    Black coffee to go!
    Kate M.

If I lived in Pittsburgh this would be my favorite coffee shop to frequent! This was located close to my hotel and they served me a delicious coffee to warm me up after the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. They also had some breakfast sandwiches but I opted for coffee only on this visit. We come to Pittsburgh once a year and I know this will be a stop for me now every May.

I've been to De Fer over a handful of times! The Downtown location is one of my favorites! Always great service and staff! Parking obviously sucks. There is decent amount of seating, which is always a plus in my book! I got the cookie butter latte "Christmas style" and it was so good! I'm not super crazy about their breakfast sandwiches, but they do have them! The star of the show for me was the vegan pumpkin chocolate chip muffin! One of the best muffins I've had in a while! (Don't be scared just because it says vegan!) I'm not vegan. But I can appreciate a good vegan dish/ item!

One of my favorite places on the Strip! The atmosphere is so nice here, with lots of indoor and outdoor seating and lovely decor! I especially love their seasonal drinks, especially their brown sugar cinnamon cold brew, the cold foam is so perfect and airy, one of the best I've had! All their baked goods are great too, but the Korean Pork hand pie is top tier, also their breakfast sandwiches on English muffins are popular for a real good reason. Definitely a great place to hang out and chat or get some work done, or enjoy a little sunshine with a great drink and snack!

ORDER Blueberry Vanilla Latte - delicious!! The blueberry tastes legit and the vanilla isn't too overpowering. I like how the coffee taste is still very noticeable and strong. Delicious!! VIBES The place gives a modern, bright cafe look with the white tiles and wooden shelves. There's a couple of tables for seating but most people grab and go. SERVICE I went here twice within my week stay in Pittsburgh and the service is absolutely phenomenal! The staff is so welcoming. Drinks are quick to come out and they're really sweet about giving recommendations!

Peach crumble matcha latte and turkey Brie sandwich

Cold foam didn't last a 5 minute walk and matcha was the worst I've had in the city. Sandwich was pretty good. Separately I'd rate the matcha a -2/5 and sandwich a 4/5.

This is a small De Fer location right in the Cultural District. I was there on a busy Saturday morning with the German Christmas market happening one block away. It was pretty packed and we were told there was a 15 minute wait but we definitely didn't wait that long. The staff is super friendly! I enjoyed my latte as usual!

This place is super adorable. They have awesome little gifts you can and merch. The drink and treat I ordered were delicious. And the staff were extremely nice and efficient.

Great lattes and muffins! I dropped by with a friend a few minutes after they opened on a weekday, and there was a short line. Staff was friendly, quick, and helpful. If you're looking for a place to sit and do work, beware that this establishment is small so there's limited seating.

I've had De Fer before, but at another location (Strip District) and it's a fav spot but was Downtown today and gave this location a try! I was impressed! The space was neat and bright, but also lots of stuff to look at including art from a local favorite... Baron Batch! Now... for the coffee. The special was a cinnamon foam cold brew with some walnut syrup and it was simply delightful! What a nice blend or fall flavors! They made it just how I liked, a little less sweet. It's nice to see a business like this in the Downtown area. It was a welcoming space inside and out!

This place came so highly rated that I walked 15 mins from my hotel to grab my morning coffee from here. The interior is cute and standard for a coffee shops in 2025. I ordered the piña colada cold brew and a chocolate chip cookie. Both were a complete disappointment! The cold brew not only did not taste like a piña colada, but also barely tasted like coffee... Just watered down and bitter. The chocolate chip cookie was dry and absolutely horrible tasting. I'm sure Pittsburgh has better options in this place!

De Fer Coffee & Tea is an absolute five-star gem nestled right in downtown Pittsburgh. If you are searching for a coffee shop that is genuinely unique and not corporately owned, look no further. The space itself is wonderfully quaint, bursting with character and charm, making it the perfect spot to sit and leisurely work on personal or business projects. The coffee is, without exaggeration, exceptional. Their latte is a must-try--it's silky, full-bodied, and truly scrumptious. Beyond the drinks, the food offerings are outstanding. For a savory start, I highly recommend their mushroom breakfast sandwich. Adding to the atmosphere, the shop is decorated with lots of cute and interesting merchandise, plus a delicious array of pastries to choose from. Best of all, the staff are amazing and super friendly, always willing to explain any of their offerings. De Fer is definitely a regular stop of mine and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a truly unique and friendly coffee experience in the city.

There were a few outdoor tables on a beautiful day, and free water available

Visited Pittsburgh this past weekend to see a couple Pirates games, stayed near PNC Park but couldn't find good cold brew nearby in North Shore so we walked across the Roberto Clemente bridge to here. Short, extremely pleasant walk. Ordered inside and was able to sit outside, there was decent sitting inside too. Friendly, fast service. They had free water and cups available inside. The cold brew (black) was great. The breakfast sandwich (bacon, egg, cheddar) was delicious, the sauce on it was perfect, super tasty, and the English muffin was also great. It looks like a small sandwich, but it was really the perfect size, filling without being heavy. A perfect breakfast experience, will definitely come back next time I'm in Pittsburgh!

Strawberry and cream cold brew and oat bar
    Michael B.

Thrilled to get another coffeeshop downtown! De Fer is right on Penn down from 7th Street Bridge. For this order got a cold brew flavored with strawberry creme foam. It was delicious without being overly sweet. The cherry chocolate oat bar was filling and chewy. People there were super nice too. They got other baked goods and pastries there too - go check them out! Looking forward to going back myself.

I got a Nitro Cold brew with vanilla flavoring and almond milk and it was good. They don't have prices on the menu but mine was 6.47 for a 20oz (5.10 for coffee, .95 for flavor shot, and then .42 for Allegheny county tax). Quick service and staff were friendly. They weren't super busy when I went around 8:15 on a Tuesday, started to get busier closer to 8:30 though and by 8:40 the line was back to the door but they still served pretty quickly. They also have grab and go drinks, some iced coffees, breakfast/lunch sandwiches, yogurts, muffins, etc. Inside there's 3 4 person tables and then a wrap around seating/bar area with about 8-10 stools. Also outside seating with three 4-person tables and one 2-person table. Most everyone was taking to go though! But if you want a table for a meeting, suggest to get here before 8:30! Merch and ground coffee available too. Overall, modern coffee shop with options to work or meet for a meeting.

After walking around the neighborhood, this one had seating, so we went inside. First, I'll say the coffee we tried was pretty good - a cappuccino and a brown sugar cinnamon latte. The barista asked "for here or to go" and the drinks still came in a paper cup anyway despite us saying "for here". I really enjoy having a coffee in an actual glass/mug when I say "for here". The ambiance was a bit confusing... not really sure what they were going for in the space, things were a bit choppy and thrown together. Kinda felt like you were in someone's garage with cluttered items on rickety shelves behind the counter. Our barista was very nice, but an awkward moment occurred when they were ringing us up - barista asked for a tip but then told us not to put the tip on the credit card because the owner steals from them. We felt this was a little uncomfortable and gave some unwelcoming energy. We also tried a Nutella croissant, which was very good! I think this shop has a lot of potential with some changes to service and decor.

LOVED our dinner at this place…read more We came here for dinner while visiting Pittsburgh. The first thing that struck me was the interior decor. Very industrial and moody with an open kitchen/preparation area that adds some intrigue. I do like to see the happenings of what's going on as someone with zero attention span. Service was excellent. George was fantastic. He kept a close eye on us without being overbearing. He anticipated what we might need so we didn't spend one second waiting to order anything. The menu is not endless or overwhelming which, presumably, allows them to focus on the items that are listed. I have decision panic so it was kinda nice to have less things to choose from. They asked if there were any allergies or dietary restrictions so I mentioned my vegetarianism. George went through the menu and pointed out the vegetarian options including what seems like it is vegetarian but isn't. They had TWO vegetarian entree options and fortunately the non-mushroom one was something I probably would have ordered anyway: pesto with walnuts, arugula, and a very generous amount of grated cheese. To start, I ordered the Brussels sprouts whichc I was warned had fish sauce. This was fine but nothing that blew me away. GF, on the other hand, loved this. GF ordered the wedge which was brought to our attention as vegetarian with the bacon on the side, which was her request. We ended up sharing both, a large part of that was because hers came out first and I couldn't wait but I'm so glad because the wege was FANTASTIC. The dressing? holy fuck pure ecastasy. The wedge was more like a filet shape which was much easier to eat. Who decided on the wedge shape anyway? The lettuce was so fresh and crisp and went wonderfully with that orgasmic dressing and breadcrumbs. Back to my pasta. Also delectable. Noodles were al dente. The sauce was creamy and packed that pesto umami flavor. The walnuts were a really nice contrast in texture. Everything about it absolutely fucking slapped. GF ordered the mushroom entree which came served on a bed of barley which, don't mind if I do, had a few forkfuls to "sample" for "my review". Again, so fucking good. Because it was my birthday, George provided a dessert (yuzu maybe?) that was served inside a meringue-esque igloo, creamy perfect balance of sweet and tart custard with some berry business underneath. Wonderful. I almost forgot their spectacular cocktails! Holy shit, literally they have a CORN CHIP cocktail that I could not pass up. It comes with two massive cornchips on top of a flavored foam. When you bring the glass up to sip, the cornchips are right in front of your nose and their aroma sets the stage for the drink which was STRONG. It wasn't as corn chip forward as I expected but I understand that flavor is probaly hard to create. For my second drink, I ordered the blue one which was refreshing, light, and really good. GF ordered a spritz which was gorgeous "it was good". For second round, I picked out some uranium thing that was very cucumbery, GF says, "it was good". I just read it outloud to her. "it's true!" Fantastic meal at a great place.
