A bit hard to find! We heard about this place and after coming to town many times, we never discovered this place. Someone walked us over or we may have not found it. Nice to find a vegan restaurant in Mt.Dora! My first impression is that the prices are a bit high, but the flavors were pretty good. The cafe is small, slightly grungy but clean, and reminds me of my hippie days eating out. Nothing glamorous about the place. The music was too loud and so not inviting as a place to eat. The owner remarked how we can eat outside or take it to go due to the music, which is a new one for us. If I wanted a concert, I can turn my phone loud. If they want people to eat inside, why not make it a bit more desirable to do so? We mentioned this to the owner and though she was sweet about it, it sounded like it was somewhat out of her control. We had the tacos and also the Chickpea salad. The salad needed more dressing in my opinion, maybe a container double the size (2 or 4 oz.) would be good. We asked for a second dressing flavor and got the ginger dressing, which was good. The tacos were pretty good, but when you got to the bottom of the tacos, the flavor seemed to go away. The portions were nice size and the staff were all really kind and smiling. I like to see happy staff at a restaurant. I know that we won't be eating inside again unless the music volume is lowered. This may preclude us from coming back, but then, we do like the vegan options and they are the only eating location in town that offers tasty vegetarian and vegan dishes. I just think they are starting out and testing the waters without getting into a huge lease situation to rent maybe. Or at least that was how it seemed to look to us. If they do well, maybe they would be able to control the music volume and the landlord would make changes for them. Not sure if we would come back. We could find a place that is a bit more conducive to serving food. But, maybe this is a place where you should prefer to use as a carry-out only. After all of this, they should get 3.5 stars, but we will give them the benefit of the doubt, hope they stay in business and will give 4 stars. read more

You ever plan to eat at one place and then end up at another? That's how I found myself heading towards the (Dark &) Light Cafe in Mount Dora. I am grateful for a delicious vegan restaurant in historic Mount Dora. As I get older, I see the benefits of eating cleaner. This restaurant is in what appears to be a small food hall and I only found it because I was following other people. I went with the pretzel portobello sandwich, which was good if also an incredibly messy sandwich to eat. It starts falling apart after the first two bites. Very good, though - avocado, tomato, vegan cheddar cheese - you can taste the quality of the ingredients. Mind you, on a busy weekend it will take a few minutes to get your order because they do get busy and they are making everything fresh. The roasted potatoes served with my sandwich? Tasty, seasoned, and served piping hot. Next time, I will likely go for the jackfruit quesadillas or a lentil burger. Good first impression, if also a slightly messy one. read more

This is a cute cafe located in downtown Mount Dora! Since I have a dairy sensitivity I searched for vegan places, and Dark & Light was the top result! I decided to try their empanadas (the Meatless, Corn and Spinach). All of them were good but the meatless was by far my favorite! If you had told me it was impossible meat I would have said no way, cause it tasted like meat to me! The team here is super sweet and kind. We were so impressed by this cafe! It is located inside of the Mt Dora Marketplace and offers a menu filled with lots of vegan options. The staff was all amazing! So welcoming and it was a pleasure to dine here. The frozen lemonade was the perfect refreshing drink and the veggie burger was delicious! I loved that it was made with veggies instead of soy protein. You can find some options with soy protein but I loved how many options didn't utilize soy protein. Really good food and beverages. We were lucky to find this place and ended up coming back each day of our vacation. They make smoothies and lattes with no sugar added if desired! We stopped by on Saturday because we saw the reviews on Yelp. The place didn't look like much and it was packed solid with people. We decided to take a chance and we are so glad we did. The food was AMAZING!!!!! My favorite was the vegan burrito and I'm not even a vegetarian. We also loved the eggplant panini and beet salad and ginger salad. I would make the drive to Mt. Dora just to come here to eat (about an hour drive). This is a must do dining experience especially for vegetarians, vegans and meat eaters alike. Wow! Definitely the best vegetarian and vegan restaurant in Mt. Dora -- and also one of the best vegan little eateries that we have discovered anywhere (and we travel alot so I'm including places in NYC, LA, etc. when I say that). Many vegan eateries offer a fairly predictable menu but within moments of walking inside, we could tell that the owners take pride in being not only creative, but creating something delicious. My daughter and I had a tough time deciding what to choose but ultimately she went for the all day tofu scramble breakfast and I chose their lone sandwich -- a mouthwatering concoction featuring portobello mushrooms, avocado and a sauce that was absolutely sublime. The tofu scramble was perfectly seasoned and it was accompanied with potatoes, vegan "sausage" and wonderful whole grain bread and jam. The portion was so generous that my daughter took half of it home and continued the deliciousness with the leftovers this morning. Capping off our meal were the frosted lemonades! My daughter selected one infused with coconut. I opted for lavender. Both were sublime. To top it off, my daughter is in a wheelchair so we were delighted to find that not only was it super simple to get from the parking spot into Dark & Light Cafe, but the bathroom was totally accessible -- a rarity in many (dare I say, most) cases. The entrance to this cute, delicious gem is back off the street but it's definitely worth searching out. We stopped in at this restaurant. You order up at the window and it is a rough little dining room. The first thing we got was a mango passion, fruit smoothie and it was awesome. I ordered the street tacos and my husband ordered the lentil burger. Excellent. We also ordered the empanadas. My husband got the veggie one which has a lot of veggie meat in it. He liked mine better and I agreed. The spinach empanada was perfectly seasoned and delicious. We spoke with the owner and he was a wonderful person, and so pleasant. We were blown away by the vibrant flavors and beauty of the plating at this unassuming, humble restaurant. The folks are friendly and patient with your questions, and the service was pretty quick. We had the meatless nachos, the jackfruit quesadilla, and the black bean quesadilla, with the yucca appetizer. The yucca was nicely browned and pillowy soft inside, with a terrific dipping sauce. The nachos were excellent, with three ramekins of sauce (Pico de Gallo, guacamole, and guasacaca) , both the quesadillas were well spiced, and very satisfying portions.
