This very cute diner is the only Breakfast place in Penn Valley, owned by Steve and Sherrie. Open from 6:30am to 2:00pm, but note the kitchen closes at 1:50pm. I ordered the Daybreak Omelet and that comes with biscuits and gravy. I was very surprised at how fast my order came. Now let me tell you about biscuits and gravy--for my taste, it is not "real" biscuits and gravy if there is no sausage in the gravy. I am not talking about a cut up Pattie either; I am talking ground sausage goodness. The biscuits need to be fresh and warm like you are about put butter on it and watch it melt. Now that is the way it should be! And that is how the Daybreak makes'em. The omelet, made with 3 eggs, and a ton of fresh vegetables. For my omelet if it does not have tomatoes in it, you just can't call it an omelet. This was so good, and you can taste the smoked ham, and the cheese, OMG.... The cheese you have to use your teeth to get it off of your fork! This is a cute, local tradition for Penn Valley, complete with bring your own coffee cup and hang on the wall for the next time you come in. If you come in a few times, count on it they will remember your face and more than likely your name. I have been in here a few times and they have been over charging me by a lot. So I asked her why my bill does not add up with the menu pricing and she said they raised the pricing 20% on each item, without letting us know. That is a scam. That should not be legal, they should honor the price on the menu or change the menu pricing. Not going back there read more

Awkward breakfast dining! We had an older lady waitress was I think trying to be friendly but was not. Rolled here eyes when I asked if I could have the eggs on a side plate so my 8mth old child could eat them. Crazy to me..... $12.95 for French toast combo is steep which we could care less about but to pay that and get attitude. On the other side of the coin she would come by and talk to the baby and wait for an answer......he is 8months old lady lol. Let us eat in peace. The. It was ok. I was really hoping for a hearty, homey breakfast. The gravy is homemade not canned buuuut it was a country gravy with no sausage. Today was the 2nd time my husband & I visited Daybreak Cafe for breakfast. I was pretty underwhelmed after my 1st visit, so I wanted to give them another shot before I wrote my review. Unfortunately, the 2nd visit was a carbon copy of the 1st. When you walk in, you are invited to seat yourself. The menus are already on the table as are coffee cups. The decor is rather dated, but it gives you the feel of an old school mom & pop coffee shop. The menu features everything that one would expect at a diner. The owner (female) came over to the table & asked us if we were ready to order within 5 minutes of us sitting down. We weren't, so she said that she would give us a few more minutes. When she returned the 2nd time she asked again if we were ready. My husband asked if I knew what I was going to order & I told him to go ahead and order & I would figure it out before he finished placing his order. The owner said, "when you figure it out let me know". She was clearly irritated. Side note:I regularly ask my husband to order 1st because I may be able to snag something off of his plate that I want just a bite of. I always figure out what I want. I think the pressure makes me decisive. Lol. So, she left again. I finally settled on what I was going to get. Both the hubby & I ordered the French toast with eggs & bacon or sausage. We also added a side of hash browns. About 15 minutes later our food arrived. The French toast was really small & a bit soggy. I also noticed that there was no powdered sugar on the French toast. Our eggs were beyond overcooked. They were brown. There was clearly no training or quality control. We were never checked on to see if everything was ok. When we asked the server for our check, she obliged. It would have been better to just drive an extra 10 minutes up to GV. I really wanted to like it there, but it just didn't happen. read more

I've dined at Daybreak twice, once as take out and the other we dined in. If you really enjoy that down home greasy spoon/dive diner type place, (and seriously, some do) this is the one for you. What you won't get is the usual warm homey customer service you'd expect or the the low prices either. Most of the wait staff looks upset to be there as if you're wasting their time, and an omelette with toast and hash browns for $14 not including tip is just hard to swallow. My favorite breakfast is their Sunriser sandwich. Sometimes I'll call ahead to pick one up to-go if I'm heading out for a job and haven't had time to make breakfast at home. My husband Tommy and our neighbor Dave will sometimes start their days with an early breakfast here. They enjoy the food and friendly sarcastic banter with the staff. Also, wanted to mention that when my husband was ill and bedridden for an extended time, Sherri heard about it and surprised us by showing up at our door with a full breakfast for two. The Pancakes and eggs I ordered were good, but I had to eat them alone because my boyfriend got the wrong order, and Sherri took it back to re do it. He asked to keep the hashbrowns so he could have something to eat while he was waiting, so she brought another plate for him to eat them from. He put catsup on them, took a bite and sent those back as well, because they were undercooked. By the time they brought the correct order, I had finished my meal. When they brought his browns back, they were browner, but had catsup on them, obviously just thrown back on the griddle! After he took a bite! Absolutely no apology at all. No discount for the inconvenience. You'd think we were the ones being paid to eat there! And is it legal to put food back on the grill that had been partially eaten by customer? Hmmm. read more

My overpriced canned corned beef hash was a tiny patty, burned on the bottom, as my wife is as I type this review. Because I was starving, I ate it, thinking the plate of biscuits and gravy would be better. Boy, was I wrong. Freezer burnt biscuits and the gravy tasted more like the can it came out of than gravy. The service was a joke. Seriously, one waitress for a packed diner on a late Sunday morning? She was very kind and helpful, but she had 25 individual customers to take care of. The two women they had busing tables did not speak, just flopped plates down and went on to the next table. If you're going to carry a glass of apple juice in your dirty paws by holding the rim, you should at least offer a straw so my wife's lips don't have to touch the same place your filthy hands were. I had gone here a few times - as others say - it seemed only place to have breakfast. The last time, I realized the wife/owner had been adding incorrectly and had been overcharging me. She laughed and said she does that all the time! She did correct this time but not any of the times before even though she remembered them. We came to the area for a 2 week vacation. I always check out Yelp before going to a new place. I decided, after reading some of the reviews, not to visit this establishment but found they were the only restaurant open. It was Labor Day. I am from South Lake Tahoe, and never thought everything would be closed in an entire town. So we wound up going in. When we walked in the place was packed. We sat and several minutes later the waitress appeared, brought us water which we had not ordered, but were very appreciative of. She told us as soon as she delivered food she would be right back for our order. So far so good. True to her word she came back in about 5 minutes, perfect timing. When we received our food, it was steaming hot and Delicious. Happy and Full we left. When we did find an open gas station I realized I left my wallet at the Day break. I tried calling, no answer. We went back and saw they had closed. I was looking for their hours of operation on the locked front door so I could return and see if I would get my wallet back, and our waitress came to the door, opened it, and handed me my wallet. I was very happy, to say the least. When I left the restaurant after eating, I know I had 4 one hundred bills and some singles and several credit cards, when my wallet was returned everything was intact. After eating at Daybreak multiple times I was shocked to read the reviews on Yelp. I absolutely LOVE this cafe. Their lobster and egg benedict is one of my favorites but occassionally I will swap over for the Breakfast croissant. I have always walked in to a super warm welcome and the place has always been very clean. My husband and I frequent this cafe and have probably been 10 times in the last 2 months. Anytime we have visitors in from out of town we make sure to take them to Daybreak. I really think of it as a local gem. In fact, when we lived in Alta Sierra we would drive out to Penn Valley just to eat breakfast here. read more
