Daronghua is a staple go-to bakery in the neighborhood for slightly nicer and higher quality Chinese buns and pastries. I love that they have both classic Cantonese bakery items and novelties you don't typically see at other old school Chinatown bakeries. Beyond the milk bread, buns, and flaky pastries, they also sell cakes, tiramisu, and other dessert pastries. I've been very intrigued by the pork floss taro bump cup, which I have yet to try. I ordered my son's birthday taro cake as well as my own birthday durian tiramisu cake from Daronghua. The taro cake had a yellow vanilla sponge with layers of taro inside and taro-flavored cream on the outside. It was so yummy, light, and not too sweet. I also loved the durian tiramisu, which had a palpable but not overwhelming taste of durian. This, too, was so gratifyingly light and creamy. In addition, I've tried a number of their buns. Their taro bun is my favorite, with a generous amount of taro filling. I've also tried their croissant Portuguese tart, which seemed a bit like a gimmick to upcharge at $3 a piece. A classic Portuguese tart with more custard and less pastry dough is way better. Their pineapple roll, which was like a Swiss roll with pineapple jam, was light and fluffy, but only had the slimmest amount of pineapple taste from what I could discern. I'm on the hunt for the best egg tart in NYC and these had great flavor and were on the sweeter side (Portuguese style). HOWEVER, these are minuscule and the filling was scant y'all - I'm talking like a quarter inch of filling in an egg tart that's already smaller than the palm of my hand. I expect more for $3 especially as you can get equally good, hefty egg tarts in the same price range or cheaper (e.g, xin fa bakery 1.75, Na Tart 3.25) Service is very quick here and there's tables inside to stop and eat (usually taken by Chinese uncs and aunties tho lol). This bakery has been around for a while. I'm sure they changed owners many times. The place is a bit dingy and has lots of people coming and out. This review is for the pineapple bun only. What can I say? It was hard and not sweet. Very underwhelming. read more

I got a bun from Daronghua Bakery a few month ago. It was fresh and tasty. They got a variety of baked breads, pastries, cake and drinks that you typically find at a Chinese bakery. I haven't tried anything else yet from their menu but given how often I am in the area, I am definitely interested in trying others. As other have said, Daronghua is a bit more modern than the other bakeries in Chinatown but about the same size of space as other bakeries in the area. It is a fairly new establishment in the area. Excellent traditional Chinatown bakery among a cluster of several bakeries on Grand Street. They offer some of the lowest prices - in most cases lower than their neighbors for fresh Chinese pastries and buns. Of note are their tasty roast pork buns that sell for $2 each which is a less than most of the surrounding bakeries are offering them at. Service is friendly. Limited seating. I was attracted by the sign outside that says buy one drink get a second 50% off. We got 2 drinks, one taro and one passion fruit with boba and a few pastries. The drink was sickeningly sweet without much other flavor, to the point that it was hard to finish. The pastries are pretty good and not too sweet so I would recommend that instead. Cute place. We were so thirsty when we got to Chinatown so I looked for a place that sells drinks and since I haven't been here yet.. def comin to check it out. Very new I guess, modern with a touch of old. We were there in the evening and there was still a good amount of customers. It's in the middle of Grand St.. so very mixed people. We got a large brown sugar bubble tea and a mango slushy. We also shared a large tiramisu. The drinks aren't over sweet, neither was the tiramisu. Not the most authentic cuz it was more like cake than lady fingers but not a big deal. They have baos that you can bring home but we already bought some from our usual place. The only issue was the tall homeless guy who kept coming in and asking for money but he didn't come to our table cuz L is 6'3. And he kept coming in and out after a few minutes. L liked the place and will try the other bakery items when we are there earlier next time. read more
