This is one of the oldest and cheapest bakeries in Chinatown. The quality of their products are decent, with my favorite being their peanut mochi, which are still only $1.50 for two. What a deal! The interior is old-school, with worn-out furnishings and that no-frills, local charm you don't see much anymore. You know it's the real deal when most of the customers are Chinese elderly. The moment we walked in, we heard the familiar sound of the classic TVB news intro. It instantly brought back our childhood memories lol iykyk. They offer a variety of traditional Cantonese pastries, like almond cookies (杏仁餅), fortune cakes (發糕), red bean paste pastries (紅豆酥), and more. But they're best known for their peanut and red bean mochi, which costs just $1.50 for two. ＊Coconut Tart I had a sudden craving for a coconut tart (椰撻), even though I grew up favoring egg tarts. The tart is crumbly and buttery, while the filling is slightly chewy, similar to the sweet coconut filling of a cocktail bun (雞尾包). Came here because I heard they have the best handmade chinese mochi in the city, and I was skeptical, but this place is a hidden gem for sure. Having grown up eating this kind of mochi in my chinese family, I knew I was in for a treat when I walked in and saw that this was a very no-frills, community bakery for the elders of Chinatown. The service of course was authentic, too, and I got 2 mochi (one of each kind - peanut and red bean filling) for $3. Took it for a solo picnic and bit into the softest, stretchiest, freshest chinese mochi I've had to date. This place is DEF one of my favorite finds all year and I would go back in a heartbeat. What a gem! I've walked past this place probably hundreds of times and never thought to look past its slightly dusty windows. My loss. However, recently I read that they have delicious mochi, and I decided to wander inside. Truly, the mochi live up to the recommendation--and at a unbeatable prices. They offer two flavors, peanut and red bean, two for $1.25. They are on the smaller size, but you really don't need much to enjoy the richness. They were perfectly soft and gooey, with just the right amount of sweet but not too sweet filling, and oh-so-soft sweet rice, and shredded coconut on the outside. Superb! I also tried what appeared to be a challah-like braided bread for $1.75. This was so light and fluffy, but sweeter than a typical challah. Very well-priced for such an airy loaf! One of the workers was so kind in offering a free egg tart for my son, who was getting fussy while I was perusing the selection. The staff really are wonderfully kind and patient. Not the best egg tart in Chinatown since it has a hard rather than flaky crust--but still delicious custard filling. Came here a couple times in the past few weeks, each time I got there late afternoon/early evening so their famous mochi balls were sold out already but I got a couple of the Chinese pastries with a flaky exterior and lotus seed or red bean paste filling. Was very pleased with these, the flaky pastry was perfectly reminiscent of the ones I grew up eating, with a shell that is light and slightly savory and a bit on the drier side to complement the generous amount of filling inside. Their moon cakes also look good, and though I haven't had the occasion to buy an entire moon cake yet, I plan to try these in the future. As others have mentioned this is an old school spot so don't expect much in terms of decor. The space itself is pretty good-sized for a bakery, with a few larger round tables set up with chairs, though due to covid I haven't seen more than a couple other people in the shop around late afternoon time. That being said I thought the service is pretty cordial, no frills but sufficiently pleasant. Covid-relevant notes: Staff wears masks and pastries are handled tongs and placed directly into wax paper baggies. This is a review for their deep fried dumplings 角仔， which is a traditional Chinese New Year food. Recommended by foodies online, I went and got a box of it for $11. It is an old fashion Chinese bakery. It looks like a hole in the wall with minimal decorations. Prices are cheap for bakery items but I didn't try anything else. The man, I believe he was the owner was friendly. The deep fried dumplings was generous in portion. It had a flaky shell and crunchy filling including peanut , sugar. The mochi is very soft and not overly sweet, perfect for a little sweet treat. The roast pork bun is very different than the regular one colorwise but it is flavorful. I do hereby swear on my firstborn for that transcendent peanut butter mochi. Put aside all the other desserts/pastries you've ever tried. There's nothing like sinking your teeth down through that chewy layer and hitting that layer of not-too-sweet, crunchy peanut butter. Sadly, the amount of PB filling they pack in there has been on the down-swing over the years but still very tasty and a nostalgic childhood snack. They look pretty innocent and small and will deceive you into thinking you can eat three of these with no problem but you may need to sit down afterwards. Have also tried the red bean version - I love red bean and will always support it in dessert options but definitely not as good as the PB. Once upon a time, they had a black sesame version but they either sell out real fast every time I go or they stopped making it. My family also loves their fluffy cakes and sesame balls; we always end up buying a ton to give to other relatives around the holidays. Same for the mooncakes. I have yet to eat a stale mooncake, though the ones with the salted egg yokes don't tend to keep for as long as the ones shipped in boxes. I remember happily downing two or three of the mooncakes as a kid and then realizing, as a semi-responsible adult, with a pang that each one was like the caloric equivalent of a donut. One last note - the egg tarts are jiggly deliciousness with a great flaky crust, though I think you can get slightly cheaper ones at other places. Ambiance is quintessential Chinatown: a bit dinghy around the edges, no decor to speak of unless you count the big red calendar from 2018 that supermarkets always hand out for free. I have finally found FRESHLY BAKED mooncakes!! These mooncakes are not like the ones already packaged and sold in the tin can boxes. These are really fresh, just out-of-the-oven fresh!! There are absolutely NO preservatives. SO health-wise, this bakery won me over! IMPORTANT TIP: Chiu Hong's traditional Mooncakes are available only for a limited time, just for the Mid-Autumn Festival aka Moon Festival. Therefore, you have to go early in the morning or else the mooncakes are sold out by noon and they won't produce more until the next day. They have mooncakes in different kinds of filings. Just ask the staff and they will give you a list of the various mooncakes available. My favorite is the "Five kernel" - A filling consisting of 5 types of nuts and seeds, coarsely chopped, is held together with maltose syrup. Try it before it is TOO late!! In 2011, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on September 12. So when Yelp, in all its infinite wisdom, recently did away with its stealth Follower feature, I think I lost track of some stalkees...err peeps. Luckily, though, Jenny G. still pops up on my feed. Good thing too, since it is thanks to her that I came across this spot. (Hi, Jenny G.): That wasn't creepy at all: Anyway, stopped in here with hubby since we were enjoying a mini Chinatown / Soho food crawl... And because of that, we were already loaded down with various treats to bring home. So I got just a Red Bean Mochi and a Peanut one to try later on. Well, later on turned into much, much, MUCH later on. By the time I finally took a bite of these, they'd lost some of their chewy-liciousness, but I could taste both their subtle coconut coatings in concert with each respective flavor. Fancy speak for still pretty tasty even after I forgot about 'em on the counter. Not too sweet either. And at 3 for $1.50 or something ridiculous like that, you can't beat the price. I'm writing this on behalf of my family. My family went to this bakery last week to get the "double egg yolk" mooncakes for mid-autumn festival. The sale lady reassured her that for the EXTRA price she paid for, she will sure get double egg yolks in each mooncake. But we did not. See the pictures I attached. This is very disappointing as this is a long standing brands for mooncakes. Also, the taste is alright. The only good thing about it is they are not overly oily like some other brands. From reading all the great reviews on Yelp, I had to see for myself how amazing this affordable delight would taste like. To my joy, the peanut mochi at Chiu Hong is something to die for. My one note of caution is to think twice of how many pieces you decide to buy. I given 5 stars solely for their fresh mochi balls. They make two versions of them: red bean paste and peanut sugar. Both are so good but I like the red bean paste more just because I am not a fan of peanuts. The firm and chewy texture of the mochi is what makes it so perfect. This is the only place I buy my mochi balls. Just that I have not find another bakery that can make it the same. Try their coconut tart and triangle cake and many more. They all good. Challah to all the pork bunz here! What's better than a bun that taste like delicious challah bread? Filled up with a savory mix of pork that is both lean and fatty, carmelized onions and a base sauce without the standard red food dye is heaven in my mouth. I could eat 10 of these if I were a dude but thinking back, there was that time when I ate 5 on a bus or was it at home lying down texting. Perfect multitasking food! In spite of a limited selection, this is one of the better bakeries in the greater Manhattan Chinatown area. In addition to the buns and moon cakes mentioned by other reviewers, they make a meat & vegetable bun that rocks. The coffee is standard Chinatown coffee and the help, while a little gruff, are okay and laughed at my awful command of phrases in Mandarin and Cantonese! The bathroom says employees only and since I am employed (just not there!) I tried it out and it was quite clean. My friends told me that Chiu Hong was a meeting place for many of the area residents when the area was Italian and today it seems to be serving the Chinese community in the same capacity. Glad this place is surviving this pandemic! Got a dozen of their 老婆饼 (wife's cake), aka. wintermelon cakes. It's just as I remembered how I had them 10+ years ago. Kept them traditionally-made, and with just the right amount of thin melons, chewiness and thinness. Outside doesn't look very appealing, because this place is ancient, but the wife's cakes are thumbs up if you like sweets. My favorite pork bun spot! My aunt, uncle and grandmother lived in the city. For years I secretly rejoiced in their visits primarily because they would bring cha siu bao (pork buns) (from Taipan back in those days) for me to devour. Years later, as I started to make trips into NYC myself, I noticed a steady decline in the quality of the pork buns from Taipan had really declined. There was no identifiable meat or onion, but rather some sort of reddish jelly-like filling. I embarked on a mission to find a new cha siu bao home. Chiu Hong was not the first I found, but once I tried the bao here, I never went anywhere else. The bun is sweetly flavorfull, moist, and doughy. The pork inside is plentiful, though fatty and gristly (it is fast-food, afterall), and there are nice hunks of identifiable meat and onions. The filling itself is lightly seasoned. If you prefer a stronger flavor this might not be your mecca, but for me its home. The servers are very nice, a family run business. The kitchen door is always open, and looking back you see it is immaculate, and the preparers are clean, efficient and seem to be enjoying their work. They have a lunch-time catering business, so if you stop by at around 10 o'clock the place is bedlam as they prepare the meals, but very laid-back any other time I have visited. Though I come for the bao, I have liked everything I tried, and I especially like thier home-made herbally-infused black tea. Its very strong and a great pick-me-up. read more

Chiu Hong Bakery is one of those old time neighborhood Chinese bakeries that is still going strong. There are several tables and most of time, locals come out here and hang out and have a drink, read paper, chat and eat pastry. Even the workers in this bakery haven't changed. They've only aged and are more grey and worn. I will be so lost, when they retire and shutter their doors like May May Bakery. You don't find many of these old time bakeries any more in the neighborhood. This is my favorite go-to bakery for everything that is fresh mochi. I love their mochis. I've tried all types of mochis from Japanese package ones you find in the refrigerated section of Asian grocery stores, to package ones from Taiwan and other bakeries and none can compare to Chiu Hong Bakery. Have been eating them for such a long time. They have, as long as I remembered, been 3 pieces for $1.00 and through the recession and rise of all things around, the price of these mochis have still endured and so has the quality. These beautiful rounded, soft little balls are rolled in dessicated coconut and you have it with either the peanut filling or the red bean paste. These mochis are so beautiful they look like snow balls. The mochi with peanut filling is my favorite. The peanut filling consists of sesame seeds, sugar, chopped peanuts and coconut shreds. The soft mochi skin is made of glutinous rice and stuffed with just the right amount of love. The red bean paste is soft and sweet and is also in perfect proportion to the skin. These are absolutely beautiful little white round packages, that I NEVER grow tired of and come here time and time again just for the mochis. When eaten fresh, the skin is so soft and feels like the silky softness of a parrot's tongue. If you have ever fed seeds to a parrot and your finger graze the bird's tongue that's what the soft mochi silkiness is like. They also make decent and nicely textured walnut cookies, almond cookies and sponge cakes. Still when I think of Chiu Hong, only one thing comes to mind MOCHI. read more

Ever tried FRESH mochi???? Ever tried Mochi? Bakeries making mochi are few and far between in the United States. First time I had mochi was at a night market in Taipei. Oh my gosh it is fun to eat. The texture is so different than anything we typically eat. And the flavors...can be varied from Red Bean to Peanut to fresh strawberries. So, about this place. It is fresh! Eat is fresh! Do not wait to savor it...no preservatives so yes it will not be good in a couple of days. Go to this bakery, eat some there and take some home to share. Fun fun! I've grown up eating peanut mochi my whole life so when a friend told me this place has the best peanut mochi she ever had, I had to come try it. Came after work and made it here before they close at 7pm and they had one tray of mochi left. I got 3 pieces for $1.50. The size is small but not tiny small. The mochi skin is thicker than most peanut mochi that I had and chewier. Although the size of the mochi was small, the peanut filling was enough. It wasnt overpacked with too much peanut crumbles which I like. It does taste very good and it wasnt overly sweet. I also got their almond cookie which was $1. It was a big cookie. It was also not too sweet but crunchy and had a decent amount of almond flavor. I enjoyed both of these pastries and def will get it again. Indeed one of my fav places for peanut mochi and it had a strong coconut smell.
