Let's start with the good - the beer. They make some exceptional sours and wild beers so if you're into the style, or even if you aren't, you should give them a try. They also turn out some seriously funky ones. If the concept of terroir can apply to beer these are steeped in it, and don't forget Tillamook probably has more cows than people. Now the bad, and this is one that any family traveling the Oregon coast this summer should pay attention to. They do not allow kids or dogs anywhere on the property, so if you plan to stop in for a quick taste and a couple bottles for the campfire I hope your family doesn't mind waiting in the car. Oregon in general is a very dog friendly place, de Garde is one of the few exceptions. read more

You come here because the beer is good, and for virtually no other reason. No video games, no pool, no darts, no ballgame on the tube. If you're not very interested in highly specialized beers--or at least very curious to learn more--this isn't quite what you're looking for. But if you do happen to have a liking for sour and funky ales, there are only a couple places within 500 miles that are definitely better, and, hey, you might be more in the mood for De Garde right now. In short: the more of a beer geek you are, the likelier it is that this is one of the best places for you to drink in this state. Maybe make that several states. The particulars: They accept credit cards They allow outside food, including local deliveries The prices are very reasonable; better than most specialty beer bars in cities 6 house taps 4 guest taps Usually 8-10 bottles available to go Usually ~20 bottles available to crack on site only Usually a cider available for the gluten-free among us So, more in depth: It's a warehouse park near the WWII blimp hangars. It's picturesque because there's green everywhere, but you're sitting in a slightly-gussied-up warehouse in the middle of nowhere. Don't come here hoping to be spotted by paparazzi. There's a little parking out back, and a few tables out front. Inside, there are a couple rooms with barrels for tables, and padded stools. They put in some nice vintage-looking light fixtures and clocks, so it feels more like a tasting room than it does a workspace, but it's fairly minimal. There's a bar to the left with friendly kids hopping to it when you order. These guys searched throughout the state of Oregon--literally--to find the best place to make their beers. They spontaneously ferment everything, rather than pitching cultivated yeast in each batch. This can occasionally create unexpected results, and they can't always confirm exactly what fermented each beer. They do this in a koelschip, which allows waiting wort to capture whatever wild yeast floats by, and their chemical tests confirmed Tillamook has the most interesting cultures in Oregon. So, they started their brewery here. They make funky, sour beers: lots of saisons, wild ales, Berliner weisses, and some lambics. They make other stuff, too, but they make lots of variations of these types. They throw in all different kinds of fruits and hops, and age things in oak to calm down some of the bitier edges in some beers. On Saturday they poured beers brewed with truffles, chenin blanc grapes, blueberries, boysenberries, marionberries, Montmorency cherries, and a ton of other things. Most of these were bottle-only and on-premises-only, but this is the kind of place you set aside a whole day (if not more) to visit. A couple tables over, people were trying a ton of stuff after driving 12 hours just to visit this place. Once you get a taste for their beers, that's how you end up feeling about it: Ya gotta have more, even if it means a big effort. I was so grateful for the bottles to go. That let me try 3 more fantastic things back at the hotel later, and bring things back to share with (e.g., deliver to, on request) friends who love their beer. I'm lukewarm on the idea of being here for the big, busy bottle release days and anniversary parties, but I will most definitely come back to sit in the sun and drink their stuff any other weekend I can. read more

So this bar from downtown to their new location next to the Air Museum south of Tillamook. It's small and has a clean rustic feel to it. All the beers are sours so yay/boo for you if that's your thing. If it is, then you will surely adore this little place; each one of us got a different beer and all enjoyed it. If you buy a bottle (a couple beers were offered only in bottles) they must open/pour it for you. Check out the open air barrels/vats on the way to the bathroom lol. Today was a beautiful sunny day in Tillamook to visit one of Oregon's most sought-after breweries. De Garde Brewing has stuck to what they know, and that is wild yeast fermented Farmhouse style beers. They offer extremely limited distribution, but has made a name for itself in a few short years. Located in a business park (because apparently Tillamook has one...) behind the Air Museum, De Garde is quietly brewing some fantastic farmhouse and sour beers. Upon entering, a huge chalk board with the days' offerings are presented. De Garde doesn't have any kind of flagship beer, so whenever you go, the offerings are going to be new as everything is pretty small batch. This is also why they only have a select few bottles available for purchase to-go. There are a few guest taps as well to offer other styles they don't make in-house. The tap room itself isn't terribly large. They have multiple converted mini-fridges to dispense the sweet nectars behind the bar. There are a couple smaller rooms in the back if you'd like to sit down. On warmer days, they also have some outdoor seating available. You can get a 6oz pour of any beer for $3 or a full 12oz pour for $4. That 1 dollar is certainly worth it, however when trying 6 beers, we just got the half glasses of each tap offering. A cool feature of the brewery is that they keep a number of their bottles for on-site consumption only, again helping fuel the scarcity and increase desire for the beers. Above was the list available for the day. I'm looking forward to attending their next special release event at the end of April to get some of these fancy brews. As they are a tap room only, they don't have any food options, just pretzels. When asked what the plans for the brewery were, they said a new location is definitely in the plans, however production is planning to stay at the current level. Maybe the new location will have some food options or more visibility for a food cart or something. Sounds like the owners are fairly busy, so a new location certainly isn't happening any time soon. Visiting de Garde was one of the best choices we made last week (Thursday the 5th)! The staff were extremely attentive, helped with recommendations and added to some great conversation. My friend and I were recommended to try this place by three of our beer-loving friends. At first, we were a little turned off about the distant we'd have to drive to get to here. However, as beer lovers-especially sours, we made the right choice and decided to come here after our hike at Multnomah Falls. Yep, a pretty long trek. I tell ya, the drive wasn't even all that bad. Coming from LA, it was a very picturesque and scenic drive. Venue: As some have mentioned, the place is pretty bare bones. Not a lot of decor, or seating for that matter. However, I understand the lean, minimalist environment. The focus of the brewery is their beer- not the vibe. Ambiance: I'd say the environment is the opposite of what a typical brewery is like. Because this place is far from downtown (kind of in the middle of nowhere), it is very tranquil, very zen- a place to go when you just want to get away from it all. This place attracts a very different type of beer crowd. Beer: Mind and mouth blown! What we ordered: Everything they had on their draft. But these are the ones that really stood out from the crowd. +Purple Raz: On-site consumption only- (my friend's favorite): It's hard to find a real good raspberry sour, and of course the only place you can find it is De Garde! +Biere Peche: On-site consumption only- (my favorite): Loved the fancy peach! Easy to drink and would be a great gateway sour beer for those who want to start getting into sours. +Imperial BU: This was the best sour we tried from their draft- we also bought bottles to bring home :) Honestly though, I don't think this place is for everyone- meaning that you really have to enjoy drinking sour beers to really appreciate what De Garde has to offer. I would encourage anyone who is even a hour to three hours away to take the journey to De Garde. This place literally seems like it is in the middle of no where and surround by hardly anything. There is a reason for this - the owners searched out the best soil for the product they wanted to create and landed in Tillimook. Set next to an air museum that previously held Zeppelins and many Zeppelins at that, makes this place look very small. And small is perfect for its setting. It is a cute little place, with not much room to sit, but the outside is where the beauty lies. Not a single beer on tap was bad, everything was sooo impressive, one after the other. It almost seemed unreal that there wasn't a single beer that I didn't like. What was special about our time spent here is that they allow you to pick a bottle from their list and enjoy it while at the brewery. When I say bottle, I mean one from the cellar and not something you can taste from the tap or take home in a bottle. We took this opportunity to try the Black Razz Bu - it was absolutely gorgeous in color and pleasant to the mouth. I know that's what brought us here. Definitely expect a line when they open. The line goes pretty fast. They know what they're doing. The to-go beers seemed to disappear quickly. Their onsite beer is on point, as expected. The interior is simple and open. It's just what it needs to be. We enjoyed our beers on the outside patio. We loved every part of our visit! read more

They serve unique beers you won't find virtually anywhere else in the US. European influences shine through. Sour beers are an option, but so are sweet beers, yeasty beers, and others. Be friendly and ask the staff for a recommendation, based on your taste, and they'll likely pleasantly surprise you. DON'T expect them to serve Budweiser... and you most likely won't like it if that's the style of beer you're expecting. Update 8/30/2018: I was contacted by a rep from from De Garde. Offered to refund me for the incorrect bottle. Very nice and apologetic. This review isn't about their beer it's about their employees not putting the correct bottles ordered in bags and boxes. Their beer is great. Their sours are among my favorites. I will have no complaints there. I came in, mind you after driving from 700 miles away, ordered multiple rounds of Purple and then decided to pick up a few bottles to bring home. I ordered the Purple and Vanilla Kriek. Paid. Then received my bag full of ales and drove on out. When I got back my friends house I was staying at I opened the bag. There was the purple and plain ol Kriek. Damn. The vanilla was going to be for the girlfriend. No worries I'll drive out in the morning and switch it. NOPE. All sold out. De Garde. I like you. Even the annoyance of only selling 95% of all bottles through your tap room. Just make sure your employees give the customer the correct items they paid for. read more

This place makes extraordinary, interesting, one-of-a-kind beers. If you are a beer connoisseur you will find plenty to taste. The trouble is, it has gotten way too expensive. Good-beer prices in general have skyrocketed in recent years, as I'm sure you have noticed. But this place takes it to a whole 'nother level. Many of the beers are bottled, but not to go -- they are bottled for in-house consumption only. As a brewer friend commented, "Why don't they just put on more taps?" So: there is a list of maybe six house beers and another six guest beers on tap. Then there is a list of maybe four beers in bottles to go. And the big list of maybe 30 beers in bottles for in-house consumption only! So when you visit you see bottles all over the tables. And the bottles for in-house consumption start at $22 and go up into the $60 range. The draft beer is more reasonably priced. But you are bound to be tempted by that long list of bottles. Plus you've probably traveled a long way to get here. Enjoyable as many of the beers here are (and there are some clunkers, choose carefully), I think it's not really worth the cost. read more

Sour beer nerd heaven. I almost don't want to say anymore because if that sentence describes something you want to experience, De Garde is worth the trek. My husband and I rented and excellent sports car and drove in from Portland. The drive was half of what made this experience as it is beautiful and sets the tone for an afternoon of beer. If you love sours, weird beers, or long drives this place is for you. This place is kinda in the middle of no where and a good drive out from Portland, but if you make the day of it and go hiking this is a great post hike drink. Don't expect a fancy taproom, this place is all about the beer. So I was expecting crazy expensive beers, since the bottles are close to $30 in DC, but no decent beer and bottle prices. I even bought 4 to bring back, but broken one in transit. The flavors are unique and intense. They focus on sours and I was in love. Ah, here is another "catch up" place that I should have reviewed earlier on and have just gotten around to doing now. Tillamook has some cool stuff, a couple cheese factories, beaches, a nearby lighthouse and that huge air museum that is demands your attention as soon as you get into town. While on a visit to the Tillamook Cheese Factory I was wondering if the town had any breweries and low and behold there is one, De Garde Brewing! Here at this brewery I had their Farmhouse Ale, the Petit DeSay which was a lovely, tart beer. Just what I was wanting! We tasted some of their other beers which a few were sours which was very cool! The reason why I think it was so cool is that out in the Pacific Northwest IPA's seem to be everywhere so it was nice getting something a bit more unusual. However in the few years since I moved to the Pacific Coast beers seem to be becoming more diverse which I also welcome in seeing this change! read more

This place is amazing. Definitely in my top 5 favorite breweries. Every single beer I tried--I loved--which is rare, sometimes when I go beer tasting I don't always like all of them, and sometimes just like one choice. But, I can't wait to go back to Tillamook so I can go to DeGarde again. (It's near the Cheese Factory, so that makes a fun day out of it) We went to Whole Foods a few nights ago, and I realized that a few of De Garde beers are on tap, so that is super nice that you can still get their beers even if you are not at the coast. When you go here, definitely get a tasting flight and then get a beer to enjoy the environment in, after the flight. It's a cool ambience to hang out and relax. The brewers at DeGarde really have brewing figured out, it is the good amount of fruit balance, the right amount of tartness and the perfect amount of alcohol. It doesn't leave your taste buds --killed from too much sourness, it is just the right amount of balance. I can't wait to go back to this brewery! read more

De Garde reminds me of Portland's version of Hill Farmstead. Or Jester King, if it was even further into the country. It's one of those magical breweries where the trip out to visit it is part of the experience and journey in understanding the life and style of the beers that flow out of it. You pass by fields of corn, open farmland, and slow moving rivers, as you negotiate turns that bring you closer and closer to a gigantic blimp hangar that is reminiscent of a James Bond villain lair. And then you arrive upon an unassuming building with a small portion housing one of the best breweries in the country. This is De Garde Brewing. After parking and walking through the small patio roped off by barrels, the first thing I did was immediately compliment the staff their on the location and scenery that surround the brewery. The place is quiet and stunning. They had 6 goses, wilds, or farmhouses pouring by the 6 oz or 12 oz tasting while I was there, along with a couple guest taps. If you're coming here looking for west coast IPAs, you're going to leave disappointed. Or maybe not. Regardless, this brewery is a celebration of the natural tastes of fruit, wood, yeast, salt, and the fresh air that surround the brewery. The wild ales poured here tell a story that you can trace with every note you breathe in or taste. De Garde's beers show you the side of Oregon that is untouched by urban bustle or decay. Rather, its beers paint the mural of the natural beauty that you saw as you drove past downtown Tillamook to this unassuming place. Stay for as long as you can. Buy as many bottles to go as you can. De Garde is a very special place in this universe, and I count myself lucky enough to have gone there. If you're looking for a good sour beer this is definitely worth a visit. The tasting room is located outside Tillamook. It's a great place to enjoy a beer, stretch your legs and relax before continuing along the coast. On the "menu" you'll find beers such as the Saison, a Wild Farmhouse Ale, a Bu variation, which is a Berliner Weisse Style Ale, and the Hose, a Gose Style Ale. They don't serve food, and children and PETs are not allowed. But they're always ready to pour you a nice, cool beer, in a beautiful setting. read more

Don't let the looks of this place fool you. It's very bare bones and almost a sterilized character or vibe to it. It feels like you're at a spot in a strip mall, but boy oh boy, their beers are amazing. De Garde brews sours, farmhouse style ales, wilde ales, saisons, etc. You won't find a double IPA or basic stout here unelss it's on one of the guest taps. Most of their beers are brewed with fruits, oak aged, and they use those wild yeast cultures to give a unique twang to their beers. They have around 8-10 beers on tap of their own stuff, a handful of guest taps, and a bottle list for on site consumption only, as well as bottles to go. Make sure, if you're able, that you take some bottles to go. You'll regret it if you don't. After spending a couple hours of here you can understand why this brewery is gaining a huge following. read more

Amazing sour beer, some of the best sour/tart beer I've ever had and they do it very well. I love the layout, the look, the service of this place. The location is odd but I cannot fault them for that. The only reason I rated 4 stars instead of a full five, is the lack of air conditioning. I fully understand the cost would not have a monetary gain for the business, but comfort for customers that drive a hundred miles in and want to enjoy a beer on site. It's a little hard in 85+ draftees with all the windows open. All that said, I will be back and just plan it on a cooler day. A recommendation I would make, is to have menus, of places that are near and deliver available, so that people can eat and drink at the same time. read more

Rude. Visiting from Fort Collins where we have a brewery every 10 feet and not used to the snobby 'bearded beer club' mentality this brewery and their workers have. I don't care how good the beer is, if the customer service isn't there, it ruins the taste.
