is AMAZING! I could be in this store for hours! I was actually there for several hours during my first visit because I wanted to check every single department. They have huge signs in English over each area so you won't get lost. Even though their products are in Japanese, you pretty much have an idea of what it is. And the best thing of all, almost everything is $1.50 or less! From dog leashes to stationary to even tissue rolls, they have almost everything here! If you don't find what you're looking for at Target or Walmart, they will most likely have it at Daiso! read more

I love rummaging in dollar stores! Daiso is a $1.50 store (although there are a few items that are more, but those are marked) that just opened on Saturday. I dropped by yesterday and it was sooo crowded. This place has everything! I was a bit overwhelmed and will probably have to go back to see what I missed. I ended up leaving with only a little horn that I plan to install on my 3yo nephew's Hot Wheels Jeep Wrangler. He's been very sad that he can't honk at people to get out of his way and I had been promising to get him a bell or horn for his car. read more

Daiso is definitely bringin sexy back, to dollar-ish stores. I love this place. It has everything I need and everything I didnt even know I needed. It's got Japanesque toys, stationary, kitchenware, storage gears, household accessories galore. And most things are $1.50 each. It's larger than Ichiban-Kan (sf) and Lychee Tree (cupertino) combined. The selection and variety of products is greater at Daiso than the other asian dollar-ish stores. It's nice, clean, well organized and the staff are helpful. read more

This place is kept clean and the staff are instructed to respond in short sentences so don't think they're trying to be rude or anything. They're wiling to help and can always lead you to the item you're asking about. The store policy is that there's no exchange/returns, it's not that the cashiers don't want to help. They're basically powerless. Also there are other rules posted on the cash register itself, make sure you read them before going off on the people that work there. It might be a crappy sign but it's pretty clear and straight to the point. If you take your time to go row by row you can easily spend 2 hours there. I always found new stuff when I went and they have signs near the ceiling to help the customers. No plastic bags so either buy a large basket or bring your own bags. Their snack selection is great and they have a lot of drinks. Double check the expiration date because sometimes it will be past the printed date but they'll have it on sale. read more

Went in to the school price was marked $1.50, went to counter and rung up at $2.00. They refused to respect the price marked. On principal I waited for the manager, then they called corporate office - still wouldn't refund the .50 cents. Seriously are they that hard up for .50. They also won't let you use the restroom - pray for yourself if you have a child. Next time I'll let her pee on the floor. So not a fan - I'll never go back. I've only been here three times, it might be a lot to some of you but let me continue on with my story. The first two times I've been here I found a lot of cute stuff that i wanted (but didnt need) but then i would suddenly need to pee really bad!! I head straight for the lines but they are too long, so i just drop everything and leave. That happened twice... finally my third time i didnt have to pee (I didn't get starbucks). I had a lot of stuff at first but then i came to my senses and put most of the stuff back.. what am i supposed to do with little business cards that have cute animals on them?? I'm obsessed with this store. I always come in every 2 weeks just to look at random shenanigans. The fact that most of their items are only $1.50 is a winner in my wallet! Even their kitchenware is only $1.50! They have a huge parking lot so you never have to fight for parking at all. The only thing I would say is they can definitely improve on their customer service. The cashiers are robots to me. Just "hi", "thank you", "next customer please". But that's not a huge factor because at least the cheap items make up for it :) read more

if anyone's ever wondered if their bakeware is good, they work like BUTTER! it's just that you have to line the bottoms with parchment and spray liberally with pam. but hell, i do that anyway. i've had so many cool finds here. the other day, i picked up cutouts to lay on a cake, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and instantly say "happy birthday" on my cake with a cute little bear. are you filipino and looking for the perfect puto tin to fit into your steamer? look no further! just line with cupcake papers and you're good to go. they even have little animals imprinted in the metal in case you're ni the mood for cute jello! they've got everything to make your homemade dessert look extra special! i even got cake boxes here! i stock up and save them cuz every often they're sold out! i use them to bring cakes in and when ever i make a cake for the bf and need a transport vessel. love, love, LOVE daiso! read more

i LOVEEE daiso! they have such cute stuff and everything is usually around $2 or so. they have alot of cute housewares that is pretty good quality and i love their selection of organizers, jars, and boxes. i usually end up with a basket full of cheap stuff that i do not really need, but don't care because everything adds up to under $20. read more

But I also don't know how other stores like Target can compete when the stuff at Daiso is so awesome.
