We've heard a lot of great things about Dave's Hot Chicken and finally got the chance to try it on Valentine's Day! People compare it a lot to Cane's and they have some friendly rivalry, so we wanted to partake in the comparison! The gentleman at the register was extremely friendly and knowledgeable when helping us decide what to order! There aren't a ton of options, but the options available are streamlined and give a good variety of spice level and flavor. The restaurant itself was very clean and well kept. There were open tables and our food was ready quickly. Sadly, this is where my review becomes not as enjoyable. I ordered the hot honey chicken and, while the flavor was interesting, it was extremely greasy and lacked any depth within the flavor. Everyone else at my table ordered the sliders and had the same type of experience. It truly left me wondering what the hype about this place was and how it became popular because it just felt like a very standard chicken sandwich/chicken tenders. I don't plan on going back, but perhaps it was the location versus the actual restaurant? It's definitely worth a try because I have heard good things about it. read more

I'm truly conflicted on how to rate this specific Dave's Hot Chicken establishment. I live in San Diego and I'm currently in Redding visiting family so I haven't been to the Redding Dave's Hot. However I go to Dave's Hot Chicken on a consistent basis down in San Diego so I know what to expect when I go there. The big gripe I have with this place is the wait time. I know that Dave's is all the rage right now because it just opened, but the wait time for the food is way too long. We waited about 40 minutes for our food AFTER we ordered. And the menu is very simple. They only sell chicken tenders. Sure you can put a bun on it and call it a slider. But all they're doing is cooking chicken tenders, with the only variable being how spicy the rub they toss the chicken in is. And they had at least 8 if not more people in the kitchen cooking. Again, I know they just opened. But when there's that much help back there and all they're doing is tossing and cooking chicken tenders, it should never take 40 minutes to get your food. And, in my opinion, there's no chicken tender that's worth a 40 minute wait. HOWEVER, the quality of the food was spot on and tasted great. So that saved this review to level it to a 3 star. WHAT I ORDERED: - Dave's #2, mild, add cheese, slaw on side - side of mac n cheese WHAT I LOVED - exactly what I ordered -the Mac n cheese is a pretty standard Mac n cheese. Reminds me of the Home Town Buffet mac. IYKYK I think mild is the perfect spiciness. Sometimes the medium is way too hot and unenjoyable so I always caution to the mild spiciness. ** PRO TIP** - say "yes" to the side of honey and drizzle the honey over the chicken tender. It takes it to the next level Overall, Dave's is one of my favorite chicken spots. But this place will struggle if they don't fix their wait time. Came in because I love the food. Almost left because I was somehow invisible to the young lady at the front counter. No welcome, no can I help you? ...nothing. I used the kiosk to order after seeing she had no intention of acknowledging that I was a customer. It was after the lunch rush, around 2:30 in the afternoon. The food came out and I had to ask for Dave sauce, honey, and napkins. I mean, the girl rolled her eyes when I asked for the items she should have offered. The store itself is fairly spacious and well decorated. But the food.... My wife an I ordered the same meal, chicken tender and sandwich. Our only difference was hers had medium heat and I had hot. After waiting 25 minutes for our order our meals arrived. Both looked good and had a good amount of French fries. Again one was medium and one order was hot spiced. My meal was the hot spic and was full of flavor , very tasty and made my eyes water. On the other hand, my wife's chick was fairly bland compared to my meal. I thought it might be I had the hot and cannot taste anything else. Well we took the left over medium spiced home for a test. Walked in 7:53 with nobody in line and only one couple waiting for food, place my order, nothing huge just a #3 with Mac instead and a fry on the side. I'm a very patient person when it comes to fast food and especially the overworked underpaid workers running the place, and so I waited until 20 minutes later at 8:13 to see what was up since the order was taking a while, the worker didn't even bother to take out his AirPods to tell me that it was gonna be a few more minutes before my food was out after a quick scan of the kitchen, about ten minutes later a family of 5 gets their food despite them ordering a good 10-15 minutes after me. This now being a good half hour after my relatively small order I get up yet again to see my food sitting in the window of the kitchen, I just make sure my order is still coming out and they let me know that they needed a new fry for my order, okay cool as long as it's good it'll be worth the wait. I'll just say up front the food was NOT good, far from it. It seems like the only seasoning they have is paprika, coming from a guy who likes paprika this food was genuinely borderline if not inedible, no salt, no citrus-y tang, nothing. And this goes for the chicken as well as the fries which were devoid of salt, and for the record far from fresh despite the claim that they were getting new ones. The mac wasn't bad at all, but it gave off "out of a bag into a warmer" energy which I guess I can't really blame them for. This isn't even to touch on the presentation, which, like really?? I went to Dave's Hot Chicken today for lunch craving hot chicken. Similar style to Raising Cane's, I got Dave's #1 which was two mild tenders and side of fries. First, it took about 10 minutes at least after ordering to get my food for takeout. Of course, the restaurant was almost full and a bit of a line, so I am not complaining as much as a result Second, the price seems to bit a much for the amount I got. I mean, $14 for two tenders the size of two small drumsticks, it wasn't worth the wait it seems. Third, the food itself wasn't great. The two mild tenders weren't spicy even to black pepper level. There wasn't any flavor and it was lacking compared to the many other hot chicken places I've been to. The fries were also two strong with either too much smoke or cumin flavor so there wasn't enough balance. I would give the benefit of the doubt for whoever made it, but it was definitely refund worthy. Without a doubt the best chicken sandwich place there is. I've been to a handful of the big name spots and none have compared to Dave's in my opinion. My only complaint is that they reformulated the reaper and now it's TOO hot. I haven't tried any of the low spice levels, but the chicken in general is never overcooked, incredibly juicy and has the perfect crispiness. Well I really wanted to like this spot and even went out of the way to try and eat there the first day google said they were open. After driving in the rain we were happy to see it was open and it wasn't crowded. When we got to the door it was locked and there were some folks inside.We wound up getting turned away and it was only 7:00 pm and they said it was a soft opening. No problem, We came back today and it was busy but not so much that I would walk.. Here is the best I can say. Prepare for extra time to get in and out of the lot, especially out. Chicken is heavily brined for maximum moisture retention inside and still crispy on the outside. The heat factor is controlled by choice and seems as stated on menu. I tired medium and my grandson had bites with no spice. The sides were just ok , My fries were just good and my grandsons Mac and Cheese was just Ok to me but he didn't like the flavor "some smokiness "and didn't like the Chicken bites .. they seemed over brined and maybe that's because he doesn't like the heat so without the heat it just is what it is. I thought the place was way loud as soon as I walked in..I could barely hear the cashier over the noise. My grandson said it was way loud also. So here's what I walked away with...
