Good meal overall. According to the wait staff, the owners father is a local butcher so cuts of meat are good and fresh. Three servers for the whole restaurant meant service was spare and in traditional Dutch style, they won't bring you the bill unless you ask! As we found with many restaurants, you don't get much say in where you want to sit...they tell you based on how busy they are. I had a steak and my wife had the "tender beef". We wanted to try some authentic Dutch food so I looked up places on yelp and found this spot. It had 4 stars, so I thought why not give it a try. The restaurant has a nice and cozy ambience, but the service could be improved as the waitress who took our order had a bad attitude. My mom only drinks hot water (cold water is not her thing). When I asked for a cup of hot water for her, the waitress rudely responded with "we charge for water". Yeah ok....whatever. I can afford that cup of water and then some. The male waiter was much more friendly, I noticed that he said hello to every table he served before taking their orders. Even the lady that brought us our food was also friendly, she is probably the saving grace. Overall, the food was good, the stamppot and bitter balls were good. Stumbled on this place on our first day in Amsterdam while walking from the museums to Rokin, and so glad we did. We had such a great experience that we brought our friends the next night! Over our two meals we had fabulous service from Sergio, who was so friendly, very informative and gave guidance on what to order for our meals based on some dietary restrictions. Over the two meals, my wife and I had the cheese croquettes and side salad, the tomato soup with leeks, the vegetable pie, the vegetarian stamppot, and a veggie burger (new/temporary? item due to a mixup from their supplier-they were supposed to have gotten vegetarian schnitzel which would have been great to try). But I digress! All food was fresh, tasted wonderful and was plentiful. My favorite was the vegetable pie, a very unique and tasty dish. We also ordered beer and a trio of genevers (after having just come from the House of Bols Museum). Sergio was gracious enough to let us try the 4th genever on their menu as a comparison; and, at the end of our meals, brought us a glass of Hemel op Aarde (Heaven on Earth); which is now our new favorite dessert liqueur!! I realize this restaurant is in a touristy area; but for the value, tasty Dutch cuisine and great service, I highly recommend this place! read more

I am Dutch and can say that the food tastes exactly the way it should. The staff is all Dutch making this a real Dutch restaurant. However when I was there the wifi was down, the service mediocre (although friendly), the music a little strange and switched off all together at one point. When I asked if the tow of us could each pay for yourself by card, we we're told this is not possible. Also the tables and chairs are old. read more

First time here and really enjoyed it. We had to shift tables to make room for a larger group. No biggie and we got a free drink. The bitter balls were good first time having so no basis for comparison but loved the mustard. The ribs were super large portion and very tasty. Potato and sauerkraut was also very good. Favorite restaurant in all Amsterdam. Period. It's not a trip to the Dam without their traditional split pea, and of coarse, I'm all about the straight up up meat and potatoes. I recomend the stamppot... either the roast beef and mashed, with carrot and onion, or the meatball in mashed potatoes, with endive and bacon. Since the first time I came to the Dam, nothing has compared. You can't beat traditional perfection, and a taste of culture. Here, they got it spot on, with exceptional service and a smile. read more

This place was great. It gave me and my husband an good snapshot of traditional Dutch cooking with a slight modern twist. We loved the little deep fried balls. According to my husband, they tasked like thanksgiving. I agree. I had a delicious pea soup and my hubby got a meatball with mashed potatoes and endive. The meatball was perfectly seasoned, but the potatoes needed salt. Everything was good overall, but needed a bit of salt- I gather Dutch food uses less then us Americans. Dessert was my favorite. We ordered the tiny Dutch pancakes with melted butter, powered sugar and vanilla ice cream. It was life changing. The ice cream tasted so much better than anything we have here in the states. I totally recommend this place for anyone visiting Amsterdam who wants to a taste of traditional food. read more

I certainly had a good and unique meal here. The main dish is basically mashed potatoes with a slab of meat on top. Get the three course dish, comes with soup, that meat thing, and desert (usually pudding, which was great). The price isn't outlandish and you'll feel pretty fancy eating here. Likely should limit to 2-4 people, it's pretty tightly packed, so you'll be sitting next to strangers if you don't take up a whole table (kinda cool). read more

Do yourself a favor and get the stamppot here. On our last night in Amsterdam we randomly stumbled upon this place... It looked quirky and smelled good, so we decided to just give it a try without checking the reviews online. It was our first time having stamppot at all but it tasted delicious. I got the one with tender beef, which was AMAZING, and my boyfriend got the meatball one (he confirms that it was delicious as well). I got their seasonal beer to accompany my meal and it was pretty great too. We also enjoyed the apple pie. Also my boyfriend accidentally left his Tomorrowland hat there but when we called the next day to see if they still had it, they were very nice about it and said they were holding on to it until we went to grab it later on in the day. Despite having just spent five days in Amsterdam, I still know next to nothing about Dutch cuisine. But that's better than the nothing I basically knew before going to Amsterdam, and, for what little I do know now, I guess I can thank this place. I was drawn here by the very fact that it advertised itself as offering authentically Dutch food, which, believe it or not, can actually be hard to locate in Amsterdam. The special menu on the wall declared "Hotchpotch" to be something exceptionally Dutch so I went with that and... Well, meat and mashed potatoes can apparently make for a somewhat expensive Dutch dinner and not just a typical Thanksgiving. A good intro to Dutch cuisine Ambience: Pretty much a standard restaurant with seating inside and out. Service: Great staff. Very friendly and happy to offer suggestions or simply talk about anything. No rush no fuss. Food: Huge portions. Good quality but I think they should warn people that even if you're hungry you will most likely be leaving some at the end. The hotchpotch has very tender meat and great potatoes but way to much potatoes. After trying this for one meal I came back a few days later and simply went for an appetizer and desert which was enough. For this I chose the herring (which is probably an acquired taste and not for everyone but I thought it was great) and the poffiertjes (kinda like a mini pancake) and this was probably the best meal I had in over a week in Holland. Price: Good value. Overall I'd recommend this as a good place to get a sense of Dutch style food. read more

We set out for a typical Dutch meal to try it out at least once while in town. Through a couple of apps we found this restaurant. The menu was reasonable and the meals that we saw seemed simple yet appetizing. We were seated at the front of the restaurant amongst other tourists. The servers were sweet and polite... And very attentive. A couple of strange men had walked in and sat down behind my boyfriend. His coat hanging over the back of his chair, he chose to move his iPhone and wallet from his outside pocket to his inside pocket. After only 5 minutes the men stood up and made their way to the door and the waitress seemed bewildered by their behavior and asked them if they were leaving without wanting to eat. As soon as they walked out she asked my boyfriend if he had everything in his pockets and he checked and said No! she immediately ran after them to stop them. My boyfriend and some other English patrons as well! Luckily enough they were willing to give back the iPhone. The wallet they threw on the ground and we had to insist for the cash contents that they had been seen passing one another by the Englishmen who had obviously thought that that was a suspicious thing to do at a dinner table. After the drama and a little bit of a nervous laugh, we sat down to enjoy our authentic meal. The dinner was even more delicious after the waitress saved from a horrible tourist experience! This aside, the food was really good! I thoroughly recommend it not only for an authentic taste of Holland but for the great service as well! Thanks again to that waitress! De Blauwe Hollander is in the very busy restaurant and bar area of Leidseplein. One of two dutch restaurant that are across one another, it is a good option to taste dutch food (I do once every time I go to Amsterdam). I have been here before but the management changed this year and the experience was better than what I remembered. My husband and I visited Amsterdam for the first time last weekend. We decided to walk around after our museum visits, and find some Dutch food. This is not necessarily and easy task, as there are so many restaurants, more ethnic than Dutch! Upon arrival, we were greeted and seated very promptly. We discovered very quickly that we had arrived just before the big dinner rush. It was Sunday evening, February 16. Our server was Tessa, who was very friendly and helpful. We told her that we were wanting to try a true Dutch experience. She patiently answered all of our questions about the menu, and seemed delighted when she took our order. She even told us a little history about the restaurant, and what the restaurant name referenced. (I won't spoil it for you...go ask!) We started with a bottle of Sourcy and 2 beerenburghers. Tessa had told us she thought the beerenburgher was strong, but we didn't think so. We didn't thinks this was any fault of hers, as everyone tastes things differently. We thought it was kind of "brandy-like". She thanked us for providing feedback, so she can do her job better. Next we each had erwtensoep (pea soup). This was amazing! Most times I find soups to be very salty, and the night before we had erwtensoep at another establishment where we found it very salty. It was served in the traditional way with a slice of rye bread topped with bacon. I ordered the "Menu 19" which is a 19 Euro special, and my husband had the Kip sate. To complement our dinners, we ordered a bottle of Rondo, Dutch red wine. My meal was hutspot, potatoes mashed with kale, served with a kielbasa type sausage and gravy. The portion was large (I took 1/2 back to our studio to pan fry the following morning), and the sate (chicken) came with fries, a cabbage apple slaw and a piece of krupuk. We both enjoyed our meals tremendously! The wine was light and fruity. It pared will with our meals. We enjoyed a coffee (espresso) and a dessert as the Menu 19 included one of those. We wanted to try the dessert, which was really quite good. I cannot remember what it was called. In a bowl, one side had plain yogurt and the other had a custard. It was topped with a tart berry sauce whipped cream and a small sprig of red currants as garnish. Perfect, not too sweet ending to a great meal. We were completely impressed with the service, as the place got very busy, and all table were served by Tessa and one other gentleman. They never made us feel rushed at all, and didn't miss a beat. We really did enjoy Blauwe, the place is central, clean and neat. The service was very hospitable and English friendly. We had the split pea and mustard soup. Loved the pea, the mustard was not a do again. The cheese croquette salad very nice as was the meatball sandwich. Beer offerings were awesome. The only short giving is that Dutch food is a very heavy for Americans. Did I just say someone severs heavier food than us? I think if you were visiting in the wet cold of winter it would have been received better. That said, however, the greens on the salads were impeccable and included mache and a wonderful light dressing. read more

We wanted a Dutch meal, so we came here. I ordered the mussels and my boyfriend got their prefixed menu - pumpkin soup, hotchpotch, and yogurt type desert. The place just became extremely busy when we arrived, so the waitresses were not as attentive, but super nice. The food portiona were massive. Normally when you order mussels, you can still be hungry after, this was a huge portion. The only thing we didn't like about this restaurant is that you have to pay for water!!! What? Excellent food and exceptional service. But most of all so welcoming to our 13 month old baby. As parents we want to travel the world and it is exciting to find places that welcome us with our kiddo so we can try the local flavors. They gave him kids cards and really took care us. Got here early after an unsuccessful attempt the previous night. Reservations a must if you don't want to eat before 7. Had the three course special for €20.50. Included a choice of soup, choice of stamppot and dessert or coffee. I went with the pea soup, beef with carrot and onion stamppot and a post meal coffee. In search of an authentic Dutch dinner, we felt lucky to snag a table for two without a reservation tonight. With an appetizer called Bitter Balls, well, we had to try them! They were a little like a mushroom pate inside a hushpuppy. We considered them to be quite tasty. 4 stars for the porkchop dinner, and 1.5 stars for the leek soup. The hits were the lemon cheesecake and the little baby pancakes drizzled in butter. The downer was definitely the tortoise-like service, so just be aware that a simple dinner may take upwards of 3 hours. read more

Being of Dutch descent, my family trip had to include a bowl, or five, of Dutch Split Pea Soup. De Blauwe Hollander was one of the few restaurants that included it on their menu. It's located in a alleyway full of restaurants in the Leidseplein area. We started out with a bowl of Split Pea Soup each. And then had the main meals. They had a special meal deal for 19 euros each where you could have the split pea soup, a hotchpotch meal, and then a specific dessert. My sister had a hotchpotch with tender beef. That beef and the split pea soup had us all hit with a blast of nostalgia. They tasted so much like what our grandma used to make for us when we were little, especially for my dad. That alone made our night at the restaurant spectacular! My hotchpotch dish was a mashed potato with sauerkraut mixed in and a sausage. The last piece of sausage fell on the floor and my first reaction was to pick it up and eat it because I could not waste such a delicious thing! But my sister forced me not to eat it and that was a good thing because there was a piece of hair on it and tons of dust. The dessert was just a bowl of half yogurt/half custard with fruit coulis drizzled on top. You may not think it would be that great for a restaurant. I was a bit disappointed when I found that was the only option for the meal deal, but it turned out to be really refreshing and light after such a heavy meal. This restaurant was friendly and offered the perfect menu, and the food was so fantastic, we enthusiastically returned to the restaurant on our last night as well.
