He pinpointed the problem on my cargo van by patiently looking for it. He just repairs parts that need repairing. Elsewhere, I have been in situations, even at dealerships, where they kept piling up parts that need fixing. After heeding their "advice," the original problem was still there. We have taken our vehicles to Dan's before, only because a friend said he was worth it. The first time, he held our car for months and did nothing. When we finally got our car back, they made sure we didn't notice the new dent until we got home. The 2nd time we brought in a vehicle, the steering needed immediate attention. Dan claimed he drove it and told her she was wrong. We demanded that he take it out of his lot and try again. When he did, he happen to notice that the steering gearbox needed replacing. Which is what he fought us on previously. Maybe he didn't like the idea of a woman being correct. So we had the steering gearbox replaced with a "new" part. Only to find out less than a year later, from another mechanic. That the "new" gearbox needs replacing, because it was worn out and poorly reassembled. Conclusion Dan's "superior" auto is a misogynistic scam artist. We will never go back to this "mechanic" again. read more

DO NOT GO HERE!!! PLEASE READ MY REVIEW!!! If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. I towed my 2004 Dodge Neon here in 2011 to replace my head and my car is a 4 cylinder. At this point, it wouldn't start anymore so I had to tow it. They told me it would take about 10 days to repair. In the end, it took about a month to get my car back. They charged me $1700 for labor and $600 for parts. Later I found out this was a complete rip off. Less than 2 years later in late 2011, my engine light was back on again. My dad's friend who is a long-time mechanic looked at my car and told me my head needed to be replaced AGAIN. I only put less than 20K miles on my car since it was repaired in 2011. Long story short, Dan's Superior Automotive (what a joke) did a really crappy job at REBUILDING the head. They didn't replace it, they rebuilt it all wrong. All 4 cylinders leaked and weren't seated properly. Dan's charged me for the head and all the parts separately (unheard of) instead of all together like normal mechanic shops do. Needless to say this time around, I paid less than half of what I paid Dan's for this to get fixed the right way and it only took a week to fix. I wish I did this the first time, but my car wouldn't start so it was easier to take it somewhere local (my dad's friend lives in the East Bay). SO PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS!! IF YOU LOVE YOUR CAR AND YOU WANT IT TO RUN RIGHT, DO NOT TAKE IT TO DAN'S CRAPPY AUTOMOTIVE! At the time I was 22, going to Sonoma State, paying my way though college and other expenses and I feel like I was taken advantage of and I want to warn everyone so this doesn't happen to you too. I wonder how many other young women they have taken advantage of. Before I took my car here, I did read the reviews on Yelp and they seemed honest and seemed like a good mechanic shop. I literally drove off the freeway and into this place on our way out of town on a camping trip. A cardboard box had flown out of a pickup truck into the fast lane leaving me no choice at that moment but to run right over it. Fortunately for all involved (my 6 year old was in the car) the box had a sleeping bag in it and wasn't filled with heavy solid things but the engine started making a whirring/vibrating noise a minute later. If it hadn't been for this place our camping trip may have been ruined. I've had a Yelp account for a while and I've never felt compelled to write out a review until my experience here! Dan and Susan not only took care of our car but they also took care of four girls on a budget with hundreds more miles to go on a big road trip. Their auto shop made up for the unpleasant experience of our car refusing to accelerate on a busy freeway. First of all, his wife was so welcoming! Which was wonderful since we knew nothing about cars or what to expect about the cost of services or parts to fix ours. Also, Dan took his time to explain thoroughly the problem until we understood, all without spouting car jargon we couldn't follow or making us feel dumb. We could tell he was honest right off the bat because he really wanted us to understand the issue and the possible solutions. Finally, he fixed the problem so fast! We didn't have to wait very long and the price he gave us was so reasonable we had to ask a couple times to make sure we heard it right. My experiences at mechanics have ranged from mediocre to bad so I was pessimistically expecting to be ripped off but it was completely the opposite, it ended up being another fun stop on our journey and they went above and beyond to make us feel better about completing our road trip. Since then I've even called to ask Dan about a random car issue just to get his advice and he doled it out freely despite not being near his shop or getting compensation, he really cares! Dan's Superior Auto is that kind of operation: Family. :-) I had a misfire in my Ford truck and not only did Dan's top level diagnostic tool easily dial in exactly where and what it was (when a lesser model elsewhere couldn't), he has so many decades' of continued experience that he had a pretty good idea of the job and explained it in detail to me. Much appreciated, right? Completed ahead of schedule by squeezing me in his jammed schedule. And perfectly done, estimate was spot on and great; AND Susie his wife who is right there taking good care of us, dropped me back and picked me up .. a bit out of her way but that's Dan's Superior Auto and family -- they care enough to go out of their way and its no wonder they have such loyal customers who appreciate them so much! I met Dan through one of their longtime customers who serviced his vehicles at Dan's through his entire small business operation, decades. I bought one of this customer's cargo vans, and the deal went through Dan because the customer and wife were elderly so Dan helped them out (I"m sure he made nothing for doing the deal except probably got his invoice covered and created more goodwill!) I could see by the invoices that it was a very well kept up van by Dan of course for and just had some major work done - lucky me. It was an oldie but goodie and I asked for a bit of favor which he was just fine with. I loved the van and used it well for a few years, and upgraded a bit to my current 4WD truck. Will be bringing it back to Dan and Susie again, even though they're an hour out. I'll make it a trip and enjoy the lovely north bay again -- it'll be great to see Susie and Dan again! I recently took my 1992 Nissan pickup to Dan's when it failed the smog check. Dan was able to quickly identify the problem and got "little truck" back on the road with emissions lower than they had been in years. At the start of the job he gave me a detailed explanation of what the causes of my high emissions might be, and the steps he would take to diagnose the problem. He kept me informed as the work progressed and fixed the problem at a lower cost and in less time than I had expected. Dan exudes honesty and expertise. My mother a mother of 3 and grandmother of 5 had a overheating issue. She took her Saturn to Dan's Superior Auto shop. He : 1) over charged her for parts 200 for a 30 dollar thermostat. 2) he did not fix the issue after 2 weeks the car over heated on the way to Mill valley 3) he replaced parts that were working fine 4) he charged her 1200 didnt fix the issue 5) he never properly tested the car or he would have found out the issue wasnt fixed 6) After seeing the quote I called him on the price gouging and he said he would drop it to 900 but when she picked it up there was more added to her bill bringing it up to 1400. This man is despicable. To knowingly take advantage of a woman 65 years old, A mother, A grandmother. He has no screwpals no pride in his work and no Idea of how fast doing such things will get around in the 21st century. I hope this review makes you think twice and shop around before wasting your time and money at this shop. Oh man Dan's saved me a lot of grief and money. My car failed the smog test (damn Pontiac) and I had to get it fixed quick. I called a bunch of places to get my thermostat fixed and a lot of places were quoting me close to $ 300. I called Dans and the guy was very friendly on the phone, gave me a very good quote and I brought my car in. The place is a little hard to find, but once there everyone was awesome. They fixed my car and even smogged it there at the cheapest rate I could find. I got my car back a few hours later and everything is fine. My "check engine" light came on and this was the first place I went to in order to get a quote for assessing it and fixing it. I know very little about cars and the man who helped me was not very helpful in explaining anything to me. After speaking with him for about 15 minutes he quoted me for nearly $300 without even explaining to me what exactly that cost would give me or knowing what the issue was with my car. I felt that I could find a cheaper price, and even if I couldn't, I'm not one to go with the first place I visit before at least comparing places, so I thanked him for his time and left. As I was leaving he said, "Thanks for the waste of time!" After the disrespectful comment and lack of explanation, I don't feel very welcome there and don't plan on returning. read more

Nice job! Had some engine noise, and a engine light on. They were professional and explained everything to me and diagnosed the issues properly. He even gave me a break on the labor because of multiple items being fixed. I was surprised they had it done the same day.
