On Tuesday morning around 8:00 a.m. I went out of my way to stop by the coffee shop to pick up four banana bread lattes so my coworkers and I could enjoy a treat together. An older woman greeted me and took my order. When I requested four drinks, she responded with "Four?" and loudly called out to another employee that she would need help. I paid and stepped aside to wait. Shortly after, while assisting the customer behind me, the same employee stated aloud, "We just took a large order and it's probably going to be a little bit of a wait." I was very taken aback by this comment. I did not feel that four drinks constituted a large order, nor did I expect it to cause a significant delay. The comment made me feel uncomfortable, as if I were being blamed for slowing down the store or disrupting the flow of service. The younger gentleman working was very kind and professional, repeatedly reassuring her that it was not a big deal and that everything would be fine. Unfortunately, as this is not the most convenient coffee stop for me, being treated this way made the experience disappointing--especially when there are nearby options like Starbucks or Dunkin' where service is consistently friendly and welcoming. Moving forward, I will likely choose those alternatives to avoid starting my day with unnecessary stress or negative interactions.
