What can I say that hasn't been said? Probably the best poboy I've ever put in my face...yeah, that about sums it up. We came here on a recommendation from a friend who raved about it at work, and so while we were at L'auberge for the weekend we stopped in for a quick dinner. I got the Darrell's special and my guy got the Brisket. Of course, we sampled each other's, which resulted in him looking longingly at my sandwich for the rest of the meal (we both agreed the special is where it's at). Also, don't you dare skip on the jalepeno mayo, it's delicious and without it you're only getting halfway to heaven. So we had a party of sixteen and got seated quickly. The food was good and you can tell it is a popular hangout with college kids. Everyone in our group raved about how good the food was which is the reason we went. Personally, I found it to be average in quality. It wasn't bad and it wasn't great. I would come back and eat again because my sandwich didn't look as good as everyone else's. Maybe I just got the wrong thing? The service was not so great but they were VERY busy. Saturday at lunch time, place was jam packed! Obviously the local place to go. Menu is small, just sandwiches, but they do sandwiches right. Got the Darrell's Special: roast beef, ham, turkey, cheese, and roast beef gravy. That sandwich was legit. Got the Shrimp sandwich as well. Not my favorite. The only saving grace was the jalapeno mayo they put on that sandwich. Stick with the Darrell's Special and you'll be good to go. Beer is cold and sandwiches are hot. Stopped by at Darrell to have a quick bite while on our way to Baton Rouge based on the great reviews on Yelp. Definitely overrated as we have had better sandwiches, but their bread is good though. Servers were friendly but the lady owner who takes care of the cash register right at you step into Darrell is not friendly nor smiling to her customers. Looks grumpy. Shrimp Po'Boy is the best I've ever had - it is a decent sandwich that fills ya up. My only complaint is they only serve chips as a side, no fries. Drive thru takes a while but worth it. My only caution to the reader is if you're watching your weight, skip their food ;-) read more

I've been stoping by this place for 3 years when I'm in the area. First, this place is a dive, in the good way. It is a sports bar that does po'boys and bags of chips - and the sandwiches are very tasty! Over the years, I stuck with the Surf & Turf and the Special - I suggest the all the way with jalapeño mayo. Though the bread is the typical crusty french loaf - both of my 2 favorites have enough beef stock that the bottom of the roll gets more than a little wet - so of course the secret is to turn the sandwich upside down and eat it that way. Didn't understand the hype of this place at all. I really don't get why it has so many good reviews. The menu has like 5 things on it. The shrimp sandwich was drenched in mayo and had way too much cheese on it. Tasted mediocre at best. The cups for drinks were plastic. They didn't have fries, we just got chips in a bag. We kept having loud/drunk people walk by and disrupt us. The restaurant itself is not very nice or clean. Overall not a great experience. read more

They best triple meat poboy in the city. I haven't tried the other flavors as you just can't pass up the meat, cheese, auju and jalapeño mayo combo. A half size should fill you up. If you're super hungry, pregnant or want another half for later - go for the large. They don't refrigerate well though because of the auju. The only downside is, it takes awhile to make and it's hard to get through on the phone if you're trying to call in for pick up. However, they do have a drive through so there's that. read more

OMG!!! Lemme say by saying that they have the best poboy sandwich I've ever had in Louisiana. A lot of my friends in New Orleans are always asking me where is the best poboy place to eat and I always reply DARRELL'S in Lake Charles you have to drive but it's totally worth it lol. My favorites are the Darrell's special and the Shrimp poboy, my goodness the shrimp are buttery and the bread has the perfect texture and by the way the prices are reasonable so that's a plus. The service is always friendly and they're always busy on the weekends so be prepared to wait a little bit. I haven't had the pleasure of eating here for over 10 years, and am happy to say, it was every bit of delicious as I remember!

I went in and got the Surf & Turf, it was so good! I want to try other Poboys but it will be hard to get past this one! I got it the way it comes without the jalapeno mayo as I don't like mayo and the garlic butter on the bread was a heavenly surprise that I will dream about until I get back for another one. I love Darrell's! It is worth the drive on the loop (210) instead of straight through town for the bread alone. It's heaven. The special is the best but can be messy (they're all a little messy, frankly) with the sauce. The sandwiches are heavy on all the sauces, so if you're not a fan, consider yourself warned. After you eat here you will want to buy just extra loaves of their bread. Alas, they don't sell them. I hope they change this policy. Definitely recommend this place. The shrimp were little spicy taste bombs. There was mustard. There was lettuce. There were 3 cheeses. And for goodness sake there was gravy! Oh the delicious gravy, salty creamy goodness. Then on the next level of my cruise to bliss was the jalapeno mayo... real pieces of jalapeno included in this creamy fantastic concotion.
