My wife and I attended a wedding at Davis Street at Hermann Park, and unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing. The wedding had the potential to be a beautiful event, but the restaurant's ownership and management fell far short of expectations. From what we observed, the event appeared disorganized from the beginning. The music wasn't working properly, staff members were standing around while guests waited, and the kitchen seemed unprepared despite having ample time to begin cooking after the ceremony, as planned. The biggest issue was the food service. Dinner was served much later than expected, and by the time our table received our meals, the salmon, steak, mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and asparagus were all cold. The gumbo was only lukewarm, and the restaurant even ran out of salad. For a venue that markets itself as a high-end restaurant and event space, this level of service was unacceptable. While our individual servers were polite and did their best, the owner, head chef, and female manager came across as unprofessional. Throughout the evening, I observed management repeatedly going back and forth with the wedding planners and coordinators, creating unnecessary tension instead of helping the event run smoothly. To make matters worse, after eating the meal, I became sick and vomited before I even left the restaurant, which was extremely concerning. I understand that ownership has recently changed, but based on my experience, there is significant room for improvement in leadership, organization, food quality, and event execution. It's unfortunate to see a couple's special day impacted by issues that could have been avoided with better planning and professionalism. I genuinely feel for the bride and groom, who deserved a much smoother and more memorable wedding experience. Because of what I experienced, I cannot recommend this venue and will not be returning. read more

Okay so Davis St has decided to host?/Offer a "Davis street after dark" It requires a reservation they say on the website. I did that 5 days prior to arrival. Once we get to Davis we are pleasantly greeted by Chef Holley who is the chef that cultivates the menu at Davis st. We arrive inside the restaurant and patrons are still finishing their dinner at all the tables. The hostess tells us they are not ready for the after dark portion but we are welcome to wait at the bar and they will seat is once they're ready. At some point a person that I can only assume was a waitress approaches us at the hostess table asking if we had a reservation which we did and proceeds to state that she couldn't find it... any rate the hostess comes back and takes us to the bar area. At this point the evening sours as we sit at the bar for 36 mins before some one ever approaches us... during this 36 min wait a couple arrives and some how are instantly greeted by the same confused waitress that alleged she couldn't find our reservation... Mind you we were the first ones to arrive for the event. When a clearly overwhelmed waitress finally approaches...it takes forever for her to come back after she would leave our table andd it took maybe 15 mins to actually get our drinks. And the drinks? horrible. I ordered a margarita and just tasted like margarita mix with no liquor for $17. My friends french 75 also garbage. Now how do you mess that up. Anyrate we end up closing our tabs and leaving immediately as that experience was low rent and not worth our time... Get it together Davis St, that was not an experience you should be prompting because it was sub par. read more

My family has been coming here over the past few years, but this recent visit was probably our last. First I would like to say that the service has always been hit or miss every time we've been here, ranging from friendly and attentive to never checking in on us. I also think every time I leave feeling like the meal was a bit overpriced. Prior to our last visit I would have given this place a 3 (for the inconsistent service). After this last experience it's definitely a 2. We've been here for brunch, dinner, and thanksgiving dinners. The food is good and rich but prices are steep (southern fine dining). I've liked their Thai shrimp appetizer, biscuits (during brunch), whole fried red snapper, and gumbo. Halibut and crab was good on my recent visit but very creamy and heavy. The vibes are a bit classier/upscale. People like to dress up when coming here. The bathroom situation is a shared area with a couple sinks, 2 men and 2 women stalls. So, what happened on our last visit: Service was just objectively terrible on the last visit. Basically, to try and keep this short, we waited 30 minutes for a drink that we didn't even know would show up or not. We asked THREE times for our server to come so that we could figure it out, and she never showed up. It was almost comical how we could see her and she just wouldn't come our way. Another server did come around 20 minutes into waiting to try and see what the issue was, but the bartender also showed up at the same time with a new drink option so my brother wanted to end the convo with the server. The server did not like his attitude so there was some back and forth (to be fair, my brother was being rude), before leaving w everyone frustrated. It also took way too long between the bartender showing the bottle and finally bringing the glass of sparkling wine to the table. No one apologized, no one tried to de-escalate, no one even ACKNOWLEDGED how difficult it was for us to order this one glass of sparkling wine, so it's unclear to me if they even realize how frustrated we were. Also our main server only checked in on us ONCE after ordering. It was while we were eating our food (and again, pretended like nothing happened). At this point we were just trying to enjoy the food. We didn't see her till the end when she offered dessert, but we asked for the check. Speaking of food, nothing showed up until 35 minutes after ordering. We didnt know everything (appetizers and mains) would all come at once, when we would have rather just get whatever is ready when it was ready or the apps first before the mains. Maybe this is bc we were sharing a lot of stuff, but our server never communicated or asked us our preference. In retrospect, I think they do default to serving everyone's food at once but it still didnt make sense not to serve some of the apps first. The workers refilling our waters were probably the only ones who were on top of their job, even though they weren't super helpful with flagging down our server. Anyways TLDR we had a very frustrating experience and no one really helped resolve our issue. The food is good and flavorful but can be a bit heavy. I love Davis str so decided to try their new Davis after dark function. We arrived at 10:40pm without a reservation and stood at the hostess stand for about 10 minutes until we flagged a waitress down who then got a hostess. Once the hostess arrived we were promptly seated. We ordered some of the specialty cocktails and they were horrible, we sent them back ordered margaritas that were just ok. The DJ started and the playlist was great! We decided to order quite a few items because we know Chef Holley and team never disappoint. The food arrived and was like warm and one item was cold the sticky ribs. The flavors were present and very tasty but I enjoy my food hot! The only item we did not like was the crab cake. While I like the idea of what they are trying to do, I will not be returning for this event. read more

Sunday I absolutely enjoyed my 5th visit this year to this fine establishment. The food was amazing as always. This is a great place to enjoy a meal guest from out of state. Had chargrilled and the fresh east coast oysters. Both were delicious. We ordered a second round. For drinks we had all Gunther roads am they hit good. We also got some fish tacos. Chef Mark Holley is a man that knows his craft. We were regulars at his namesake restaurant, Holley's up until closure. Located near Hermann Park, Davis Street is unassuming yet inviting. Street parking is available around the area. Now for the visit itself. Food / Drink - 5* We came here for Houston Restaurant Week on this particular visit and the dishes did not disappoint. The Seafood Tortilla Soup had a nice kick and good portions of seafood. The salad was light and refreshing with fresh strawberries. The Korean Beef Wraps were a surprise, but the table enjoyed them. For entrees, the French Toast and Southern Egg Benedict did not disappoint and the chicken and waffles were killer. Definitely recommend any of them with a lean to the chicken and waffles. The drinks were great, albeit classics. The Bloody Mary was delicious with celery, olives, lime, and bacon. Service - 2* Here's where the entire visit fell short. From the jump our waiter was just extra pushy on upsells to the point we were all annoyed. The Bloody Mary states it comes with Texas Vodka. I said something to the effect of, "I'm good with what's listed on the menu, nothing extra needed." I reiterated, if Tito's is the Texas Vodka, great, but made it clear I was fine with regular whatever "Texas Vodka" they were using. He upcharged me for Tito's. The same for the other patrons in our party. They all were content with regular wells, but he twisted their arms to a point they felt uncomfortable saying no. When two others ordered another French 75 and made it clear to him "bottom shelf" or wells was more than fine, he still charged them for Hendricks. Look, nobody is unwilling to pay for something they want or drank, but don't push it or overtly go out of your way to charge for something the patron clearly doesn't want. We were all charged an upsell for every single cocktail because of his shady a$$ practices. Furthermore, the waiter seemed annoyed when we didn't say yes, but yet, we were still charged for it. He seemed to be disappointed when we didn't ALL order desserts (we were quite full so we split). Further, we were constantly having to ask for more water. And to top if off, we asked him to split the bill at the beginning and he did not. Atthe end, he seemed very annoyed he had to split it up. At the end of the day, we drank the cocktails so we'll pay it, but it isn't what we asked for in most cases. As some who have read my reviews know, I came from this industry, worked in it for years in both front and back side of the house, it put me on the path I am and paid many a bills for me - the worst thing a waiter can do to boost their total bill is pushy upsells. It completely ruins the experience, it makes the patrons less likely to return, and ultimately, that is bad for everyone. Chef Holley has a fantastic restaurant, but we were all left with hesitancy to return if this is the type of practice that exists. Cost - 4* The pricing for the regular menu was in line to what one would expect, and of course HRW menu is fixed pricing, with a few extras for specific dishes. Subjectively, no complaints here. Notably, we were charged 20% gratuity for a table of five. Not the end of the world, but my experience is this is usually reserved for 6 and up. It was particularly frustrating given the experience we had with the waiter. If I could have, I would have deducted solely for his behavior, which is on him exclusively. Overall - 3* Davis Street is another creation that delivers on flavor, Chef Holley and his team know what they're doing and it's evident in the sustained success he's had. That said, our experience fell short on service and left a damper on it, particularly since it was a birthday celebration as well. I would like to think this is an exception to the norm and maybe our waiter is just in it for himself rather than the business, but that ultimately hurts the business owner. Would I race back, probably not because of the experience but we would come back and explicitly seek another server. read more

Visited here for a birthday HH. Our server Jen was very sweet, attentive and HILARIOUS. She provided great recommendations and gave us ease when there was mishaps regarding our food timing. For drinks, I ordered the Jenn's Martini and while it was good, I was very disappointed with how long it took the bar to make our drinks. We waited about 30 minutes for our first round, with spike of our food coming out before our drinks. There was only one bartender, but the restaurant was fairly empty so we did not understand the delay. Jen stepped in and was able to assist with making sure we received our orders and our concerns heard. For the table, we nibbled on the Birria Grilled Cheese, Beef Sliders, Crispy Thai Shrimp (our fave!) and Charbroiled Oysters. All of the food was good, just wish the timing was more quick. read more

Upon entering, the staff was very welcoming. We were early for our reservation and while we were waiting, I noticed how each staff member was attentively paying attention to their assigned areas. They were making sure everything was in order and most of all making sure the tables were cleaned which made the ambiance even better. My wife love to prepare Cornish hens. I had it smoked and baked , but I never had it fried and I must say, it was very delectable. I have been here for brunch and dinner. The first experience was a 10/10. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for this past Friday. The hostess made a huge ordeal about my friend not responding to a text about the table. There were only two other tables of guests so I'm not sure what the issue was. Once we were sat the linen had multiple gnats on our table; too many to count. We were moved to a second table that was gnat free but the wine glass had another insect in it. To be honest we began to question if we should dine here. After reassurance from the staff that the kitchen was in fact clean we decided to stay. From the wonderful hospitality, lively playlist, and delicious food, I would highly recommend this restaurant for a premier dining experience. I ordered the shrimp from the appetizer portion of the menu and a side of caramelized vegetable. The shrimp was so delicious I almost placed another order. The shrimp were large and the flavor was divine. The caramelized vegetables were perfect to create my own meal. After much discussion with a friendly waitress, I decided to order dessert. Each dessert has a recommended wine which pairs perfectly with each dish. I typically do not eat bread pudding, but the presentation of this dish made me very curious to see how it taste. The apple crumbs paired with the ice cream and caramel drizzle was everything I didn't know I needed. The staff at this restaurant has an unmatched hospitality. This is actually my second time dining here and each time it's been an exceptional experience We started the night with appetizers crispy Thai bacon-wrapped shrimp and grilled oysters in a garlic scampi sauce it was amazing. The next course we had a 3lb whole fried red snapper the was cooked to perfection. Our entree was garnished with greens and rice. I almost for got the shrimp and fried oyster gumbo it was really good too. We followed that up with dessert a turtle mud pie and a slice of key lime cheesecake. My first spot on my Houston Restaurant Weeks tour (HRW) and this place did not disappoint. The food and my server were amazing! This would be a good date night or special occasion restaurant. They place some R&B (yes I had mini karaoke breakouts) but it wasn't too loud where you couldn't hear your conversations. It did take a few minutes to be acknowledged and seated when I walked in because there wasn't a hostess at the door. That was the only negative I can say about this place. Everything else about my dining experience was on point. I was greeted by my server and he went over menu options. They are currently participating in HRW where you get a 3 course dinner starting at $55 (there's some up charges on a few items). First, that Island Spice cocktail is strong! The smokiness of mezcal did over power the fruitiness of the drink just a tad but was a good drink still. I chose the gumbo for appetizer. I would have preferred a thicker roux but the flavor was good! For entree, my friend and I did the up charge for the Thai Snapper for Two. That fish was delicious! It came with rice and greens on the side. The skin was crispy and there was a lot of meat. It was more than enough for the two of us and was able to take a good amount home. To complete my meal, I had the coconut cake for dessert and it was yummy! It was also a good portion so I took some home. Throughout our meal we were checked on by our server frequently. For the first course, I selected Honey Yogurt Granola Parfait. The taste was a bit of a mixture between some bitterness/tanginess from possibly the blood orange or mint plus sweetness from the honey. They were generous with the amount of berries, so overall . For the second course, I selected Airline Chicken and Waffle. One of the best chicken and waffle I've had! The serving is large, and I enjoyed the pairing between slightly spicy collared greens, crispy and tender chicken, sweet potato waffles, and two quail eggs. Hope you come with a large appetite! For the third and last course, I selected the Velvety Key Lime Cheesecake while my friend went with their famous Down South Coconut Cake, and we then shared the two. The key lime cheesecake was leaning on a bit too sour, and the coconut cake had a bit of a strong rum taste. I enjoyed tasting both, but not memorable enough to make me return. We were in town for 48 hrs for Beyoncé concert and wanted to do a cute dinner. We found this black owned gem on TikTok. Here are my thoughts: Location: Easy to get to. Quick 5-7 minute Uber. The service was top notch, not one dirty plate left on the table. Ambience/Crowd: it's a very professional crowd, great for a date night or girls night out. Food/drink : 6/10 We had the wine flights to drink, oysters - good but a bit salty, my friend had the Cornish hen - she said it was ok she didn't finish it. I had the lamb chops - they were ok. Had reservations at 9 PM, unfortunately, it was moving a little slower, but that's to be expected as it's a major holiday for couples, and this place is really cute! The ambience is definitely there, they played really great music all night, oldies, and new school, R&B, which was such a vibe. Loved the wine wall, and there appeared to be a fully stocked bar. After about a 20 minute wait we were seated and unfortunately they only offered two menus tonight. One of the menus was $165 per person and the other was $95 per person. The Texas Barada that was chosen was definitely not my favorite. I didn't get a picture, but, taste wise it just wasn't up to par for me. Then we got to choose two appetizers. I chose the crispy shrimp and the oysters with caviar. Both were pretty good, I would give them 7/10 for taste. And we chose the snapper to share, which was absolutely delicious. The skin was clear to perfection and flaky, crispy and extra tasty. Then we chose the chocolate trio for two. We were a little disappointed to see that some of the selections that others had were not the same selections that we received. Cons: the wait time was crazy. We came in at 9pm & didn't get our last dish until 11:15pm BUT I did speak with the manager who was extremely empathetic. He mentioned that tables were added for the event, lots of reservations, a lot of hustle & bustle but he was definitely understanding. I appreciated his transparency and because of that I'll be back. I'm interested to try their crab deviled eggs. Another thing I wasn't a fan of though, they stated that there was a strictly enforced, business casual dress code but upon arrival that wasn't the case. People came in whatever they wanted which was Jordan's and jeans Overall though, I'll be back. The food did take a bit longer to come out but I was part of a group of 6 so I understand that it may take a bit longer. Then came the dessert which we all shared so I was able to taste all three. -The best dessert hands down was the velvety key lime cheesecake. Was sweet and tart and it was fun seeing and tasting the different textures they used the ginger beet for as decor. -The coconut cake was okay. A little too dry and dense for me. And you can really taste the bourbon/alcohol flavor. -My least favorite would have to be the mud pie. The chipotle in the mousse was too strong - I could feel it in my throat. Every time I come here. I'm never disappointed. We made a stop to grab a bite before another engagement and they were really accommodating with seating is a hit before our reservation time. After Brew at the Zoo my boyfriend and I popped in for dinner. We have been meaning to try it out so we thought it was the perfect time! We came around 8:30 on a Friday evening and it wasn't too busy. We were able to be seated a tall table in the bar area. Our server, Benjamin, was so kind and very knowledgeable about the menu. We did the $50 per person Saturday menu! It was a TON of food and we took a lot home! It was all pretty good a little bland on some of the meats but the skirt steak stole the show and the sides were chefs kiss! We ended with 3 different deserts and all were very different. Our favorite was the coconut cake!!! We can't wait to return with our families! read more
