Is Damon's trendy? Not even a little. Is Damon's hipster? Hell, no. (Add one star.) Is Damon's intimate? Perhaps. Is Damon's romantic? Depends. Does your idea of romance include: Chi Chi rum drinks half off from 4-7? Bartenders in tropical shirts? Murals featuring vaguely Polynesian couples, doing vaguely romantic things? Adorable Tiki cocktail napkins? Free matches? Yes? Then Damon's is very romantic. My experience, based on one Happy Hour, is that Damon's bar would be the perfect place to watch the big game, imbide some inexpensive tropical drinks loaded with alcohol ($5.50 during HH 4-7, M-F), and have some laughs. The bartender was genuniely funny and entertaining and actually came out to my little table in the bar area to take my order and bring me my check. Unheard of in this day and age! So refreshing not be completely ignored by the barkeep. How much can one person rave about a restaurant that originated in 1937 and is still packing "Them" in like a Dodger playoff game! This was our experience at Daman's Steakhouse in Glendale. You can't get more Old School / Tiki Bar'ish [sic] than this gem. It's big in every way: Area / Size Menu Comfort Umbrella Drinks Saltwater Fish Tanks Ambiance It's big in every way except the price of the food. So, I have one friend who loves this old school thing. We have been to: Phillip's Coles Tam O'Shanters Taylor's Steakhouse Musso and Frank's The Galley Chez Jay Hinano Lawry's and probably more that I cannot recollect at this point. But, Daman's was just another fantastic walk down memory lane. Will the food ever get a Michelin Star - No. But that's not the point of these historic SoCal institutions. We drank Mai Tai's, beer on tab, had their famous house salad, a rack of ribs, a pork chop, cole slaw, creamed corn and spinach, mac and cheese, butterscotch pudding and barely hit the $80 mark (without tip). Someone mentioned this place being stuck in a time warp, funny I can picture bumping into Mr Furley from Threes company there. I ordered the prime rib, twice baked potato, and house salad. The server was a crack up, the house dressing salad is prepared for you unless you ask for the dressing on the side. The house dressing is a thousand island variant. Though they lay it on thick it wasn't overpowering as I'd expect it to be. The twice baked potato was a bit dry, I was offered sour creme and chives. It was a shame it was dry, though that addition was a good save on the servers part. The prime rib was good although I would not rave about it. It could of used a tad more seasoning. It was a good cut. One thing I was disappointed about was the whip machine was broken, the pineapple whip was enticing. They do have swag at the cashier, mugs and glasses. I have dined at Damon's since it was a hole in the wall joint on Central Avenue. It has been at the Brand location for a very long time. Though it changed locations and size over the 44 years I've.been a customer, the quality of the food and service endures. Back in town for a few days, I took a friend for dinner. We both ordered the petite tenderloin, potato, salad, garlic toast and the potent mai-tais. Everything was well prepared and tasty. Be careful with the Mai tai, it'll hit you like novocaine!! Just the sweetest owners! We live across the street and often stop in for to go sides and they're always really helpful even on busy nights. We love coming to dine in here as well! The staff is always very friendly and attentive. Food is great and good sized portions. Since they are currently closed on mondays they are doing "Tiki tuesdays" with both Mai tais and chi chi's on special! The cocktails are our favorite!! Only need one or two and you're good to go. Old school food. The drinks, not strong, even the classic Trader Vic's Mai Tai was watered down. The Manhattan Island was not really Macadamia, more Hazelnut and cloying. The Coconut Shrimp spent way too long in the fryer and were totally dried out. The salad is BATHED in dressing. The soup has less liquid in it and basically tastes like ketchup and mayonaise mixed together. The tiny, tiny filet was cooked correctly (medium rare) but had zero flavor and was a bit mealy indicating that it had been frozen. Disneyland food at Chop House prices. Decided to try the food at Damon's Steak House for the first time in the four years that I've worked in the area. I went during my lunch break and realized it was pretty quiet and relaxing, which is a nice break after a busy morning at the office. The place is dark, but welcoming, and nicely designed to give the tropical/tiki bar ambiance. The chairs were a bit outdated as my booth had a few dips on the leather upholstery. I was in the mood for something lighter, so I ordered fish with a choice of a salad and one of their sides. MAI TAI 3/5: My friend's order, but I tried some and it wasn't the same as it used to be. It seemed pretty plain in flavor but I could tell it was strong. My friend couldn't finish it. ALASKAN GRILLED ATLANTIC SALMON 4/5: The salmon on its own was fine. Not too moist or dry, but fine. I liked the tartar sauce and the lemon wedges on the side. SIDE SALAD 3/5: Nothing special. I liked the shredded beets but I wasn't a fan of the dressing and that it was tossed...seemed a bit too heavy for my taste. CREAMED CORN 3/5: Not the most savory one I've had. The corn was crunchy and not that cooked as it's normally been when I order cranes corn at other places. The creamy sauce was a bit bland. Although the service was also nice and efficient, I ended up paying about $35 dollars when I split the check with my friend who had a steak and it didn't seem all that worth it. The only thing I'd order again would be the salmon if I were to return, and perhaps try another side as they have a large selection from which to choose. My husband and I visited yesterday evening since I was in the area for training. It's definitely a hole in the wall spot but nonetheless we were satisfied. The inside decor is interesting...a Hawaiian themed steakhouse. For drinks...I requested if they could make me a French 75. It was on the spot and good. My husband had their version of a Long Island ice tea (can't remember the name) but he enjoyed it. For food...I had the Alaskan grilled salmon and requested yellow rice. We've been to Damon's three times now and we were probably going to be regulars if not for our experience today. The food is not spectacular--soup and salad are good--but a steak house should be able to cook a steak accurately. Most times we come the steak is either under or over (we order medium rare). It's also pretty expensive for what you get. Nonetheless, we have liked Damon's because there's generally no wait for a seat out by the sidewalk for dinner on the weekends and it's pretty kid friendly. We had a terrible experience today with the hostess seating us who treated my husband rudely because we didn't have a reservation. (All the tables out front were empty and we were still able to be seated immediately--so I don't know what the deal was). We had a party of six and asked to put two tables together which was declined because "they might have been reserved." Well. They weren't. During our whole hour long dining experience crammed at one table, no one came to sit any any of the tables next to us and it was still pretty empty when we left. We value customer service and minimal waiting (as we have young children) over trendiness and we're even willing to pay a lot for that. I must say, it left a bad taste in my mouth to be treated as a second class customer while paying $48 for my entree. Next time I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

This place reminds me of a 70's supper club in rural Wisconsin, complete with the musty odor of old carpet, and worn oak woodwork. The topper is that I am sitting next to an online dating scene. The non-manly guy with a rapid fire laugh (nervous?) with a woman non-stop talking about past dates (Daters... don't do this. It's not helpful). Yow! I want to step in to coach, yet perhaps they deserve each other. This place violates most of my rules. Crusty bartender throwing used napkin down for my drink, on dirty bar top (He warms up at toward the end of my visit, and calls me "friend"). The house salad was a chopped concoction of veggies. Not a celery fan, unless it's a garnish for a Bloody, but I'm guessing I had no choice. I opted for the salmon and twice baked. The salmon was very good, and the main reason for the 3-star. I went here fairly recently and this place is five stars for the tiki vibes. Most people here were locals and decked out in hawaiin shirts. The food? Not quite five stars. I'll start with the highlights; the coconut shrimp with their marmalade sauce was the best. The shrimp was crispy and the sauce had a bite to it. Runner up was their potato skins. It was the perfect ratio of potato to cheese, sour cream, chives, bacon, etc. Tiki drinks were solid as well. I ordered a Mai Tai and a Blue Hawaiian. My friend ordered a Chi Chi which was a great balance of sweet and nutty. The downsides? I ordered the shrimp and steak combo, and while the shrimp was great, the steak was flavorless. I had to pour a lot of salt and pepper to give it additional flavor. For the steak dinners, you also have the choice between soup or salad. I ordered the salad and it wasn't for me. It was drenched in thousand island dressing and had a lot of beets (but to be fair our server did warn us about the beets beforehand). Got in on a busy Saturday with no reservations. (Birthday luck) The first time I went to Damon's was for a friend's birthday. We revisited because I was obsessed with their baked potato. Sadly on my birthday it was cold and dry. For some strange reason our food was not great that evening. The new york steak was beyond fatty And very salty. The best thing was the ground steak (burger patty) but that also was over salted. Our luck ran out because the pineapple for whip machine broke down as they served our cup. Visiting here this time is bit disappointed compared to the first time visiting because of the service. The food tastes still good, but our server seemed not care for us. The soup was cold, we asked to warm it up, and when the soup's back, it's still cold. We also asked more butter, and she was like "you don't need butter." We ordered garlic breads, and to be honest, Damon's garlic breads are less than decent. That's why we asked more butter(did not say the reason though), but the server gave us her attitude with "You already have butter on breads." Surprised that she thought we don't know that (ha-ha.). I understand it's busy night on weekend, but... I didn't come here for this I guess? Steak's still good, but that night, the server kinda ruined our excitement. Even did not hear her name, so I don't know who she is, but I hope not to get her for my table for the next time IF I visit there next time.
