Yes five bucks is steep for a dog, but this is really quality stuff, and enough hotdog that you need not order more than one. So, I think its worth what it costs. I've been here about 4-5 times and it's always amazing! Delicious! The shop is very small with a majority of it's seating outside. It reminds me of those hole-in-the-wall places you'd find in NYC. Don't let it size or appearance fool you, Dat Dog really is one of the best places to eat in New Orleans! My favorite is the Louisiana Hot Sausage, but I've tried a lot of their dogs and they're all very good. As others have said, the sourdough buns really stand out, they're fresh baked from a bakery in the area. They offer a wide variety of toppings and they're all included in the price of your dog which is nice. The chili cheese fries are some of the best in town. Dat Dog is the first word out of my mouth. Don't be fooled into thinking this is just any old hot dog stand. Oh no. This is the hot dog stand of the gods. You first choose your meat from a perfect selection of sausages (local and international). As someone who actually hates regular hot dogs, I've never thought of substituting sausage (something I love). Sausage is bigger, more flavorful and way more satisfying. But if you like regular hot dogs, they have those too. And vegetarian hot dogs for those who fancy vegetables. They load your meat onto a HEAVENLY bun. It melts in your mouth. It is quite possibly the best breaded concoction to come from this city since McKenzie king cakes. The bread is amazing. Finally you have a huge list of condiments to smother your dat dog with. Amazing. Also delicious are the french fries. The normal fries are great, but try the fries with toppings. Etouffe fries are unique and very delicious. I must also recommend their homemade sodas. Great place to hang out and enjoy good food. I'm pretty simple so I tried a bratwurst with mustard. Sausage had a great flavor, good char and was a good size. The bun though! So soft and delicious! Very happy with my order. Roommate got a spicy sausage fixed "chefs choice" and it looked to be a lot of peppers, jalapeños and hot sauce. He loved his as well. One order of fries (nicely spiced so don't need ketchup!) was more than enough for us to split. I see us coming back here a lot this summer. Atmosphere is casual and relaxed and welcoming. A no frills eatery that specializes in serving hot dogs and sausages. Between the different types of hot dogs and sausages they serve, as well as the myriad of toppings available, it is safe to say you could eat here 50 times and never have the exact same combination twice. I had the hot Louisiana Sausage, which was perfection. Flavorful ground meat with just a hint of heat in a sausage casing, that had that delightful snap when you bit into it. Served on a toasty hot dog roll. I have to admit I was pretty pedestrian when it came to toppings. Just some mustard, ketchup and diced onions. But the next time around I will take the plunge with more adventurous toppings...They have wasabi listed as a topping. How crazy is that? I did not have their french fries, but from what I understand, they will top the fries however you want them. Chili, cheese, whatever. Be warned though. The place is on the small side and the majority of the seating is outside. I was there a little after 8pm on a Tuesday night, the outside tables were occupied by the Dat Dog faithful, but I snagged a table inside. Also, they only accept cash, but have an ATM on premises. My favorite is the Crawfish-sausage (from the swamp) Creole mustard, onions, and mayo (just ask the DAT DOG team to dress it for you- they'll dress it to perfection). got the traditional pork hot dog and plain fries. As others have noted, the fries are a very generous portion and delicious. The hot dog was tasty, and the bun did not disappoint. The sauerkraut on top was awesome. Others have complained about the prices of the food, which I did not think were out of line. The $2 charge for a can of diet coke was a bit much. Next time I'll bring my own drink. Also the cashier kept pulling the money out of the tip jar and conspicuously counting it. Was that supposed to be subtle? I really like Dat Dog. The hot dogs are of a supurb quality with great toppings, weiners and sourdough buns. A typical dog is expensive, but don't let that fool you -- one dog fills you up about as much as two dogs from most other places. The sides are excellent as well, and are typically designed to serve at least two people. All of that said, two factors keep Dat Dog from getting my coveted five star rating: 1. Cash Only. You're talking about 3% for using a credit card. It's the kind of expense that should normally be integrated into the cost of doing business. Many times I've wanted to go to Dat Dog but didn't have the cash and didn't want to drive over to an ATM. 2. Limited indoor seating. I was very happy about the outdoor beer garden, but it's not really comfortable in the summer (or when it's raining). Unless you're getting a dog to go, you'll be sweating if you eat here most of the year. I wish they'd tried for more indoor seating. These are minor quibbles, though. Dat Dog is still hands down the best hot dog outfit in New Orleans, and you're nuts if you don't try them. I have been to both locations. I must be coming on off days because I enjoy it for a fun lunch, but I've never been wowed by it. No Vienna Beef dog is upsetting, but I digress. I love the variety of toppings. The buns are delicious but I always feel that the there is too much bun, not enough dog. I always get fries and they are always cold. The atmosphere is the key here. The old place was too cramped, the new place is terrific with a great German style beer garden. I give this place 3.5. With a touch more effort they could easily be a 4. I've been to Dat Dog twice and each experience has been delicious! Today I got an alligator dog with andouille sauce, guacamole, bacon, and jalapeños and I was far from disappointed. My companion got a smoked bratwurst with wasabi, creole mustard, and onions. Surprisingly the wasabi worked very well on such a classic sausage. We decided to try this place for a quick dinner last Saturday. Upon walking in we were greeting by several of the staff. The place has that new orleansy charm that I love. This time around we tried the crawfish dog, turduckin, smoked bratwurst, german beef, aligagtor and deep sea fried cod. We also ordered 2 drinks and an order of cheese fries... for a wopping $48. At $7.50 per dog their size in dogs has gone down a good bit. My German beef dog was the size of a normal hot dog from the grocery. And the rest weren't much bigger leaving me with more bun to meat ratio. I loved the crawfish, alligator and turduckin dogs. They were all very flavorful and delicious. The deep sea cod on the other hand is just a giant fish stick on a hot dog bun. I love the fact that you can dine with your dog. They have an area outside with a water station, hooks to tie up their leashes and even supply dog bones for your pooches. If you want to bring your pet visit "The Dog House" located on the outside by the side street. It will be a long time before we go back. read more

Oh, how I wish I was giving this place a five star review! We came in on a Monday at 12:30pm and the place was about 1/4 full. We ordered 3 dogs and one side of fries. Sat down and chatted for awhile, until we noticed that the party of 7 who had been in front of us in line had already eaten and left. After realizing we had been waiting for 30 minutes, I asked the runner to check on our order. He came back and told us it would be another 20 minutes! For 3 hot dogs and 1 fry?! We had places to be after this supposedly quick lunch stop, so I said I guessed we would need a refund so we could be on our way. He said he'd have the manager come over. Five minutes later, when no one had addressed us, I asked again, upon which the manager called out from behind the counter that he had voided our order as requested. Not really satisfied with that as the only response, we asked for an explanation and were told that they had to take "smaller orders" that came in after ours first. Once more - the order was three hot dogs and one side of fries! It was pretty obvious that our order had been misplaced, but instead of owning up to this and giving a genuine "so sorry", he went on to say that his runner had been wrong about the additional 20 minute wait - that in fact ours was next to be made but he'd have to charge us again. We declined that as we now really needed to get to the next appointment, however, I did ask for a copy of the credit, which led to him having to make a phone call to a higher up at a different location to attempt to figure that out. He never did, and another 10 minutes had now elapsed, so I ended up taking a photo of the void on his computer. We asked once more, nicely, to explain what happened. Here was another chance for him to display some customer service skills. Alas, instead we got a defensive speech about how busy they were and how sometimes this just happens. I literally couldn't eat it because it was black. The other orders were kind of burnt too but edible, mine was just completely black. The bun tastes like any cheap Walmart bun. The Crawfish Etoufee fries had like 2 pieces of micro-size crawfish. Also, it was $18 for two dogs. It is so expensive and not worth the money. I will not come back. I definitely plan to go back and try some of the other options though.
