Always excited to check out the local spots when I travel, and who doesn't like donuts?? I have been to Chicago many times, but never got around to trying this spot. Dat Donut is obscurely placed in a little plaza on the corner of the street, so it is easy to miss if you are not looking closely for it. When it comes to donut shops, I look for uniquely flavored ones. This place has your run of the mill flavors, and was not much to right home about. I ordered half a dozen for us to try a variety of what was offered. Pretty average in my opinion, and I spent close to $9 for that plus a specialty donut (German chocolate) that could not be included in the half dozen. The only thing that seemed to stand out were their oversized donuts. So if you are looking for out of this world donuts, this is probably not your spot, but you will definitely get some decent ones if anything. I wouldn't say it would be much different if you went to your local Dunkin Donuts. read more

Drove 15 minutes to come try the big dat and it was worth it. We arrived at about 9 o clock and there were a lot of Big Dats left and plenty fresh donuts out. We stared at the other donuts for awhile before deciding to go with the just the Big Dat. Location: Decent area but not the best Atmosphere: small donut shop set up. Taste: Freshly made, soft and delicious Pricing: 3.55 for a giant glazed donut and the rest was standard donut shop pricing. They do serve smoothies and coffee products there also. This is a favorite doughnut shop. The donuts are made fresh and very close to homemade donuts. Their are variety of donuts to choose from, including a jumbo glazed donut. My favorite is the apple fritter, which is unique. The apple fritter is huge, with slices and bits of apple and the richness of cinnamon flavor. Very good donuts! The largest long john donuts I've ever had. Went on a Sunday late in the afternoon so many of the popular donuts were sold out. The strawberry glaze was delicious has real strawberry pieces in it. The lemon and coconut absolutely delicious. The two ladies behind the counter were so friendly and helpful. The smoothies were delicious as well. Would definitely go back much earlier to try that big donut and all the other flavor's especially caramel. Downside nothing to do with the donuts but outside in the parking two homeless women begging for money. They come to you right after you step out of your car. Don't let them stop you from getting these donuts. read more

If it's your first time coming here, go ahead and get the giant donut. You just have to do it. I had my doubts about it because usually giant foods don't cook well and lack flavor, but this exceeded my expectations. It was thick, but light and fluffy and the icing was evenly spread, making every bite as delicious as the last. And the regular sized donuts are just as good. We got a dozen donuts (for about $13) and a giant cinnamon roll. I recommend the roll, and of course, the classic glazed donuts. But their cake donuts and blueberry are also very good. This is more of a to-go type of place. There isn't that much seating and isn't very warm inside. We went on a snowy day. There is a lot of parking, though. Also, there is a $3 minimum to using your credit/debit card and you need an ID if you're using one. I can't wait to go back. Dat Donut has spun off and got a spot inside the donut shoppe called Dat Hoagie that sits in the back of the store. I decided to check 'em out. I got a large hoagie (who can resist a good hoagie) just for a try and a Steak Sandwich to see if it tasted anything like Taurus's (RIP on 85th Stony). Well I was pleasantly surprised! I bought the hoagie for my husband, but as you will see from the pic, I ate most of it. It was delicious! Tasted just like a hoagie from Taurus's. As for the steak, it was tasty too, I think I just needed to eat it while it was hot. However, great service and overall worth the visit. They have vegan options for hoagies as well and for non pork eaters, no pork. Check 'em out. read more

While at Uchicago this was my favorite donut shop in the area. I'm happy to say the quality has remained high. The yeast donuts are so fluffy and flavorful. The icing is also perfectly sweet and no matter what flavor you get, they all taste great. I finally tried their old fashioned cake donuts for the first time and was disappointed by their lack of flavor. They were much too hard and pretty plain. I also tried their apple fritter for the first time and thought it was okay. It wasn't the best apple fritter I've ever had (that would be at abundance bakery, a couple minutes from here) but it was better than most. It has a nice cinnamon flavored dough and crunch on the outside, but lacked apple flavoring or any actual apple pieces inside. I would suggest sticking to their yeast donuts, but get several because you'll easily eat half a dozen before reaching home. read more

So...if you're in Chicago, there are few institutions as sweet as Dat Donut. My cousin bought me the BIG donut a few years ago. Impressed by the sheer size alone...it fit in big and Tall shirt box! And I didn't really pay attention to taste. The visual was just overwhelming. But today, I had a simple, chocolate covered donut. AMAZING. Clearly, this place follows an old-school donut recipe. The chocolate complemented the dough well. Real chocolate. The donut itself was light but filling. Glazed and Fried to perfection. I only ate half of it, and I was satisfied. Take the Pepsi Challenge with that national chain if you want, but for a real donut, this is it. The national chain donuts are good, but the sugar melts so fast that you don't have time to savor the donut. I didn't check them out for any of their regular donuts, I came for the donut which is as big as your head. It's glazed and spectacular. I've eaten A LOT of donuts from A LOT of different places. Another reviewer had mentioned that the huge donut hasn't any flavor on the inside. Here's the thing. It's a perfectly prepared donut and its glazed. It doesn't need any additional sugar or flavor because the insides are so soft and fluffy. (My two cents) I got there just as one was pulled out. It was fluffy, warm, sweet and I could tear away pieces like pulling apart cotton candy. I got one and shared it with a few folks. Good stuff. Purchased a couple more for friends and for a dinner party. There isn't any perfect way to transport these donuts and they put them in a paper bag like most other donut shops do. It's important to lay them flat if traveling by car. What I loved most about these donuts was that the glaze was just sweet enough and the texture of the donut maintained for a couple days. It didn't get hard quickly like some donuts or doughnuts tend to do. The donuts existed for about two days max. I got compliments for sharing and once someone gets their hands on one, it's hard to stop. The shop has some round the clock hours so it's possible to have them late night. I look forward to grabbing another hot sweet one, the next time I am somewhere nearby. The cost of the big donut is low, I think it was $3 or $3.50. I inquired whether they would stuff it with custard or creme, they do not. The donut shop looks like a shopping market from the outside because it's connected with a barbeque carry out. Our trip to Nashville allowed us to drive by some south-side neighborhoods I didn't normally pass through on a regular basis. After hubby showed me the route he was taking for the road trip, I suggested "Dat Donut" as a quick stop since we wanted to arrive at the Music City by 3am. "Dat Donut" is located near the corner of Cottage Grove and E. 83rd. St., which isn't too far from the Dan Ryan Expressway. Customer parking in a tiny plaza lot is available, but I would say exercise caution because there are many blind spots, especially when the vehicle that is approaching you can't necessarily see you exit. Once we've got ourselves situated, it was time to pick out some doughnuts. "Dat Donut" definitely isn't a fancy joint that serves hyper-embellished doughnuts, but they have the basics: Boston Creme, Jelly-filled, Strawberry-glazed, plain, and dat "Big-Ass" thang (enormously huge...almost a size of a steering wheel). Hubby and I skipped the "BA" doughnut since we didn't care much about it having a college degree. Instead we forwent the half-dozen: two (2) Boston Cremes, two (2) jelly-filled, and two (2) strawberry-glazed. They accept credit cards, but there's an ATM with $1 surcharge fee for your convenience. The texture consistency was similar to the formula at D*nki* D*nu*s, but the flavors were much richer. The jelly-filled ones were "turbo-charged" with strawberry jam. I felt kind of guilty of finishing this, but I've got two (2) more doughnuts to go and I wasn't going to back off. Their Boston Creme and strawberry-glazed doughnuts were alright. I should have prepared a cup of coffee or two ahead of time, but I was trying to curtail my liquid intake so that we didn't have to stop frequently for bathroom breaks throughout the trip. Just discovered Dat Donut and already obsessed (been here twice in 2 weeks)!! Donuts are delicious and very reasonably priced! I'm a sucker for donuts so I haven't explored the menu, but other customers usually order breakfast sandwiches and coffee. I'm not too familiar with the area so it was a bit tricky to find the first time. It shares an entrance and parking lot with a BBQ restaurant so I missed the Dat Donut signs. It's in the northwest corner AND has a parking lot! Every time I've visited, there has been plenty of parking available! I've tried a variety of their donuts and they're all REALLY good! Can't go wrong. But my favorites are the toasted coconut yeast donut (the way the crunchy toasted coconut compliments the sweet fluffy dough is amazing) and the glazed blueberry cake donut (unique flavor with the special blueberry dough)! They have a variety of donut flavors and even HUGE (8-12 inches?) donuts that I can't wait to try. Really love Dat Donut and plan on coming back often! read more

I expected very little from this donut shop. I thought they'd be on par with dunkin donuts or some other mediocre chain. But I was sorely mistaken! They're donuts are delicious without feeling super heavy and making you sick from all the sugar. They're fluffy with just the right amount of crunch around the edges. They're flavored donuts aren't quite as strong as I'd prefer but it's better than being overpowering. And "dat donut" (the behemoth) is dang good especially for its size. I'm not a fan of raised donuts but I'm making an exception in this case. You might have to make staff repeat flavors to you about 20 times because it's nearly impossible to hear through the glass. But after a couple eye rolls they'll happily give you as many donuts as your sweet tooth can handle. read more

Donuts are tasty but a little high priced. They have a special HUGH donuts that cost about $3.50. I think it is a cute and unique Idea. Great novelty. Dat Donuts is owned by the same person who owns the barbeque business attached called Uncle Johns. The owner Daryl Townsend, has signs in Donut shop to advertise specials in his barbeque store that are false advertisement, because he uses a bait and switch tactic, where the barbeque is higher than advertised in the donut shop. When brought to his attention he claims the sign is just old., But refuses to take it down because it drives business to his barbeque store. I personally take offense to false advertisement and tricking the public so I cannot give the store high marks. My suggestion, take the false advertisement sign down, let the DOnut Shop be the donut shop and the barbeque store be the barbeque store and remove all bait and switch tactics from your business practices. read more
