Whenever we fly home to Cali, we always make a point to take our family out to a restaurant. Darrow's had good Yelp reviews and the food pictures looked yummy, plus it was close to homebase. It's a very welcoming place where the owner comes to greet you and calls you "family". His family trained at the Commander's Palace in New Orleans. After giving us a run down of their menu, he gave us a sample of their gumbo. We ordered at the cashier then took our seats at a table. Food is fresh, cooked to order and we got it quickly. Our party ordered: -Cajun fries are HOT -Wings juicy, hot (heat) and crispy on the outside. You can order them grilled or deep fried -french bread is chewy not crusty -Jambalaya is good, they use chicken sausage - Clean tasting catfish - Gator sauce is green colored ranch - they have a self service coke machine *No pork served here* Our party had a great time. My in-laws loved the food so much that they're planning to tell their friends. NOTE: Building is on the corner of Carson and Avalon, parking entrance is at the stoplight across Ralph's. My wife and I came here after shopping in Carson. Being in SoCal there isn't much southern food so we were excited to try Darrow's. Once we entered we were welcomed with such wonderful hospitality by all the workers. Hello's, how are you, is this your first time? We were offered a sample taste of the gumbo and chit chatted like regulars. I asked what was the top choices and was told the Zeek and Bayou Classic Po'Boy's were popular. They honestly sounded both delicious, but I went with the Zeek since I've never had a Po'Boy with potato salad before. As part of the lunch special we included some greens with the meal. The Po'Boy was no joke. The fried catfish was unique in the breading they used. You get the grainy light batter with flakey catfish. Inside was also some deep fried shrimp which were hot and juicy. Then the potato salad adds a unique texture and flavor profile that combines it all. Not tangy, not sweet, not mustard in taste. Just a good mellow potato salad that you don't feel guilty about. The greens were good in taste. Their recipe didn't have any bacon or ham that I could see. I didn't mind it at all. I enjoy the flavor of greens and thought this was good. We ended off the meal with some peach cobbler. It was sweet and had a good pie crust. It wasn't unique as a dessert, but it took care of our sweet tooth! Did I also mention there's a bar? I didn't get anything, but the daiquiri's looked like they would be great! I'm always down for good Southern cooking. I recently came back from a NOLA trip and I missed the food so I was looking for a Creole place nearby and this spot came up. I didn't have any trouble finding parking, it was connected to a parking garage and you can park free for two hours. Inside, it was very nicely decorated with NOLA themed art and decor. There was a long line and the restaurant was almost full, so I knew it was going to be good. I ordered the Bayou class po boy which had shrimp and oysters in it. Also came with a side and drink, so I picked red beans and rice. The red beans and rice were okay, it was kind of bland. The po boy was really good though, the shrimp and oysters were crispy and had just the right amount of dressing. Overall, I would come back again if I'm in the area and try the other po boys. read more

Norwood was so friendly and just sparking up a conversation. He was very honest about the food and the ingredients. He just was not there to take my money. I love New Orleans style food, Po' boys, gumbo, jambalaya, all of it really. Went here on the advice of a fellow foodie and I had the Zeke Po' boy. It sounds weird, fried catfish, fried shrimp and potato salad all on a sandwich roll. It was great. Everything was so good, I ordered stuff to go. Red beans and rice, jambalaya, and we even got an order of beignets. The only reason I gave them four stars instead of five is because we had to remind them about the order of beignets three times. Cant wait to come back! We came for the first time a few days ago. The owner made us instantly feel welcome and at home. He walked us through the entire menu and his New Orleans roots. He even gave us samples of the gumbo! I ended up with a full order of the gumbo with a side of corn bread (heavenly) and husband got a po boy. Both were fabulous. Finished off with beignets! The service here is out of this world - it feels like you are in someone's home the way they genuinely care about how you are enjoying your meal. Ambiance and decor are also bright and fun. I met some friends there for lunch because he heard so much about this place and wanted to try it. From the time we entered the doors we were greeted with smiles. Darrow was very personable and treated us just like family. He went over the menu and even let us try the gumbo before we ordered. We got our food and it was everything and more. Y'all, I haven't been here since my first experience when they moved into the neighborhood. It didn't go so well that time, but I tell ya', this visit redeemed all that. My girlz came over after COVID and wanted lunch. One was in a hurry, so we decided to eat local. I suggested places near, and they chose Cajun. Our first post-COVID meetup together, we sat outside. Not that there was a choice, as the inside of this restaurant is not yet open (due to the need to hire post-COVID employees). There are a handful of outside tables. Two families were already seated, with room for 3 more. Mr. Norwood and his staff are the friendliest folk! We learned lots of down home stories, but the time it took, plus meal prep, made my friend nervous (Remember, she was on a time schedule.). We all got Po' Boy Lagraissie, and 2 of us got sides (jambalaya and gumbo) to take home. Child, EVERYTHING was amazing! Two went fried, and two went grilled. The seasoning and grill crust on that catfish makes you wanna holla! The lack of crumbs for their fried po' boys was the same. One got red beans and rice, and raved. Two got greens, and we debated over drinking the pot liquor in public. The other got fries. If we'd had time, we would have had dessert. Had the opportunity to visit Darrow's and I can't begin to share how extremely pleased we were with EVERYTHING. We were greeted warmly by a new server, Ingles. He explained he'd only been there a short time, but still took time to expertly explain to us first-time guests the House Rules and graciously offered us a sample of gumbo. After I had a chance to taste the gumbo, I knew choosing this spot was the right way to go. We had a seat and took a minute to check out our surroundings and look at the menu. The place is really casual with walls adorned with everything New Orleans. The Falcons fan in me took a deep breath and decided to stay anyway! The restaurant is kept very clean and the staff are always busy keeping things running smoothly. You can tell they work well as a team to serve their customers. There are a variety of delicious options to choose from. We had several questions about the menu, and Tracy was so sweet and patient with all the things we asked. It was hard to choose, but we finally ordered. The wait was fairly decent, especially for food that's freshly prepared. Our drinks were perfect! We tried a Georgia Peach Martini and a Blended Mango Daiquiri. Both were well balanced, the martini was chilled just right and the Daquiri wasn't too syrupy like most flavored drinks can get. They really were delicious. Our meals arrived shortly after. Fried catfish, fried shrimp, fried wings (they offer grilled options) jambalaya, red beans and rice, and cornbread. Nothing on our plates stood a chance! I'm from the south, and I miss rich flavor profiles like the ones they use here. It's not salty. It's not heavily seasoned. You can taste the build-up of the flavors from the base of the recipe to the final touches. The wings, catfish and shrimp were fried just right. Nice and juicy on the inside while having a good coating on the outside without being hard or too crunchy. The beans were tender. The rice was fluffy. The jambalaya had really good sausage in it. I believe it was chicken sausage as the restaurant uses no pork. And the cornbread. I don't know what they use or how they do it. But I will boldly go on record and say this is the best cornbread I've had at any restaurant I've visited. We couldn't help ourselves and also got an order of Beignets and the Peach Cobbler. The beignets were soft and pillowy covered with powdered sugar. We took the peach cobbler home as we were absolutely stuffed! We should've got two because we fought over that one! The crust was so good. The peaches were cooked down perfectly. The sweetness was spot on. I want some now as I'm typing this! And the cherry on top was getting to meet Mr. Norwood before we left. What an absolute pleasure. To have such an amazing establishment where the food and drink stand on its own and speaks for itself, and STILL go above and beyond to engage with your customers speaks volumes. Thank you and your entire staff for feeding us well, making us some fantastic drinks, and for being so warm and welcoming. Something I've really missed since moving to Los Angeles. The hubby & I went before a Galaxy game. The food was amazing. We had the Big Easy Supper (fried catfish, fried shrimp & fried oysters). The cornbread batter was delicious. It wasn't too thick. We also had the greens & bean balaya (mixture of Jambalaya & red beans), both great. Staff was extremely friendly too. Battle of the Zeeks! Grilled or fried? Fried has shrimp and catfish with a lot of crunch to contrast that creamy potato salad, but the grilled shrimp are super tender, and the catfish is almost buttery. I swear, they're the only people I know who can make catfish taste not like mud. Which did I like better? The Zeek or the Zeek? BOTH! I love both!...and literally every other sandwich they make. Extremely disappointed with the customer service. I have been patronizing the restaurant for nearly 15 years when they were located in Marina del Rey. Today, 4/19/25, I drove over 30 minutes from Inglewood to Carson to pick up my normal order, a Zeek's Po Boy (fried shrimp, fried catfish with potato salad, $14.99). I asked for a side of lettuce. I ordered a second Po Boy, catfish, with no lettuce. When I arrived, I noticed the sandwich was packaged on a plate instead of its normal foil wrap, but I assumed this was a new trend for the restaurant. I drove back home and opened the sandwich only to notice the potato salad was missing. When I called, I spoke with Tracy and explained the situation and told her that I ventured from Inglewood to Carson, specifically for this sandwich. She did not offer a credit for future use or a refund. In fact, she was not even apologetic. Tracy said that since I asked for lettuce, they assumed I did not want potato salad, insinuating that the error in the order is my fault. I would've gladly paid the fee for a spoonful of iceberg lettuce--but don't take away the potato salad, it is what makes the sandwich! Tracy blamed the online order provider (which is featured on the company's website and prompts the customer to order online through Popmenu) and said she MAY be able to offer a free potato salad ($5.75 value) the next time I place an order. I declined and suggested that she offer a $10 credit for future use. She suggested that I call Popmenu to request an adjustment. I ordered directly from the business' website, not through the Popmenu app, so it's not like I can file a complaint as one would with DoorDash or Uber. After 10 minutes of going back-and forth, with no suitable resolution in sight, I kindly told Tracy that if the side of potato salad is her best offer, after patronizing the business for 15+ years and driving 30+ minutes each way alllllll the way from Inglewood, that I would not be returning. If I lived closer, I would've returned both sandwiches and requested a refund. I love supporting black businesses, but this ordeal left a bad taste in my mouth. Zero accountability, no apology and no effort to fix the mistake. read more
