This is a situation where I have to remind myself that a three star review just means "A-OK." And that's exactly what my meal at Danny's was. I stopped in on my way from Texas to Colorado based on Yelp reviews - ordered the ribs with potato salad and mashed potatoes. The ribs had good flavor, but were pretty tough - I do like that they served the meal with two kinds of BBQ sauce, the lighter of which I really enjoyed. Both versions of potatoes were just okay - I had a lot left over, but neither was worth taking for leftovers. I had no problems with the service - the woman who took care of me was friendly and efficient, and another man working there checked up on me when she was busy. So, Danny's is A-OK! I'm not sure how Carlsbad's BBQ scene is, but I expect you could do way worse than Danny's. read more

Apparently this is the only place open in town in Carlsbad that is open on a Saturday for dinner (that is not fast food, or the one fancy-pants place in town) and it is BUSTLIN'. I think Danny's Place is my favorite of the three BBQ's that I am familiar with in the Carlsbad area. We went around lunch time here and I ordered myself a pulled pork sandwich which was really good! I wasn't sure what to expect but the bbq sauce was a mildly sweet and savory. I also had a few sides: fries, coleslaw, beans. but the sandwich definitely made the meal! read more

Three stars based on the food but two stars for service. Not our first choice for dinner in Carlsbad but on a Sunday you are limited to what is actually open. This place had lots of cars parked in front so we took the chance. Things started off poorly with the hostess (owner?) pointing to a specific table across the dining room as ours and to go sit there. If you want us in a specific table, take 30 seconds to walk us over to it. Geesh. She did that all night long too and if folks wanted to sit somewhere else it was a semi big deal to get her approval. Our server was decent but frequently disappeared for long periods of time and dropped off our receipt without asking if we wanted dessert. We did in fact but opted to go elsewhere to find it. BTW also not easy to do on a Sunday night in Carlsbad. Our food was good though. My wife and I each got the two meat mix plate and chose four different meats to share. The smoked turkey was awesome and best without any sauce. The pork was excellent especially with the sweet sauce. The brisket was a strong third with the smokey sauce. The ribs were a distant last place and the weakest of the bunch. The meat came off the bone easy enough but didn't quite taste right to us. Oh big BTW, no beer here. Another anomaly but not just limited to Carlsbad this time. We found many restaurants that didn't serve beer throughout Eastern New Mexico on our trip. read more

After visiting the Carlsbad Caverns, we came here with some family on a Saturday around 2pm. They were busy, but our group of 7 waited less than 20 minutes. This is a very casual, laid back establishment with friendly staff and satisfactory service. They have great options for kids and have no problems making substitutions on your meal. I ordered the choice of 2 meats dinner plate with brisket and pork spare ribs with fried okra and coleslaw as sides (around $14). While the meat was delicious, I'm not the biggest fan of sweet BBQ. However, I had a taste of the sausage which balanced out the sweetness of all the other BBQ. The variety of BBQ is great. The sides were good, but I tried some of the potato salad and it's definitelty just as good...maybe even a little better than the coleslaw in my book. This is a very family friendly restaurant that does not disappoint. Stop by if you're in the Carlsbad area! read more

I'm from California, which isn't really known for good barbecue, so I didn't really know what to expect when I tried out Danny's Place. Because of this, I was pleasantly surprised to really enjoy the food here! I'm even tempted to say this is some of the best barbecue I've had, but that wouldn't mean much because I haven't had that much to begin with. I ordered the small plate of brisket with a side of coleslaw, which came with bread. Even though this was a small order, I could barely finish half of my order. The small came with 4 slices of brisket, and even though I loved it I couldn't finish more than two pieces! It had a delicious smokey flavor, and combined with the house barbecue sauce it was great. What really blew me away, though, was the coleslaw. It was so creamy, and the lettuce was crisp and fresh. The bread, which was fried in butter making it crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, was also a nice addition. Loved Danny's, and as my first barbecue joint it definitely set a high bar. read more

Nicely done brisket and smoked turkey. Heard the okra was pretty good as was the sausage. BBQ sauce had just a slight ping which I like. Really enjoyed the cole slaw because it wasn't too wet or creamy and sweet. Pinto beans could be a bit smokier though was only drawback but still had decent flavor. Would recommend for a nice spot after the caverns. But note there's no alcohol....but I might have missed that in reading other reviews-was in a hurry. read more

Usually you head to a BBQ place and you expect some boring white bread. This place gives you sugared bread. You heard that right. It was such a delightful surprise, I just had to write about it! For my BBQ I tried ribs and brisket. The BBQ tasted great, the meat was tender and cooked well. I wish they had a spicy sauce, they only have sweet or vinegar BBQ sauce. The sweet sauce tastes like any other BBQ sauce out there. The vinegar sauce tastes like BBQ sauce mixed with sweet and sour sauce. For the sides, I chose beans and cole slaw, my usual go to sides. The beans were rather plain, was just refried beans. I added sweet BBQ sauce into it to make them more flavorful but I wasn't a fan. The cole slaw was a-okay. Overall the place offers quality meat and bread. If they had spicy sauce and better sides, it would be five star. read more

Great BBQ in this area. We were looking for a place to have dinner after leaving Carlsbad Caverns and before returning to El Paso (yes, it's a bit of a drive back) but Danny's Place was well worth the effort. We were greeted by a very nice lady who chatted with us about the area. Then our server helped us through the menu. We went for the pulled pork . . . Excellent! Tender with "put your own sauce" on the side. Had a side salad with the meal (needed some greens). The buttered bread was a real treat and taking our time to enjoy the meal didn't bother anyone. There is nothing good about eating at Danny's except maybe the help. Oh yeah, Danny's has the all American food that everyone loves to eat, but when it comes down to healthy eating choices, No. If you have any kind of food allergies, gluten intolerance, pre-diabetes, or are a diabetic, autoimmune disorders, there is nothing for you to eat or drink in this place. There is no real food in this restaurant. Everything is processed carbs and fake foods. Good ole sugary drinks.. yep, plenty of those. Everything has sugar in it or is sugar or breaks down to be sugar. So you are basically eating sugar, sugar and sugar. Meat that is processed and probably has all those hormones and antibiotics that you don't want in your system. Aside from being a good ole place to eat, there is nothing good about eating the food at Danny's. Not if you want to eat real food and be good to your body so you don't end up with diabetes, autoimmune disorders and heart disease or stroke. read more

I always eat here at least once when I go to work in Carlsbad. I've had their brisket, sausage, and chicken tenders. All have been extremely tasty. Service is always very welcoming and prompt. Haven't been disappointed yet after coming here the past 3 years. read more

The food was ok, I would give 3.5 stars to the food. What gets it 2 stars was mostly due to the service we received. They were missing food items from our order. Some orders will come with the bread but some would not. When we notify the waitress, she looks super annoyed by us and just dropped the bread to us without any sign of apologies. If we never tell her, she will never bring them over. We had to constantly asked for the waitress to come over, but she would tell us to wait and never come back after. The waitress also never stop by even once to our table throughout the whole dinner to see if we need anything (which we did because they never gave us the BBQ sauce). We had to get the attention of other waitress to get what we needed. The waitress we had really deserves 0 tip from us. Please train the staffs better. read more

Sub par ribs. If you like the sauce your going to love the ribs but they have no real flavor of their own and are packed with gristle and cartilage. The brisket was by far he worst broker I've ever had in my life, almost tasted like roast beef! It was dry and flavorless, would never recommend this to anyone Pulled pork sandwich was good, was the only thing that came out of their kitchen that I enjoyed besides the iced tea. Went here because it was called the best BBQ in the state but I guess that doesn't say much about New Mexico BBQ. Would not recommend coming here, save your money and eat at a gas station. read more

We have been eating at Danny's even before they changed from being a Dairy Queen, and we are usually very happy with our meals. However in the last few years every time we go on Sundays for lunch our food is barely lukewarm. We usually have 3 in our party and everyone's food is that way even ordering different meats. I did send my food back and when the server brought it out she said this should be nice and hot, it was no different from the food I sent back. I don't understand how they can keep serving food that is barely lukewarm and customers don't have an issue with it, if meat isn't kept or served at certain temperature you can get sick. We aren't just talking about the meats but the beans too, and usually the fries. It's a shame because we really like the food here, but until the temperature of the food is corrected I don't believe we will be back. Please fix the food temperature issue. read more

I don't give five stars out often but this BBQ is terrific! We came late (2 pm lunch) which is the best time to come as you can find a table and get great service. Being from Seattle, I loved that u could order sweet tea and 1/2 and 1/2 is perfect sweetness for me. I ordered the rib dinner with sides of OC friend okra and a salad. The ribs were amazing! They offer two types of BBQ sauce - one they make their own that is vinegar based and one molasses based. The best in my opinion is the combination of the two. One of the better choices in Carlsbad, nice folks, quick serve. Not at all fancy, home style "hole in the wall". The town basically caters to roughnecks & oil support crowd, so anything more stylish goes away. Pulled pork was good, the sauce is either sweet bbq or vinegar bbg. Spicy would be a good addition. We stopped here tonight thinking bbq is pretty quick and we could get back on the road. The hostess as borderline rude. The waitress was so new that she had never even had their potato salad and couldn't tell us what kind it was- mustard, mayo, German... our food took forever and wasn't even warm much less hot. The bread on my son's plate looked as if it had been trampled before they put it there. The sausage tasted like cheap rubbery stuff from the from the grocery store, the turkey looked like a breast from the store they sliced up. If I could give it a 0 I would. I'm sure their food is good but we could not give our money to an establishment that treated us with discrimination. My husband is white. My daughter looks white. My mom, son, and I look Mexican. She looked at us and told us we could sit at the table for 4 in the corner (there were 5 of us). I couldn't understand why? Only 25% of the tables were being used and there was no wait at all. When I asked if we could sit at a table that offered more room she said no because it is busy on Sundays. Again, there was plenty of seating and NO WAIT. I could feel the tension and the unwelcoming vibe. We decided to leave rather than to be seated in a corner. The place looked perfect: a crowded local BBQ joint. The forceful lady at the cash register pointed me to a table in the corner. Waiting for the server, I tipped the bottom window-blind open 1/2 inch to see my car, which contained all my luggage and valuables. The cashier lady marched over and snapped the blind shut. I did it again and she marched over and told me not to touch it. The "sun was blinding my customers." I pointed out that the sun had set. She said "we take care of our customers." I pointed out that I, too, was a customer, and told her she could keep her barbecue. I said this without cursing her. I deserve a prize. She is straight out of "Five Easy Pieces." Beware! I did enjoy the secret grins and thumbs-up from her cowering employees when I told her off, though. I feel sorry for anyone who needs a job so badly they have to work with her. read more

It's a non-descript building with bathroom doors that look like they haven't been washed since the place was built. The prices seemed reasonable and portions sizeable, but a forty minute wait for chicken tenders , pork sandwich and grilled cheese when your hungry and tired is too much. The place was busy, but not packed when we got there. I left a twenty for the fountain drinks on the register after waiting a few minutes, since apparently no one able or willing to man the the cash register when we were walking without food. We had taken a seat in the corner, since we were not "seated" and had to be reseated since we were a party of four and were at a table for six. They might want to shift their focus from seat maximization to turnaround time maximization. read more

As a resident of Texas, I'm afraid that I might have my drivers license revoked when I cross the NM-TX border to get back home because this was not bbq. It was sacrilegious of me to even try it out. Even the worst bbq in Tx is hands-down better than Danny's. On top of that, you have to deal with very grumpy and unfriendly service. read more
