This place is cool. Staff gives a little bit mixed information from their peers....but luckily we met Crystal! And thanks to her, our son did not have to be told it was more expensive than we thought to get him his first beta. Crystal is sweet and patient, and very knowledgeable. She definitely will not try to sell you more than you need. I came here to look at Bettas, planning to get one in the future (budgeting and stuff). And I was wanting to avoid Petco or big box stores because they tend to house and treat their Bettas terribly... But then I was shocked when the ones here were treated just as bad. I'm just a novice in this space, but I saw multiple dead or near dead ones and a lot with fin rot. Ironically, the ones that cost the most were the ones in the worst shape (versus the $8 ones in the cups). Just disappointed because they seem to treat the rest of the fish here great. And the fact the sicker ones were more expensive... seemed like a scam. As soon as the employees saw me investigating the Bettas they also all bolted, lol... Literally avoiding me and not one asking if I wanted to purchase. So it kind of reads--scam. But the treatment of them was the absolute worst part. read more

I always go there for my supplies and no issues. I go quite regularly and help is promptly. This is a store that has a large selection of fishes, corals, anemones. Always keep checking because they get in plenty of livestock, but have plenty of livestock on hand to browse too. Also, how late they stay open helps for any last minute trips to the store for saltwater. The store is laid out in a nice manner to where you can navigate easily. Their deals tend to vary depending on the season and such given holidays too. Recently, they got a ton of designer clownfishes in for potential buyers along with some nice rainbow bubble anemones. They do get some large anemones as in the rose bubble anemone in their main showcase coral tank. I have read a few of the past reviews of DNA, while everyone is entitled to their thoughts respectfully. For me, I do my own research with an occasional asking of advice, but there are plenty of online forums that you can come to a general consensus on your question and not leave it solely up to the employees there. I always say do your own research before hastily buying something. Just because I say long tentacle anemones are easy to keep, other fish hobbyist may differ in opinions, so do your own research online is my advice. As far as pricing goes, who doesn't like deals? Realistically, are you going to get mocha storm clownfishes for 20 bucks? Nah. The place has keep up with overhead being a brick and mortar business and while some prices are definitely up there, but there are definitely deals in there too. I have picked up corals in which I was happy with the pricing. The new designer clowns were priced well/fairly and pairing was below even what online sellers sold for. I have shopped at various stores which have prices differently priced depending on what you buy. This place is no different. My elite tip as you know or not know is follow their online social media - Facebook for deals. They do run end of year deals like 30 percent off livestock or something to that effect and New Years. Now the customer service aspect, I have not had any issues. For everyone it is different, I personally don't like people coming up to me at every moment, but prefer to browse and if I am interested then I will grab someone. This isn't like a restaurant refilling your drink for me at least in comparison but I get past reviewers' input on customer service. As far as my experience goes, I came across a purple long tentacle anemone recently and been looking for those for some time and advised me on the health ahead of time. I got it regardless and appreciated his honesty on it too, since I managed to nurse another LT back from less than favorable health which it is doing fantastic. I understood the risk and still bought it, since I have good experience in keeping them. He did not have to say it but he did advise me so that is excellent customer service, so kudos to him. The cashiers are prompt to check out and friendly. I still don't know why they ask for my name though unless I am getting some reward points I don't know about and by now I should have alot! Lol. I really enjoy going to the store even to window fish/coral browsing on stuff I love to have but no room in my tank. I brought 7 fish from this place. I have now lost 20 fish and counting. It's sickening to watch them starve themselves, bang their bodies against the rocks until they tear themselves apart, and the long stringy white poop. Smh I'm so hurt. I have had some of my beautiful fish for over a year. When you walk into Dallas North Aquarium, just look into the tanks and watch for the dead fish, or the ones who are floating upside down about to die. They don't even bother to get them out. PLEASE BEWARE!!! I'm cleansing my whole 120-gallon tank of parasites. The fish that you see in the pics are all gone now. You can see how most of them were suffering and getting ready to die. I AM SO ANGRY! And someone has the audacity to respond, to my post, that the crew had a different response than I did from my initial visit. REALLY! What did you expect them to say; Oh yeah, we didn't really want to help this customer (I don't know why the reps seem to avoid "CERTAIN" people), but we made damn sure he didn't steal anything? I was recently in the market to purchase a new reef tank and visiting the Dallas North Aquarium. I first spoke with Justin M and was impressed with his knowledge and excellent customer service. Justin took the time to explain how systems have changed since I last had a reef tank 25 years ago. Justin gave me his business card and told me if I have any additional questions to give him a call. After doing more research, I returned to Dallas north Aquarium and again worked with Justin M. The system I wanted needed to be ordered and I was advised it would take a week. After placing the order Justin helped me pick out the rock and sand to design an incredible reef, with a wide variety of caves and ledges for corals to be added. He worked with me to build the reef with perfect, set up the service to build the tank and install it in my house. The complete staff from sales, service and management are first class. I have had the opportunity to work with multiple divisions and have found the staff is available at all levels. Hats off to Sean the general manager, you run a great store with amazing staff. While this "fish store" is pretty much one of the best in North Dallas... I mainly want to talk about one of its employees. Brett K? Or maybe it was Brett W? I walked in today to do my normal fish shopping and Brett assisted me and all I have to say is I HOPE MANAGEMENT KNOWS HOW GOOD BRETT IS?!!! Not only did he assist me with my initial needs, needing RO water but then instead of doing the typical "drop it in the front and go to the next customer" he asked me if I needed any more help? Then he was able to answer all my questions about new fish and how I should introduce new fish to my tank. In comparison, he is the 2nd guy who actually helped me and answered my questions and seemed like he wanted to help me whom enjoyed his job. Buyer Beware!! They have nice fish selection but depending on the associate they may not make good recommendations for tank compatibility. Do not buy any hardware there unless you know exactly what you are getting and make sure the packaging looks pristine from the manufacturer. I bought a full Neptune Apex system including the DOS pump. The shrink wrap on the DOS was really loose compared to the packaging on the Apex box. When I installed the system the DOS was broken right out of the box and from the shrink wrap appearance I suspect it was a repackaged return. I took it right back and was told I had to deal with Neptune directly. Basically tough cookies. It took almost a whole month to get the DOS replaced and had to pay Neptune a $200 deposit pending their diagnosis. In DNA's defense they did take the new return back for a store credit. Speaking with the owner I was told he only makes 9% and he couldn't afford to support his products. I try to buy locally and don't mind paying a premium price for service. DNA can't be relied upon for servicing their products. They've lost a lot more than the 9%. After I've used up my store credit I probably won't be buying anything else. read more

I have to say this place is beautiful!!! So big and so much selection. Everyone is always nice and super helpful if I need anything or have questions. I've picked up a few live plants so far and they look great. I bought a bunch of plants online and they died within the first week. Luckily everything I bought here had roots so I think they'll do well. Overall I wish it were closer to my house and that's my only complaint. read more

I've been a customer of Dallas North Aquarium since the mid-1990s. The experience of being their customer has diminished over the years. But I don't think that's too uncommon, so it doesn't surprise me. Here's what chapped me to the point of taking time to review my experience today. I bought an Eheim canister filter to replace my existing one while I search for a part to repair the old one. The bonus: When I get the old one repaired, I'll have two, which should make filter maintenance a bit faster. Only I bought the wrong model. I found out the hard way that my only two options for returning or exchanging are: 1) Return it for store credit that can be applied to the model I need. (I guess they have the one I need, but I'm not sure. We didn't get that far.) 2) Return it for a refund on my credit card MINUS a 7% return charge. I would likely be interested in exchanging. After all, I could have ordered the one I bought from Amazon for $40 less and gotten it in 2 days, yet I still bought it at this store. I wanted it today and I'm happy to patronize local businesses -- especially local businesses I've patronized for decades anyway. Had I known about the return charge before I bought the item, that would have been an entirely different story and an entirely different response from me. But I saw no signs displaying the policy. There was no mention before the purchase. And there was nothing on the receipt except a notation about no cash-back returns. (Even if there had been something on the receipt, I still wouldn't have known about it until AFTER the purchase.) There's something about their narrow selection of return choices that feels limiting and punitive. The return penalty would only be around $14. But the policy itself is a bridge too far for me. I MAY continue to be a customer -- for live fish only. ... And even then, only if I can't find what I need somewhere else. But from now on, I WILL shop elsewhere first. I can't help wondering if the 7% return penalty will make up for the loss of good will, even from one customer. read more

This place is complete trash. I have been so many times over the last 4 years and spent so much money. Over the last year I have gone about twice a month and every single time the inventory is more expensive and less options. Then today, I went in because I had $80 store credit due to an error on their end. When I got there we like to check out the used tanks and coral room first and I saw a JBJ rimless tank that had no lights, no heater, and a crooked stand. It has been there for about 3 months and wasn't priced. I asked and was told it was 299.99 (after she texted the owner for clarification). I told her I didn't want to spend that much but thank you for finding out the price. We walked into the fish room and I saw her asking the manager on duty (guy with glasses and skinny face) about the tank and she mentioned that we wanted to buy it but that we didn't want to spend that much. His response after looking our way was "That's fine if they don't want to buy it at 299. We will just wait and sell it to someone else for 349". I overheard that and it made me a little frustrated. I work retail and I understand his logic to a point but to say that out loud in front of the customer..... no. I blew that off and started looking at fish and clean up crew because my tanks could use some more hermits, we found a rock with some coral on it and we stood there waiting to ask how much it was because again, not marked. While we waited another customer walked up and started looking at stuff too. An employee walked right up to him and he inquired about the very rock I was waiting for and she told him it was 29.99 and he said yeah he wants it. Both of these things just threw me over the edge as a long time customer. I told my concerns to the lady that was helping us and asked if we could cash out our store credit as we just don't want to come back. She said "no we don't offer that" and "I'm sorry you heard the manager". Anyways, go support a more mom-n-pop style store and not the Walmart of fish stores. I hope they take the time to read this and contact me, but I don't have high hopes. read more

Do not buy fish here unless you plan to treat them for ick. I randomly bought two mollies here and they had ick and infected my cardinal tetra tank. At this point it is likely going to kill all of them while trying to treat. Yes, I am partly responsible. I should not have trusted a store. Please order your fish online or visit another store. I used Dallas North Aquarium for over 6-7 years for fish tank installation and maintenance. Their service has been consistent over the years and their consultation is always very thorough. However, I have also noticed the "pool boy" factor has become increasingly prevalent. That is, some guy with a faux hawk / messy hairdo that shows up at your door and has the IQ of a bag of rusty nails. When asking for an educated answer in the recent years, I get "uhhh yeah, I'll have to check on that for you," hence my decrease in requested business. The new location off of Marsh and Trinity Mills located on the other side of the street from their old location is impressive. If you always wanted to go to an aquarium but don't have the money due to hardships, this is a place to go and wander around. They take care of their fish real well and other than prices written on the glass, I could swear I was at an actual exhibit. They have a good amount of rare tropical fish including various species of plecostamus and sharks (rainbow/red tailed black sharks). Arowanas are a rarity here. Their prices for arowanas, when they do have them are usually 3x the amount compared to Petsmart and for the generic silver arowana at that! If you have ever seen an Australian green arowana or rainbow arowana, you would wonder why even go with a silver one. The placement of product is very logical. The sales people at the store are extremely helpful. I found myself going to the store for answers more so than asking the maintenance guys. They also buy fish and aquariums from you but expect about 1/10 of the price in return so best to hit up Craigslist or even ebay if you dare to ship large items. Dallas North Aquarium is OK. I would go for advice rather than buying anything. Many fish stores located in Richardson and on the outskirts of Garland offer more fish (species/variations) at much better prices. I am a very conscious shopper due to the economy but even when it gets better (hopefully), I will use Petsmart for supplies and the smaller stores for fish. read more

I'm losing fish that were happy and healthy, now having to dose with expensive medication in hopes of saving the rest of my aquatic friends. While we at first loved Dallas North so much to store all of our fish babies... all trust has been lost over our last to visits. We had to move our tank and chose to place them at Dallas North- this was a scary event. Shortly after placing them there we lost our most expensive fish ($300 frontosa) however they did not have the fish? Seemed shady. They claim another fish killed it. All fish were healthy when placed with them- within 24 hrs of getting home - over half of the fish has first signs of ich... once again this tank had NEVER had any ich issues prior to DNA. Lastly we purchased an Mbuna and placed it in a tank by its self as well- and it had ich as well!!! Extremely disappointing for such a beautiful store to have such an issue with health... read more
