Get a bag of jalapeño chips, put em on the bottom of your tray and eat them as the drippings from your sandwich coat em!!!! Hands down, one of the best po-boys I've ever had. That's coming from someone who grew up eating po-boys on the regular having been raised in New Orleans. I was thoroughly, thoroughly impressed. When I got there, I wasn't sure what to try, and the young lady at the front helped me navigate the menu and choices. She suggested getting the mixed cajun sausage-BBQ beef, which isn't on the menu but was absolutely delicious. The bread of a po-boy is arguably the most essential part of the sandwich, and I'm not sure where they get theirs from, but it was perfectly soft and buttered. The meat inside was perfect as well. I can only imagine the other options are great too. This review is based strictly on the food, as I did not eat in the restaurant, but I'm assuming the service matched the quality of the food. Delicious!! I'm not from Lake Charles so I'd never had the option of a surf and turf poboy with loaded roast beef and grilled shrimps!! The bread was soft but chewy perfect French bread. The jalapeño mayo was an extra touch of tastiness, and sloppiness! Because what's a neat roast beef Poboy! I'm not big on really spicy foods, once I removed the actual jalapeños it had the perfect amount of bite! I went back again a few days later for a larger sandwich so that should tell you! I can't tell you why this sandwich is so fantastic, but I can try. It could be all the hype I've heard from my man friend, but he likes hot dog spaghetti so I'm not sure that's it. It could have been the pre-Darrell's beers from Crying Eagle or the lack of food/plethora of unpacking boxes that happened earlier that day, but I think this sandwich transcends drunken hunger. I think it's just THAT good. It's so basic but when you combine toasted bread, lots of mayo, melty pepper jack and hot peppers with cold cuts and roast beef and gravy, how can you really lose? Sure the location is a dive with good lighting and the crowd is anywhere from frattys with their mom to the regular drunk with his Budweiser at the end of the bar but there's gravy. And cheese bread. And the juice from this basic sandwich is dripping down your hands and you are trying to lick them before they fall on the unclean bar. Just go. Don't judge the book by its cover. And get a Darrell's special with a cheesy bread/gravy app. You're welcome. read more

I thought darrels was open since it said so here on yelp despite what lake Charles has been through. I stopped by last Monday 10/12 on my way to New Orleans. Our server was very nice but spending $40 on 2 fountain drinks, 12" sausage sandwich and 6" ham sandwich, with 2 chips it's kind of crazy. It was our 1st time and it was very underwhelming! My sandwich wasn't even 6" it was fairly small. I will not be back because that's a lot of money to still be hungry right after. I was hesitant at first. Some friends said this was a "must-try" when in Lake Charles. I had always had the traditional po-boy, yes, fried shrimp with some lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce. Well if you plan to eat here, throw that "tradition" out the window and come in very open-minded, and you will enjoy whatever sandwich you order. For me, I got the Surf and Turf option which was very tender beef with gravy, topped with shrimp scampi and I also got the jalapeño mayo. This was the most messy sandwich I have ever eaten! It was all over my face and all down my hands and everything, but boy was it delicious!! I am a fan! The place is very casual, the service is great and the food comes out fairly quickly. If you are nearby, stop in. But make sure you are really hungry. These po-boys are FILLING! Oh, and don't let the pictures of sloppy mess deter you from trying it. My husband and I have been a couple of times when we visit Lake Charles. It will now become a "must do" when in town. The Darrell Special was recommended and did not disappoint. We learned that it is HUGE though so we order one and split it now. There's no way to eat the whole thing! It's awesome as well. Been trying to call ina pickup, but all I get is silence. As soon as they pickup you're asked to hold, and that's all I've been doing for the last 30 minutes is holding the phone. Ask why, and all they serve up is excuses. Try to call back and they claim because you've done so you're now at the back of a line that only exist in their minds. Here's some advice, you can put someone on hold but you might want to monitor the hold time, 1-3 minutes is acceptable, then that person on the phone needs to be heard. People call in ahead of time for a reason. My reason, I'm disabled and have to get someone else to retrieve my order, but thanks to your lack of concern for Joe Public this person didn't want to wait another 30 minutes to an hour for you all to pickup the phone after putting me in hold!!! read more
