We were VERY pleased with the work performed!! Dan and his crew completed the expansion of our dining area and added a large pantry and an entertainment center in the family room. All the work (much of it custom) was done professionally, neatly, on time, and within our budget!! We felt very comfortable opening up the house to them to do work when we weren't there. We are pretty handy and Dan was willing to work with us on the portions of the project we were able to handle ourselves! This saved us $$ and helped us feel we were a part of the end result. We had another major renovation on a second house we were unable to move forward on because of funding availability. We had the full plans and we were looking forward to working with Dan and Debbie again. They are very easy to communicate with and were willing to meet with our designer to give us a bid that covered the improvements. Even though we were unable to complete this project, the planning process and dreams of the completed project were fun to go through with them. We would highly recommend Daniel Mackey Construction to others and DEFINITELY use them again for any future work we need! read more

We've had the Mackeys do two different remodels for us: A full master bedroom and bathroom suite and then also various small projects to improve our guest house. We are very happy with their work and would happily hire them again. On all our projects, they have been consistently on-time, on-budget, and on-call. When unexpected issues arise, they let us know quickly and helped problem solve solutions. All the while, they designed solutions that are modern in execution, but match the arts and craft style of our 90+ year-old home. We had used Daniel Mackey and his team for the design process of our remodel and had actually planned to use him for the construction part, but more on that later. To say the least, we were disappointed by the entire process and poor communication. The scope of the project involved a major remodel of the master bedroom and the kitchen and dining area. During the design process, we repeated ourselves on numerous occasions what budget we had in mind, but at no point did Daniel or his team properly communicate whether the concepts we had in mind were within the budget. In addition, we were the ones maintaining the project schedule and pushing Daniel to speak to the next steps of the design process. He would typically respond with a "Yeah, that's probably the next thing you should do," rather than having his team or himself guide us through the design process. And when we finally came to a design that we thought was acceptable, he provided us an estimate of the remodel that was twice our stated budget. What was worse was when we asked for ways to reduce costs in order for the project to be within our budget, he would not provide us with a very basic itemized list that would allow for us to appropriately determine what aspects of the remodel we did not need included. Unfortunately, due to a poor working relationship, we had to part ways. We paid in full for the design process, but the drawings he provided us with were inadequate, and we soon discovered that his design ideas were not considered great. We ended up hiring a separate architect who admonished his drawings and had to basically start from scratch. The architect also said that his designs lacked a lot of straightforward design sense with regards to proper work flow in the kitchen and spacing in the bathroom. Moreover, the dimensions on his drawings were incorrect and they lacked a lot of the detail, including entire sheets, that the city would have required for permits. What I found the most disconcerting was when we did part ways, he became extremely unprofessional and infuriated. He yelled at me stating that "he had been doing this since the day I was born and I had no idea what I was talking about. He did not need to listen to me." Honestly, I would stay away from design-and-build firms, especially Daniel Mackey. We were able to hire a separate architect and a contractor, who we are happy with, for half the price. True, there is more legwork you would have to do on your own, but we found it to be much better to have experts at designing and building separately, rather than a single person who is not even considered mediocre at either. In conclusion, I would stay away from Daniel Mackey Construction for his lack of professionalism, high prices, poor designs, poor communication skills, and poor project management abilities. read more

Mackey Construction has done a few jobs for us, and we love their work. The first time we had them out, we needed to vent our dryer in the garage. It seemed like a small task, until we realized that the placement of the dryer made that nearly impossible. Dan Mackey worked with us to create a new laundry area in the garage with built-in cabinets, counters and a laundry sink, plus created a new office area where the old washer/dryer used to stand. At the same time, we had them convert us to tankless water heaters, and Dan went out of his way to find us the electrical tankless we wanted to tie into our existing solar electric system. They handled all the plumbing, electrical and gas connections beautifully, worked with us on all stages of the design, and we ended up with both an office and laundry room that 4 years later are still pleasant and functional. After the fantastic job they did with the laundry/office project, we called Dan when we wanted to add insulation under our 100 yr old home. We have no subfloor in our home, and it has a significant crawlspace underneath it, leading to some very cold floors in the winter time. With a new baby crawling around, we wanted more insulation under there, and Dan helped us choose the right kind of insulation for our needs and oversaw the entire installation process. A couple years later we decided to add a drop-down attic access ladder in the kitchen and re-do the attic insulation at the same time, and once again we called Mackey Construction to do the job. The finished product looks great, works well, and our energy usage for heating and cooling has dropped significantly after both insulation projects. For every job we've had Mackey Construction do, they have been on-time, clear and up front about the budget, and available to help with any questions that come up during or even after the process. The team is always professional and friendly, and we've decided that we want to use the Mackeys again for any future home improvement projects. read more

We have had Daniel Mackey Construction do two jobs for us and both times, he and his crew did decent work and with consideration for our needs and desires. The first job was rebuilding a fence in our yard and it was done perfectly and much sturdier than our previous fence that had cost a small fortune but had not been done correctly. This fence looks great! The most recent was on our kitchen and family room. We had water & hidden mold damage from a dishwasher that had been improperly installed 4 years ago and with no warning, we walked into our kitchen one morning in early August and the floor was suddenly bucked. Mr. Mackey came over promptly and surveyed what was going on, took measurements, worked with our insurance, and replaced our floors throughout, replaced a section of wall that was damaged, rebuilt sections of our cabinets that had been affected by the water & mold damage, installed our new dishwasher and other appliances, and did his part of the work all within the timeframe he had quoted. We did have some issues with the flooring we had selected after it was installed and Mr. Mackey came over to inspect and fix the issues. He stated that because the flooring was a European flooring, they use a different form of glue that is not meant to be permanent. After trying to remedy the problem, he stated that IF it happens again with bubbles, that we could order (and pay for) a different flooring material and they would reinstall it at no cost for the labor. Well, we have more bubbles and so it does not look as nice as it should. Also, there is a ridge under the flooring in front of the oven/stove area that I mentioned to him and he said there was nothing that could be done about that. However, that was never there before and so we believe it was not done properly. We are not in the position to purchase more flooring or deal with the hassles of having to empty out our kitchen and family room in order to install new flooring. I have to say that the work they did on the cabinetry and saving our granite countertops was superior but the flooring is still an issue. read more

We have used Daniel Mackey Construction for several projects, small and large, over the past 12 years and have always been more than pleased. Dan Mackey is competent, honest, easy to communicate with and very customer-oriented. He runs a medium size company with crews of both employees and subs. He is always personally available, often on-site and occasionally he actually works hands-on. Projects he has completed for us have all been on-time and on-budget (except, of course, for the changes WE have made). Punch-list items are handled promptly. We trust Dan's work and pricing explicitly and no longer even get other bids for our projects. read more

We contacted Dan Mackey regarding a fence in our yard that went down and had to be replaced before we got another dog. We were very pleased with his quick response to our call and his bid for the job was more than fair. He gave us several options for repair and replacing sections. Told us up front what a total replacement would cost and options for saving money if we decided to use some of the existing boards that were still in good condition. His workers arrived on the scheduled date and time, were polite, cleaned up after themselves, and the end result was a beautiful fence as promised. We would highly recommend Daniel Mackey Construction to anyone who is needing fence work done or remodeling. We have seen one of his remodels and were very impressed. I only wish we had known about his company before we had our last remodel job because I am sure we would have been a lot happier had Mackey Construction done the work.
