This is a great choice for a very quick, casual, and inexpensive meal in Athens. The Food: The sides were all really fantastic. We got the mac n cheese, squash casserole, baked beans, and collard greens. I almost could just get a plate of these sides and be happy! We tried the pulled pork sandwich and smoked chicken sandwich. I definitely could have eaten more meat, but because the sides were so good, it worked out fine. Out of the two meats, the smoked chicken was the winner. Another neat joint joint in small town Americana. YELP never disappoints when I am looking for a local place in an area with which I am not familiar. I searched YELP for bbq and thats how I found Dawg Gone. They have street parking at a cost right out front - there may be free parking but I didn't waste my time looking. It was 75 cents for 45 minutes I believe. You walk in and go up to a counter where you pick your meat(s) and sides and drink. Drinks are self serve. There are maybe 10-12 tables so its a small place. They have a TV in the dining area. I got the pork and a small piece of sausage. Pork was flavorful and very smoky - just right. Sausage was pretty good too. I got the hot sauce... liked that. So I'd seen Dawg Gone Good BBQ out of the corner of my eye last time I was in Athens, and decided to stop off for a quick lunch the next time I was in the area. Wow! What an amazing find! I know, I know, I can hear the locals asking "Where have you been, dude?!" And I'm like, I'm sorry, man. I don't get to Athens that much..." And I wish I did get to Athens more often, because this barbecue really rocks! I believe the owner was in the kitchen when I got there. He did come out to ask how I was doing, and indicated the pulled pork I was eating was his grandmother's own recipe. I'm not going to lie. It was delicious. I was offered a choice of hot or sweet barbecue sauce for my sandwich. I asked for a mix of the two, and the effect was really nice. I get the idea a lot of love and pride goes into this food. Indeed, that was some of the best slaw I've ever had. (It had raisins in it.) The price tag was also outstanding. I'm telling you, this place is a real Athens gem. I will happily return for more. Dawg Gone Good BBQ is my favorite BBQ place in Athens. Other UGA students had told me it was good, but it exceeded my expectations the first time I went there. The BBQ and baked beans are delicious. I do not normally like macaroni and cheese but theirs is good. Their ribs are also good, as are the sauces. I have been there many times this year even though a couple of other decent BBQ places are closer. The staff is nice and don't seem miserable at work like some employees downtown. When they ran out of something my friend wanted to order, the owner told her the next time she came there it would be free for her. Was a bit surprised to see this restaurant be the most highly rated bbq place in Athens. Overall the food was good and a great value but nothing worth returning to imo. I tried the sample platter, four of the side dishes, and the cornbread muffins. The sample platter comes with all the meats, a sausage link, two ribs, and a good portion of pulled pork and chicken plus two sides for only 15$. This was ama amazing deal as anywhere in atlanta, this much bbq would cost you probably $10 more at least. They do not skimp out on how much food they give you. The best meat was the pulled pork. It was seasoned well and had the perfect amount of fatiness. The worst thing is dry pulled pork and this was anything but dry. The sausage and ribs were both ok. The sausage had a tiny bit of a kick to it which gave it some flavor and I liked the charred outside but it wasn't something I'd get again. The rib was decent as well but it was a bit bland without any sauce on it and I feel like it's porbably the worst rib I've had at a bbq place (although I've never had bad ribs tbf). The chicken wasn't so good. It was way too peppery but at least it wasn't dry. The sides were overall much better than the meats. The spinach supreme and mac n cheese are both great. Again, mac and cheese can be a big miss if it's dry and gross but this mac and cheese was super cheesy and moist. The collard greens and baked beans were both fair. The collard greens had good seasoning but I wish they were a bit fattier. The baked beans were nice and sweat but nothing too out of the ordinary. I've had worse beans and greens though. Cornbread muffins were a bit dry but the pepper muffin had a nice spice to it. All their sauces are great. The mixed sweet + spicy and mustard sauces were my favorites. It's a good thing the sauces are so good because they help cover up some of the lacking meat. Overall none of the food was bad (the chicken was questionable but maybe it was an off day) and the prices were amazing but it's not a place I would return to. Stopped here for lunch after looking at reviews on Yelp. When I walked in I thought this is a hole in the wall joint (usually the best places for authentic bbq). You can tell it's a family run business as the kids are helping out during the summer (that's awesome). I had the combo meal which consists of 2 ribs with chicken or pork, 1 side, and a drink. I had tried the chicken vs the pork and ordered Mac and cheese with an additional side of collard greens. Let me just say the greens were delicious, perfectly seasoned with a nice kick to them. The ribs with the x-hot bbq sauce were nice. The chicken was a little mushy but had potential. The Mac and cheese was definitely homemade and delicious. I feel like the only thing missing from the meal was a dessert of some hot bubbling peach cobbler. I will be back the next time I'm in Athens. read more
