What a great experience overall on our first visit to The Mercantile Chophouse. We were celebrating a birthday and had six people in our group. We were seated promptly for our Friday night, 6:30pm reservation. Tables were well spaced and never felt cramped. We only ordered the bread basket, You Knead This, as an appetizer; opting for salads to start the meal. The Merc, The Chopped and The Grilled Caesar were liked by all. I personally had the Chopped and it had a great mix of texture and flavors with candied pecans, pickled onions, mandarin oranges and a sweet poppyseed dressing. All six of us ordered steaks, two ribeyes, three filets and one sirloin. All were cooked perfectly ranging from rare to well done. They were well seasoned and most of us chose the Gorgonzola Bacon Butter which was a nice addition. The Brussel Sprout appetizer is a huge crowd favorite, but the side dish is only charred. However, you can request that they prepare them the same way as the appetizer. They were delicious and so were the Au Gratin Potatoes, which were baked in their own little metal crock. Dessert finished up with a Key Lime Crème Brûlée that was delicately flavored with a light touch of lime. We also had a Brownie Sundae that was delicious as expected. A friend of mine told me about The Mercantile Chophouse one day. I have never heard of it but the way they gushed about how wonderful the food was made me excited to try it as soon as possible. Luckily for me, my mom's 83rd birthday was coming up so we had a reason to celebrate and she was more than happy to celebrate her birthday dinner with family here. I came hungry because I was prepared to indulge and I am so glad I did. I ordered a small salad instead of an appetizer to start. The Merc salad sounded delicious and it's served with a pomegranate vinaigrette that was perfect. For my entrée, I ordered the petite filet mignon, au gratin potatoes, and the green beans. I probably could have left off the green beans, but I'm so happy I got them because they were amazing as well. Perfectly tender and seasoned. Speaking of seasoning, everything on my plate was perfectly seasoned. There were salt and pepper grinders on the table, but I did not need them at all. My steak was cooked to a perfect medium as I had asked, the au gratin potatoes were tender, creamy and cheesy and I already mentioned how perfectly cooked my green beans were. Normally, we all share a bite of food from our plates that is different from what we ordered however my food was so good I didn't want to share. My husband offered me a bite of his Brussels sprouts and they were SO SO good I might need to get those the next time, but I didn't share my green beans with anyone! After dinner, we ordered a Key Lime crème brûlée which was delightfully bright and the perfect ending to our wonderful dinner. Based on online reviews, we decided to give this restaurant a try for our wedding anniversary dinner. They accept reservations, which I highly recommend due to its popularity and limited seating. Street parking is limited, and we were fortunate to find a spot very close by. There is a bar and another restaurant competing during evening hours for these spots, so inquire with the restaurant when making your reservation about overflow parking. There is a financial office behind the restaurant with lots of parking since they're closed in the evening, but check with the restaurant first if that's okay to park there. We were promptly greeted upon entering and our reservation was in order. We were shown to our table, and ice water was already in place waiting for us. I'm already impressed. Our server Kelsey welcomed us and asked if we wanted anything besides water to drink as we looked over the menus, but we were fine with water. We don't drink alcohol, but I can tell you that the separate drink menu lists about 5 beers, quite a few cocktails, and what appears to be a long list of wines. As for non-alcoholic beverages, they have Pepsi products and both sweet and unsweetened iced tea. Menus were done very nicely with a hardback cover as you might expect for an upscale restaurant. We had looked at the menu online prior to our visit, and I decided to go with the 14oz. Ribeye, which came with one side or for an additional $1 I could upgrade to a premium side. Mashed potatoes would have paired fine with a ribeye, but I decided to splurge and spend the extra dollar for the baked potato. Now, to get that potato "loaded" it was another $2. I didn't catch that note, but it's there. I don't think a dollop of butter and sour cream warrants $2 but not worth a star deduction. My wife ordered the Beef Tenderloin Risotto. I also ordered a small Ceasar salad, and my wife ordered a cup of the soup de jour. The restaurant's ambience was top-notch in my opinion. Clean, comfortable, and well-appointed. Background music was crooners like Tony Bennett and Michael Bublé at a volume that made it very easy to have a conversation with others without having to shout (see my review on River Birch Lodge). There is seating at the bar, and my guess is the seats are first come, first served. Our soup and salads came out first, and we had time to enjoy them at a comfortable pace before Kelsey came to clear the empty plates and bring out our entrees. I hate being halfway through my starter and then here comes the main meal. My ribeye was cooked perfectly with excellent flavor, and the baked potato was huge. My wife told me her dish was excellent as well. Kelsey came by several times to check up on us. All the plates brought out had a simple, clean presentation. We were too stuffed for dessert, but Kelsey surprised us with a scoop of ice cream nicely dressed in a stainless-steel cup topped with whip cream and a marigold accompanied by 2 spoons. It was placed on a larger plate with "Happy Anniversary" written in caramel (It was too pretty to mess up so I never checked if it was caramel). Thank you Kelsey. As for prices, their menu is online, but their salads are around $10, starters in the mid-teens, and entrees start at $18 with chops starting at $25. I am soooo close to giving this spot a 5 - there's only a couple of tweaks and this meal would have been perfect. Firstly, the parking situation is dire. Especially during rush hour. So make sure you arrive a few minutes early for your reservation just for parking sake. The space, however, is beautiful inside. Very roomy and dark, romantic vibes. I also love the little fireplace along the long table in the front. Our service was also exceptional. Our waiter made great recommendations and was very accommodating. Isaac was a true gem. The food was really outstanding for a steakhouse in little ol King. We started with bread service but they served it with cold butter which we all know won't spread well. Easy enough fix. The pot roast nachos could have used more cheese, namely a melty cheese but the roast was cooked expertly. So tender and juicy. The rest of our group thought the calamari was overcooked but I didn't mind it. The crab dip was my favorite app, perfect in every way. My ribeye with Mac and cheese and collard greens was superb. The steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The Mac and cheese was creamy and the collards had a kick to it that I enjoyed. I liked the brownie dessert but it wasn't anything special. My blood orange margarita was also very good. Overall I highly recommend The Mercantile if you want to eat somewhere off the beaten path. We had heard about this newish restaurant in King but no one elaborated about how good the food was and how fun the experience is there. When we walked in for dinner it was crowded so we sat at the bar and ate our dinner. As it turned out this was the place to be. The bartender is quite good at his craft. It was fun to see him make and Old Fashioned with the fanfare of the smoked drink under glass. Then someone ordered a cherry Manhatten with a smokey bubble in the glass which popped when presented. I was impressed as I had never seen that technique before. I'm totally ordering again next time I come! Behind me was a long table and on top shooting flames enclosed in a long glass fireplace. Really quite a centerpiece with people dining around each side of it. I wanna bring my friends and sit in front of it, so cool! I ordered a petite filet that was tender and delicious, just the right size when you don't want a huge meal. I ordered a grilled romaine stock as a side. It was better than Ive had in the past. Lightly oiled and grilled not charred. I ordered a baked potato as my side to go w my filet. Quite pleased w my choices. The environment is cozy and the staff and guests are friendly. This old building has been revived into a beautiful small space, with a dark, swanky decor that just feels rich. The staff are very attentive and top notch. The full bar offers cocktail specials, a large wine selection, but not much to offer for the beer drinkers. The menu is ala carte and pricey, so be prepared. Hands down one of the best steakhouses I've ever been to! My steak was cooked to absolute perfection and I lovedddd the salt rub on the outside. The Mac and cheese was to die for. I originally didn't order any but after trying a bite of my husbands I had to get a side for myself! I also started with a wedge salad that had a delicious homemade ranch. For dessert we chose the crème brûlée which was the perfect ending to our celebratory dinner. My friend and I have wanted to try this restaurant for months. We finally made it to Mercantile. We sat at the bar and our bartender Alex was very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. The filet and ribeye were both extremely flavorful and cooked to perfection. We added the Brussels and the au gratin potatoes. Not pictured I brought home a side of Mac and cheese to have with my leftovers. I have to be honest the Mac and cheese wasn't hitting on much BUT everything else was superb! The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful! The accents, decor, plates- the gold silverware. Recently tried this restaurant for the first time while passing through and (seated w/o a reservationand am so glad we did! I had the filet and my husband had the ribeye. Both were delicious! My filet (med.rare) had a wonderfully almost smoked flavor and the meat was top quality and aged. They have a shop next door for purchasing meats too. Service was fine - specials were rattled off quickly, we had to have them repeated several times and even then we still couldn't remember everything (we had some some seniors in our party and being hard of hearing, combined with bad short term memory, a verbal recitation of the specials wasn't ideal). Perhaps a written list of specials would have helped. Everything is a la carte, so choose wisely. The various beef cuts we got were good. One person in our party thought their order of grilled shrimp seemed overcooked, rubbery, and over-seasoned. Seating was comfortable - we were in a booth. First time visitor to The Mercantile Chophouse. What's not to love? The restaurant is very tastefully decorated, beautiful wallpaper, not detail overlooked, from the linens to the silverware. The hostess, Abby, was top notch and professional despite some walk in patrons, acting a bit "more"than was necessary. I observed Abby, helping to clear tables and keep everything running smoothly. I started out with the Merch salad, fresh and chilled. One in our party had the wedge, and also very fresh. My ribeye was cooked perfectly at medium rare. And the two petite filets were reported to be well seasoned and also right on point. Our waiter, Issac, was observant, but never intrusive. An excellent experience. Will we be repeat customers? I'm going to give it to you straight. I think they are still working out some kinks which is totally to be expected. That being said, did not have a 5 star experience so can't give 5 stars. The service was VERY good. My parents really enjoyed their steaks. Mine was overcooked to the point of well done and I ordered medium. I didn't send it back due to grace and I didn't want them to eat the cost of my meat so I was okay with it. But kitchen needs trained better. NOW to the oddest thing but not surprising. I'm not sure if this restaurant planned to be this small, I heard something about one of the restaurants not being able to open the upper floor due to construction issues/code but it might have been the one across the street or down the street (bar) not sure. But it might have had 15 tables if that. A couple of the tables are for big parties which are stuck in between the other parties. It is LOUD with music I didn't hear or couldn't hear. They put a suggested "time limit" on your dinner and you have to really eat fast if you are a couple and couples sometimes are the slowest in restaurants just due to being a couple whether friends or romantic. I will enclose the suggested eating times in my pictures when I add later tonight or tommorow. So NOT a first date kind of place if you want to linger because you will feel the pressure. I get it. They need to turn their tables to make money. Hostesses were professionally dressed and kind. Cozy vibe. Decorating is great in my opinion. Didn't try any drinks or alcohol but presentation was done very well. And wow! A restaurant that does the forks right :) I didn't find the food extraordinary. I would put it somewhere between a 3 Bulls in Clemmons and a Greensboro type Flemings. Definitely decent meat although hard to tell with mine I did appreciate they gave me a discount. Again, I gave 4 stars as they just opened a couple weeks ago and I imagine are still working out the kinks. Bread plate seemed high for 4 rolls. Nothing extraordinary, honestly skippable. Baked potatoes were cooked right and yum. Desserts were creative. Kudos to them for not doing what everyone else does. Overall a mixed bag at the moment. Try it yourself and see what you think. If you come later then we did. Parking can be an issue. King needs to learn you can't over build your infrastructure. I can't believe one person on the board isn't from a larger city. Even though its not a fair comparison I will say its a thousand times better than the restaurant across the street. Save your money and come here. I'll add photos when I have a chance. read more

Appetizers of artisan bread with boursin and the shrimp w/soy, siracha soba & edamame were very flavorful. Salads were crisp and fresh. Entrees of ribeyes and filet mignon were perfectly cooked and such awesome taste!!! Sides of collards, broccolini and cheese grits were all perfection. The apple crisp with old fashioned oats and ice cream topped off the finest meal we e had in quite sometime. Our waiter Issac was personable, very knowledgeable and most helpful. The cocktails of Old Fashion & Cucumber/gin lemonade were VERY good! The interior is so very well done with attention to beautiful wood panels leather and brass. We'll definitely be back! read more
