We stayed here based on a recommendation from a local confirmed that this place was newly renovated. The pictures online were great with spacious rooms. The room we got was tiny and too small for two tall adults. The bed was very comfortable (full bed not a king) as well as the pillows. The room was well decorated and clean. Nice furniture to hold a fridge & microwave. It was too small for us. The staff were very kind & helpful. Wonderful restaurant across the street for breakfast and dinner was a bonus, we loved it. The grounds are well manicured and walking distance to the beach & town. I booked our room 3 1/2 months in advance so would have hoped for a better room. I felt duped on the size. If you are okay with the size then this is a lovely place for you in a great location with wonderful staff. read more

Love Love Loved this motel! I was very impressed by this motel. My fiancé and I decided to plan a trip out to Montauk for Memorial Day weekend and we decided to go with Daunt's. As soon as we entered into the little lobby for check in, the owner's dog Koda greeted us when we checked in. The woman at the front desk checked us in around 2:30 which I was surprised since check in is usually 4:00. Our room was ready so we decided to go in and unpack. We got a standard room which was perfect for the two of us. The bed was super soft and comfy and I gotta say it was a great nights sleep. Those hotel comforters are soo cozy!! The room was a little small but not by much, it was a very nice room. The linens were clean, overall the whole room was clean and I loved the nautical decor. The bathroom was nice, 1 sink and a nice walk in shower that I really liked. We really enjoyed the courtyard area outside because it had Adirondack chairs surrounded by little fire pits that they lit up at night. We didn't go in the pool because it was only 60° but in the sun it was still nice. Anyone who's looking for a great motel in town here, go to Daunt's!! You won't be disappointed! Great little gem in a beach town! We stay at Marriotts in the cities we visit and appreciate the great service they provide. So we were pleasantly surprised that the customer service was Awesome! They put a bottle of wine in the room, gave us gift cards for a restaurant, and made the reservation for us to celebrate my wifes' birthday. True concierge service we are accustioned to receiving. The room was clean and the bed extremely comfortable! The linens and towels are the Parachute brand which are top of the line! We asked for an early check in since we flew in on the red eye and they accomadated us with a smile. If we ever make it back to Montauk we will stay @ Daunt's again. Absolutely the BEST!!! read more

I really like it here. The first time I stayed for 2 nights it was less than ideal because we lost power overnight during a Montauk winter, but they made it right by comping a night during my next stay. I stayed 2 nights again this weekend (1 night paid, 1 comped). It's not a resort or B&B so don't expect breakfast or spa services, but it is very centrally located to the beach and town. During the winter (which is the only time that I've stayed so far), there are cute heated igloos in the courtyard to do some reading and relaxing. I haven't experienced the pool yet. Not even sure where it is. But the beds are super comfortable and rooms come with a mini fridge and microwave. During this recent stay, if I wasn't at the beach, I was getting some much needed rest. It's truly a comfortable stay that's a stone's throw away from the beach. I have high expectations and I recommend if you're looking for something simple and serene. read more

My wife and I stayed at Daunts Albatross between May 30 - June 2, 2023. We had stayed here previously, several times, as had my wife's parents, but this was our first visit since the renovations. From the first call to book our stay (Claudine was amazing), to the morning we checked out, everything we experienced was exceptional. Our room (the two room suite) was clean, simply but nicely furnished and was a tremendous upgrade since our last stay (pre-renovations). Considerable thought clearly went into updating the property while still maintaining a casual and welcoming vibe that Montauk has long been known for. The carpeted floors have all been replaced with stone (a wise decision in a beach community) and the bathroom was nicely updated with an amazing shower. The beds were comfortable and the linens of nice quality. The sense of welcome and attention to detail from every staff member we came in contact with was outstanding. The housekeeper (Savina ?) was pleasant, accommodating and excellent at all that she did during our stay. There were staff visible throughout each day and all were pleasant and attentive. The pool area was spa like. It has also been upgraded with nice patio furniture, landscaping, an outdoor grill and oven and even an area for yoga. There were fire pits in the courtyard each night and unlike other guests that complained about noise, that was never a concern and the fires were extinguished at 10 pm nightly in deference to all guests. The property is dog friendly and each day we were greeted by Koda, the resident retriever. While not directly on the beach, Daunts is a one block walk to the sand and surf of Montauk. Daunts has taken over Bird on the Roof restaurant and also upgraded that property (physically and with a new menu). We visited for happy hour, breakfast and late evening drinks / small plates and each visit was better than the last. The offerings are varied, the food quality excellent and the presentation really nicely done. As with Daunts, the staff at "The Bird" are pleasant, attentive and welcoming. Shout out to Sophia, Brianna and our favorite... Malcolm, for making us feel like we were family while visiting. Thanks to Leo, Zoey and the entire staff at Daunts and The Bird. You are clearly continuing the tradition of a comfortable and welcoming getaway location that your parents and grandparents started many years ago. Great stay. Headed to Montauk for a little off season vacation and decided to stay in town. Daunt's room rate simply couldn't be beat, and its proximity to everything made it feel like a steal. Don't do it. Don't stay here or anywhere in Montauk. The price is not worth it. You can go visit the world for the price you are about to pay if your looking to come here in the summer. Looking for something comparable, go google vacations with comparable pricing. My grand total is $1,444.60 for two nights ! This is asinine, I'm losing sleep over it. Want nature go to Niagara Falls, the drive is the same considering Hampton's Traffic. Treman State Park has beautiful sights. Buttermilk Falls... Novia Scotia ... Puerto Rico, Caribbean Islands these places are appropriately priced and well worth every penny with hotel accommodations. Here at this place you are paying for nothing this is a MOTEL. I love you Montauk however you've gone too far, and we need to realize there's other amazing places that we can sit enjoy and relax for more than TWO NIGHTS. ..... go on "X" out of the page and move on to bigger and better vacations. read more

Renovated room was super clean and the bed was very comfortable. The room smelled amazing after housekeeping did their bit. I chose the motel because it is close to town and beach and is also dog friendly. Great shower. There is a hair dryer, mini fridge and microwave. TV has full cable and HBO. Front desk is very nice and helpful. I would remove the dried leaves from the vase but this not enough to deduct a star. What's not to like? read more

For the location and vibe, you really can't beat it! It's literally a 3 minute walk to the beach, and if you don't feel like making the trek, there's a nice pool with some kushy comfortable outdoor furniture to lounge on. The rooms aren't particularly the nicest or biggest, but again, it's not that much of a bother to me. One thing I'll mention is that the hair dryer had old hair all over it, which was pretty gross. I just didn't use it. The bed was nice and comfortable, nicely cleaned sheets. Ceiling fan and AC! It was a comfortable situation. Plenty of towels for all your beach and pool needs. This review is based purely on the customer service - I'd probably give zero stars if it were possible. I had a family emergency and called the motel a week in advance, explaining my situation and asking politely for a refund of my $250 deposit. This was in peak season, and they easily could have replaced my reservation, as they were fully booked. I was told the manager would call me back, and that worst case, I could get credit for a future stay if my deposit couldn't be refunded. The following three days consisted of me calling several times, the manager never being available and ultimately, me losing my deposit. It sucks when businesses screw the customer over, especially when that customer is trying to be as accommodating as possible. I was very disappointed in how this played out. The Albatross has successfully lost a potential customer in me. I will strongly recommend other options to my friends and relatives who venture out east. read more

For years my best friend had been telling me all about his childhood memories of summer vacations with his family in Montauk and for years we swore that we would go on our own...but for years we couldn't get our acts together, until last fall. A group of six friends made the trip from Philadelphia and Manhattan for one of the best weekend trips we've ever taken together, the Hamptons Marathon weekend to cheer on one of our best friends in her first long-distance race. The Albatross runs a great special in the off-season that for the price of $150/pp covers your stay at the motel and includes 2 breakfast and 2 dinner vouchers. The meal vouchers are good for a meal off of the participating restaurants prix fixe menus or as a monetary amount toward their full menu. We visited just two weeks out of the peak season so the temperatures during the day were still delightful, though chilly at night. The cooler temperatures were welcome though as the rooms are a little dated and a little musty smelling so having an open window to air it out was nice. The hotel is only one block from the beach and smack dab in the middle of the main Montauk drag. The only time we got in the car over the course of the weekend was to visit the lighthouse and to get to the marathon site, other than that you're within walking distance to all restaurants included in the package. The staff was incredibly helpful in making suggestions on restaurants and in giving us directions around the area. If you're staying in Montauk definitely give this place a shot, most other motels are overpriced for what you get...unless of course you stay at Gurney's Inn, but I can't really afford that, so I'm sticking with the Albatross. read more

I'm writing this review right now from inside one of Daunt's grimy haunts. This mattress is less tempur-pedic and more human-size dish-washing sponge in a ziploc. It's around 2 am. The only way to lock your motel door at Daunt's is to twist the greasy knob lock on the inside of the room and then slam it shut from the outside. Drunken twenty-somethings, unsure whether to continue the prowl outside in hope of a sloppy parking lot hookup or pass out in their rooms to Three's Company (our neighbors' show of choice), intermittently slam their doors all night as they change their minds. This wouldn't be so bad if the walls had more integrity than grocery bags. Or if our room did not smell like a foot. Or if the carpet wasn't suspiciously moist. Or if I couldn't tell that everything appeared to be in medias rot. The last minute air freshener campaign that the staff hastily applied before our arrival, however earnest, did not mask the musty, sordid past of the room. The occupants before us did leave lots of their tequila-scented clothes in a drawer, which was thoughtful of them. When booking a room at Daunt's Albatross (most likely because everything else is booked in the area), understand that there are some positives: yes, you will be in the center of town and steps from the beach. There is free wifi that works half of the time. The staff is very young, friendly, accommodating and chipper. They graciously let us keep our luggage there and gave us access to their employee bathroom after checkout. There is a complementary breakfast of bagels, watermelon and just barely stale cereal every morning. It's pretty cheap for montauk (we paid $190 a night during peak season). Just be sure to expect a motel room experience more akin to a Motel 6 than a charming little beach bungalow. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a long weekend back in October. The price was right--it was around $280 for four nights, I think. Not bad. The hotel itself wasn't anything spectacular. I've slept on nicer beds in my lifetime, and the room was pretty small and dated-looking. On the plus side, though, the staff was very friendly and patient with us and our hundred questions (we'd never been to Montauk before), and the location is superb. One short block to the beach, and right in the middle of "downtown." Overall, I'd stay here again if they were running another special. It's definitely not as nice as their website and brochures would lead you to believe, but I'm finding that's always the case with hotels there. read more

I've never felt the need to write a review more after staying at Daunt's. This place is truly underrated. Our rooms were great, we had comfortable beds, clean bathrooms, a kitchen, and we even had a balcony. The weather during our trip wasn't the greatest but they were so friendly in recommending places nearby and trying to help us navigate when we wanted to go bike riding. They were so sweet, accommodating, and patient. The true star of the motel was Koda though, when you meet her you'll know. If we ever find ourselves back here again we'd definitely come back. I really wanted to rate this place 5 stars due to its location, however we paid top prices for a sub par room, the rooms were beyond dated and the bathroom was smaller then a Cruise ship barroom and seemed to be unclean with a fly/bug infestation. Nice calm, quiet, clean hotel that won't break the bank. We paid $99/night on a weeknight but I think the rate went to $299 or something on the weekend. If I had paid that much I would have been mad as this is an old and sort of run down motel with a tiny bathroom. The plusses: quiet, clean, cheap, good location The minuses: old and with a tiny bathroom. Everything in this area is overpriced so I'm just happy we found a place that is clean for $99 instead of a dirty old rat trap which is what I'd sort of expect for $99 in an area that is way way way overpriced. The location is perfect. It's right in the middle of a bunch of places to grab a bite to eat, 10 minutes from the lighthouse/beach, and close to transportation (bus/train). The people who greeted us were very nice and helpful in answering any questions we had, as we are not from the area. The room was veryyy clean and cozy. I'm very particular about motels/hotels I stay at, and this place exceeded my expectations. I was a little skeptical since the price was so affordable, but it was a great stay. Super upsetting how horrible of an experience I had at this place. It's been 6 years strong that I've been taking the trip out to Montauk for my birthday festivities and figured since we constantly walk past this place we will give it a shot. HORRIBLE MISTAKE. First of all, the rooms are gross & super outdated. Couldn't even watch the television because the screen was so messed due to the bulb in turn back of the tv being out. Guess that's from it constantly being left on but due to the price we paid for the room you'd figure the tv would at least work (playoff islanders hockey couldn't even watch). That's just the tip of the iceberg. The guest next door had a tiny dog that wouldn't stop barking at all hours, day & night. Guess that explains the smell of the room due to them allowing pets. I have no issue with allowing pets but at least step up the clean up to the rooms if that's the case. Coincidentally that same guest had the audacity to yell at us and physically punch the window as we were walking by. I guess as a gesture of intimidation, claiming we were making too much noise. Sorry the place is so old & outdated that the wooden floor boards squeak when walking up the steps. We literally had to tip toe back & forth not to disturb this lady. That seems to be a common theme at this place because the clientele were deff more on the intimidating/sketchy side. And deff didn't help that the lock on our room wouldn't lock. Do yourself a favor & double check that the door locks if staying at this dump. When we reached out and tried to voice our concerns to the front office, we were ignored. But of course when it was time to check out they had no problem calling us up to remind us. Would never stay at this place again. I deff would rather sleep in my car. Do yourself a favor and stay at the Royal Atlantic or Montauk Blue. Wish giving zero stars was possible, 1 star is too good for this dump. read more

Disclaimer: I'm a girl on a budget visiting Montauk with 4 girlfriends looking for a good time not a 5 star resort. This place gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside, reminds me of my summers staying in south beach as a kid getting ear infections from swimming in the pool all day. This is definitely a no frills family run kind of place. The lobby/check-in area sells candy, girl scout cookies, VHS for rental (yes VHS), and board games. There are bbq's for everyone to use in the common area, a pool, and some of the rooms have a balcony. The rooms are big but the decor/ furniture is very outdated (Think floral quilted bed sheets, executive desk, porcelain vase with cheap fake flowers, and big boxy tv). They give you a remote when you check in...which I don't quite get why they don't just leave it in the room. I never knew they would be such a hot commodity. The staff is super friendly, the lobby is open late, and they are very accommodating. I would stay here every time I came to Montauk if I could! Wish they didn't have a two night minimum stay in the summer :( read more

We had a wonderful and relaxing stay at Daunt's Albatross Motel. Our favorite things: the very nice people, the cozy beach vacation style room, and the outdoor spaces with grills and bikes for guests to use, amazing location right next to a beautiful beach, great price. Some tips for your stay: check out the Dock restaurant and the Montauk Bake Shop, and spend time time exploring Camp Hero (closed-up buildings and other military structures from WWII to 1980s that are easily accessible by car and walking trails), the AC unit in the room has a fan setting for light sleepers (I see a review below that mentions noisy neighbors) read more

Know what you're getting into... Whats good? The location is very convenient, just 1 block from the beach, 1 block from the town center and across the street from some of the best pancakes I think I have ever had (see my review for "Bird On The Roof"). The staff is friendly and they offer movies (albeit on VHS), board games and a variety of cell phone chargers to borrow in case you forgot yours. Whats not? The rooms are quite small, a bit dated (styling gives the impression that it hasn't been renovated since the 80's) and use of carpets leads to a less than fresh scent. Bedding is less than luxurious, but then again it isn't the Four Seasons. Thin walls. I can only speak from my experience so take it for what it's worth. We traveled in the off season to participate in the Montauk Mighty Man Half Iron Triathlon (fantastic race if you are looking for one). The check in was efficient and the lady who helped us was very pleasant; they even let us check into the room a little early which was greatly appreciated. The room itself was basic but appropriately kept, the only 2 complaints I really had were that the bathroom was really small and the rooms had enough of a musk that it "encouraged" us to keep the windows open as much as possible. The guests we encountered at the motel included an older couple, other triathletes and a group of younger people (in their late teens, early 20's) smoking pot but not bothering anyone. We also noticed that the walls were very thin, but the other guests seemed respectful enough to keep the noise down in the evening. In closing... The price you pay is a premium for the location, but casually observing the other motels nearby it seems to be the status quo. If you go in understanding that this is an OLD motel, I think it will help to put the accommodations into perspective. I might try another motel next time around just to get to know the area better. read more
