This is the first restaurant we visited on a trip to New Orleans and, while it might not be obvious by the name, we still got the tastes for which New Orleans is known -- fried oysters, crawfish étouffée and more. Great atmosphere, with diners seated at picnic tables to watch the bustle on the road. Next time back I'll be trying the Chicago dog. read more

It's mostly outdoor seating, with the inside seating completely open. The outdoor seating is covered and very cute, a large area. They only had one dark beer on tap, but it is the south... so many options it was hard to choose! They even have vegan sausages! Lots of toppings including toppings made here. However, there being no description e steered clear. I had a house special, the Crawfish Etouffe Dog, because I wanted something fun and there were so many topping options. My husband had the alligator dog with bbq sauce, bacon, grilled onions and cheddar cheese. Both were delicious. We split the seasoned fries. Definitely a fun place, pricey for hot dogs, but these are specialty dogs. Seems a favorite with the young people, college and younger aged people here. The vegan banger is my favorite hot dog! It's deliciously flavorful so much so I never get a picture of it . Service is always in a timely manner! I have no complaints. I have NEVER expected to crave a hot dog in my life. I haven't eaten meat in 32 years, so hot dogs are not something that I seek. When my co-workers wanted to come here for HH, I figured that I would simply get fries and a soda. Little did I know, this cool little place had an apple, sage dog. Yall, this dog was on a soft, vegan bun, and the dog was smoked perfectly. My pregnant self had two, and I was in food heaven. Although my food was awesome, I had to deduct a star because of the setup. There was one cashier and one person serving the drinks. There was a long line damn near out the door, so to get another beer and/or cocktail, my co-workers had to stand in line again. The HH experience really sucked. At long last, I've found the hot dog of my dreams... No, I haven't gone over to the dark side of sausage. I'm still a vegetarian. Dat Dog just makes the best vegetarian dog I've ever had. It's gourmet. As in, they don't just grill a tofu pup (gross btw) and load it with fixings to disguise the taste. I believe it's tempeh, but I'll just have to go back and eat a bunch more of 'em to figure it out, because after one bite, I couldn't be bothered to do much investigating. It's *that* good. The long list of toppings are offered gratis, which is quite incredible. I loaded mine up with guac and jalapenos. As to the bun, it's a take on your classic, but bumped up a flavor notch or two. It's tiny- just a few tables inside and a couple more out front. Everything is reasonably priced- hot dogs are $5, sausages are $6, which includes toppings. Chili cheese fries are $3.50. There's not much for vegetarians- even the crawfish sausage contains pork. Those who frequent the Freret Street corridor have probably noticed the tiny yet brightly Simon Hardeveld painted building that's popped up between the apparently rarely open nursery and the reconstructing/revamping of identity Ensign storefront. Perhaps you were drawn in by the European flags waving merrily from the ceiling, the Hawaiian shirts of Loyola-student employees, or the friendly owners sitting on a bench calling you to come try a delicious Dat Dog. Or mayyyybe, you listen to Louisiana Eats on WWNO and have excitedly been following the opening of this German wieners meets New Orleans flavor endeavor ever since the broadcast, when the store was still in the midst of renovation. Dat Dog is the project of Skip Murray and Constantine Georges, NOLA born high school buddies, who combined Skip's former career as London's "hot dog guy", serving the International Little League a taste of a "real" American baseball game, with George's interest in the up-and-coming Freret neighborhood. The menu reads simple: your choice of specialty sausage (German bratwurst, Polish kielbasa, Louisiana crawfish, hot, or alligator), and a plethora of toppings. The French Fries are seasoned and crisp; a bottle of Coke or Barqs finishes off your cash-only meal. The wait isn't long, the service is friendly, and the proprietors are chatty, happy to retell their respective stories and hear your thoughts on the product. Which, I must now state as fact, is totally awesomely rad. This is the true all-American product: non-bastardized immigrant fodder meets Cajun ingenuity. My buddy's alligator sausage was topped with just about everything but wasabi. That is to say: ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, diced tomatoes, cheddar cheese, sauerkraut, chili, and andouille sauce. The thought of all that personally makes me ill, but he seemed to really enjoy it. I tend towards simpler flavor profiles so my smoked German bratwurst was merely topped with an artful squiggle of Creole mustard. The flavor and texture of the sausage is unbelievable; firm and supple with a burst of flavor (I'm realizing that one probably shouldn't talk about wieners in this way.... oh well). Again, the toasted sweet bread in lieu of bun complements the hot dog perfectly. One feature I would like to point out we have all raved about to this point is the bread that the hot dog comes in. No generic white-bread cookout bun here. The bread is grilled to a crisp toast, leaving the insides soft and a little chewy. It never breaks apart and soaks in all the toppings, providing a perfect hand-hold; the flavor is distinct but mild enough to complement the sausage, making for a wonderful eating experience (unlike barbecues of yore, when ketchup crumbled your bun). The fries are another highlight of the meals I've had here. Crispy and seasoned, I call these "un-curly fries" in my head; they have an additional flavor but are crisp and hot all around. You know what I'm talking about, when curly fries are all mushy in between when you pull them apart? Wait, no one else is bothered by that? Open till 12 AM on Fridays and Saturdays and 9PM most other nights (although closed Mondays), Dat Dog is the perfect addition to the Freret neighborhood. Over time, I've just realized that I'm annoyed that they raised their prices by a dollar across the board when they moved across the street, and they're still as busy as ever, and the food takes just as long as before, even with a bigger kitchen, and more seating. First is the tiny location that made things feel kind of cramped. Well that, my friend, is entirely over. Their new location (across the street from the old one) is spacious and beautiful with tons of outdoor seating. Inside there are more tables and a very nice sized bar. So what's the other thing keeping it from being five stars? Cash Only. In this day and age why deal only with cash? I almost never carry cash, even vending machines take my debit card. Yum, hot dogs. It's divey and it's hippy and it's full of delicious gourmet hot dogs. I had a german smoked bratwurst with onions and cheese (there's a variety of toppings you can choose from). I generally don't like to put anything on my hot dogs just because I want to have the opportunity to taste the dog itself. This hot dog was awesome, and the buns that they use (steamed and toasted sourdough) made it so much better. I was also in for a nice surprise with the golden browned fries, next time maybe I'll attempt to get the cheese fries. As a former Chicagoian, I'm pretty picky when it comes to hot dogs so I was pleasantly surprised when I tried Dat Dog. To start with, you have a selection of sausages that you can choose from (pork, beef, alligator, crawfish etc.) as well as a variety non-typical condiments (I had a hot dog with avocado). While I couldn't get a Vienna Beef, Chicago-style hot dog like I get at Portillo's in Chicago, I was really happy with the hot dogs I did have. The one thing that I noticed is the buns that Dat Dog uses. Usually I get a hot dog in a poppy seed bun that denigrates after a couple of bites. But not Dat Dog's buns! They use some gourmet, high end bun that holds its structure but also tastes really good! Their fries too were excellent and freshly made; they weren't too oily or soggy. The hot dogs are pretty great. I like the traditional dog topped with chili of course, but on another visit, I really also enjoyed the traditional topped with siraccha sauce and diced tomatoes. That's been my favorite thus far. I also tried a smoked sausage with pico de gallo, but that combo was ok, but not as good as I had hoped. The white trash fries are excellent. They're basically fully loaded cheese fries and the toppings are what you'd tend to find on a order of loaded nachos. I could just get an order of the fries and be full. I accidentally found this place during Lent and have been waiting patiently to go back. Worth the wait!! I had the alligator sausage dog with creole mustard, ketchup and onions. I believe it was $7.95, and my beer was $7. Hadn't planned on a $15 lunch, but it was for sure a nice treat. I went during lunch time, and had to wait in a fairly long line, plus wait for food. Best hotdogs in NOLA, if not in the world!!! Everyone knows that Dat Dog is known for their unique and outstanding sausages. They offer alligator sausage, crawfish sausage, hot sausage, and many different foreign sausages. The fries and chili cheese fries are seriously addicting! Are they putting some special substance in their food??? JK! But anyways, my boyfriend and I shared the alligator sausage hot dog and a plate of fries the other night, and they were amazing! I've also had the hot sausage and crawfish sausage; both are to-die-for! You're allowed to have as many toppings as you want with no extra charge. (The hot dogs are $6). We topped our dog with onions, jalapenos, andouille sauce, relish, and ketchup. So delish! And the fries....OMG I could not stop eating those fries! They were sooooo goood! And I don't know why! Dat Dog is located literally two minutes from my school, so I fortunately am lucky enough to have it whenever I want, although, too much will mean extra lbs! read more

It's a restaurant that just does everything well. Great sausages on really good buns with seemingly endless topping options and perfectly executed sides. I enjoyed the crawfish sausage with andouille sauce, Celery and jalapeno, and the gator sausage with etouffee, Celery, and jalapeno. Fries and tots are both perfectly fried and make for amazing sides. The awesome thing is, there are nearly limitless options for sausage and topping options. read more
