This was a bit of a letdown for me relative to expectations. DC is supposed to be a great town for Ethiopian food, right? Not so much with this spot. The dining room is wonderful and cozy, perhaps a bit too snug for the number of tables in a small space. But it's in a great neighborhood and it's a great room to enjoy a meal. Hostess was curt, bordering on impatient, since the restaurant was really busy and there weren't any tables for the several groups that all had reservations. After a lengthy wait, despite being on time for our reservation, we were seated. The menu is standard familiar Ethiopian favorites. We ordered a veggie sampler and a chicken dish and a beet salad. So let me first say that everything tasted fine. injera was not quite a sour as I prefer, but it was thin and very fresh. The veggie sampler was nice and I'm always grateful for the chance to try lots of tastes. First problem was the chicken dish. Twenty bucks and it contained one single drumstick in a big bowl of onion gravy. One. Piece. Of. Chicken. It tasted lovely but seriously. Salad was also tiny. Almost comical. So the verdict overall was meh. I had hoped for flavors my neighborhood Ethiopian place couldn't deliver. What I found was food slightly less intense (dumbed down for a white patron's palate?) and disappointingly small portion sizes. Skip this one. I know there must be amazing experiences in less fancy pants Ethiopian restaurants elsewhere in DC. read more

The outdoor patio at Das still feels Buzzy, but it's also the perfect way to spend a warm evening in DC. There are lots of Ethiopian options to choose from in DC as well as other major cities, but it isn't until trying several that you realize how delicious the food here truly is! Our favorite is always the misir wot, which has the deep spice of berbere and the heartiness of lentils. Had some duperb vegetarian Ethiopian dinner at Das. Since all the vegetarian entre dishes sounded wonderful. I went for the sample combo platter and each dish was absolutely amazing and just bursting with flavor. The chickpea dish had to be my absolute favorite. The staff was ultra sweet ..even though we got there just 10 minutes before closing they he graciously seated us and let us stay for as long as we wanted with some amazing service. My first time trying Ethiopian food and really enjoyed it! Das is a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant and so while it is quite "fancy" with white tablecloths, expensive wine, limited seating, and a coat check, the beautiful contrast of digging into the food with your hands is quite fun and I love that it gives Ethiopian food a high-end platform and recognition. The service was excellent - our server recommended the best dishes after asking about our dietary preferences, and they were able to do a smaller vegetarian sampler plate for me separately. The injera was chewy, glutinous, and so satisfying for picking up the savory and spiced curries. My personal favorite was the yellow lentil dish - it was not too spicy but still very flavorful and kept you going back for more. Definitely recommend Das but make sure to make a reservation as it can become very crowded very quickly! read more

I've had ethiopian food in NYC before but I think this restaurant was amazing food quality wise. Taste was so good and not as 'dry' as what I had in NYC. Service was really slow though -- they were extremely packed so I guess that's reasonable. The place looked very family friendly as we saw a huge party with kids who was around for longer than us! Service was absolutely horrendous. We had reservations at 730pm and got there at 715. The woman working the front absolutely did not care about any reservation times. So many of us waiting for a table for 2 and bypassing everyone that needed a table 2 for a party of 4 or more. We finally get seated at 820pm when we told them we were ready to order someone said they would come back and never did. We just walked out at 840 because that was such a ridiculous experience. The woman upstairs deserves all the praise though. She tried so hard to work the whole room by herself. read more

Overhyped and underwhelming pricey food! Das didn't measure up to its longtime Bib Gourmand Michelin star. The Das Combination Vegetarian Entree Sampler missed the mark. While there were a nice variety of lentils and vegetable dishes in the sampler, they were doused with oil or too spicy to enjoy. The Eggplant, Red Lentils, and Shiro Wat were super spicy while the Gomen collard greens and Tikil Gomen cabbage were coated in oil. The flavorful Kik Alicha yellow split peas was the highlight followed by the Ethiopian Harvest Vegetable specialty of green beans and carrots in stewed tomato sauce. As I threw in the towel on most of the dishes in the platter, I ordered a side of the Kik Alicha, and left a clean empty bowl. The tender Lamb Tibs were overcooked and very fatty, hubby threw in the towel after a few bites. While it's nice to be served rolls of complementary spongey injera, it's not particularly impressive because the squishy bread isn't made in house and quietly outsourced to another vendor. The honey wine had a sour aftertaste and is infused with honey and not made of honey like mead. The restaurant doesn't make any of the wine. While the food was subpar (3/5), the service was the kicker and soured the experience. When I called to make a reservation, the staff curtly informed they were booked up. There were plenty of tables available online, so I made an online reservation around 5pm. When I arrived to my surprise, there were MANY open tables inside and outdoor the restaurant. It started to get crowded around 6:30pm. While it was nice for the female staff to push the stroller to help pacify our stroller, my hubby noticed that they were mildly annoyed by the baby (we ate on the patio), eager to turn over the table, and gave us unsolicited advice. Slapping on a white tablecloth and using tongs to service injera that's not even house-made with prime Gtown zip code doesn't give the restaurant any star power. I'm truly baffled. We spent $100+ in less than an hour and left disappointed. Zenbech in Adams Morgan is the BEST place for Ethiopian food in DC (even better than Dukem!) read more

A star among Ethiopian restaurants even after so many years and an all time fav. Every time I come to Washington DC, I cannot resist the temptation to have a meal there. Classy casual setup, super friendly staff, a table to table welcome tour by the chef, and most importantly an unparalleled display of most delicious food - ranging from meat to vegetarian samplers, or itemized selections. The sampler provides a wonderful combination of a little bit of everything. Best for the undecided, but also best for the decided ones. P.S. Wow, just wow! This was my first time trying Ethiopian food and I was blown away. I can see how they made it on Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand list. Service was excellent, nice ambiance and the food was absolutely mind blowing! The right way to eat Ethiopian food is with your hands and you basically eat everything with the Ethiopian bread, injera. Be very careful, this bread may look light but it is extremely filling and expands in your stomach. We had the pleasure of dinning with some Ethiopian folks which taught me the right way to eat the food. First and foremost, wash your hands, then, tear a piece of the injera (be the sure the holes on the bread face up) and use it to pick up the food. Food is eaten family style. I honestly have no idea what I ate but it seemed we ordered basically everything on the menu. Every single thing was so damn good! For starters, the most memorable item was the mushrooms (ingudai tibs) with Kaisa (mild Ethiopian cheese). Omg, I can literally eat this all day, every day. For the main entree, we had everything from chicken, beef, fish, beef tartare, literally everything. For desserts, I was surprised to see so many Italian dishes. According to the owner, Ethiopian cuisine is highly influenced by Italians (not sure if I heard that correctly).... I, of course, had to order one of my favs, the tartufo which is a chocolate ball shell filled with three types of ice cream, pistachio, strawberry and vanilla. Uff! Phenomenal. You HAVE to order an entree - cannot share.... Even if you're not hungry and want to split a dish, nope. You have to order your own entree. I'm sorry - I just DO NOT understand this new rule? No cocktail menu but you can "order whatever you want" but there really is no bartender so if it's a cocktail the server doesn't know how to make then... well.. then just order something else. Oh and you'll find yourself hard pressed to find a server who cracks a smile... they all seem to excude a "I don't want to be here" vibe that's such a downer!! The most tasty vegetarian food in town ( I am not a vegetarian but veggies compose of 80% of my in take) ! The special bread was fresh out of the oven and so soft. Amazing flavoring! Das is the "fancy" Ethiopian restaurant. The food is as good as other places, but the price is going to be somewhat higher. The location is nice, so it's a good date place, especially if the weather is good for outdoor eating, and they have a good beer and wine selection. No complaints about the service. Overall, it's where I take fancier out of town friends who aren't going to love a more hole in the wall experience, or for a date, combined with a walk in Georgetown! read more

People know when coming to DC, going to an Ethiopian restaurant is a must. While I've been to multiple, this was my first time checking out Das. They do not offer reservations outside but if you make a reservation you have priority for outside seating which is first come first serve. It is in Georgetown and has great outdoor ambiance, as the sub comes down they use light up umbrellas and tour water cup is never empty. The vegetable Sambusas were delicious especially with the sauce and the vegetarian platter with an order of special beef ribs and the fish were enough for four people. Don't forget to eat the injera that has all of the sauce soaked up, that's the be part. Lastly, we paired the meal with the traditional honey wine and they even kept in cool with a holder at the side of your table. read more

For our main dish we got the Das chicken and beef combo, veggie combo, and lamb. I'd skip the lamb since it was pretty dry but I definitely recommend the combos so you can try a variety of different flavors. Best thing about this place is their service! Left still hungry - a first for me at an Ethiopian place. I had been here before a few years ago. They have cut the portions way down. I guess they want you to get appetizer and desert. one of the best Ethiopian food I've had in the dmv area ! i really liked the chicken doro kay wat and the vegetarian sample platter! it is definitely smaller portions than what I was used to in other Ethiopian places but it was still very good. we walked in without a reservation at 5:30pm on a Thursday evening and we were able to find seating but as we started eating the restaurant became quite packed and some people had to queue up outside the restaurant so highly recommend making a reservation! read more

This was my first experience eating Ethiopian food and it was delicious! We ordered the short rib house special, beef tartar, and veggie platter to share, along with extra Ethiopian bread. I would definitely love to try Ethiopian food again. The only reason this wasn't a five star experience for me was that the restaurant is two levels and the AC was broken on the first floor and they wouldn't seat customers on the second floor. They said that the second floor was only open on weekends. Normally I would understand this, but given that the AC was broken and it was a 90° day it would have made it much better for all the customers if they had closed the first floor instead. read more

We trusted the waiter to order for us and she proposed the vegetarian and meat platter along with a white wine pairing. The vegetarian platter was delicious. I loved the variety of lentils and vegetables, all which were perfectly tender and eaten directly with the bread (no utensils needed). My favorite dish was the chicken on the meat platter which was packed with flavor. We finished with some ~Italian~ desserts which really hit the spot. Haven't eaten much Ethiopian food before but it was amazing!! - the sambusas were phenomenal, not too oily, and the dipping sauce was probably the best thing I ate here 10/10 - potato salad was really light and refreshing - the entree sampler was actually super filling, the yellow split lentils and chickpea dish were probably my favorites!
