First, let me reveal my bias. This is one of those reviews that is tainted with nostalgia. When I returned to Atlanta from Houston in 2005, I was thrilled to move to the Grant Park neighborhood. I visited this restaurant multiple times a week. It became one of my favorite spots to hang out in the city. First, they offer a great brunch. The Baby Daddy Skillet is tops. It wasn't even on the menu when I started ordering it - it was a special that quickly became a crowd favorite. The egg wraps are fantastic, too. They have a number of benedict offerings, and those have never disappointed either. They rarely have a wait, have outdoor seating, and offer a great spot to have a lingering brunch with friends. Lunch and dinner have great offerings, too. The fish tacos are my favorites - fantastic option. They also have great burritos and burgers. I'm not sure if nacho tots are still on the menu (or honestly, if they ever were), but those are fantastic, too. Again, there is rarely a wait, and it is a great spot to have a slow dinner to catch up with friends. Over the years, the faces that work there have become friends. The staff is friendly and accommodating. It's a fun place to run into and catch up with neighbors. Now that we have moved north, we have yet to find the place that serves the role that Dakota Blue did in our lives. We miss the relaxed and comfortable neighborhood spot that we had in Grant Park. Dakota Blue has a lot of reviews so I'll be brief. Beer selection is not large. They did have a couple I liked so no worries. I like the menu - plenty for me and my vegetarian wife to choose from. - Chicken burrito: Not huge but enough for a meal. Very tasty. - Chips n cheese: Wonderful, and you get a ton of chips, which are super fresh-tasting. I think I'm going to order this every time I come here. - Tofu tacos: not my style but that vegetarian I mentioned liked them. - Hot sauces: they have them, ask. Service at the bar - outstanding. Dakota Blue is not a large restaurant and if you like sitting at the bar, well, that's even smaller with only room for five or six people. Somewhat of a hole-in-the-wall but definitely one of my favorite brunch places because it is cheap and tasty! Parking - There is plenty of street parking in front of the restaurant on both sides of the street. Ambience - More so on the moody/darker side but I love it because I am usually here on weekend mornings and do not necessarily like a bunch of bright light. It has unique artwork too! Service - The service is pretty solid every time. I have been here multiple times and gotten different people each time with no issues. Food - Loooove the food! Their soysage is great and I can basically sub it within any other meat-based dish. The jalapeño cheese grits are also incredible and I get them each time I eat here. Moreover my friend suggest we came here since he lives a block away so we did. I ordered the Chicken Fingers (spicy) with tots and my friend got a Burger which I'm not much of a burger guy but I had a taste and it was delicious. Also my chicken fingers was so tasty I really liked them. Plus they give you a big portion which is great. I couldn't finish the tots because they were so many. A little on the pricey side for a neighborhood haunt, but worth the money. There is a single bathroom for this entire establishment. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the service and food were exceptional!!! The portions were large and left us with plenty of leftovers. We definitely could have shared food!!! If we weren't on a car trip, we could have had enough for dinner later. It's listed on Google as a kid friendly restaurant but other than a kids menu I wouldn't call it child friendly for the younger ages. Maybe 10 and up. read more

I highly recommend. Nice wait staff. Prompt service, even when they're busy. The food is very good and reasonably priced. IMO, their fried chicken burrito with queso sauce is a slice of paradise. BTW, the fried chicken burrito is not on the menu but they'll make it with fried chicken if you ask. It's a really generous size California style burrito with queso on top and comes with chips. I like how they incorporate bell peppers and onions in the burrito along with rice, black beans and pico de gallo. So good! It's a knife and fork type of meal. read more

I've visited Dakota Blue a few times, and I've decided that I like it. It's going to replace another Tex-Mex place that was my staple for margaritas and queso. I first visited for brunch with a group of about 8 girlfriends. I had the bourbon banana pancakes and they were good, but super, very, extremely sweet. I personally don't eat super sweet anymore, so I found the sugar content to be overwhelming. I wouldn't order them again, but if you have a sweet tooth, dive on in. I also had their hash browns/fried potatoes and they were delicious. Most recently, I've been for lunch, and I had specials both times. The first were tacos with beef or chicken and a sriracha-lime slaw. The slaw was so good that I can't remember the protein. And their tortilla is corn that's not as stiff and thick as corn tortillas I've had in other restaurants. The next time I had brisket sliders with a mustard BBQ sauce. I wasn't sure what a mustard BBQ sauce would taste like; turns out, it's pretty effing good. I've also had their queso and house margarita. I love their house margarita. It's a clear, light green color and perfectly tart and sweet. It tastes amazingly clean for a house margarita. If they use a crappy mix, they got it by me. I saw other reviews talking about the kids, and I was lucky on most visits to go during off times that were usually kid free. When I have seen kids there, I noticed that Dakota's is definitely kid-friendly. There are coloring books and some other items to keep them occupied (although I didn't see any parents using them). Keep this in mind because it is distracting. There is plenty of street parking - but again, I come on off times. Since the park is just up the block, I can see it being crowded on sunny weekends. Pretty consistent spot for better than average bar food. Everyone I've interacted with at DB has been super friendly - really adding substance to that 'neighborhood joint' vibe. There are a few tables outside on Cherokee Ave but expect them to be packed on weekend evenings. Takeout is pretty good. Turkey burger is surprisingly flavorful, and they have bookoo (beaucoup if you're bougie ;) amount of toppings - and not your run-of-the-mill 5 guys burger toppings either - try the chipotle mayo, sriracha 1000 island, asian slaw, sundried tomato tapenade and the pimento cheese and thank me later. read more

My BFFFF is a fresh transplant from New York and this was her first outting in the neighborhood. We went here for brunch on a Saturday morning and were served by the lovely Sophie. The atmosphere quickly reminded us of Lower Hudson Valley Rivertown meets Astoria, Queens. The portions were huge and absolutely delicious. They establishment is dog friendly and they even provide doggie dishes with fresh water which is a plus if you're out walking your dog and decide to grab a bite. We sat outside and got the opportunity to really soak in the neighborhood vibe. Sophie was on the ball, as she was tending to tables both inside and outside where we were sitting. Honestly for what it is, this is a 5 star place. The food is nothing spectacular. I'd even say some of it is downright mediocre. But everybody in my family has like 1-3 things they like, and it's cheap. The servers are always super friendly. It's dog friendly. It's good with kids. They have cheap beer. Groovy spot down in the Grant Park hood. In a mixed use neighborhood w a residential, city-of-trees feel. I think the place had more bicycles than people. Cool pocket of town for sure. We sat outside for a late round of Sunday brunch. The menu was pithy but more than sufficient with plenty of options for grub and brew. Friendly and prompt service made the experience even better and a quick visit from the owner was also a pleasant surprise. I chose the brisket English muffin and hash browns. The entree was served open face with a tomato and two poached eggs. The hash browns were chunked cut potatoes cooked with onions and were delicious. All was smothered with a decadent, peppered queso. She went with the burrito. Simple recipe of only chicken, rice, pico and beans of your choice. All wrapped in a 12" flour tortilla and served with chips. She was also sure to make use of the excess queso from my plate. Indoor/ outdoor seating. Deceptively roomy on the inside. Definitely cheap and a steal for the money. Definitely recommended stop. After discovering the bourbon banana pancakes special that was running for a while in March, I has been and I visited to coda blue for Saturday brunch three weekends in a row. Three. Weekends. (And then we had to stop because I started the whole30 diet.) We love the homey feel of the dining room, and the large number of breakfast and brunch options are so great for a real, get-your-fill brunch experience. We've gotten the banana bourbon pancakes (which are amazing), the blueberry pancakes (which are so-so), and many other a la carte breakfast items like eggs, bacon, and hash browns. They add onions into their skillet potatoes kind by the way, which is a nice easy twist. Much of the staff is very friendly, and I haven't had any unpleasant experiences. Stopped here with my family and grandparents for brunch. Everyone looooved their food. I'm surprised this spot doesn't have a better rating on yelp. I have to say their huevos rancheros were the best huevos rancheros I've ever had. Interestingly the salsa was a greenish color but it tasted like true homemade salsa. It's your comfortable neighborhood joint where you get predictably decent food and predictable decent service and a predictably reasonable check. Nothing to blow your mind away and nothing to write home about, but there's something nice about knowing what you're always going to get. I play Ultimate Frisbee on Sundays, so this is the regular place to grab a beer outside on the sidewalk and to grab a burger, burrito or Cuban sandwich. Everything's less than $10 for the most part so go nuts :) A couple of my favorite dishes: I like their fried scallop tacos. Fried in rice batter, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. All of it nestled in between soft four tortillas with lettuce and pineapple salsa. Also a favorite: Death Tots. Just go and figure it out when you get there. Verdict: decent food, decent price. This is nice little spot next to Grant Park and Zoo Atlanta with a variety of different food choices to choose from, at very reasonable prices. As my husband said, due to the closeness to Grant Park and the Zoo it makes sense to actually go here for food instead of eating at the Zoo. I did not see anything on the menu priced over $10. The food is also really good for the prices, and the servers are attentive. We were a rather large party, so we say outside in the summer and while it was the middle of summer it was actually rather pleasant as they had fans that blew so it helped to keep you cool while you dined. They have a limited drinks menu as they not really bar oriented, if they do have adult beverages, but they bill themselves as a neighborhood joint, as they is definitely the atmosphere they give off, and they are definitely if friendly. read more

If you find yourself in this neighborhood and want a delicious brunch without the wait and without the attitude then visit DAKOTA BLUE (see my disclaimer below about Ria's Bluebird). The breakfast is fairly standard but the SPECIALS are OUT OF THIS WORLD. I am in love with their Baby Daddy Skillet (baked with Apples, Potatoes, Bacon) and served with Eggs Benedict over the top is Ah-mazing! I am a picky person and I've gotten this dish several times and it is sheer perfection. They have several other specials that sound De-lish. I would give the place 5 stars alone for the food. The service is friendly if a little scattered (but someone tell me where in this part of town the service isn't a little scattered). The space is extremely inviting and they even have a little section of toys for this tots. If you hate yourself and want to wait ages for service shooting you the middle finger (then go visit the RUDE people at Ria's Bluebird who advertise on their menu that they specialize in customer DISSERVICE)! The cheese dip is as out of control as the children in this neighborhood hangout. In this case, I mean it as a compliment to the cheese dip, because it is heavenly. An order comes with a huge (easily enough for 6 people) basket of warmed, thin, tri-color chips and a soup-sized bowl of creamy, lightly spicy cheese dip. Forget Tin whoever up the street -if you're craving tex-mex apps in the Grant Park area, come by Dakota Blue. After my first review where I first noted the poorly behaved children that overwhelm this restaurant, I got a kind message from the owner/manager who mentioned that they were looking for ways to address this issue. This place is very busy on a Sunday but it wasn't a long wait to get a seat. I would have given this establishment 5 stars just just for the hustle I observed the wait staff put in to get food to everyone's table - I think they burned more calories in an hour than I do in my gym workout. That said, the wait for my food was a bit longer than I expected. I tried the Baby-daddy breakfasts skillet which had two poached eggs, melted cheese, diced potatoes, bacon, spinach, .....and apples. Honestly, it was just ok - I think the apples cooked in it gave a different flavor that felt they were trying too hard to be creative - but I get it, babies get fed apple sauce. However, daddy's prefer more meat in their breakfast. My overall experience here was good so if I am in the area I will come back, but I will have to try another dish. Alright, let's start with the upside. This spot is in a great location, and it's not difficult to find street parking. We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon and there were plenty of tables and bar seats open, so no wait. On Sundays, they offer a $2 draft Dos Equis deal all day. The Death Tots! have got it going on....cheesy, meaty, spicy goodness. Alright, the downsides. THE FLIES were out of control. While sitting at our table in the side dining room area, we spent our time swatting fruit flies off our food and away from our faces..typically a sign of cleanliness issues somewhere in the restaurant. The Black Bean Patty Cuban was pretty flavorless and dry. Maybe more sauce, or salt, or toppings could do the trick? It's not that I don't like kids, I just don't like other people's kids. Specifically, I don't want to see or hear other people's kids banging on the table, crying, whining, or other doing any other annoying kid-like behavior while I'm trying to brunch. Soooooo, if you are nodding along and agreeing with me, chances are you shouldn't come here for Saturday brunch. As far as the food, it's pretty good. I ordered the Crabs Benedict with cheese jalapeno grits. My crab cakes were a bit too "blackened," aka burnt for my liking, but the poached eggs were perfect. Not too runny, but just right. My husband ordered the Grand Marnier french toast and it was very impressive. I'm not a fan of french toast, but the bite I had of his made me rethink my stance a little. I would recommend this place as a nice FAMILY brunch spot because the prices are very affordable, it's in a great location (right across from Grant Park and the zoo), and is extremely kid friendly. I love Dakota Blue! I always get two meals out of every meal I order, for under $10. Brunch on the weekends is awesome. The staff is pretty nice, and the new drink specials make it even more worth the trip. I always order the black bean cuban for lunch or dinner. It is SO craveable. And for brunch, I alternate between the Eggs Salvador Dali and the Atomic Hoedown depending on my mood. Pros: The food is excellent. The prices are low. The neighborhood is adorable. The staff is nice. Cons: If you're not a fan of children, you might want to steer away on the weekends at lunch time or when the zoo closes. Also, there's a weird fly infestation outside which kind of ruins what would otherwise be a nice Sunday morning outdoor brunch. Was in need of some good nachos, so I decided to check this place out. They were pretty tasty! Definitely a shareable size; I didn't finish half of them! The margaritas were reasonably priced; I ordered two, and had a slight buzz and that says a lot for me lol. Oh! I had the chili as well; it was pretty good! I'm always willing too give the spot off the less traveled path the benefit of the doubt so I stopped by Dakota Blue to grab takeout on the way home from one of my son's baseball games. The spot is far from pretentious and reflects the Grant Park neighborhood in which it's located. We ordered nachos, a Philly cheesesteak and honey chipotle wings (keep that in mind). We sat down and waited for the order which didn't take very long. However, I noticed one of the servers come out of the kitchen area licking his fingers. I immediately think, "That's kinda gross, but wait a minute I ordered HONEY CHIPOTLE WINGS!". Anyone who has had honey-anything wings knows that licking your fingers after touching them is almost a requirement if you don't have wet wipes. So I move to get a better look as he goes back into the kitchen area and, sure enough, he's licking his fingers as he's bagging up our order. Did I see him actually touch the food inside of the Togo boxes? No, but someone else's saliva close to my food is not welcomed. So I call the gentleman over who took our order to explain what I had seen. He brushed it off and said that's probably not what I saw. I explained that I watched him lick his fingers as he walked out the kitchen area and again as he was putting together the carry out order. The second gentleman said that he would take care of it and when to the kitchen and immediately started transferring the prepared food to "brand new containers", as he put it. But this did not solve the problem at hand. He brought the re-plated, soiled, food (in new containers) and explained what he did. I'm sorry, but by then I was disgusted and just asked for a refund. I didn't give them 1 star because the staff was polite and the order was prepared in a short amount of time. Licking your fingers around food is gross in a casual setting. It's doubly disgusting in a professional establishment and should not be tolerated or excused. I won't visit Dakota Blue again. If you do, please pay attention to the servers. That is unless you don't mind the occasional DNA swap. read more

We have not been to this restaurant in several years. And sadly, this will be the last. The service was inattentive, slow and uncaring. Multiple times we had to go find our server - and it was not a busy evening and there were at least three wait staff working. We ordered 2 salads and 3 apps, which took far too long to arrive (approx 15 mins). The cooked apps arrived - salads did not for another 8-10 mins. And when the food arrived all 3 appetizers were terribly over cooked, one of which was not even edible. If I were able to give this establishment a 0 rating I would. Horrible service. Disgusting food. Sad to have to say this about a local establishment. :-( read more

The wife and I went on a Friday for lunch. With this being in Grant Park, we were surprised that there wasn't a lunch crowd. We started off with chips, salsa and guacamole. The salsa had a watery taste to it with a spicy kick in the end. The guac was pretty good and caused me to carb up their big basket of chips really quickly. I ended up eating the brisket tacos. You get 2 tacos with chips. I subbed the chips for tots. I'm not a coleslaw guy but the slaw they have coupled with the sauce/juices from the brisket blended really well together.
