I returned to Audrey Bakery & Cafe for the first time since 2021 yesterday, this time bringing along my husband and two kids. The bakery sells many Cantonese bakery classics, but made with higher quality ingredients and sold at higher prices. In addition, they sell many novel flavors, including a pumpkin mochi bun, Japanese pork floss bun, and sweet potato bun. They have a very appealing selection of desserts as well, including macarons, mousses, Swiss roll cakes, Japanese cheesecake, as well as flaky pastry balls. They also sell milk breads, including a Hokkaido milk bread. I'd previously tried one of their birthday cakes at a birthday party. That was beautifully decorated and wonderfully light and fresh. Like most Chinatown cakes, it was mercifully not too sweet and topped with fresh fruit. This time for breakfast we shared the mango bun ($2.50), pineapple taro bun, green tea red bean mochi bun ($2.70), and the taro red bean mochi bun. My. husband also got a large black coffee. All the buns were wonderful. My kids loved the mango bun, which had a light mango cream, as well as teh pineapple taro bun. My favorites were the pineappel taro bun and green tea red bean mochi, which really did have a strong (and invitingly bitter) matcha taste. The mochi added surprising and joyful chewiness to the texture. We would definitely return to try other intriguingly flavored buns. For the classics I would go elsewhere that sell them just as good and at better prices. There were six tables in the back, though they were arranged in three rows of two when we arrived. We had a great view of the cakes being prepared for pre-orders and other freshly baked breads that were being laid out on the floor. read more

stopped at this Chinatown bakery for some much needed calories after a day of to-do's and still the rest of the day to get even more done downtown. the cafe is fairly spacious--a selection of cakes and pastries behind glass display and a number of sweet as well as savory buns, rolls, and sandwiches for easy-grab-n-go meal. there's seating in the back of the cafe. Audrey's also serves a variety of coffee, tea, and juice drinks. there's a nice variety of sandwiches which it made it hard to choose. ended up going with a chicken sandwich--a fried breaded chicken patty with lettuce, tomatoes, and a sauce sandwiches between a soft roll. fresh flavors. it looked good and tasted good. tbh, i am glad i got a sandwich (not some junk food calories) as it was relatively a quick bite to eat as i made my way through the rest of my errands. the service was quick and pleasant. would definitely stop by here again for a quick meal and/or a coffee. not every good meal has to be a long affair but can be short and sweet..err, savory in this case. read more

Chinatown bakeries have definitely expanded in sweets options last time I've visited. This place has been around for a long time and it took the last day of my Invisalign treatment to realize this place existed near my dentist's office. Loved how spacious and clean this place is. All the cake slices, puddings, and rolls are fresh here. Plenty of seating in this bakery and very clean. Was a pitstop before going back to my dentist and was craving for a milk tea small size. The size was cute but I was shocked there was a small size close to the same size of an espresso shot. Order the medium size if you want a basic 10oz sized drink. Wished I could've tried the cakes here as they seem so decadent and delicious. Lots of customers came here because of the various sweets options. It's not in the central areas of Chinatown so many customers were willing to make the extensive walking trip here. Next time I'll be back for the matcha green tea cake slice. My parents ordered a beautiful rose themed, green tea cake from this bakery for a birthday. The cake was beautifully adorned with real roses and baby's breath flowers! The green tea cake was airy and moist with fruit in the middle and some type of small crispy ball, but most of all, it tasted fresh. The cream was mild in sweetness, creamy but not heavy in taste. I feel like the ingredients here are a lot fresher than other Chinese bakeries. The bakery also looked cleaner and a little nicer than the other Chinatown places. Although we didn't try any of the bakery items or other cakes, I had the impression that this bakery is more akin to Paris Baguette (but nicer) than to your standard Chinese bakery. This place is super cute! The staff is very friendly and they have an assortment of desserts like macaroons, birthday cakes, pudding and different types of buns and sandwiches etc. The cakes and desserts are very pretty but don't be fooled -- some are perfect for people who like subtle flavors. It isn't for people who have a sweet tooth. I ordered the Green Tea Mousse Cake which was perfect texture wise that it was creamy and smooth but doesn't have a lot of taste to it. Couldn't really taste the green tea which is a bit disappointing but some of their desserts are a hit or a miss. My sister bought a Tiramisu birthday cake once and it was pretty good so it is definitely a hit or miss at times. I come here on some weekends for their baked buns which are freshest in the morning. Avoid going first thing in the morning when they open, not much of a selection will be available. Plus, they also have a location on Canal St they supply in the morning. Pre-Covid mostly all the buns were not wrapped before going in the case. This was not ideal because there were times the staff had to ask customers not to touch the food with their bare hands. Now everything is wrapped but there are still people that grab with their hands then change their mind and put it back. But this place has always looked clean unlike the more traditional bakeries in Chinatown. The buns here are a mix of traditional and modern. From time to time, they introduce new offerings to keep things fresh. There is one in particular that I will not try again, the chicken pizza. Instead of using tomato sauce they use ketchup and it's sickly sweet. There's also a more American offering that's been around since they opened, a sausage, egg & cheese bun. Just not a fan of the mayo they add. Their coffee is serviceable, but the flavor isn't the same as the other shops in the area. Other than that, most of their baked buns are pretty solid. Their nut buns are a good choice if you don't want anything too sweet or salty. read more

My husband got a green tea mango cake from here for a family birthday dinner at a nearby restaurant. The cake was larger and prettier than I expected. There were large pieces of fruit on top (strawberries, mango, blackberries, grapes, raspberries) and inside the cake (mango). The fruit was fresh, not canned. The cake was fresh, delicious, and light. It was a bit pricey for a Chinatown cake ($37) but the quality was higher and the portion was larger than other Chinese bakeries. They do provide candles and a cake cutter. I would come back here again to buy another birthday cake. FYI - they do take credit cards. read more

Don't get me wrong, I'm not mad, they were not rude to me, I'm just saying the truth. The interior design of the bakery is innovative compared to most in Chinatown, NY. The place looks clean. All the pastries and cakes appear exquisite, especially the cakes. They're almost too pretty to eat. I was happy to find their milk bread, which is a soft and fluffy loaf of bread that I usually find only in Japanese bakeries. The ones in Chinese bakeries are not as fluffy. So I bought it and tried it with others. What a disappointment! We all agree that the bread was too dry and tough but not stale yet, almost there though. The texture and taste was worse than those in other bakeries but more expensive. I'm fond of garlic bread and cheese sticks so I bought one here. It was not good. It taste like it's been out for too long. The ones from Fay Da bakery are much better. We bought other pastries too but they all taste either similar or worse than other places. Overall, everything here looks good, and it's just the looks. It doesn't actually taste that good. The prices are too high for its quality. Similar are available for a better value. read more

There are countless bakeries in Chinatown where you can pick up common Chinese pastries and cream-based, fruit-centered Birthday cakes. However, there aren't many Chinese bakeries that are as innovative and creative like Audrey's. They create the cutest birthday cakes with unique flavor and fruit combinations. For instance, we recently purchased a matcha, mango cake for my father's birthday. Not only was the cake airy and light and easy on the eye - the mango and matcha actually worked well together. My entire family absolutely loved it, with people having seconds - including my little nephew! Mind you, he just had a huge meal prior to the two pieces of fairly large cake. Along with the cake, I also left the bakery with a bag full of buns to munch on for the next few days. While some of the buns tasted like traditional Chinese pastries, none of them were in any shape or form, aesthetically or palatably the same. They're almost ... fusion Chinese buns, with a modern twist. I have yet to sample their drinks, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were just as amazing as their pastries and cakes. read more

The cakes looked so perfect that you can't help but stare at the artwork. I wouldn't want to eat it to destroy the masterpiece, although I knowing my appetite, that feeling would slowly disappear. Hard to give a thorough review since all I bought were two of Audrey Bakery & Cafe's "Healthy Buns." Each bun was not that large but pretty hefty. Visually the bun looked the part of the healthy moniker being both topped and studded with items like sesame seeds, raisins, carrots, and maybe sunflower seeds. Continuing the healthy theme, its off-brown color made me think the bun's bread was a multigrain dough. When cutting the bun open, the above additions are evident as slivers of carrots were embedded in the bread as were raisins and what looked to be sunflower seeds. The bun was very tasty as the above additions added flavor and texture to each bite. I also enjoyed the bun's texture having a balance of crumbly and still being moist. read more

Here you'll find the best drip coffee I've ever had. You can no longer enjoy it inside, which somewhat limits the days on which you do so, but sometimes just knowing it's there is enough. The dry pork floss bun is exquisite. Grab one of each, sit on a bench in Chatham Square, and enjoy them while hoping not to be murdered or shit upon by a pigeon. read more

So many Chinese bakeries cropping in Chinatown Manhattan in 2014, Audrey lured me inside for a try. In scanning their baked goodies selection they, disappointingly, do not carry the staples of Cantonese tradition-- no egg custard tart 蛋 撻 (daan6 taat3/1), and no pineapple bun, and I did not see any pork buns readily available. There were plenty of ample seating available. Food trays and serving tongs are available for self-serve help for the quick and, of course, cheap breakfast and/or lunch. They carry the standard cookie-cutter baked goodies as Chinese ham and egg sandwiches, hot dog buns, etc. There is a takeout menu of their custom cakes to be ordered for special occasions. Semi new bakery with some fresh takes. I wasn't sure at first if I was supposed to be helped or I had to help myself. I ended up just grabbing a tray myself and went at it. The baked goods were behind 'drawers' which you pulled on to open. You have to pull them out full otherwise the drawers would self close in you. There were favorites I had seen before and some interesting takes on others that made me kinda stand there a bit longer than I normally would to digest what I wanted to grab. In the end I just went with what I thought I knew, a pineapple bun and a cold milk tea on a Monday morning. The bun was good, with and understated flavor. I kinda wish it had more coconut flavor and a better filling to be honest. It wasn't as rich as I thought it would be. The milk tea was standard. I wanted it a bit sweeter but otherwise it was neither better or worse than what I would get at any other bakery in the vicinity. Service was friendly and they accept credit cards. read more

Cute little bakery that seemed slightly fancier than normal Chinese bakeries. They had two gorgeous wedding cakes in the window and a nice display of fancy holiday cakes. My spouse and I grabbed a few items, but what stood out to me (and the reason for the 4 stars) was the custard bun. The slightly sweet fluffy white bread and the perfectly light flavor of the custard filling was just what I was hoping for. I ordered a mango mousse cake. The menu and the cake display looks nothing like the cake I ordered. I asked the staffs if this was the right cake, they both told me yes. They only open the lid of the box to show me the cake. I didn't see the full cake until I got home. I feel deceived by this bakery. The cake was probably about an inch high with one strawberry and four poop shape cream holding chocolate plates. The cake was decorated by an amateur that doesn't care at all. It is 80 degrees outside, why would you make poop shape cream on a cake? I guess if the cream melts, it will fill up the empty spaces on the cake. When Audrey first opened in Chinatown, I was excited. Finally, there is an Asian bakery that is not that typical and traditional HK style you normally find in the hood, not that there is anything wrong with typical/traditional HK bakeries. It's just for health conscious. Heavy lards are normally used in the dough for extra flavor, texture and aroma in those bakeries. Audrey advertised, they don't use lards. Their decor was a bit different, more stylish, more cafe-esque, and provided beyond pan-Asian buns/loaves (well, mostly Taiwanese/Japanese/Hong Kong styles of sweet and savory buns). They also have some European style breads that target people with more health conscious. Prices range a bit higher in the hood, but acceptable. It seems, recently, Audrey is making herself a bit overwhelmed for too many fusions of styles they try to offer. First, the size of their buns got noticeably smaller and was not that tasty and fresh as it once be and the presentation-wide, ugh.... Look at this sponge cake sushi roll, the nori can barely stay on the cake....(on the positive side, the mayo in the middle of the roll gone bad next day, so I guess I should take it as a good sign, as it might mean the mayo didn't have too many unwanted additives.) Get better, Audrey. I want to return and have a tasty and presentable bun next time. I cant tell you how many times that I wanted a Japanese hand roll bread but only to be repulsed by its sloppy wrapping. read more

Selected something else from their display window, which were mainly full of colorful looking pastries and desserts. The Guava Mouuse Cup was really good, a mellow hint of guava and not too sweet. The Green Tea Cake Roll with red beans inside; was okay but beans were kind of hard to chew (not fully cooked). Overall, will come back for the Guava Cup, and hopefully they'll have more Taro Balls in stock. read more
