Simple yet satisfying donut. Basic premise is either glazed or cake. Then they have those with various frostings. They also offer some donuts bigger than your head. These included a large glazed or an apple fritter. I've had the apple fritter before and regret not getting it this time around. My only gripe is I also ordered a breakfast croissant sandwich. I wanted bacon but they didn't have any ready and it would be at least an hour before the bacon they got out of the freezer was defrosted. This was on a Sunday morning at around 10 am. That's prime time breakfast serving! I had to substitute ham and it was just 2 skinny pieces of ham that ended up being super oily from the grill. read more

They carry the largest Donut I have ever seen/eaten. It was bigger than my son! He attempted to bite it and couldn't quite get his mouth open wide enough. It's a small donut shop in the middle of the hood that I didn't realize was there until recently. I decided to go and really enjoyed my donut. We ordered a smoothie that was pretty tasty as well. If for nothing other than the novelty, I recommend you go to this place. Its super small, behind bulletproof glass on the corner. It's not the stereotypical donut shop by any means but what they lack in décor they make up for in size! I'd definitely go back. When my acupuncturist said I needed to cut down the sugar, I got the point. She was correct in assuming the reason i am more Tom Arnold than Tom Cruise is my love of all foods good (and some not so good for me). I wanted to go out in a blaze of glory so I made my way down to south Cottage Grove intending to consume the donut to end all donuts. Now I am not talking about the spare-tire sized donuts that were bigger than the actual spare tire on my ford Focus (although they do have them at Dat's). I mean a normal sized donut. I went with coffee black to balance out the sugar thing. I got a glazed (always go with the simple) and a chocolate frosted (traditional). Now I am not an easy donut-consumer. In fact, I am very difficult to please (I'm fat; I'm not easy.) but this thick, full-bodied donut made me wonder all the years I wasted at getting to run like an American on you-know-who. I am very glad that the distance would make daily visits prohibitive. Donuts were almost harder to give up than cigarettes and these would be impossible. The 8:00am set at Dat Donut is all construction workers and police officers. They arrive in droves, always a good sign at a bakery. The elephant in the room is the "Big Dat," a pastry that could work as a baby's hoola-hoop, and everyone was staring at it in the display case. Apparently, no one had the gumption, no one wanted to be that guy, the one who indulges in the doughy equivalent of The Big Gulp. Expressions of the people in line varied from tempted to disgusted and I was in the camp of the former, so yeah, I got it. Well holy shit, Dat Donut, where have you been all my life? Oh. Yeah. You've been on the South Side, which is over an hour by public transportation. Boo. We were on our way out of town (4TH OF JULY VAYCAY WOOHOO) and I had heard mysteriously good things about Dat Donut. I suspected they were just tall tales, but I had to try it for myself. We passed this place about 4 times before we realized it operated out of (what looks like) an abandoned building. When we realized that DAT BUILDING was DAT DONUT, we walked on in. It's a small interior with a modest selection of donuts. They had glazed old fashioneds (which are my favorites) so we got 2 of those, and one plain old fashioned. We also got 2 coffees, to go. Holy. Shit. These are the best donuts I have ever had. Hands down. The outside of the old fashioned was crispy, and the inside was light like air. The glaze added a sugary hardness to the exterior, and it all came together in a wonderful symphony of donut bliss. Amazing donuts. I probably won't be here too often because it's a haul from where we live, but this will become a regular stop for us when we're on our way out of town. read more

With the family opting to sleep in on Saturday and myself heading to a local gym by car as outdoor running in Chicago during winter is poorly advised the combination of transportation and empty roads even after an early morning workout finally led me to the last old school Chicago Donut institution on my "must visit" list - Dat Donut all the way down in Chatham. Arriving just after 7:00am to find the store largely empty save for a vagrant sleeping at the long bar hoping to avoid the cold and greeted by the lone clerk, protected by half-inch glass I was informed that 'fresh donuts would be ready in 5 minutes' and opting to wait it would be exactly four before I placed my order - a mere $8.75 for five selections that could have, and did, feed five people. Far from the refined, upscale Doughnuts offered downtown and tilted more to what you get at Abundance or Old Fashioned the Strawberry Yeasted choice would be my only selection that had been sitting in the case and on par with Dunkin both in taste and texture I moved on to better things with a pair of toothsome cake donuts, one chocolate and the other blueberry, before progressing to the items that have made Dat a destination - the hubcap sized Apple Fritter and BIG DAT - the former dense, crispy, and loaded with apples while the later is shockingly light, much like a Krispy Kreme, and equally sweet - an experience worth the drive and the calories, at least once. read more
