Never again. I dropped my coat off on a Wednesday and was told it would be dropped off at my condo building by Monday at the latest; I thought this was perfect because I would have it back before I went out of town. When it didn't arrive, I gave it an extra day or two and then called to check the status. I was told that it had never been sent out for delivery and would be delivered the next day. Another WEEK later, after I had already gone on vacation without it...there was still no sign of my coat so I went to pick it up and nobody even apologized for forgetting to deliver it. I bet if I had never gone to pick it up, nobody would have ever said anything about the delivery and I would still be waiting for it. It also came back in much worse shape than I dropped it off. My bridal salon recommended Davis Imperial Cleaners for proper cleaning and long-term restoration. I visited the store in early August 2014 and left my dress for cleaning. At the time they quoted me a three month timeline as cleaning is "done by hand." In January 2015 it dawned on me that I had yet to receive a phone call or update on the status of my dress. I phoned the store and they mentioned that they were unable to remove the stains and would need my consent to start the "wet" cleaning process. A.) Didn't we already discuss this process? B.) Why did I not receive a phone call from anyone at the store to tell me this? If I had not inquired, would they have ever called me? It is now April of 2015 and yet again, I am the one calling to hunt down my dress. After being put on hold they stated that they were able to remove the stains and would send photos for my review at which time I could set up a delivery date. Again, why didn't I receive a phone call and how long would my dress sit in their back room if I didn't hunt it down? There is no urgency to getting my dress back. However, it was insanely expensive to have it cleaned by Davis Imperial. With that expense should come some level of customer service and I should not be the one hunting down their employees to find out if my wedding dress, that they have had for 9 months, is ready. read more

While I appreciate the service philosophy of Davis Imperial Cleaners, when it comes to actually seeing the value of patronizing them for my "fine" clothes cleaning, I have difficulty justifying the exorbitant prices. I've had trousers come back shiny. Suits have been hard pressed. And even though the website says they measure and photograph every garment to ensure they return every garment to the customer the same size in which it was received, for some reason particularly my trousers come back a little stretched out (legs are longer, waist and seat seem a bit roomier). This has been a recurring issue for years. And at nearly $12 now just for a basic pants cleaning, I just scratch my head trying to figure out - am I the crazy person for paying this much to have my clothes cleaned, or is Davis Imperial Cleaners incredibly lucky for somehow getting away with this? $5+ for basic shirt laundry! For one shirt! I don't know what is happening to our society. Oh, and I'm getting tired of seeing them plaster their logo on every single little detail, from stickers to stamps to ribbons. I would better appreciate them investing in pressing machines that don't stretch my pants out, high tech solvent and cleaning chemicals / machines, and training, rather than seeing my money go towards the nicest drycleaners hangers (I end up receiving a lot of used / returned / recycled ones it seems anyways), bags and silly boxes. read more

Davis Imperial is great. They take excellent care of your clothes and they always come back perfect. They even stuff the sleeves of your shirt and jackets with tissue so they don't wrinkle! One time I sent a pair of white linen pants that I'd gotten stuck wearing the rain, and although they got WAY more dirt out than I expected, I still got a note back saying that they tried everything they could but regretted that they weren't able to get all of the dirt out. Now that's service! So many times at other dry cleaners I wondered if they actually even cleaned my clothes (or just pressed them) since they didn't look that much better than when I dropped them off. I left my high end winter coat to be cleaned and came back today to pick up to find that they made a mistake in taking it to their other location. Impeccable Service And Amazing Attention To Detail...and Draperies, Too! I've used Davis Imperial for my clothing for years. They've always done amazing work, from cleaning and tailoring to packaging and delivery (when requested). The staff is always attentive and professional, showing great care and expertise when processing my garments. Their tailors are exceptional skilled as well, having made "perfect fit" alterations to a few pairs of my slacks and sport coats. Davis Imperial is also known for linens and draperies. I just recently brought in sets of drapes from my kitchen. Being in the kitchen, these drapes have endured dust, smoke and grease over time and were definitely in need of some sprucing up. The four sets came back looking brand new. They were crisp, clean, pressed, and hangared separately. There was also a special note detailing the extra effort made in certain areas. I really appreciate knowing that an individual inspected all areas to be sure everything was cleaned to my satisfaction. I think Davis is probably one of the only cleaners in the country who can consistently handle clothes that are in any way embellished/beaded, have an unusual fabric, or a bright/white color. I have many items that I am positive would have been ruined had I taken them to the typical cleaners. bi had 6 shirts, 3 dress pants, 3 ties and after spending about 20 minutes enterering it into the computer, a bill came out and was about $225.00 USD are you completely out of your mind....how do they stay in business. I had to go to the car to get my glasses, maybe i was not seeing straight.....I told him to cxl the order and took my items to my regular dry clearners and paid 35.00 USD. I traveled from Portland, Oregon to Chicago for my wedding. My gown and hubby's suit were super wrinkly from the plane travel. I used Davis Imperial Cleaners to press both garments and was highly impressed with their customer service and quality of work. The shop is super clean, the staff are professional, and I really felt I could trust them with such a delicate job. My gown was silk charmeuse - very easily wrinkled - it arrived in pristine condition right on time, as promised. They delivered the garments to our hotel! I had a fantastic experience at Davis Cleaners with having my wedding dress altered. The attention to detail was outstanding. When I walked in for my first appointment, my dress didn't fit properly pretty much anywhere. The bodice was a disaster on me and the length of the skirt also needed to be altered. I had three separate appointments to address these things, which were all scheduled after my first appointment along with a "just in case" appointment a couple weeks before my wedding. I am extremely pleased with the results of my dress. It fits like a glove and is the perfect length! Also, I thought it was a fair price based on the amount of alterations needed for the intricate bead work on the bodice of my dress, and the tedious task of hemming my entire skirt all the way around, which is not typical for a wedding dress as most keep the train, and I did not want to keep mine. I honestly thought I would be spending more money on this than I was quoted. If I had to go back and do this process over again, I would definitely go back to Davis Cleaners. The staff there is also extremely friendly and accommodating. While the cost of the alterations might seem expensive, the quality of work is unmatched. read more

I'm not one to typically write reviews but the quality and service of Davis Imperial was so exceptional, I needed to share my experience. With the end of winter approaching, I decided to give my beloved Mon Cler winter coat the cleaning it so desperately needed. I purchased this coat almost 8 years ago and since then it's been the been through it all - countless snow storms, down pour rain, and 3 moves while stuffed in boxes. After more than a good run, It seemed like the end was near. With its fur hood, delicate gold buckle belt and faded black exterior, I didn't think my trusty coat could possibly last another Chicago winter. Leave it to Davis Imperial to do the impossible.. They managed to make my more than gently used coat look brand new. No really. It's as if I just purchased it from Neiman Marcus in 2016 - not 2008. Best of all they picked it up from my home, and returned it less than a week later looking sparkly new and ready for storage with stuffed sleeves, thick plastic wrap and even a white ribbon. Amazing! After doing a ton of research, my mom & I decided to take my one of a kind wedding gown to Davis. My mom hand made my silk gown with lace and crystals. After reading tons of horror stories online & understanding that silk gowns are the most difficult to preserve, I was incredibly nervous to let my gown go, especially since I live in Virginia & Davis is located in IL outside of Chicago. My mom, who lives in IN, took my gown in. The folks at Davis were very kind & respectful about the sentiment behind the gown. They are expensive & do take awhile, but it is not like I needed the gown back right away. We preferred Davis take their time. In the end, the cost & wait were well worth it! My dress is like brand new (I did have some stains on the bottom from taking pictures in DC). The packaging is just gorgeous. Thank you Davis for taking such great care of my gown!!! read more

Extremely over priced, arrogant, clothes come back dingy and in worse condition prior to cleaning. Not worth your time and save your $$

Embarrassingly poor attention to detail. On the Moncler store's recommendation, I brought my puffer here to be cleaned. Figuring they were good enough for Moncler to recommend for dry cleaning, I also trusted them to fix one very small issue on that coat's liner, as well as patch up some signs of wear on the liner of a pea coat. The dry cleaning job on the puffer was fine, but they sure botched the repairs. It took two tries for D-I to ultimately sew patches from the liner through the outer pockets of the pea coat, and do the same to one of the pockets on the (still not fixed) minor issue on the Moncler. I had to take a thread ripper to the pockets to open them! Two attempts to do the job right; they are not getting a third. read more

This is a hard establishment to judge mostly because of the inconsistency. On one hand, their cleaning work product is perfectly acceptable and I've never found any garments ruined or any damaged by their work. However, Davis is simply not a customer oriented business. In short, they seem to have appointed themselves the arbiter of how your clothing should be cleaned regardless of your wishes. Following the recommendation of a renowned city tailor I've been sending various suits, shirts, and sweaters to Davis for over a year. After realizing that the intake clerk was (for reasons that remain unclear) assigning higher service levels (with corresponding higher prices) to shirts that were significantly cheaper based purely on their brand-based pricing (yes; they price explicitly based on brand) I left multiple explicit instructions to the contrary (one permanent notation on my account and further reminders on every order form). The first time I caught this the clerk refused to adjust the price claiming that the higher service/price was justified since the shirt buttons had writing on them and thus couldn't be easily replaced if one broke. End result: $14 dry-cleaning fee for a $100 shirt. Lest you think this was an honest mistake, this incorrect billing occurred at least five more times. Granted, a few of those I was able to obtain the correct pricing per my instructions after lengthy phone conversations, but it became yet another chore to painstakingly verify every single garment pricing rather than depending on honesty and integrity in customer service. The straw that broke the camel's back came when, after the most recent repeat mistake, I called to correct the charge. Response received: "we don't necessarily follow the wishes of our clients but rather what, in our judgment, the garment and brand deserve." Furthermore, they informed me in the future I should always expect the same treatment, again despite explicit and unambiguous instructions to the contrary. The fact that they know how to take better care of clothing is beyond dispute. However, I refuse to patronize an establishment that repeatedly ignores explicit client instructions and takes a paternalistic attitude with disputes. My guess is Davis receives a lot of business from wedding dress alterations and cleanings--naturally a less price sensitive market with fewer questions asked. And truly, if you do not mind expending the time and mental energy to verify the final invoice of every single order then Davis does a perfectly adequate cleaning job--just don't try telling them what to do with your property. read more

BEWARE! As a vintage clothing collector, I was a 100% faithful customer, spending hundreds of dollars a month with Davis, and putting up with wrong and late deliveries, poor attention to detail, and a seeming disregard for customer requests and instructions, all because they are supposed to be the best in Chicago, until... Just this month, they irreparably damaged a vintage English tweed suit of mine, and instead of admitting their mistake, they tried to cover it up with a VERY bad reweaving job which destroyed the suit. When I saw the big hunk cut out of the jacket and hurriedly rewoven into the trousers, I asked them about it. In turn they became hostile and arrogant, refusing to admit fault or try to make it up to me, in spite of the fact that they know they're the ONLY ones who EVER touch my clothes, and that the reweave magically "appeared" when it came back from being cleaned by them. After this, I went to NYC, where I took the suit to Alice Zotta, regarded by most as the best reweaver in the USA. She looked at the reweave, said it was very recent, and definitely a rush job. Again, when I presented the mounting evidence to Davis, the owner became defensive and tried to play the "How long have we known each other?" guilt trip. Not even a hint of trying to make a "valued customer" feel better about what happened. So, I'm out an irreplaceable suit, a bunch of money, and the cost of getting the suit reproduced, all because "Chicago's best dry cleaner" can't admit they made a mistake and lied about it. I have worked in Luxury Men's Clothing for many years and would not consider trusting my garments to anyone else. Many of my suits are 15 or more years old, but look new because of the expert cleaning and finishing at Davis. I underwent bypass surgery in 2007. One day Rick Wood called to check in on my recovery process. My employer never during my recovery called or inquired about my condition, but my Dry Cleaner did. The pick up and delivery service is outstanding. George is so great. I provided him a key to my residence and he picks up and delivers without my being home. In addition he brings my miniature poodle a treat when he comes. I have had my light cream shearling coat for about 3 years now. The first year, while I was picking up a freshly roasted chicken in a grocery store, the container accidentally opened and the grease and drippings landed on my coat... Yuck!! I thought that the coat was ruined! I took it to my regular dry cleaners that are usually very good with my regular dry cleaning. Unfortunately, they could not guarantee that they would be able to clean the coat. Since they're using a third party for cleaning of leather, they would have to charge me regardless of the results... I was looking for more affirmative estimate what can or can't be done before spending money for cleaning. I went on line, found Davis Imperial Cleaners and took my coat there. Since Davis Imperial have cleaning on site, they were able to tell me what to expect as the result. When I came back to pick up the coat, I was truly amazed. It looked like brand new! After another two seasons of wear, the areas around the pockets and elbows looked pretty bad. This time, I didn't even bother to take the coat to my regular cleaners but went straight to Davis Imperial. Also this time, they did an outstanding job! So my review - 5 stars!!! read more

They go ABOVE and BEYOND for their clients. Just this morning I called about a designer dress shirt that I couldn't find... Within a half hr, Katara (sp?) had located my clothing and had it prepared for delivery to my home. It was my fault for not properly bagging/labeling the shirts when I prepared them for pick up, but not to worry - they kept my things safe. These guys did a really good job on a leather skirt. I rubbed up against some wet paint when I was walk to the bus and I got light brown paint on a black leather skirt. After realizing I had inadvertently spilled black liquid polish all over, not one but two of my suits, I was ready to mourn like they did in the old Testament: wear sackcloth and roll in ashes. After coming to my senses, I thought about letting Davis Imperial Cleaners have a go at it, I walk past this place often enough and they exude professionalism. I took my wedding dress here to be altered after reading all the reviews of how fantastic this place was. After doing a double take with the price, I decided to take the leap because, hey, it's my wedding..right? I'm so glad I decided to pay the money. They were fantastic! My dress is made of silk chiffon and tulle, not easy materials, and I'm comically short so the hem needed quite a bit of work. They were absolutely amazing. My hem is perfect and the dress fits like a glove! Plus, they boxed it up for me so that I could ship it to my hotel (I'm getting married out of state) and sent me a hand-written thank you note after the fact thanking me for my business.
