I've always enjoyed Damon's Steak House for its cocktails, steaks, and the festive Polynesian/Hawaiian atmosphere-- the place IS fun. That said, I hadn't been there in a good decade and I have to say things need some attention... My date and I arrived at the messiest of bars and witnessed bartenders electing to joke around with one another before cleaning up the bar portion we sat at or even take our order, things which SHOULD take priority. We get the previous customers spent and dirty plates removed, the counter wiped down, and our orders put in eventually however: 1 Mai Tai and 1 Chi Chi and Coconut Shrimp as well as another appetizer I'm forgetting. The drinks are solid. Expensive. But fine. The food just feels like re-heated junk. The horseradish we read as being part of some exotic sounding dipping sauce for one of the appetizers? Not present. Not even a tad bit of horseradish in the dipping sauce for the coconut shrimp. Just some sweet stuff. When questioned about it, they cop to that being the case for some time and that it is often forgotten in the prep. Huh. Oh well. It's just sloppy enough of a showing food-wise that we forego having dinner there and mosey elsewhere. Will give it another go sometime soon. Damon's? Go for the cocktails. read more

If Disney opened an adults-only enchanted tiki steakhouse... it'd probably look a lot like Damon's. Walking in feels like stepping into a time capsule. The dim lighting, bamboo, vintage Polynesian decor, hanging canoes, glowing tiki lamps, aquarium, and old-school island soundtrack make this one of the coolest dining rooms in Los Angeles. It's nostalgic in the best way, and honestly, the atmosphere alone is worth experiencing once. It's easy to see why Damon's has become such a Glendale institution since 1937. Unfortunately, that's where the experience peaked for me. We started with the potato skins, which were fine--crispy enough, loaded with cheese and bacon--but they felt like something you'd find at Chili's or TGI Fridays. Good, just not memorable. The famous house salad was fresh, but again... nothing that really stood out. For entrees we ordered the Rib Cap and the Sirloin & Shrimp. The rib cap had decent flavor, but for a premium cut I expected more tenderness and a bigger wow factor. The sirloin was cooked properly, the shrimp were fine, and the sautéed spinach was actually one of the better parts of the meal. Overall though, nothing tasted bad--it just never rose above "solid chain steakhouse" quality. The cocktails were probably the biggest surprise. In a place built around tiki culture, I expected drinks that transported me. Instead they were just... okay. Perfectly drinkable, but lacking the punch and creativity you'd hope for from such an iconic tiki destination. Reading through other reviews afterward, it seems I'm not alone. Most people absolutely love Damon's for its atmosphere, history, and nostalgic charm, while opinions on the food tend to be much more mixed. Many longtime guests return because the experience is unique, even if the menu hasn't evolved much over the years. Bottom line: Come for the atmosphere. Come for the history. Come because it's one of Southern California's classic tiki restaurants. Just don't come expecting one of LA's best steakhouses. Damon's feels like dinner inside an enchanted Disney tiki attraction, but the food and drinks never quite match the magic of the room. If they elevated the menu and cocktail program to the same level as the atmosphere, this place could easily become one of my favorite restaurants in Los Angeles. Vintage, classic restaurants are far and few between, so this is one to be treasured. Just the Tiki atmosphere is welcoming enough, with the archive murals of Polynesian life. I had to order a steak, so got the 8 oz. filet mignon and it was well prepared. Meals come with soup or salad, a side and plenty of bread-- you won't leave hungry. I enjoyed the spinach as a side (and was not too buttery). The shrimp brochette is also a standout. I love that a server tosses your salad table side, and we all opted for the blue cheese dressing, which was very tasty. Solid place with a cool old school tiki vibe to it. I sat at the bar and enjoyed the friendliness and service overall. There was a good variety of drinks but we went with the Mai tai since that's what the bartender recommended and it was overall a good drink. Food was also a solid choice as we got the Wagyu corn dog 8/10, a steak with a baked potato and a burger. Overall everything tasted good, there wasn't anything outstanding but would still come back here again. I remember coming here 11 years ago after going to Porto's next door & discovering there was a tiki bar next door! But this time we actually ate here as to last was just a couple of drinks so to start I love the ambience of the place the wall paper along with all the murals on the wall taking me back to Hawaii! I ordered a Mai Chi which I actually really enjoyed! We also ordered the garlic bread which was pretty good. I ordered the mahi mahi with french fries which were good I enjoyed it myself. I also had gotten the salad prior to the main course which I liked. The service from the assistant manager was really good! As to our actual server my guy just needed a little more help. This place is Old Skool, probably one of the oldest restaurants in Glendale. We have been coming to Damon's now for about 10 years now to celebrate my Son's Birthday, our annual tradition.. I would have to say that over all the years the food and service has always been consistent. We always have a large party of 15+ and the staff is always willing to accommodate us every time. I usually always order my staple coconut fried shrimp, always cooked to perfection and jumbo size is an understatement.. They are of gargantuan size and the entree includes around eight of them. These coupled with one of their signature Mai Tais and boom, I am in Hawaii! The ambiance of this place is so cool! Good thing we could be seated immediately at the bar area, which also has tables and chairs and has the full menu and full service. The inside decor is tiki themed which is fun. Food: - Side: famous garlic bread - it was a lot bigger than we expected! It's a full thick loaf and could have been shared with 4-5 people. The topping is unique and tasty. - Appetizer (dinner special): mussels in garlic wine sauce. The sauce was so delicious that we dipped our garlic bread in it. Definitely recommend. It was a great starter that didn't make us overly full. - Entree (dinner special): I had the sea bass with a mushroom cream sauce. This was the only dish that wasn't that great. The fish was dry and hard and the sauce was okay. I chose the side of snap peas and that was delicious! - Entree: my husband had the 16 oz ribeye steak. It was delicious and cooked perfectly. My family and I came here for an early dinner. The restaurant is spacious and much larger than I expected! There's plenty of seating and a bar section. We came with our little one so we were tucked away in a side booth, which we much preferred so as not to disturb other guests. lol! The staff were all very kind and attentive. They checked in on us regularly. The food isn't something to boast about taste wise but the portions are large! We were pleased w the amount of food we got for the price. I got fish and chips and thought it was easily shareable. My husband got a burger. My kid got tenders and Mac and cheese. This establishment is one of the oldest in Glendale. It has a Polynesian theme and decor. They have a bar but in all honesty it's Diner food. I do not recommend the food at this establishment. Was finally able to check out this place in Glendale. There is parking around the back near Porto's. I went with a group of 4 on a Friday night and were able to get a table right away. Damon is one of my families favorite restaurants that we've been going to for decades. The food is absolutely delicious especially if you come on weekends and can get the prime rib. Service is super friendly and makes the house salad table side. The ambience is really fun and they have a large fish tank which my baby nephew is always obsessed with drinks are good and everything is well priced for the portion sizes. The hardest part is the sewer system i could smell as we walked in the door. It is apparently a problem for the whole block. The city or all the businesses need to change out the main line. I bet it hasnt been changed since they switched to this location when I was a child. I am 66.. but not a good odor for a fancy restaurant nor Porto's next door. We visited this restaurant with our children and were looking forward to a nice family dinner. Unfortunately, the guests seated behind us were extremely loud and used profanity throughout their conversation, with nearly every sentence containing offensive language. We understand that a restaurant cannot completely control what customers say. However, after we politely brought the issue to the manager's attention, no effort was made to address the situation, speak with the guests, or offer us a different table. We felt our concerns were completely dismissed. What disappointed us most was not the behavior of the other diners, but the lack of customer service and concern from management. As a family with young children, we expected a more professional response. Sadly, this experience left a very negative impression, and we will think twice before returning. This place was perfect! From the initial greet to being seated to the food, everything was fantastic. We had a larger party for my birthday, and they handled everything perfectly. The Damon's team checked in with me to make sure all my guests were going to be present, and had everything ready for me when everyone arrived. The bar staff was amazing, pretty sure her name was Roxy, and she made everyone's drink with passion and enthusiasm. All food was delivered together for my large party, and everything was at a perfect temp. We all understand that juggling 15 guests is difficult, but this team handled it with ease. All finished plates were taken away in a timely fashion, and the payment was handled in a timely fashion. My party was held on the 31st of May, and the entire staff had a great time interacting with everyone with my group. My date and I enjoyed a very pleasant evening at Damon's. I hadn't visited in nearly 20 years, and fell in love again. Servi e was prompt given we were walk-ins, seated quickly. I remembered the Polynesian decor fondly and found it comforting. Lighting was that perfect balance of dim without being overly dark. Our server was very pleasant and checked with us regularly. The New York steak was cooked perfectly as I ordered, rare & taste was excellent. All I added was my customary shakes of salt & pepper. A good steak should require no more than that. And my lady's chicken, wow. Truthfully among the best chicken I've ever tasted. And better yet, their sig nature Mai Tais weren't watered down sugarboats. These Mai Tais were packing. It's Friday nite and I was invited to Jack's 50th They picked one of their favorite spots! I haven't been to Damon's in ages! After all these years, it still looks the same! To me, pure nostalgia with the old school Polynesian tiki style vibe! Always delicious drinks! Loved my blue Hawaiian and rounds of old fashions were dished out. Always a wonderful spot with exceptional service! We ordered delicious appetizers: calamari, coconut shrimp, potato skins, and the famous garlic bread! I like the atmosphere, I think the tiki theme is a lot of fun but I wish the menu reflected the theme. Hawaii is well known for amazing, delicious barbecue and that just wasn't what we found at Damon's. For starters, we didn't realize the garlic bread was a charge. Our waitress asked if we wanted bread or garlic bread. Of course, we should've asked, but as bread is complimentary at most restaurants it didn't even cross my mind! At most, I would've paid $3 for the bread. $10 is astronomical. The bbq combo platter was okay, though the bbq sauce dumped on top tasted cheap and very sweet. I would've preferred to add my own rather than having a pre fixed amount. The coulotte steak was tough and stringy and well past the medium rare I ordered. The ambiance is great--I have no complaints about that--but the most important part is the food. The steak and salmon were overcooked, so we did not enjoy them. We also ordered edamame, and they served us pale green beans. We tasted them just to make sure it wasn't only the appearance, but they were sour. Why would they even attempt to serve this? We were seated in the very back and it took almost 20 minutes for someone to come and start talking to us and asking for our orders. The waitress came to take our drink order, when she left, took another 20 minutes to return. She later came to take our dinner order. The salad arrived promptly but then nothing else did. It probably took another 25 minutes for the entrées to arrive. 2 of Steaks were not prepared to the proper temperature, they were ordered Medium and were raw inside, so they had to be returned to continue cooking. One of the dishes had the incorrect side dish. One entrée salad we ordered never arrived. The server who brought the entrees promptly took the dishes back in order to correct the steaks however, the steaks took another 20-25 minutes to come back and only returned after we had to ask someone about their status. Every time we looked around for the waitress, we could not locate her. When the meal was just about done, again we were looking around for our waitress to inquire about dessert and the check. After being unable to locate her, we asked for the check from about four different people. Finally, I had to get up from the table, go to the front and ask for someone to bring us the check. The employee I spoke to said they were waiting to bring the check with the dessert. That was a dessert that we had asked for 30 minutes prior. When the check arrived, again we could not locate the waitress, so I took the check up to the front to pay the bill. While the food was tasty, and the atmosphere was good, the service was very lacking today. This is not how I remember it being at Damon's. I don't think I will return with a large party. It was a shame since we were celebrating a family birthday and it was not the great experience that we were expecting. read more
