I feel so happy this place opened! I have been 5 times now and each time the sushi is delicious and fresh. I also ordered hot tea on my visit today, and it was served in a whole teapot ao I could keep pouring myself hot cups during my meal. I like the white tiger roll, the shiro tataki appetizer, and the chirashi. The servers are always lovely too. Street parking is a dream in this area too! (I think the only thing I don't like so much is the dressing on the house green salad. I wish it were not so sweet. But that is my only trifle!) Would recommend Daruma for sure. read more

Stopped by yesterday. Ordered bento box CA Roll & Chicken Teriyaki- very fresh and delicious. I liked that they gave edamame to start at no charge, they just brought it over- very appreciative of that. Tried Daruma for the first time last night. What a wonderful experience. Instead of the same old teriyaki chicken and California roll, etc. etc., they had some lesser known, as well as innovative items on the menu. A couple of examples are: Our favorite Japanese dish okonomiyaki. While some Japanese restaurants serve this dish, Daruma has three different okonomiyaki options (Japanese pancake with seafood, pork belly or vegetarian). We tried two of them and both were delicious. Other examples are the Japanese tacos and the salmon skin salad. Their menu is extensive, so I'm sure there's something for everyone. The atmosphere was quaint and cozy. As a final bonus, they gave their own off street parking lot. Service was also right there when you needed them. We will definitely be back! read more

I frequented this location when it was Temari, and earlier when it was Edokko, so was pleased to see another Japanese restaurant at this address. Glad to see the owners retained the restaurant's traditional look and feel and that there is still free off-street parking! We had an early dinner after seeing a nearby movie and were quickly seated by a courteous waitress. We were served edamame while we perused the menu. I had the Tonkatsu Don and my dining partner had the Chicken Teriyaki Don. Both meals came with a nice green salad and bowl of steaming hot miso soup. Our generous rice bowls came out soon afterwards and we found them tasty and well seasoned. We ordered Genmai Cha (green tea) which arrived in a decorated teapot. There were not many indoor diners, but they seemed to be doing a brisk take-out business. They had a pretty soft opening but I'm sure word will get out that this neighborhood restaurant is back in business. read more

Pretty good spot that I believe opened recently. Got myself a California roll, Lion king roll, and a baked salmon roll (the last one is named something I don't immediately recall). There was only a few people so the server checked in on me pretty frequently, which was nice. Clean restaurant, the rolls were pretty good (better than many other sushi places I've been to in the east bay), and the prices were actually reasonable. They also have a loyalty card punch card thing where you spend a certain amount or come in a certain number of times, you get a free roll. I'll be going back. read more

Last night we ordered take out from here for our family of 4. We ordered a LOT of sushi, and my kids loved the California rolls and avocado rolls. We ordered a few special rolls (rainbow, tempura rolls, spicy tuna, caterpillar, etc) and it was ready in a timely manner. It was expensive, (like you probably can't go on a regular basis if you are on the poorer side like me), but it was not the most expensive we've had, and the quality of fish is definitely reflected in the price. We bought way too much and had enough for lunch the next day. Some people won't eat day old sushi, but we do, and the fish was just as fresh as the night before. I am looking forward to going back for the donburis and udon dishes. Highly recommend to those who would like sushi with nicer quality fish. read more

Excellent service, place looks clean and organized, we had Daruma roll and rainbow roll, 3 different hand rolls, and several small dishes. The rolls are all skillfully done with attention to detail, definitely above your average sushi places in Berkeley. I was happily surprised by the ankimo, which I've never had before. Monkfish liver together with shiso leaf, onion, shred daikon, ponzu sauce, and little bit of soy sauce, it was a wonderful combination of creamy and acidic, crunchy and refreshing. Had high expectations of having a sushi resturant close to home, but this place falls a bit flat. Service was slow, and the food was "decent." The sushi just didn't taste as good as other places, and the salmon roll we bought didn't really taste like salmon. Additionally the soy sauce dish when dining in is way too shallow. read more

If disappointment became a sushi restaurant... This was for a GrubHub order so I can't comment on the service or ambiance. I ordered a Lion King Roll, 49er Roll, Kung Fu Panda Roll, and an Omakase for the missus and I here since practically every other restaurant was closed. The Omakase was honestly a mess for the most part and nothing was fresh except for the tako, salmon belly, and escolar. There was saba as part of this and it honestly reminded me why I wouldn't order it from a restaurant that I don't fully trust. I hate to say it but most of everything else was probably a good day and a half away from being thrown out. The actual rice itself was poorly done and honestly don't think I'd be able to tell it apart from a machine made nigiri base if compared side by side. In terms of the actual rolls, there was almost nothing redeeming except the 49er roll since at least the salmon was fresh here. The rolls were extremely small and a good ~40% smaller than what one could consider the "norm". Insult was added to injury being that these were priced on the higher end as well... I'm honestly tempted to give this place one star since there was almost nothing redeeming but I can't bring myself to do it given that this is a local restaurant. TLDR: Omakase? This is a small step above Safeway quality and a far reach from anything notable. Special rolls? They're much smaller than other restaurants around the area and around the Bay with generous pricing to count. read more

Daruma Sushi is a treat! Good food, sweet service, and great ambiance in West Berkeley. Enjoyed a meal with family, but also good for singles/friends/casual date night. Tried nigiri, sashimi, maki (creative options for kids!), soups, and tempura. All were delicious! The restaurant is adorable, so I recommend eating there rather than to-go. Wear a sweater on chillier evenings because there is no vestibule. Happy hour every night from 5-8 pm and free parking. Can't wait to return! read more
