While the street address is on W Fayette the main entrance is on Clinton. Very creative sandwiches. Had the Catfish po'boy which was delicious. Service is prompt so don't be dissuaded if there is a long line. There are a limited number of tables and sofas if you are dining in

I love the concept here- rotating sandwich menu every few weeks to keep it exciting! I got D's Maryland Monroe. It was pretty good, but I was expecting the chicken to be hot/warm instead of cold. The bread seemed a little hard as well. All that aside, there was a ton of chicken on my sandwich and the sweet chili sauce was such a great addition! The French onion soup was delicious and perfect for a snowy day in Syracuse. The caprese pasta salad was very rich, but wish it had more tomatoes. I told them it was my first time & they gave me a free drink, and all of the staff were very friendly. The shop wasn't too big, I got there around 1pm and seating was limited, so something to be aware of! I'd definitely go back to try a new sandwich and the buffalo mac (they sold out by the time I got there).

For the longest time I'd been meaning to try this place and today was finally the day! Making my pick was easy as I usually get anything turkey and D's Birds of Pear-adise had the added benefit of having fruit! A nice balance of sweet & savory. As someone who's a fiend for sweet things, I did want a bit more pear but that's just me! Once you make a sandwich on Pasta's stretch bread you've sold me! I'll definitely be back to try their other sandwiches and sides!

From Destiny (Mall) to Darwin down the creek path to sandwich nirvana. Dave & Daryl care about making good sandwiches. Made the walk down to their friendly shop today to see about the hype. It's real and it's fantastic (Seinfeld ref). Here's my three things: 1) They have the hits Lobster Roll, Cuban, The Georgia, The Mojo, and the Meatball. Then they rotate a two week revolving list of sandwiches. Today I had the Mufetta and the Italian meats and cheeses were fantastic. Bread was perfect and soffrito spread went perfect. Highly recommend. 2) Took some sour pickles as a side and they were salty and sour but do not have any dill flavor so don't expect it. Unique taste. 3) Shop is kitschy, clean and the staff was super friendly and helpful. Come on bye they want you to check them out.

I love this place. If you're in the area and looking for lunch, I recommend stopping by. We went here for lunch, and I loved it. The decor in here is very cute and cozy. They have lunch specials weekly; their menu is always changing, which is very exciting. I love their drinks and specials. Their sandwiches have an array of toppings and options you can add. They also have outdoor seating available too. I can't wait to stop back in for more sandwich specials.

This is the type of place that makes me wish I worked downtown (and during business hours). It's highly regarded and well known to be one of the best lunch spots. As soon as you walk in, you get this comfortable feeling that makes you want to be a regular... like you want everyone there to know you when you walk in the door. It's a glimpse into a life I've never had, where you're free and available at the time and place everybody wants to actually be. We've only been a few times, but enough to know whatever you order will be worth it. Just the Pasta's bread alone could turn a PB&J into a five-star meal. I always remembered them being a little higher priced than I was comfortable with. Maybe all it took was just not doubling their prices over the last four years, because $12.00 sandwiches seemed like a reasonable deal when we just stopped by. This time we ordered the Birds in Pear-A-Dise and the Otto Banh, then threw in some BBQ Chicken Pasta Salad, Alfredo Bacon Potato Salad, and whatever their mac and cheese was that day (I forgot to write that one down and now it's changed). Seriously, the Pasta's bread. It's not even their product, but the sandwiches have to be twice as good because they're using it. I was specifically craving some Banh Mi, so as soon as I opened the menu, I saw this option and case closed. My girlfriend and I usually go halfsies on stuff like sandwiches if we're both into them, so I tried both. Even when specifically craving Banh Mi, I still liked the other one better. The meat was regular soft deli pork. It had the fixings like the cilantro, carrots and cucumbers, but the hot pepper mayo wasn't what they should have added. It took all the banh mi vibes out of the sandwich and replaced it with something that made no sense. The Birds in Pear-A-Dise had the same deli feel with the turkey. It was thick cut deli turkey, like the kind you'd buy in a fully wrapped thick-cut heel from the grocery store. At first, all I could taste was the turkey. The raspberry mayo, the pear slices and the brie were a subtle presence that just made the thick turkey feel even wetter. The more I ate, the more those subtle flavors crept in until they carried the whole thing to the finish line. Even when the complex flavor profile came to fruition, there was still something weird about the execution. The raspberry mayo never really came through, and the pear slices were shingled horizontally which needed to be managed with every bite. We couldn't decide on the sides, so we ordered three. The BBQ Chicken Pasta Salad was wet. I mean we opened that thing and both said "Holy crap, that's wet." The noodles were structurally sound and took the creamy sauce by the reins. It was off the beaten path, but easily one of my favorite pasta/mac salads in a while. We concluded that all pasta/mac salad should be this wet, but only if you can pull it off like this. The Alfredo Bacon Potato Salad was so potent. Exactly the flavor profile we wanted, and we usually go for over-flavored, but at times this was like eating straight brie. It was the only thing we finished completely on the first run, because we couldn't stop coming back to it. The mac and cheese was about average. The cheese was thickened pretty hard, gritty to the point where you could feel the flour forming a sort of paste. I wouldn't normally go for that but it worked with the shells and the flavor. We ordered too much, and this was the weak link in our meal, so it fell to the back of the table and I honestly can't recall much about it. This place has been around forever, and they are notorious for their rather sophisticated lineup of lunch items. This is one of the easiest five-stars I could hand out in terms of food, uniqueness, price and atmosphere. I think my high expectations left me a bit staggered when everything wasn't perfectly in order. I can't tell if it's happy or sad that they change their menu so often. I want to try everything they make, but that also means I'm missing stuff every time I don't go there! Life is pain.

This has been on my list to try for a while, but I don't get downtown often. When my husband had a random middle-of-the-week day off, I suggested picking up sandwiches here. Bonus: they were participating in Dining Weeks! Street parking can be tough downtown, especially during the lunch time rush. I got lucky and found a spot and walked into the office building where the restaurant is housed. There was a line about 10 people deep and I thought "oh no I'm going to be here forever!" To my surprise, the line moved quickly and I had my food within 10 minutes. Phenomenal service! There was also some nice acoustic live music happening, which added a nice ambiance. I got the Ships in the Night sandwich, which has fresh mozzarella, marinated portobellos, roasted tomatoes, pesto and creamy balsamic on pastabilities stretch bread. Delicious! My husband had the Tuskafarian. He said it was very good, but liked mine better! I thought $15 for a sandwich, chips and a fountain drink was a pretty good deal! I was so eager to eat, that I forgot to take photos of the food. Their side dishes sound so good and unique, so I will definitely be back to try those!

I've been here before a few times. Service is always fast always friendly! I love this place there's tables available to eat in or take out. Parking is very convenient too. I love the Syracuse feel when you enter. I ordered the chicken and biscuits they were delicious! Ordered a poutine on the ritz sandwich served on Pastas stretch bread very tender roast beef dipped in gravy. That sandwich rivaled Monica's moist sandwich from Friends. Garlic parm potato salad was amazing and Nashville Mac n cheese also amazing! Can't wait to go again!

Incredible, delicious, and fun. They always offer a special that includes a drink and chips, and the menu changes weekly. The staff is ALWAYS friendly. I highly recommend coming in for lunch anytime you can. They are only open for lunch during the week, so it might be hard to frequent. Take off work or something, 100% worth it :) read more

I underestimated Darwin when my friends would talk about it. Then I finally went for lunch and wow it was good. My friend had me get something with an egg on top (don't remember the sandwich) but holy cow it was delicious. Portion wasn't as big as I hoped, but only half of it filled me right up, so no problems there. Cool little place right by everything. This place is a must and I do recommend it for sure! read more

This place is a revelation. I've never had ANYTHING bad here. I love it so much that I actually took 10 minutes of my life to figure out my long-lost Yelp password. If it were closer to the hill, it'd be perfect, but I'd also gain 15 pounds, since I can't resist any sandwich that comes with bacon. I will put anything these folks give me in my mouth, so it's a good thing they're all so nice! I had a sample of a new (to me) side today. 'Twice-baked' something. I didn't see the whole name, and I don't even care, it was delicious. The menu changes regularly, so if you have something that you love, write its name down! I'm trying to remember my favorites, but the only ones I can remember are the 3 Piggys (3 types of pig-derived meat, including bacon, and ALL delicious), Mojo Rising (Turkey, a fried egg, and probably bacon), and Son of a Preacher Man (turkey and COUNTRY-FRIED bacon!), which is the one I had today. You can't go wrong with anything here, including the sides. My usual side is the buffalo mac, but next time, I'll have to try that twice-baked business. Lastly, I don't get the folks complaining about the cost. A sandwich will run you $7-8 here, which may be expensive if you're used to McDonald's, but I'm pretty sure that a sandwich at PANERA costs about the same or more, and their food is boring as anything. Good ingredients cost more money than mass-produced crap food. No deli meat here! P.S. Vegetarians, fear not. Their veggie sandwich is delicious, according to my friends, and a regular on the menu, and their salads always look amazing. I haven't tried any of them because of my bacon thing, but I trust my friends' opinions. read more

If you don't know about Darwin yet.....you probably should....I mean if it's open, GO NOW! Easily one of the top sandwich places in all of Syracuse and surrounding areas. One of my personal favorites is the Chicken Vesuvio. The ingredients are always super fresh and the flavors are excellent. I have been going to Darwin since it opened and have never had a bad experience. The owner is almost always there and they always seem to remember my name :) They greet you with a "Hello, how are you" and a "Thank you for coming" every time. Highly recommended if you like great food and great service. read more

Best place for sandwiches in Syracuse! They have a rotating menu with weekly specials and all the food is great and obviously well thought out. Staff is very friendly. The only downside is that they're only open for lunch, otherwise I'd be here a lot more. They're currently moving to another location downtown that should be open soon. They also have an email list that you can sign up for to hear about their rotating specials. read more

Stopped by here on a lark while searching for apartments and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Right off the bat you see their inventive sandwich creations, one each for different kinds of meat/filling that rotate every few weeks. The staff is super friendly, and will gladly modify your sandwich order or build one to your liking from scratch. Our food was ready in what felt like 5 seconds, but it tasted like it had been lovingly crafted for hours. The decor and ambiance are the icing on top of the cake. Highly recommended. read more

5-Star sandwich restaurant. My friend and I were there yesterday for lunch and let me tell you that the food was absolutely great! I got the chicken sandwich which was recommended to me by the server... one of the best decisions in my life. There isn't much room to eat inside but outside they usually have tables setup if its nice out and there are always benches to the side. A great place to take a date for something causal. I would either recommend Darwin's or Street Eats if your looking for a sandwich place in Syracuse! read more

Excellent sandwiches and great service. Menu is not extensive, but changes biweekly and always includes a vegetarian option. More than your standard deli fare, combinations are proven, but still interesting. Salads, soup, chips and drinks also available. Seating is limited, but in the summer you can eat at tables outside or just walk across the street to Clinton Square. read more

Finally was able to try this place. I could never get over there when it was open because of my weird schedule and it's only open for lunch. However I'm so glad I did. The people there are super down to earth. They are quick for those who need to get back to work. I ordered the "birds in pear-a-dise". One of the sellers was the Pastabilities stretch bread, the mix of sweet and savory, and the over roasted turkey breast. For a small lady I ate the whole entire sandwich, it was that good. When I was checking out I wanted a drink as well and they informed me that because I got a drink a bag of chips would be no charge. Who doesn't love those words? Can't wait to be able to go back and try some of there other sandwiches! read more

I've never been one for sandwiches but his place will make you want to marry a sandwich just so you have it for the rest of your life! I haven't had a sandwich from here that I didn't like. You know a spot is good when they are open from 11am til 2:30pm. Only spots that know their worth can pull hours like that. I just wish they would open on the weekends. I live practically next door to Darwin's but have a hard time getting there since their hours are only for lunch. Today I had a meeting at City Hall and made sure to make a quick detour to Darwin's before heading back up the hill to work. I am so glad that I did. I got the Son of Preacher Man without mayo but with the chili sauce. All I can say is wow! When they say roast turkey they mean REAL roast turkey. None of that processed turkey meat you get a the deli counter at the grocery store. The country fried bacon is a nice twist as is the roasted tomato with Parmesan. read more

We are on a driving mission from Sarasota Lake to Watkins Glens, ready for some good lunch & Yelps reviews convinced us Darwin's was the spot. Awesome sandwiches, stacked fat with super fresh meats, veggies & cheese! I had the "Ships in the Night", TC had the NO/Jo Turkey & Tom had the Little Piggy went to Utica. I have never been to a better sandwich shop, probably because there is no better sandwich shop (certainly in Syracuse) Not only does Darwin have unbelievably creative and tasty sandwiches, but there service is incredible. However, one thing I don't think has been adequately reviewed and is often missed at Darwin is their incredible soups, which are a great accompaniment to their sandwiches. Go to Eva's or Dinosaur for dinner, but if you have on lunch to have in Syracuse, go to Darwin. My recommendation is to bring a friend split two sandwiches and at least one soup. read more

Yummy sandwiches with cool names. Went with my hubby, and 2 preteen nieces and they loved it. Well hubby was not impressed. He got the fish sandwich that really had no flavor but could hv used some sriracha. My niece got the Nojo and wanted to save half her sandwich for her parents--4 hrs away! :). Fast service. Limited seating but well worth the $9/sandwich due to tastiness and portion size. Will stop here again should our road trips bring us here again to Syracuse. read more

I tried this restaurant on a whim one day and have been at least once a week since. I remember feeling extra spontaneous and trying one sandwich that I otherwise wouldn't have and thinking it was the best sandwich I'd ever had. I don't even remember the name, but it was this beef sandwich on Pastas Daily Bread stretch bread with some sauce over it, but it was phenomenal. Now, I don't even mind the changing menu; I just assume that whatever they're selling that day is going to be good. read more

Hands down, best place to get lunch in SYR. They always mix it up, its always crowded, the service is great... and its just a lot of fun. The menu changes every two weeks and there's always something for everybody. I go each week, because I don't want to miss a thing. Darwin's isn't a place that you would look at and say "wow let's go there" but this place is worth going out of your way for. The sandwich I got was fresh, tasty, and overall one of the best sandwiches I've had in quite some time. This is a hidden gem of Syracuse and you are missing out if you don't give it a try. I just came back from a lunch take-out order during the work day with a colleague. My co-worker ordered the fried chicken sandwich special, which seems quite good and worth the $9 price. I got the Beef Martini, and if I was rating purely on that sandwich alone this would be a 1 or 2 star rating. The beef sandwich tastes good, for the parts that had beef--it was sliced thin and there were plenty of empty spots on the small 6" sandwich which was $10, without soda or chips. Quite disappointing. However, because my co-worker's sandwich was good, and also because the gentleman who handed us our sandwiches was GREAT, very friendly, customer-oriented, I'll stick with the 3 star rating. I'm eating a protein bar now so I can make it through the afternoon--glad I had one at my desk. read more

We stopped because of all of the great reviews. We had 'when doves fry' and 'pigs in a poncho' sandwiches and chicken and biscuits. Wow!! Everything was freshly prepared and the sandwiches were generous and were delicious, different combinations. The chicken and biscuits was also a generous portion with 4 half biscuits, lots of chicken in a flavorful gravy. Totally worth going twice around the block for a parking space... read more

Small restaurant with limited seating but that shouldn't deter you. Darwin's has some of the best sandwiches in Syracuse and the shifting menu is a great way to force yourself into trying something new. Solid service and reasonable prices. read more

If I were to pick one place to eat lunch in Syracuse, it would have to be Darwin. But if I had to pick one sandwich there, I don't know if I could. The Midnight Train to Georgia, the Hungry Like the Wolf, This Little Piggy Went to Utica, the lobster roll and so many others are just so good. Daryl, Dave and Mel will make you feel at home even if they are busy. And they will be busy. It's no secret that this little shop has the best sandwiches in town, but you'll be in and out quickly and you'll be very happy that you came. read more

I went here based on Yelp recommendations. I was pleasantly surprised to see a modern deli with an innovative menu in downtown Syracuse. The best part of my experience was the service- everyone I interacted with was friendly and helpful. This sounds like it should happen everywhere but it doesn't. It was evident that the staff liked their jobs. The sandwich I had was good. I would say it was similar in quality to the Blue Tusk. The buffalo Mac 'n cheese was ok: it was essentially farfalle noodles with hot sauce and blue cheese. The only other detractor was a lack of seating. It seems designed more as a grab and go for locals. However, I'd go back again based on a good sandwich and great service. read more

I didn't know this famous sandwich store until I'm leaving syracuse!! And it's so close to the dinosaur BBQ!!! I was so disappointed at myself finding it so late. I spent all my lunch time there several days before I left Syracuse. I went there at 10 am for my last meal in Syracuse. The guys told me that they were making preparations and were not able to provide sandwich within one hour!! So I left in hunger. Although they do open at 9:30 but they won't be able to offer foods until 11. Love their lobster roll, you could really see the shape of the lobster claw. Vegetable sandwich is also amazing!! Even though I don't like vegetable salads, I like their vegetable sandwich a lot!!! Hopefully I could get back one day and have their sandwich again soon!! read more

We are a division of RILEY'S (on Park St.) that specializes in bringing popular, gourmet sandwiches from around the country, right here to Syracuse. We roast our own meats, we make all of our sauces, soups & spreads from scratch. Our bread comes in from local bakeries fresh every morning. We buy all of our product/produce from local farms and other small businesses. Our menu changes every week to incorporate the latest recipes and the freshest ingredients. Office catering and delivery are also available with sufficient notice. We look forward to seeing you at the counter soon.

Established in 2010.

Darwin in the joint venture of Daryl McGrew & David Holtman... two friends with over fifty combined years of food service experience. We both have a passion for food, and with the help of co-owner Terry Riley we have succeeded in bringing that passion to the Syracuse downtown community. Having crossed the dreaded 3 YEAR anniversary hump, we are very proud of our customer base and repeat customer percentage. We are happy to know the majority of our customers by name and we are excited about the growth and expansion of our business. Stay tuned for new locations and recipes as we continue to work hard to continue bringing you classic dishes from around the country. Darwin is our first business venture.

Meet the Business Owner: Daryl M.

I started in the restaurant business at the age of twelve, bussing tables in my family's Italian restaurant. I fell in love with the business then, and have worked some aspect of the restaurant business ever since. I worked my way to a Business degree from Syracuse University while waiting tables at Syracuse's famed Riley's Restaurant. Upon graduation Terry Riley (Owner) helped me in getting Darwin open, a passion project of mine for many years. It's off to an amazing start, and continues to grow with each day, week, year... Darwin is my first business.

My cajun pasta was maybe a touch over but I was okay with it since it had my condiment obsession of chili crisp in it. The menu is well marked for dietary needs. A great thing of note is that they have women's, men's, AND an all-gender bathroom. I appreciate the inclusion in the food and restaurant itself. Car parking is street parking, it's accessible via the Centro bus system, and there is an artistic broken-chain shaoed bike rack just across the street from the restaurant. As for the brussels, when we first got to the restaurant our friends were sharing them. We tried one bite and knew we had order a whole plate for ourselves! They were literally the best brussel sprouts we've ever had. The roasted garlic aioli and grana cheese were topped on perfectly cooked brussels which I would go back for. I highly suggest checking out The Evergreen, go through their beer menu, and find a new favorite plate.

Sometimes it's missing something small, but then there's times where there literally isn't any salad dressing. Or, sometimes it's even the items you pay extra for, like avocado or a hard boiled egg. Today I found myself with a Chicken Cobb minus the chicken. I would order from here more if my orders weren't wrong 80% of the time, but there aren't many local quick-stop salad bars around. All in all: go and place your order in person, because there is a high chance your online order will be wrong. Otherwise, great salads and bowls!

We all ordered different types of steaks and 3 of 4 medium rare, one NY Strip medium. Ordered a side of Brussel sprouts and some other accompanying sauces. All 3 steaks came out in variations of well done - gross! On an even more disappointing note, we were told there is no more mashed potatoes, which is why we chose this place, and then told only 2 baked potatoes, so we had to decide who gets it and who doesn't. A TERRIBLE thing to happen at a steak restaurant, in addition to ruining what seemed to be quality steaks. The Brussel sprouts came out overly well done drenched in their sauce. Bite into any of them and they were totally deflated and not good. We couldn't even eat it. We asked to have it removed from the bill, which they did. Regardless, we dropped $430, including a $70 tip (because I am generous... waitress should have done a lot more for us when noticing the quality of what was served to us) for the 4 of us, with only 3 main meals. Just a real poor experience. I'm hoping this was just an isolated happening, but completely upset it happened to us for my daughter's graduation, son's 25th Bday and our 27th Anniversary. All that weekend. Advice to owner: please ensure you have enough product for your reservations. We were not walk-ins. Then, listen to the customer's request for how they prefer their steaks to be cooked and serve as ordered. 8pm reservation should not make a difference from a 6pm. I'm just really disappointed and wish we went to Ts instead, but liked the idea of smaller and more intimate.

If you are in downtown Syracuse and are looking for a good lunch spot, PLEASE go to Darwin! It is my favorite and go-to place. I used to work nearby, and would find myself there 3+ times per week. They have at least 3 different soups everyday, so there is bound to be something you like. A bowl of the (delicious, homemade, fresh) soup is only $5 and comes with a delicious piece of Pasta's stretch bread as well! On top of it all, the owners and whole crew are all so friendly and make the experience great. Its also fun to see what the rotating sandwich specials are! A great price, location, and atmosphere. This place was really good. The service was really good and the food was great. The only thing I didn't really care for were their working hours, they are hardly even open, and the place is really small. I also did not see a bathroom, which is weird for a restaurant, but I think they treat it more like a deli. And I really didn't care for how unkept the place is. They really could use a cleaning and perhaps even a renovation. If they would do that, or find a better location, this place would be awesome. And I have to say the prices are not too bad. read more

The best sandwich shop in Downtown Syracuse! and I mean that! Just wish I could get there more like I used to when I worked downtown. Sandwiches were also fresh and made with "real" ingredients. What a great little find. We were walking around Cassis as we had a few hours to spare before heading to St Tropez and before we knew it, it was lunch time. The restaurant was off the touristy trail, down a side road but was easy to find since there were tables and chairs on the pavement/road. This gem has some of the best sandwiches in syracuse. Very filling and tasty and the best part is you can always get new things, every couple of weeks or so they change up their menu. The only problem with that is one week you could love something the next it could be gone, but no worries, most of the time they will repeat favorites. Love this place. Probably my favorite sandwich in Syracuse. Always good and they're always super nice. Sandwiches are expensive but also huge so they're usually two meals for me. I'd eat here everyday if I could. read more
