Alma Cocina was an excellent experience! We came during the World Cup, so the restaurant was packed, but the service was still impressively fast. We sat at the bar, and the staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The food was delicious, and the drinks were great. I was especially impressed that even with how busy they were, the quality of the food didn't suffer, a lot of restaurants struggle with that during peak times, but not here. The highlight for me was their crème brûlée. I absolutely love crème brûlée and have tried it at countless restaurants, and Alma Cocina's version was one of the best I've had. The guests were the expected mix of tourists, convention visitors and local show-goers, but it was easy to get a reservation. The host was kind enough to seat half the party of 4 while waiting for the other half who were delayed by MARTA issues. The service was friendly and efficient, but with some long delays waiting for drinks and to place additional orders. They're very used to getting people in and out quickly, it seems, so even with that delay they were swift to bring the check and get us on our way. I got the blood orange margarita, and my husband got the original margarita. Both were sooo good!! Fresh and clean tasting. Neither sweet, which I prefer. We got the fried cheese appetizer based off all the recommendations. This was unique and fun! We would've preferred it with chips or something different than the corn tortillas it came with. Reservations recommended, although the staff found us a table after a short wait. We had the pink margarita cocktail special to support breast cancer research. The server recommended the Guava-Queso Guacamole and that was great. It was just the right amount for two, a scoop of fresh guacamole with guava jam on top, sprinkled with cheese crumbles. That came with a basket of whole fried tortillas as chips. Delicious. My companion ordered the Bulgogi tacos and I had the pork tacos, both with sides of rice and black beans. There were three tacos in each order, mine on corn and hers on wheat tortillas. I thought both were excellent. The restaurant is very nice inside and huge. There is a full bar in one room where seats are first-come, first-served. Another room appears to be for large groups. The main dining area has booths and tables. Service was fast and friendly. Thank you both for steering me in the right direction! I was a little skeptical about ordering the octopus, but I'm so glad I listened. It was incredibly tender and full of flavor. The purple potato mash and olives complemented it perfectly and really brought the whole dish together. The elote was fresh, flavorful, and the portion was definitely big enough to share. Now the star of the show: the spicy shrimp tacos. Yummmmm. Absolutely packed with flavor and the perfect amount of heat. I'll be thinking about those for a while. Can't wait to come back! read more

I walked by this place a few times, hesitant to go in because it looked a little too upscale and less authentic than I'm used to. I finally gave in and was glad I did. Things started a bit chaotic as the staff worked out seating, but once settled, service moved like a well-oiled machine. Every staff member I interacted with was exceptionally pleasant. I ordered the agua fresca, chicken mole, and fried plantains. The agua fresca wasn't really my thing, with a sour profile I didn't love. But the chicken mole was excellent--juicy, flavorful, and served with mashed potatoes and a touch of green beans. The real star, though, was the plantains. The portion could easily feed three, and the price was only slightly more than I'd usually pay for a single serving elsewhere. More importantly, they were the best fried sweet plantains I've ever had, so good I joked with the waitress about hiring the cook away and moving them to Richmond. I'm glad I got over judging a book by its cover, this was a memorable dinner and a place I'll definitely return to. read more

Such a great dining experience from start to finish! Our server Caleb was on point. He recommended the guacamole trio, which I was skeptical of but it was so good. The guava queso one was delicious - not what you think - it was cotija cheese so no melted queso to worry about LOL! The market fish was red fish and it had a great sear. The coconut ginger broth was yummy. The tortilla chips were basically fried corn tortillas - can you say delish?! I knew there had been significant Mexican and Central American migration to Atlanta, but as a Californian who spends a lot of time in Mexico, I would have not ventured here if it weren't for the passion of the Yelp Elites. We were hilariously escorted next door by Brian, a standup who happens to work at the Ritz. The hostess was warm and informative. I ended up getting the dish she recommended, Pork Pibil. More on that as I get into the food and drinks below. My wife drank a Just Wear Black, which is kind of their skinny margarita. It was pretty good. 4 stars I drank the Ensamble, a Mezcal margarita that was 100% on point. My wife joined me and got one for our second round. 5 stars Guacamole Trio - 1) traditional guac made with Serrano chiles, tomato, cilantro and red onion (delish); 2) guac a sweet layer of guava and queso on top (I loved this variation); and 3) escabeche with pickled onions on top (my wife's fave). 5 stars for doing something different and doing it well. I had the Pork Cochinita "Pibil" (an ancient Mexican barbecuing technique) served with charro beans, amazing plantains, lots of cilantro, pickled onion, queso cotija, warm tortillas. 5 stars. My boo had the Pork Belly "Pastor" tacos. They were good, but maybe just 4-star good. The service was fantastic!!! Everyone was friendly and informative. They made the experience a real pleasure. 5 stars Most items on the menu are gluten-free or can be made gluten- friendly. The food here was really good. I had been to this location next to the Ritz Carlton when it was a Turkish restaurant, and I definitely prefer what has replaced it. We came on a Sunday night as part of a large group. There weren't too many customers. The staff was attentive, and the menu featured a lot of coastal Mexican options. Someone in my group ordered guacamole with guava cheese and I thought the sweetness was a bit bizarre compared to the traditional offering. I ordered the Baja fish which turned out to be an entire cod without the head. Not sure if that is local to Baja California, but it was basically like fish and chips without the chips. Instead there were a number of salsas to dip in. I also ordered a side of black beans and cilantro rice which was very subtle in its seasoning which I preferred. Dropped in last night on a whim to be met with an entirely full restaurant--I mean, not a single seat was vacant. Every bar seat, high top, booth, and table were taken. In my opinion that is a promising sign, especially on a Tuesday. We did not have to wait the expected hour and were seated within 15-20 minutes at a four top booth. Our server, Nisreen, greeted us immediately and was so kind. I ordered the Just Wear Black and my partner ordered the Naranjarita. Both drinks were great, but the naranjarita was the standout. It was so stunningly tart and not too sweet. I love tart drinks! We ordered the salsa negra, queso fundido with chorizo, smoked salmon tlayuda, and Korean beef bulgogi tacos. The salsa was perfect--savory, tangy, and rich with a smokiness that was not overpowering. I could not try the fundido due to a dairy allergy unfortunately. The smoked salmon tlayuda was delicious. The watercress slaw was a perfect fresh and bright compliment to the smoky salmon and charred tlayuda. The Korean beef bulgogi tacos were also delicious, but by the time they hit the table, I was too full of chips and salsa to eat much more. We were immediately greeted, sat at the comfiest bar seats and ordered some apps. The guac and salsa sampler is so unique!
