Double Crispy has stepped up their game with so much competition from other bakeries in Chinatown. It is really convenient for me because it's halfway between my sister's place and the Grand St subway station and I can pick up cakes, pastries, snacks and drinks to bring to my favorite nieces and nephews. My other sister likes grabbing coffee and milk tea from here; iced in the summer and hot in the winter. I like that most of my favorite buns are self-service on the display tables and I will usually grab some char siu, hot dog and ham & egg baos to snack on or have for breakfast over the whole week. If you like egg tarts, there is usually a whole tray of them that you have to ask for them to wrap up for you. They come in the standard baked style and the sugar torched (bruléed) Portuguese style. Fresh is best but if you have to microwave your bao, eat them quick or they turn into rubber. My friend went to NYC and picked up a pineapple bun for me to enjoy from Double Crispy Bakery. I heated it up in my air-fryer, and it was the perfect color and temperature to enjoy. While it had a crispy layer with a nice chew on the inside, I didn't really like anything else about it. It was bland and lacked the milky or buttery flavor I was hoping for. Haven't been to this bakery for a long time. With all the great Chinese bakeries in Chinatown, this one never really comes to mind. However, my friend said that it's her favorite spot for egg tarts, so I had to come back and try again to confirm. Generally, I prefer a puff pastry crust for my Egg Tarts rather than the pie crust-like version here. That was the first negative on their Egg Tart for me. On the quest to find the best egg/po tats in the city, my next stop was Double Crispy Bakery. They stand out in that even though I went close to closing, they somehow were able to keep their po tats warm, and the crust crumbly and fresh. We had 11 people in our party that ate the cake, and there was still almost half of the cake left over. In all honesty, we probably only needed 1 pound (the lady at the counter said we needed 2), but it made for good leftovers. The cake itself was tasty; not too sweet but still had great flavor and was filled with fruit in the layers. This might be low-key the best version I've eve had though I'm almost happy (in a selfish way) that they don't have the lines from the other famous egg tart spots. The Hong Kong style/Dan Tat is a close second but it's still solid. I've gone there just before closing and earlier and it always tastes fresh and delicious with a good egg flavor and a similarly flaky crispy crust. No complaints either with the only better one I know being in Flushing. I've tried other pastries here which are just alright but go here for the specialty.
