Been trying to call ina pickup, but all I get is silence. As soon as they pickup you're asked to hold, and that's all I've been doing for the last 30 minutes is holding the phone. Ask why, and all they serve up is excuses. Try to call back and they claim because you've done so you're now at the back of a line that only exist in their minds. Here's some advice, you can put someone on hold but you might want to monitor the hold time, 1-3 minutes is acceptable, then that person on the phone needs to be heard. People call in ahead of time for a reason. My reason, I'm disabled and have to get someone else to retrieve my order, but thanks to your lack of concern for Joe Public this person didn't want to wait another 30 minutes to an hour for you all to pickup the phone after putting me in hold!!! read more

Walked in at 732 and was told we could only order to go, since they closed at 8. Went to bar to order and was approached by bartender. She said they had already called last call and we could not order, it was 736! We told her we were from San Antonio and had just read their write up in Texas Monthly and her response was sorry if you know anyone who wants to work you can send them our way. She said it was posted EVERYWHERE that they stopped taking orders at 730 . . . we didn't see it anywhere. We asked to speak to a manager and conveniently we were told there wasn't one on site. Poor customer service, no communication among staff as to serving hours, no signage for customers, and overall very disappointed. read more

Seriously like you'll need a towel after to dry off :) Just order half of Darrel special and half surf and turf and find you a bed after!! Just the best. Also stumbled upon the best grilled cheese!! Just a durn great sub sandwich or po-boy. Delicious. I had the special, small, everything and added jalapeño mayo. Hot Sandwich with a bite. I had it au jus, next time I may order au jus in side. It's a big sandwich and it's 'juicy'! Plenty of napkins. The decor is simple diner, service quick, you can service yourself on soda or tea or the waiter will bring you refills. Thursday is a great night to because it's happy hour starting at 6- $ 3 pints, but I had to drive to Oakdale so no can do. Service is real quick too. Please add fries to the menu. Wow. Worst po'boys we've ever had. Worst sandwich I've ever had. Just execrable. I ordered the shrimp po'boy, described as containing "spicy Cajun shrimp." What I received was inedible. I am not exaggerating when I say that at least one full cup of mayonnaise had been slathered onto the bread. Just a massively huge quantity. When the sandwich was lifted, huge glops fell from it and plopped onto the plate. Just revolting. The other components were bad as well. The bread was way too soft, meaning it had no crust or structure whatsoever, and was incapable of holding the ingredients in a coherent sandwich. The lettuce was wilted and slimy. And the small shrimp not only had no Cajun seasoning flavor at all, they didn't even have any shrimp flavor. Because I never waste animal products, I ate the tasteless shrimp using a fork, after wiping each one on a napkin to eliminate at least some of the mayonnaise. I know that my description sounds harsh, but this was truly a disgusting po'boy. I've had so many good ones (they aren't difficult to make) in my many dozens of visits to Louisiana. I had a truly excellent shrimp po'boy the previous day in Galveston, Texas. Darrell's version was almost inexplicable in its nastiness. Maceo ordered the Surf & Turf po'boy, described as "sliced roast beef & sauteed shrimp cooked in roast beef gravy." While not quite as bad as my sandwich, it wasn't good at all. The gravy had no flavor whatsoever. The lettuce was slimy, the cheese plentiful but tasteless, the scant shrimp tasteless as well, and the bread, again, was so soft without any structure, that the whole thing fell apart in an unappetizing, goopy mess. Despite sandwiches being made this way, Darrell's is hugely popular for some reason. Just goes to show that not all popular places are good. read more

Good cheesy bread, and great bread for their po boys, but overall overrated And too sloppy for the mediocre taste. This is our second try. We had had a small surf and turf, which was hard to taste from all the mayonnaise; and a sausage sandwich that was covered in so much barbecue sauce that it was difficult to find the paltry amount of sliced/chopped meat. Two, maybe 2 1/2 stars. For me, a real Poboy shop needs to have fried shrimp and meatballs, and offer at the classic Sentra pool boy with red gravy or roast beef debris. read more

The place looks like a dive but the food quality and price for delicious huge meat-filled to the MAX made fresh to order po-boys are soooo worth the drive as well as the wait or the traffic jam in the little parking lot especially when it's the locals #1 place to grub! I asked my brother who lives on Deridder where to go on my brief visit to Lake Charles for a local eatery. He gave me a couple of options, one of which was Darrell's. Their Poboy sandwiches are apparently local legend and I decided to take a chance. I ordered the sausage poboy with bbq sauce and it was amazing. The full restaurant at 2:00 echoed what my brother said as this is a place of local legend. The menu is very straightforward as they have poboys, chips and a bar. Best sandwich I've ever had. A friend recommended as we passed through town on the way to NOLA. Hate when someone builds things up b/c it typically never lives up to the hype. This sandwich did all this AND more. We got the Darrell's Special. The bread was amazing and the neat was juicy, moist and didn't needed to be as it slathered in roast beef gravy along with 3 melted cheeses which make your taste buds dance with delight. I had to eat somewhere else in a couple hours so we split one. I totally regret that choice. Could've easily eaten the large one and then some. The wait staff was very attentive as well. Can't judge a book by its cover, although this is something I have known for a while, especially thanks to Yell! They have NOTHING fried here.. so don't expect French fries or fried shrimp poboys. The small sandwiches are decent size, the large are even bigger. We had a group of 15 people, and everyone got the large po boy and split with someone. Along with a bag of chips. The Darrell Special was hands down, one of the best poboys I've had in a while.. The Surf n Turf would probably be what I order next time I make it to Darrells. The bloody Mary's were good, good beer and liquor selection as well. Noise was average, and they were great at accommodating such a large group. The waiter was great too! read more
