It's Hillcrest so good luck with parking. Service was quick. You can make reservations online. Their crispy salmon rice is a great starter. Of our dishes, the sushi rolls are what I would order. In particular, the Kraken, oyabun, and point break rolls.

We got Dashi to go after craving some sushi on a hot day. There have been soooo many sushi flops in the north park area, but I was happy to see this newer spot had great reviews. We ordered a few rolls, karaage, and miso soup. Everything arrived fresh and delicious, even the miso soup was still hot. Something that really stood out was the freshness and quality of the ingredients as well as how nicely cooked the sushi rice was. This place will definitely be seeing us again!

What a great experience with Dashi! I got some takeout and had heard good things about this spot. Everything was fresh & flavorful. The rice ratio was perfect and rice cooked to perfection! When I walked in at opening, there wasn't anyone there yet and all of the staff greeted me so nicely. It's a really pleasant environment inside with good natural light & a cool, modern aesthetic. I'll definitely return to eat at the restaurant next time.

This place rocked !! Great customer service and excellent quality sushi. No complaints. Nice ambiance inside with cool wall art. The servers were helpful and personable! We would come back.

Came here on a Friday evening and got seated outside. We ordered chicken karage and Mac n cheese as they both tasted pretty good. We had 3 sushi rolls that filled us up. We really loved the spicy Mr.Miyagi roll! Small indoor dining room so I wouldn't recommend bringing a large group since the space is small but overall a great place to get sushi for date night.

The rolls are so dang tasty and unique! The quality of the fish is super high quality as well. The salmon was delicious and fatty and the sea bream was soooo good. Very unique rolls! Just wish they could make it a bit faster. There were only 2 tables in the restaurant with people and it took a while to get our food, wonder how long it takes when the restaurant is packed. The service is amazing tho shoutout to the servers! We ordered the salmon crispy rice, the Miso Tai roll, and the Oyabun roll. My favorites were the two rolls. The best part about the miso tai was the sea bream and the lemon sauce. It was a bit spicy from the spicy tuna. The Oyabun roll was the best I loved every part about it especially the torched salmon.

We got 2 sushi rolls and a gyoza order. My daughter rated it 4/5. The jalapeño roll has fresh jalapeños so it is spicy but it was pretty good. Service was quick and the bathrooms were clean. It's a nice location but on the smaller comfort side. So don't expect to bring a bring crew with you.

My husband and I came by on a Sunday evening. Place was busy but we were seated in about 10 mins. Sushi was so good! Very fresh and the flavors of the rolls really compliment each other. Service was really good too and the place is small but plenty of seating. Would definitely come back for sushi. We had their most popular: salmon crispy rice, point break which was very flavorful!

I was super stoked to dine at DASHI, as I've heard only great things about them from my friends. Surprisingly the bar was comfortable and spacious for all of our items. I wanted to try various items, which will have to be divided into different visits, because I really enjoyed everything! Salmon Crispy Rice (4/5): Perfect appetizer of chopped salmon piled on top of crispy rice patties and topped with tobiko and aioli. Monkfish (4/5): Their serving size is very generous, and the texture of monkfish was creamy. This was one of their specials! Scallop Nigiri (5/5): The scallops were so soft and melts in your mouth! Sashimi Flight (5/5): Every single slice of fish was extremely buttery, and I received Salmon, Tuna, and two other white fish. Hillcrest Roll (4/5): A protein style roll, with a variety of fish and wrapped neatly in cucumber and dressed in ponzu. So delicious! I am SO looking forward to revisiting DASHI! Their menu is unique, plus their quality of seafood is more than your casual sushi restaurant. The plating was thoughtful, the food presentation looks neat, and most importantly, everything was delicious!

Finding good sushi in San Diego can feel like a gamble... this place was a very welcome surprise. Everything we ordered was fresh, well-balanced, and actually thoughtfully put together, flavors that that worked. The Calamari was light and crispy (not greasy), and that dipping sauce was one of those "don't waste a drop" situations. The sushi itself hit that perfect middle ground between creative and classic... nothing gimmicky, just really solid execution. Atmosphere was clean, relaxed, and easy to settle into without feeling rushed. Service was friendly and attentive. Adding it to the regular rotation!

We finally made it to this new sushi spot everyone is talking about. I love that this new place changed the vibe of the corner of 5th and university. We came on a Saturday, very busy and waited 30min for a table (worth the wait ). We sat at the bar and we shared an omakase plate and Karagi chicken. The sushi was fresh, melt in your mouth! And they served it with real wasabi. The chef gave us a sample of a fish to try, it was so good! Ambiance: 5* Food: 5* Location: 5* Prices: very reasonable Definitely one of my favorite sushi spots in SD.

My fiancée and I came to Dashi to celebrate our anniversary, and it was the perfect place for the occasion. We've been coming here since their soft opening and have visited several times over the past year, and every visit reminds us why we keep coming back. We were seated immediately at the bar, even without a reservation (though I'd definitely recommend making one, as it's been quite busy on previous visits). Sitting at the bar ended up being one of the highlights of the evening because we got to chat with the chefs, including the owner and head chef, Aries. We started with the miso soup, which was delicious, followed by the salmon crispy rice and a selection of sashimi. Everything was outstanding, but the salmon crispy rice has officially become our go-to appetizer. If it's your first visit, don't skip it! For our main course, we ordered the nigiri sampling, which included bluefin tuna, yellowtail, salmon, and two chef's choice pieces. After our sashimi course, Aries asked which fish stood out the most. We both immediately said the bluefin tuna, and he customized our order of nigiri such that the chef's choice selections were centered around that. One piece was toro belly (which I happily let my fiancée enjoy since that's her favorite), and the other was a marinated bluefin tuna that was one of the best bites I've had. Aries even took the time to show us how the tuna was cut and prepared, which made us appreciate the craftsmanship behind every piece even more. When he asked how we liked the chef's choice, we each admitted we wished we could have tried the other's piece. To our surprise, and without hesitation, he prepared two more so we could both experience each one. That level of hospitality and genuine enthusiasm is something you simply don't find everywhere. This is a sushi lover's dream. It's obvious that Aries and his team aren't just running a restaurant, but rather, they're passionate about the art of sushi, and that passion comes through in every interaction and every bite. Hillcrest is incredibly lucky to have a place like Dashi. We already know we've been a few times before but we know we'll be back many more times, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Come here!!! Everyone come one come all to one of the best sushi restaurants in hillcrest!! I have been driving past this place since August, saying I wanted to go and omg omg I am so glad I did. This is gonna be my new local spot! The miso mac and cheese is amazing and could've been a meal! I kinda wish I hadnt ordered a full meal outside of the mac and cheese. I got two rolls based on our amazing waitress's recommendation- the lemon glow and the oyabun! The lemon was my favorite. So flavorful My two companions got sashimi and nigiri - cut to perfection and were delicious! We walked in at 5:30 to a semi empty restaurant, but by the time we left every table inside and out and the sushi bar were packed. It was so good. I can't wait to come again.

I really appreciated that she took the time to understand what I liked instead of simply choosing something for us and her recommendation was lovely. The food is more about beautiful little bites designed to pair with the wine, rather than large portions. The toast was crispy golden bread served with a creamy, herby spread and bright orange salmon roe.The colors, textures, and presentation were absolutely beautiful. The combination of wine, small bites, attentive service, trees, and the rain falling around us created such a memorable experience. It's a small space, but it has so much character and charm. Definitely a place for slowing down, enjoying good wine, sharing beautiful bites, and taking in the atmosphere.

Parking is a nightmare good luck finding parking within a mile of the restaurant. Pros: atmosphere, drinks, service Cons: food wasn't great for the price, restaurant was small and crowded, no parking Service: All of our servers were friendly and very accommodating. Gave us some knowledge on the menu and recommended cocktails based on our preference. I had spilled my drink and they were quick to make me another one. Food: I had intended to get the prime ribeye cap steak but they ran out for the night around 8pm. I shared the steak sampler which came with four different cuts of steak and 4 sauces. I ordered medium and it was cooked medium/medium rare which was fine with me, it also had a good sear, almost burnt though. Out of the four steaks, we only liked two based off flavor and tenderness. The other two were more tough and gamey. None of the sauces really stood out but the bordelaise and horseradish were good. For our sides we got fries, roasted broccoli, and the grilled wedge salad. Fries were average. The roasted broccoli had really good flavor, I expected the broccoli to be al dente but it was cooked to mush and drenched in sauce. The grilled wedge salad was decent, there was a slightly bitter taste to it. I know it says grilled wedge but the experience of biting into the salad and it being both hot and cold was not pleasant. Cocktails: I tried the Honey Ryder and New Wave. These were recommended as the more fruity/sweet cocktails. You can definitely taste the alcohol but it's only 2oz so it's not too strong. Ambience: 10/10 I got seated downstairs by the bar. Only thing about downstairs is that it's too dark to take photos unless you use flash. Overall, I agree with the other reviews saying to go just for drinks and appetizers. I would go again just to sit upstairs and get drinks and take pictures. We left unsatisfied and ended up getting in-n-out after.

There is a "happy hour" on Monday but it's called Ouster Monday, oysters are $1 and they have different specials that are not offered on the normal happy hour. Got the crispy chicken wings, Wagyu longaniza, and burger The chicken wings were very crispy and came topped with a jalapeño relish. The relish had a citrusy taste to it or maybe it was the liquid from the pickled jalapeños. I liked the crispness of the chicken but I think the relish was too acidic for me. The Wagyu longaniza was my favorite, very strong beefy flavor. It came on top of salsa matcha which i thought was very tasty so much that I dipped the wings and burger in the sauce. The slice of radish on top gave it a nice texture and crunch. I see the Wagyu hotdog is offered on the oyster Monday special so I'm gonna have to come back and try that for sure. The burger was cooked nicely, medium as requested. It came topped with an egg, truffled onion jam, and cheddar cheese. The bun was nicely toasted and the egg and cheese added a nice rich element to it but I didn't care for the onion jam, it gave the burger an overall sweet profile. I'd simply ask for it without next time. Over all a solid burger, maybe I'd add bacon too. I also had a margarita which was on happy hour special. I asked for it to be spicy and they added a tajin rim which was nice. Spicy and refreshing! Parking is all on the street so I had to part a few blocks away. Overall a solid happy hour. I'll be back on Oyster Monday for the hot dog and fish collars.

Unfortunately, the response from the hostesses was pretty snarky. He was told those tables were no longer available and that we would sit where they had put us. It wasn't so much that they couldn't accommodate our request--it was the way they spoke to him that really bothered us. Our waitress came by and overheard us talking about what had happened. She already seemed very stressed and overwhelmed and said she would come back. Thankfully, a few minutes later, the manager came out and moved us to a great table inside, which we really appreciated. I completely understand how stressful restaurant work can be. I worked as a waitress for many years, and I know how exhausting constant requests and customer complaints can become. But even on stressful days, I would never have spoken to customers the way those young women spoke to my husband. We're grateful that the manager stepped in and took care of us, and the evening ultimately worked out. Unfortunately, that initial interaction left a bad impression and was difficult to forget.
