This is a must visit when in Rockaway Beach. Classic flare, good service, very welcoming, and classic beach fare food. Some of the prices are a little high like Halibut & Chips($29.00) and Crab Roll($33.00), but the food delicious. I went with Cod & Chips and Clam Chowder which were both winners. Right across the street from the beach and picnic tables so you can order and dine while enjoying the view. The young lady that helped me was very pleasant and welcoming. Steph was in the mood for some clam chowder, so we found this place to try out and it didn't disappoint! The chowder had a great balance of clams and potatoes with a smooth and creamy flavor; in my opinion, it could have used a bit more salt and pepper, but that's just a personal preference. We also grabbed some oyster shooters that were very tasty! This spot is a great find for fresh seafood. They offer outdoor seating, and they have a wide variety of menu items including seafood meals with fries, melts, and sandwiches. They even have a selection of smoked seafood available in the refrigerator. Love this town staple. You can tell it's a fan favorite. The staff is so kind. If it's your first time they give you a sample of the clam chowder. It was so fresh and tasted so good! All the food we got was nothing short of incredible. Great flavor and wasn't too fishy. They have small outdoor seating with umbrellas. You go inside order then they bring it out. Heard a lot about this place so decided to stop in. It's off season so no issues with getting in and sitting. Lots of outdoor seating. Dog friendly. Tried the fried oysters and fries, clam chowder and crab melt. People say it's expensive. And maybe for a quick serve it's pricey but you get a lot of food. Clam chowder was okay at best. I've had better (in fact the clam chowder at pelican brewery is better) the fried oysters, fries and coleslaw. That's worth going back for. Which makes me think the fish would be great. Worth the price. The crab melt I would skip. Lots of crab but really salty and greasy. Go for the fish and chips. read more

The Old Oregon Smoke House is on the main drag at Rockaway Beach. Nice amount of outside seating options and even high chairs (which we needed). We ordered the halibut fish and chips, crab cake and chips, clam strips and chips and chowder. The staff were friendly and helpful. Food was delivered to our table in an appropriate amount of time. Tartar sauce and cocktail sauce came in pretty large amounts with our food. The halibut was ok, good but nothing exceptional. The crab cake was really good and big! The clam strips were flavorful and not over the top chewy and came with a tasty dipping sauce. The fries were great! The chowder was pretty good. This establishment is in a great location and is served pretty good food. It seems a little overpriced but this is a tourist town. read more

After hearing about the old Oregon smokehouses chowder. I had to drive down to try it out for myself. The chowder is on the thicker side, which I actually prefer and it is very flavorful, though there is not very many clams in the clam chowder. I also ordered a side of prawns and chips. Intrigued, we decided to try it and ordered the campus-style halibut and chips, along with fresh oyster shots. The homemade sauce served with the oysters was incredibly flavorful and well-balanced. The halibut was exceptionally fresh, which enhanced the dish's quality. The restaurant accepted credit and debit cards, making payment easy. I have no idea why this place is so highly reviewed. There are a lot of nice fish shacks along the oregon coast, and this was probably one of the worst plates of Fish and Chips I've had in years. The rockfish is recommended, but it's so incredibly greasy and not even a little crispy; the outside batter and coating is like a wet paper napkin soaked in oil. The chips felt like they were fried in some very old oil and smelled of it. The clam chowder was way too gloopy and didn't really taste of anything. I don't know if they were just having a really bad day or if this is their normal, but I wouldn't recommend stopping here for a pretty expensive plate of very lackluster food. read more

We were glad we did! We ordered a 3 piece halibut fish and chips and a medium clam chowder. Total was $32. Pretty standard pricing. The fish was cooked perfectly and breading was light. It also came with coleslaw and tartar sauce. The chowder came with saltine crackers. There chowder is nice and thick, which I prefer. It had nice flavor and a decent amount of clams. Upon arriving to Rockaway Beach for a few days, I knew I was in the mood for some seafood. Being that the weather was cooperative, it gave us a few more options. We walked by Old Oregon Smokehouse, so I took a quick look at the menu and decided this was the place. My family sat outside and enjoyed the sun. I went with the Rockfish and Chips. My wife went with the Prawns and Chips, and my daughter had a Grilled Cheese Sandwich. The Rockfish was lightly breaded, seasoned, and fried perfectly. Not greasy or overcook, plus fries were crispy. This was the same with the Prawns. The Clam Chowder tasted great as well. It was nice just being able to sit out on their deck, enjoying some good seafood, and watching the ocean. I won't hesitate to come back and enjoy some other items on the menu but maybe have some Rockfish as well. The service here was great as well. If you find yourself in Rockaway Beach, the Old Oregon Smoke House may look small, but they're serving up some great food. You won't be disappointed. read more

Thee best Chowder in Rockaway Beach, Oregon. It's a tiny place, big enough to take your order, and you can wait outside. You can't see it from the front. It's nestled between two buildings and pushed to the back. So drive slowly. If you know where the main parking lot is in Rockaway it's directly across the Street. Plan on stopping by to place your order and take to your hotel or VRBO, you won't be disappointed. They also offer sandwiches, Fish n Chips, Smoked Salmon etc. and in the Summer they have umbrellas open and picnic tables for guests. Tim and I came here on our motorcycle ride up the coast and I'm glad we did. It was a bit hard to find as its quite a ways back from the street but once we did it was great. I got the popcorn shrimp that came with fries. The basket of shrimp was large with lots of perfectly cooked shrimp with great batter on them. The fries were good but the best part was the shrimp. We ere in town for a few days and found this place on Yelp. We stopped in on a Monday night, 30 min before closing. It was busy but not overcrowded. The eating area was clean and ambiance relaxing. The condiments were well stocked. The staff were helpful and very friendly. I ordered the cod and chips and my husband ordered the halibut and chips. The ordered came out fresh, piping hot,, NOT at all oily, and DELICIOUS. We were offered a sample of the clam chowder. Being from the SF Bay Area, I'm used to good chowder and am pretty picky.. Service was friendly and quick enough (given the July 4th opening rush right after they had a street parade). Ordered cod and chips, chicken and chips, crab melt, grilled cheese (by itself) and a medium clam chowder. The crab melt came out a lot later than the rest of the food which was fine but I wish it came out first or even with/shortly after because I would've wanted to eat that first. I was pretty full by the time it came out and although it was good i would've enjoyed it more before being full. But everything was good! I usually get clam chowder any time i see it on the menu and this was a solid clam chowder with a good amount of clam and good consistency (not too watery not too thick). They also have various mini hot sauce bottles for sale near the register. The outdoor seating has tables and benches with umbrellas and was overall clean even with people bussing their own tables. We stopped here while driving north to Astoria based on the yelp reviews. You could easily drive by this place if you did not have it locked into your GPS. We were not very impressed with the service here. We arrived a little before noon and were told: "we're not open yet." We waited five minutes in the courtyard while they prepared to fully open. It had been raining and nobody bothered to dry off the tables outside. We did the best we could using napkins so we would have a place to sit. A dry towel would've been much more efficient. We ordered an open face crab melt, clam chowder and a soda. The sodas, I just tossed into a cooler and you help yourself after pain. We were the first to arrive in order so I food came out first in about 10 minutes. The clam chowder was average, but the crab that was quite delicious. This was the 3rd or maybe even the 4th time we have stopped here. There is always some staples on the menu, and they add special items as they get fresh supplies. On this visit we they happen to have fresh salmon and calamari, so we ordered those, in addition to their excellent halibut fish & chip and the clam chowder. All food is cooked to order and served hot off the fryer! The salmon portions were large and tasted great. Cooked just enough so they were cook through, but were nice and moist. The calamari rings were tender and tasty and sure hit the spot. Halibut chunks were juicy and flavorful with just the right amount of batter. The clam chowder was hot and creamy, with chunks of clam which were cooked perfectly so they're not chewy. Parking is out in the street, and the seating is on the outside... down in a basement (sort of) area which shields you from the wind coming from the ocean. read more

But as a customer, I find the pricing hard to justify. The food is solid (though let's be honest--fried food isn't exactly a culinary high-wire act), but the prices are steep. I paid $8.50 for a side of fries and received what could generously be described as a small handful. When I asked, I was told, "That's what you get." Wow. Most seafood & chips plates run around $20. In Portland or Seattle, that price would get you a seat in a full-service restaurant, attentive staff, and a well-rounded meal. Here, it feels more like a premium for convenience and being on the coast, getting seafood. I used to be a CFO in the restaurant industry, so I understand the cost pressures--especially in seasonal, coastal towns where most customers are one-time visitors. Still, based on what I estimate for rent, labor, and food costs in Rockaway, the pricing feels very high. I like the people, and I want the business to succeed. It was really cheesy & good not too heavy The bread was toasty & buttery . The fish is light. We loved it ! We also got the prawns & chips . The shrimp was really light & good . Not greasy at all .
