Tonight's 2 hour and 40 minute dinner (from arrival to departure) was tough to swallow. (The service, not the food). They were comped their drinks for some reason, while we received nothing but a lame apology (only after I flagged down our waitress to inquire about our food). Excellent service! The place was bustling & we waited well over 45 minutes only to sit outside, just it it was getting too cold for shorts. We ordered the baked mussels and were disappointed by the chopped & spicy effect. We barely tasted the mussels! We also ordered a chef's "special", their choice roll. Also a disappointment. We had this lengthy conversation about not enjoying spicy sushi since it takes away from the taste of the fish, but that is exactly what we received! If you think you can't find great sushi 800 miles from the ocean you have to try Dave's Sushi because it will change your mind and your life! They have a wide variety of rolls and sashimi (some weird but still delicious like the fried chicken roll). They also have a good alcohol selection and exceptional customer service. Took my Japanese coworkers that were visiting Montana for a week to this restaurant, and I think I'd heard the word "oishii" mentioned a couple of times. They were crowded and they were busy, but they ordered a chef's special sushi dish and were impressed. They said it was excellent, and even had actual Japanese ginger (the fact that they could tell ginger was Japanese just helps me believe they know their sushi). Went with the caterpillar roll and the standard issue caterpillar roll, and both were very good. Overall casual and somewhat unusual atmosphere for a sushi restaurant (the building is designed to kind of look like a shack), but you're eating sushi in an American mountain town so hey, it works. This is my new most favorite restaurant in Bozeman! It looks like a home from the outside. There isn't much in the way of parking, so carpool or bike your way. And, it was packed! It was amazing how many people were served so efficiently with food that was prepared so deliciously! They are amazing! I truly believe this is due to the owner providing great training, plenty of staff and a great work environment. The restaurant team seemed to be just that, a highly motivated, supportive and experienced team! We're long-time customers of Dave's and did our usual monthly Covid take-out on Sat., Nov. 21. It was cold and crowded outside while we all waited for our orders or for one of the few seats inside (Covid thing). My order was ready when the Chow Now text said it would be. So far, so good. I inspected the package as best I could under pressure in the dark, and hustled home across town. Food itself was great as usual but...Dave's forgot to include wasabi paste and, worst of all, left out the pickled ginger. Not good. Sushi is all about attention to detail. A little more of that is needed. We'll be back on schedule, but next time I'm bringing a flashlight. read more

By far one of the best places in Bozeman. The sushi is fresh, the menu is vast, and plenty of sake and beer to choose from that complements your meal. There's always a compelling daily special roll. The miso soup is delicious and satisfying. If you enjoy sushi this is a place to try at least once. Keep in mind you may have to wait for a table during the regular dinner hour any day of the week, so be sure to take that into consideration before you head out for dinner. I also loved the selection of items and while certainly not true "Japanese" style sushi in the cooked area of the menu it was very much what we were looking for. Friends have raves about Dave's so I had an opportunity to give them another try. I'd been there 1 time before moving to Bozeman over 4 years ago and wasn't impressed enough to return. This time I definitely enjoyed the experience, found their sushi of good quality and items on the menu that were not there before. It still is heavy on the "round eye" rolls rather than more authentic Japanese sushi bar, but this is Montana. Had a wonderful meal and time. We had a 17 top, all girls, separate checks. So ya, we were high maintenance. Server handled it with stone cold grace. We recently moved from Kauai to Big Sky and we were craving sushi....of course...but where could we find decent sushi in Montana? Well, we have the answer! Bozeman at Dave's Sushi!!!! Honestly, it was better than what we had on island and we were blown away. So fresh and super yummy rolls!!! Also the best Miso Soup we've had in a long time. The staff was awesome and friendly. It's such a great little spot. Really comfortable and a Happy place!! Cool, party vibe. Pretty good sushi. I like to go here with my younger friends and do it up right. Get a ton of different rolls and drink too much. This is not the place to go for authentic sushi though, but I feel like you should know that when you read the name of the restaurant. Tempura is bad. But everything else is good.
