Being the nerd that I am, I heard about Daiso by watching YouTube haul videos- told you, super nerdy lol. I knew they were only located in California (I think there is one in Texas as well), besides Japan and I HAD to check it out, during my trip to San Diego. This location was about 20 minutes from Ocean beach without traffic. It was located in a shopping center that also had H-mart (an Asian supermarket) and an In and Out as well. So why is Daiso amazing, you ask? Mostly everything in the store is $1.50! It's basically an Asian dollar tree, with a TON of really adorable items. I ended up spending a little over $60 here.. I was a little excited, haha. I bought rainbow kitchen sponges, small magic erasers, a duster that looked like a hedgehog, gorgeous small bowls for the kitchen, chopsticks, window decals, a hand mask and my favorite thing to purchase- snacks! They had a huge selection of Asian snacks. Pocky, pizza flavored pretzels, wasabi peas and condiments such as chili sauce to name a few. I even found green tea flavored cookies. The one thing about Daiso that is kind of ridiculous is that everything is final sale. That is why one star has been deducted- every store should accept refunds, even if it was only for a short time period after purchasing. I love this place! This is the place to express how American I can be - buying crap that I don't need, and this place definitely fulfills my shopper's urge that doesn't come with much of a price tag, cos it's a Japanese dollar store, but it's one that sells quality goods (mostly, a lot of them are made in Japan too). Every time I come here I spent at least 30 dollars with two bags of crap. Oh to be more accurate, it's $1.50 per item unless stated otherwise. The other comparable store is the Marukai dollar market. You can find many unique items here for yourself and as gifts, including skin and hair care products, kitchen gadgets, cookware, dinnerware, household items, natural health remedies, cleaning products, arts and crafts, stationery, auto accessories, or some miscellaneous stuff that will surprise you like a bucket with massage bumps at the bottom for soaking your feet... They don't have a lot of choices of each category, but it holds enough stuff that can completely dress you, decorate your car and your house; they don't sell cars or houses so you have to own it first. I bought hair accessories for myself, many small packs of animal erasers for the kids in Peru, a little glass sauce dispenser and some extra large S hooks that are hard to find elsewhere but are extremely useful! I literally gave out a little shriek of excitement when I found a cheap pack of extra large S hooks for my reusable shopping bags so I am ready to buy more crap! I like even though the store is not huge they still form a single line for the multiple cash registers, which I think is the best queuing system as I always have bad luck picking the slowest line among all. The staff were very efficient; some of them were friendly and greeted customers, some just went straight for your basket. But they sell stuff I like for a cheap price so they are still getting 5 stars! read more

I love Daiso in Japan because everything in the store is 100 yen (+/- $1 USD). Unfortunately in America, Daiso items are at least $1.50, and I say at least because prices can go up to $3-$4 depending on what item you are looking at. Still, this Daiso isn't bad. My roommate and I found tons of stuff we could use for our apartment. I got a few weave pull-out baskets for my bathroom and a soap dish for under $10. There's some random knick knacks as well, and even though some things are more than the standard $1.50, it's still fairly cheap compared to getting the same thing at say, Walmart or Target. It's really crowded, though, and the aisles are very narrow. The line to the cashiers can get super long but they're pretty efficient and so it goes pretty quickly. BTW, make sure that you have plenty of hands to help you with your items (if you're buying a lot of stuff) because you're not allowed to take the carts out of the store. Minus TWO STAR for customer service! After finishing our purchase my boyfriend gives me the reciept. I usually do not check it but for some reason it seemed really expensive for the amount of things we got. I checked and realized our cashier, CAYLiN, had double charged us for one of the items that cost $6. We went back inside and she takes a glance at us, turns away and continues to help the person checking out. After she finished she still didn't acknowledge us.. she called for the next person. So I had walked up to her and told her she charged us twice while handing her the receipt. She completely says nothing and just says asked us for our credit card and did not apologize at all. To me it seem like she was not surprised. She just hands us back the receipt and my boyfriend even said thank you and she didn't say anything.. seems kind of off to me. read more

$1.50 for almost everything, this is definitely a place you can spend money for stuff you don't need and end up costing you $50 to $100 dollars by time you walk out. Kawaii!! This store is so incredibly bright and colorful I'm surprised that it didn't give me a seizure when I walked in. The most basic way to describe this place is that it's a Japanese 'dollar store' that somehow feels a lot more fun than your standard dollar store. Most of the items are only $1.50. You should be certain you want something before you buy it because there are no refunds. There is a wide variety of items for sale. You can be shopping for mundane household items and then a few steps later be laughing at gag gifts and goofy items. If I ever need dog diapers I know where to go now. There were more than a few times I picked up something and said, "What is this??" but it was fun exploring. I ended up with some origami paper, Pocky (yum!), and some travel knick knacks. Everyone is right. Japanese dollar/bargain store with most items at $1.50 but most expensive item I saw was $8. Go first time and you will be amused but that faded quickly for me. I could see myself going there once or twice a year but nothing more. The store has so many random merchandise that it seems like a lot of almost useless items. I'm sure there is a customer base for this stuff and that's why giving 3 stars but I'm not the target market for sure. read more

Daiso Japan looks as if it were plucked from the heart of the island itself and placed right into Mira Mesa. I have never been to what I hear is the larger LA or San Fran location. From the parking lot it appears to be "just another Asian style" store. Don't be fooled.. Once you walk through the front doors you can't help but smile. You are greeted by smiling, enthusiastic employees, bright lights, bright colors, happy Japanese music. My Japanese husband even stated in a surprised tone how it almost felt like he was standing in a local shop. I of course was overwhelmed by ALL of the cute knick-knacks and wondering how I can justify buying them all! Everything in Daiso is $1.50 unless otherwise stated. The most expensive item I found was a doll for $10. The variety of items is nice. You can find socks, ties, scarfs, beauty items, novelty toys, small decor, housewares, party supplies, kitchen and cooking supplies/utensils to include 'special' Japanese dish supplies. All for $1.50! Personally, I would avoid the candies as you can get them cheaper at markets in Kearny Mesa or even a few at the market right next door. If you have some free time, or you're looking for a unique gift, I would suggest stopping in to see what you may find. Just beware, even though items are $1.50, you will still walk out wondering how you just spent $50. read more

This is like the dollar store for awesome Japanese things that you never knew you needed! You'll come in to peruse or to buy something specific, but no matter what, you'll leave with a basket full of cute and/or useful things that will either prove to be the best purchase of your life or an absolute piece of useless junk that will collect dust in a random corner. But at $1.50 an item, you don't mind and it is completely worth the gamble. This is the curios superstore that happens to also sell makeup, food, cooking utensils, cleaning supplies, school and office supplies, clothes, umbrellas, and air freshener. Every few months, they'll get a delay in shipment that tends to be chain-wide and all of the locations will seem pretty darn bare bones in stock, but when they are fully stocked, it sure is a sight to behold. They take debit card with a $5 minimum purchase and there are no exchanges or returns. Also, don't wear a red shirt with black pants or customers will constantly mistake you for an employee! I am in love with Daiso. It's been years since I've lived in Japan but Daiso felt like a little slice of Japan .. a little taste. Living in the East Coast, we have a few international stores here and there but we have nothing like this. I bought something for many of my friends and I was pleasantly surprised at how little I had to pay as well! Needless to say, it's quite affordable here which is great because I made two trips here in one morning. The staff here is quite friendly as well and overall, I just really enjoyed shopping here. omggg I was so excited that a Daiso opened up in Mira Mesa! It took the place of Tuesday Mroning. Went on Sunday during opening weekend and it was half hour before closing time..it was still packed in there. The store was super organized and easy to navigate as they had clear signs as to what you could find in each aisle. Most items were $1.50. If they're not $1.50, they were clearly labeled. I didn't see anything more than $6. They sell things like belts, gardening tools, kitchen items, stationary, snacks, drinks. so much to look at and all imported from Japan!! There's great selection of things. Love it! And so close to home. read more

I love this place! Everything is super cute and the base price is $1.50. If an item is not marked, then it's $1.50. It'll be marked if it's $2 or $3 or more. I personally did not see anything above $3. I left with a haul of things, and all for only $15! What a steal! I'm not sure how good the quality of their items are, but so far so good. Daiso is a little bit of Japan right here in sunny San Diego. The store has everything: snacks, dishes, pet supplies, stationary, toys, household items, the list goes on and on. I stopped by looking for my favorite snack - Pocky and Daiso's delivered in spades with more types then I knew existed. Well organized, very clean, and helpful friendly staff - all of the best ingrediants needed to make a great store. Besides Pocky, the only other item that I was looking for was a musubi maker which of course they had. It is a bit of a drive from North County, but whenever I'm in the area I'll be stopping by. read more

Yeah, I am like the others reviewed. You come in here with one thing you wanna buy, and you get to the cash register and it is over $20 - Oh my! But this is the ultimate place for knick knacks you do not find at another dollar store. Here are a lot of "Who-would-have-thought-of-that" doo dads that make life simple. Lots of assorted containers for purposes you never thought of, organizer knick knacks, enclosed plastic containers for papers, cute binder clips, kitchen supplies. I found a clip that holds back your curtain, which I need for my RV, so I could see out the back when I drive it. I bought several silk orchids for $1.50 each, put one in a small glazed pot that used to contain preserved kumquats, and I am admiring my creation as a great give-away gift, all for $1.50. I got 2 pairs of foam flip flops, the kind you slip on wearing socks (not the thong type) for going outside to your garden, or to use as water shoes. $1.50 each. Everything is $1.50 unless otherwise marked. Daiso also had a hanging basket frame for $1.50, which I bought silk flowers there and elsewhere and made colorful hanging baskets. I notice their colors choices of items throughout the store seem to be aqua and other pastels I do not see in other "American" stores. Are those colors a Japanese thing? I would give Daiso stores 5 stars if things were $1 and you can return or swap like you can at Dollar Tree and 99 Cents only stores. Such a fun place to shop! I'm not much for retail therapy ... I'd rather go out for a walk to de-stress ... but this place is FUN! Last time there I bought a bunch of cold-weather stuff: wool-blend socks, mittens, a neck wrap and something else, spent maybe $6-7. Things I don't need much in San Diego so I'd rather not spend much $ on them. I have always loved dollar stores...as a child i would wander around each isle and admire all the trinkets, snacks, home goods, cleaning products etc..granted items are not going to last forever and yes you paid $1.50 but it does the job and its cute! I must have been in Daiso for over an hour if not more haha loved it! I love japanese goods and they had everything you could think. I originally went for stationary items but im assuming they were out of cute stuff due to back to school season, no worries, i still got pens, highlighters, notebook holder, poki, and random cute useful items! Normally I LOVE LOVE this place, but I bought a hair tie that snapped on my first use. My issue is service: I came back within a day with the item and receipt, and asked to exchange/return it, but they said no, then it took several minutes to get MANAGER approval. For a DEFECTIVE item. THEN the guy exchanged the wrong color and tried saying it was the same (a difference between PINK and WHITE, AND the BARCODE is different). All I asked for was a new one! read more

First time...Have to say most items were junk. You could def. tell how long the items would actually last placed in the real world setting. So I walked out without buying anything. Though I did spend a great deal of time browsing. There were a lot of neat and interesting things. Random household gadgets made of thin plastic....not even sure if there was any BPA in any of it since the words on packaging was in Japanese...as was the makeup and food....kinda sketchy if you don't know what is in the products. There was a sign in english right under the dishes, that stated that there could be lead in the products, just a forewarning. From what I've read this is like a Japanese dollar store. That kinda threw me off, since most items were $1.50 and the other half of items were even more than that like $5,$10,$14....varies for random junk items. And all the dollar store/99 cent stores i've been too, have way better quality products. But, I have to say there was parking, and the store was clean, and there was enough room to walk around. The 2-3 employees that I did see there seemed nice and approachable. And the one product that didn't make any sense to me was the package of silk worm cocoons..that you rub on your face. Errrr... Ok this store isn't bad... But you know me being a fob.. Which means I have seen many many cute adorable things when I lived in Korea and just as cheap as here but better quality.. And been to Japan last month.... Makes me give only 2 stars to this place.. I got super excited when I drove passed by place and finally got a chance to stop by- they do have lots of random stuff and very cheap! Everything is $1.50 unless you see stickers with higher prices on them- so it's basically like Japanese dollar fifty store- Things that are sold here are mostly made in China- i honestly think if things r made in Japan, they have very good quality- no offense to things that are made in China.. But you will notice difference if you are exposed to using both China made goods vs Japan made goods- I did pick up 5 things or so.. Just little random stuff like cute gift wrap bags and hand lotion.. But that's it.. The hand lotion that I got smells good, but it's no moisturizing enough and smell goes away quickly- but hey, u get what u paid for! My mom told me Daiso in irvine is a lot bigger! From trash bags to furniture, kitchen supplies, office supplies, clothes.. My boyfriend & I have a couple restaurants, & we pick up a lot of plates & sauce bowls from Daiso. Even though they're $2.50 each, they're pretty durable! I've banged up the plates a lot, but they haven't broke! No matter how often I go to Daiso, I always find something to buy. I never leave without spending at least $20. That's not a good thing. I admire those that can grab one or two things and be finished shopping here. I know people hate me because I have a cart with 50 items and they have to wait for me to check out whilst they are holding 2 items. Sorry. Why do they have to sell so many cool things that remind me of my days living in Japan and all the ¥100 stores?? It's a blessing and a curse. Recent discovery: Tomato salt hard candy. It's weird. Buy it if you like tomatoes. Give it to people and ask them to guess the flavor. Don't show them the outer package. Daiso is the store where it has everything you didn't know you needed. I go for the mechanical Pencils and Pens but my children needed school supplies and the items you can get here you can't get anywhere else. They have fountain pens, 0.5 lead pencils pocky in the different flavors. Its worth the visit and just walk around and don't make a quick decision. Let it creep into your head to ask yourself do I really need this or will this item make my job easier. I added 17 pictures some things I don't understand at all but I am entering into a culture that I'm not used to. Overall it's a fun store to visit and spend an hour in. read more

Fun, cute store with lots of inexpensive items from Japan. I love shopping Daiso and wish we had one nearer to me. Came here on a trip to San Diego and bought a big back of snacks and small-sized furnitures and other cute toy-props. Staff was very friendly and polite and check-out went smoothly, even though the store is pretty busy. Good variety of items and well stocked shelves. Store is clean and well lit. Parking lot is decent sized and, though it was very busy when I went, I was still able to find parking spaces available. I hope to come again! read more

Missed our turn, Google Maps...went to this Daiso instead of the one in Clairemont...a nice surprise. Parking was hard to find, but yeah....worth it I guess. Hook, Line and Sinker you reeled me in with $1.50 prices! I swear to myself each time that stop into Daiso, that I will not buy more than 10 items. I have to control my spending! I tell myself that this is logical to assume that I will not spend over $15.00 each time that I shop here. Although somehow, a bunch of stuff that I feel is ABSOLUTELY necessary to buy seems to jump into my little white and pink shopping basket. And I spend an average of $25-$30 here! You can find a wide range of stuff here, from makeup, gardening supplies, stationery, cooking gadgets, hair accessories, household goods, decorations, and snacks. Items that I have purchased have included: lace curtains, garden planters, garden tools - in pink and green cute colors, hair accessories, make up, tea cups, wine glasses, soup bowls, gift bags, a sun shade for my car, vases for my bamboo plants, random kitchen gadgets that help me cut my onions, shred my carrots, grate my ginger, glass jars for storage, plastic containers for storage, a floppy straw hat - that I really didn't need but for $1.50 I HAD TO HAVE IT! Well, you get the picture that there is some random neat stuff here and definitely worth me to stop back and check out the revolving selection of goods. To my sweet friend Denise, who introduced me to this store in Santa Monica, Mahaloz sistah for keying me into this place! I am now addicted! I think I spend about an hour here every time I step in to this store and leave with 2-3 bags of goodies. Probably one of my favorite place to shop for some really cute beauty accessories and bento accessories for such low price. They sell cups to ramen bowls, greeting cards that are adorable, Japanese snacks and drinks, pet toys...etc they also have many unique gadgets. You really can't go wrong with this store. I gave a few people stocking stuffers for Christmas and they definitely loved it. Great customer service as they are fast and friendly. Parking is not a hassle. read more

I'm not lying when I say this is the cutest, most useful store I've ever seen. It's super organized and there's so much to see! My best friend and I had to walk slowly through each aisle just to look at everything!! I bought a pump to blow up my pool inflatables, folding organizational storage bins, and a foldable water bottle. As usual with any dollar store place, know what you're getting. Examine your items. Make sure it's worth it. And sturdy. REMEMBER: you are paying for the "cheapness" of most of these items. Quality goes down the drain with stores like these, so just understand and know what you're purchasing. You cannot return anything, so it's important to: 1. Get what you need. 2. Dollar store heaven! Never have I been to a cuter / amazing dollar store! Daiso, a Japanese dollar store, sells everything from facial rollers to pet leashes to ramen bowls to fake eyelashes to candy. The best part is that majority of the items are made in Japan.. Meaning they are better quality than your average dollar store merchandise made in China. Not to mention, all the added cuteness these items have (it is Japan)! They are not necessarily all a $1, many are $1.50. While you may end up spending more than you would have ever thought you would in a dollar store, daiso is worth a look and you'll be amazed to find some useful items you didn't know you needed. There's a lot of stuff in here, I think it's mostly quantity over quality. But there are some very functional items here that would cost you $5 or more, typically. You can save a significant amount of money by shopping for everyday household items here instead of the supermarket or Walmart. You could end up buying a bunch of stuff you don't really need too. So be careful! They have a decent selection of Japanese food items too, and from what my lady says some real good, inexpensive beauty/bath products as well. read more
